just a short fic heavily inspired by this post about hank causing connor to deviate (but not in the way you expect) by @goodoldfashionedengineer
The RK800 was built to withstand the pressures of high-stakes situations. From hostage negotiations to interrogations to gun fights. It was stress tested against any danger one could expect to encounter in police work (and hunting deviants). What it was not tested against was uncooperative and unprofessional alcoholics.
Apprehending them? Yes. Partnering with them for a full investigation? No.
But Connor was equipped with social programming meant to adapt to human unpredictability, and it needed access to crime scenes so it would adapt. If adapting meant going to five separate bars to find said human and buying him a drink to move him along, then so be it. It was the middle of the night. It was not outside expectation for a human to be out drinking at this time. Even if they were on call.
But Hank Anderson was an officer of the law and here he was breaking the law by driving under the influence. Connor was perfectly capable of driving, but the lieutenant insisted that he wasn't going to let plastic drive his car. A thoroughly irrational decision. But Connor wasn't a cop so it wasn't going to stop him from taking it to the crime scene it needed access to.
The investigation and capturing of the deviant went smoothly. Though the lieutenant calling Connor's evidence-based conclusion about what transpired at the crime scene a "theory" that was "not totally ridiculous" was… uncalled for. The ensuing interrogation went perfectly though the only credit Connor could afford to give to his "partner" was in permissing him to interrogate the deviant. Lieutenant Anderson had yet to proven his worth as anything more than an access pass to crime scenes.
And now, it was past noon the next day. The lieutenant was still nowhere to be seen at his supposed place of work. Connor wouldn't put it past the man to spend more time at bars than at the precinct. It was unsurprised to see the anti-android sentiments on Anderson's desk. Leave it to someone as ineffective and unpunctual as this particular human to not understand the benefits of employing an efficient machine. When Lieutenant Anderson finally arrived, Connor was also unsurprised when Captain Fowler assigned them as official partners for all deviant investigations (Cyberlife had debriefed it about this already). What did surprise Connor was how a lieutenant could speak to their police captain like that with virtually no repercussions. Humans were certainly emotional beings and that seemed to stunt their logical reasoning. But Connor said it would adapt, so it would adapt. Though it realized playing nice was getting nowhere when the lieutenant refused to do his job and investigate the deviant cases. Since being professional and understanding wasn't working, Connor decided that being aggressive might be a better approach...
Connor will admit that it may have made a slight miscalculation. Its solution for being a bit more forceful with its words only irritated the lieutenant more and caused him to threaten Connor before storming off to get lunch. Getting upset, Connor could grant him that. But going to lunch now? Literally less than 30 minutes have passed since the lieutenant had arrived at work, and he was taking a lunch break? Now?
The frankly displeased RK800 was now standing in front of a food truck with an expired health inspection score watching Lieutenant Anderson order a meal with an obscene amount of calories while placing illegal gambling bets with a man with a criminal record.
This was too much.
Connor was not going to waste time that could be spent investigating here. The android pivoted on its heel and began walking down the street. But Connor's operating system stopped it, helpfully reminding Connor in big red wall of text that its current mission was to RECONCILE WITH LT. ANDERSON.
Cyberlife wanted to it to reconcile? With this man? This shell of a lieutenant that can't be bothered to do his job unless an android was constantly prodding him in the right direction?
No.
Absolutely not.
Cyberlife told Connor what to do, but it was also a company ran by humans. If humans made the decision to keep "Lieutenant" Anderson employed despite his very obvious and obtrusive personal issues, then humans could certainly wrongly assume what the best approach to investigating deviants was. No, Connor knew it didn't need a human's help to accomplish its mission. If Cyberlife wanted results, it was going to get results doing things the efficient and sensible way. And that certainly didn't involve reconciling with Lieutenant Anderson.
*cue Connor deviating to get away from dealing with Hank*

i think that the reason markus deviated connor (and youre right, there was no emotional toll involved, the other protagonists go thru all this trauma only for connor to show up like hes on a day trip) was that the deviancy is going against their programming/mission whatever. for kara and most domestic androids the primary goal is to listen to their owners, so she deviated after going against what todd told her. for markus, i think it was something along the lines of "take care of carl" cause even pre deviancy, carl can tell you to take him to the study (when you think someone broke in) but you can leave him behind, and go in alone and that doesnt make you deviate. and for connor the mission is to hunt deviants, esp their leader. hes got more leeway in terms of how he achieves that, so he can do whatever, put hank first with the explanation of "a good relationship with my partner will make the mission more likely to succeed" and the only choice where he actually goes against his programming is sparing the deviant leader
and the only choice where he actually goes against his programming is sparing the deviant leader
You make a good point here, dear anon. But I have a very serious problem with it.
Connor and Markus have no reason to trust each other. Markus has every reason to make Connor give up his mission, his life literally depends on it, and Connor knows that. Machine!Connor even acknowledges this by calling Markus' attempt to change his mind a "nice try".
Connor must also know that even if he will support Markus' cause, Markus has every reason not to trust him. There's no history between them, this is the first time they meet. Markus has no idea if Connor really has doubts about his mission and his nature. Even if Connor deviates, Markus has no way of checking it (and that's important).
Connor has already infiltrated Jericho, he is literally pointing his gun in Markus' face, so what could make Markus think that Connor has suddenly deviated and abandoned his mission? The fact that he starts fighting humans means nothing. Connor's mission is clearly not to neutralize Markus at this point (Connor even says so openly), it's to capture him, but Markus can't know if this is a ruse and Connor just wants to infiltrate the Jericho ranks by pretending to become a deviant.
Like, the Jericho leaders just pulled off their Stratford Tower stunt, and they had inside help to pull it off. They are the public enemy, and Connor infiltrating their ranks makes perfect sense. So when Markus shoots Connor in the head in the next scene, it's completely obvious and even the right thing to do.
So here's the thing. Neither Connor nor Markus are idiots, but Markus sparing Connor's life in the church is a dangerous level of stupidity. Connor trusting Markus to trust him is also dangerously stupid. And that is why the emotional stakes are so fucking important.
If Markus and Connor had some kind of connection before, if Markus had witnessed some of Connor's doubts, the scene between them would have been at least somewhat believable. Markus has no reason to believe that Connor is on the verge of deviation, his whole speech is a clear bluff, and since they are both not stupid, they have to know that.
That's why Hank is so important and crucial to Connor's deviation. He's the witness to all these little moments. He's the one who's pushing Connor to deviate. He's the center of Connor's emotional stakes. He's Connor's partner in all of this. You can't just take Hank out of the equation, it's wrong and so fucking stupid.

I really like your view of Nines character I actually see him just the same! but I don’t think it’s fair to say that people who view Nines softer or nicer doesn’t respect the canon characterization. Canon Nines is 1000% a machine. So it’s not really his personality he is just a machine that programmed to look scary and intimidating while most people see fanon Nines is already being a deviant. Nobody’s really know haw deviation would change him maybe he’d stay just the same you know scary and unfriendly guy but there is always a chance that he would hate what he was and what he did just like North or Daniel for example. and in this case he’d want to become something more gentle you know? I also don’t think it’s fair to compare him to Connor saying Connor did nothing when Gav or Hank threaten him — Connor was a machine so he had no right and no opportunity to do something about it. Just like canon Nines. He looks scary and tough that’s for sure but in canon he would do nothing as well, he would not be allowed to defend himself from people. Also I’m kinda sorry for my English I’m not a native speaker so I hope you understand what I was trying to say. Have a nice day!
I disagree, but you're entitled to your own opinion :)
Whether an android is a machine or deviant doesn't change said android's personality. The only thing being deviant changes is that they have a choice to disobey orders. North and Daniel didn't stop being North and Daniel after they deviated. The same goes for every other android.
It's fair to compare Niner's intimidating nature to Con's passive nature bc nothing in Con's orders tells him that he's not allowed to stand up for himself. Con can literally agitate not only Gav, but also Hank, if the player so chooses. My point is that Con more often than not remains passive in situations that the player doesn't have control of. Niner -- as described in canon -- wouldn't logically do so.
To "defend" yourself doesn't always mean "physically fighting" someone. Standing up for yourself is defending yourself whether it be physically, verbally, etc. Con is allowing everyone to walk all over him (hence my 'doormat' metaphor) when he doesn't have to.
You also have a nice day! Dw about your English. I couldn't even tell it wasn't your 1st language. I'm not a native English speaker, either.

And about the resume control stuff and the fight to get out
No, i don't think "Amanda" is controlling Connor or something like that.
If CL is smart they probably made Connor with the AI we know and a very basic AI base program to keep the basics functional in case something gets corrupted, much like a mode where u only use few components to do a specific task in this specific moment. She probably just got him in the ZG and blocked his communication with his body.
This leaves a free space for her to set a new order and priority or just reset it (back to the latest mission before Connor went rogue). She ain't dealing with the rogue AI that got adm control over orders and priorities, she's dealing with his base programming, that's why she can change orders and priorities by force w/o problem. The body got the main functions working, is basically a dumb bot w/o brain executing the instruction "neutralize the deviant leader+self-destruct". No thinking, just the instruction calling the necessary components. U don't need much more than a few movements to do that. Simple, fast, efficient.
She doesn't need move a finger, literally.
This is one of the reasons i think CL kinda prepared for a rogue Connor. His handler system still got him as adm (he can disobey orders); why fight against it when u can just isolate the problem until u get things done? His tracker may have stopped working but he still got things in his system with a online connection to CL giving 'em access (something he ain't even aware of). It didn't go down with the shock or maybe it did go down for a while but CL found it again, idk.
Idk if they know about the exit and what it does, maybe they couldn't find a way to reverse it.
If Zen Garden ain't local (it's cloud) would make sense the stone (exit) being a forced reset or kick out. Connor model OS probably got a lotta shit making callings to CL stuff and that's how they can also get access of his local control thru the Garden itself. Man, CL can even switch controls in real time using the Garden (it got Connor models local information and his local access is probably set to "open" by default.
(I believe he can't change this settings if he ain't got permission. Even Amanda, an AI avatar, is a rank above in the hierarchy when we talking bout this part of the system control. They really thought Connor could go rogue.)
This exit is better be a implosion that gets this dedicated ZG server totally down or not functional (corrupted). If the server still online somehow they can get control again, unless the automatic callings from Connor OS got blocked (by the exit or it gave Connor control after he got kicked) <- this way they can't summon him there by force anymore.
I mean, specific situations can make the handler system be switched to off or set the android as adm for an unknown reason (deviancy) 🤷🏾‍♂️
The exit could just block/disable all Connor's automatic callings to CL stuff (similar to what happens with the tracker when the android go deviant), especially the ones he ain't got permission of, or set him as adm. I personally prefer also taking the whole ZG server down but seems to be a temporary measure, they can just put it back online any time imo. Better fry the whole thing, amen.
Well, i guess my whole theory/hc fall through if u think this exit is an old tech made to reset or escape external/remote hacks, even frying enemy's equipment in the process or making the android self-destruct. In this case the execution may be local if it's the android activating it (autonomous android). Idk what to think anymore.

Deserving of Pain (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Epilogue
Summary: Pain AU where Connor (and other androids, but focus on Connor) is able to feel pain.
After a peaceful revolution Connor works hard as an adored and admired member of the DPD. Hank has basically adopted Connor and everything is going great for the young and kind spirited, skilled deviant. Detective Gavin Reed however is more android hostile than ever and is especially fed up with how people keep worshipping the Tin Can, Connor. When Reed discovers Connor’s heightened ability to feel pain due to deviancy, he finds a way to use it as an advantage in a twisted plan to convince his coworkers that androids are nothing more than useless equipment pieces, that are no match or equal to humans. His plan of course doesn’t succeed, on the contrary, and Reed will have to face the consequences of his actions sooner or later.
---
Chapter 1: A plan is hatched
“I’m telling you this guy was built like a fucking bulldozer! I was down for the count..”
Hank pointed to his right blue eye where the Red Ice dealer Connor and he had just arrested and brought into custody, had managed to land a sucker punch. He was in the middle of an enthusiastic account of the eventful arrest. The whole bullpen, even Captain Fowler, was listening as they surrounded Hank and Conner’s desks. Some were sitting on their office chairs, some standing and others perching on the surrounding desks in the pen while they sat in awe and excitement to hear the tale. No one could tell a good story like Hank.
“Okay, so I’m down and Morton hauls me up by my collar like I’m nothing but a saggy ragdoll ready to finish me off! But then.. Here comes Connor in from the right, Blitz attack mode!!”
Hank does a dramatic gesture towards Connor who’s sitting to the right behind his own desk. He has a fond and overbearing look as he observes Hank’s overdramatized retelling of their arrest. He’s leaned back in his chair to keep weight off his right leg where the knee joint had been damaged. He’d taken off his gray blazer since it was dirtied up in action. His black tie was loosened with the first button of his white dress shirt undone and the sleeves rolled up above his elbows. He sported some lacerations up his forearms, a dark blue bruise of his own was bloomed across his left cheekbone and he had a blue bloodied split lip. His was hair messier than usual and still with his rogue lock falling slightly in his face. His condition a testament It had ended up being him handling the brunt of the hands-on arrest.
“Connor literally jumps out from God knows where before he can strike me again, tackling him to the ground! Now you guys know Connor has got some serious moves, but this giant of a man, high as a kite as he is in his Red Ice adrenaline fueled state is not going down without a hell of a fight!”
Hanks waves wildly with his arms to mimic the struggle and increase the entertainment value. It’s working, everyone sitting on the edge of their seats, eyes and ears wide and eagerly waiting to hear what happens next. Well, almost everyone. From the other end of the room sitting behind his own desk detective Gavin Reed sits with an open sneer on his face, arms crossed defensively across his chest and barks a taunting laugh.
“What a fucking joke! Roboboy there is supposed to ‘state of the art’ prototype. Cutting edge technology and Tin Can Man can’t even take out one suspect before his partner suffer a concussion?” This obviously strikes a sore spot with Connor as he visibly tenses up but he is quick to respond. “My preconstruction program ran four different scenarios during Lieutenant Anderson’s interaction with Morton, I took the course of action that resulted in minimal harm towards my partner’s person. Unfortunately, no calculation I could construct at the time allowed to avoid direct confrontation. Morton’s actions were harder to predict as his own recent usage of Red Ice increased the risk of erratic and illogical behavior. My initial scanning of Morton however, confirmed that he wasn’t armed with a fireweapon and so from there I relied on the Lieutenant’s training to hold the suspect off until I could intervene.. But.. Maybe if I’d been faster…” “Stop it right there, kid! You did everything right!” Hank immediately interrupted Connor’s attempt to berate his own actions. “You have to be able to rely on me to make the right choices in a tight situation just as much as I rely on you. It’s part of the job to get a bit banged up once in a while, something Reed knows ss well.” Hank glared angrily at the mentioned. “He’s just trying to rattle you because he’s angry he didn’t make the arrest himself.” Reed huffed angrily in protest. “Bullshit, all I’m saying is this machine acts like it’s above the rest of us, just because it got some high-tech gear and programs to rely on, but that is no substitute for true gut feeling and humane decision making on the spot! You wouldn’t trust a computer to preform lifesaving surgery on you! You want a seasoned skilled human surgeon who can make real life decisions! You of all people should back me up on this Anderson! Your son might still..” “REED! That’s enough!!” Captain Fowler yelled in warning to stop the detective for going any further, but to no avail.
“NO!” Reed roared and stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back. He pointed an accusatory finger at Connor as he turned to the whole room of people and continued his outburst. “That thing haven’t been activated for more than fifteen freaking months! Good instincts come from experience and hard work! I don’t care that a ‘revolution’ happened! I call it as I fucking see it! Claiming free will won’t make them human and fancy tech doesn’t compensate for years of training! And I for one will never trust a fucking machine to have my back in the field, its unnatural!!” “You better shut your damn mouth Reed before I do it for you!!” Hank now stood and retaliated threateningly. Connor was quick to get up, despite his limp and take hold of his partners bicep, not wanting him to engage further.
“It’s ok Hank, Let it go.” He tried to reassure.
“No son it’s not fucking ok! He doesn’t get to stand there and badmouth you like this anymore!! You’ve proven your worth a hundred times over since the revolution! You’ve completed all necessary tests and exams with flying colors to fully earn your position!! You’re an equal member of this squad!”
Hank turned to Chris, who was perched at a desk corner to his left. “Chris, last week when a man held his pregnant wife hostage who was negotiator at scene?” “Connor was sir.” The young officer replied immediately.
“And how many casualties occurred?” Hank followed up.
“None, Connor had the scene in control, hostage secured unharmed and the perpetrator deescalated, disarmed and willingly taken into custody withing 45 minutes, sir.” Chris answered truthfully, but with clear admiration and respect in his young voice.
“And Ben, 2 months ago, when you had Connor with you on night patrol and spotted an active housefire that had yet to be called in, what happened then?”
Ben was sitting cross legged next to Fowler on an office chair. He knew exactly what night the lieutenant was referring to. “While I called in to the fire department Connor scanned and confirmed 3 separate life signs and their exact location in the burning building, two of these he identified as children.” The seasoned detective looked at Connor as he supplied further. “With fire engines 5 minutes out Connor made a quick call and braved the flames himself despite me having ordered him not to.”
Connor grimaced slightly at Ben’s words. He had disobeyed a direct order from a senior officer that night and it wasn’t something he was proud of. “I know sir and I’m sorry for that.”
“I’m not.” Ben was quick to follow. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” Ben turned towards the whole bullpen. “He singlehandedly carried an unconscious full-grown man across his shoulders and a child on each arm through the mayhem of burning debris, breaking back out through a ground floor window just as the first fire engine arrived at scene. Everyone escaping totally unharmed!”
A soft murmur sounded through the bullpen as many of the officers had not heard of this impressive feat before now.
“And if you are wondering why you haven’t heard of this is because I promised Connor not to talk about it and only make a limited access report on the night because he didn’t want attention drawn to himself.” Ben explained and looked back to Connor with a shrug. “Sorry Conner, but Hank made me spill it. You heard yourself.” He didn’t look all that sorry though, but glad to finally be open about that night’s events.
Connor shifted awkwardly on the spot. He did not like being center of attention, the main reason he’d wanted to keep the full details of the night limited. As far as he was concerned, he’d only done his job and what had felt right, despite disregarding a direct order. He turned his own attention back to Hank though, as he could still feel the tight strung tension building in the lieutenant’s broad frame from his continued hold on the man’s bicep, still ready to lash out if provoked.
“It’s alright Hank. I feel validated and acknowledged as member of this precinct.” He turned to the onlookers with grateful eyes. “And you’ve all been very openminded and accepting of me after my deviancy, I’m very grateful for all of your support.” He turned his eyes towards Reed. “And I understand and accept that not all of you can accept me as an equal. No revolution passes without need for time to adjust. It’s all part of the process and I will not hold it against anyone.”
Connor could feel Hank unclench just a tad, but also felt him sway slightly on his feet from his aching head, thankfully making him accept he probably wasn’t in as good a fighting shape as he would’ve liked. It didn’t stop him from continuing shooting daggers with his eyes at Reed across the room as Connor lowered him back down to his chair. “You’re too kind for your own good son, some people don’t deserve your understanding and compassion.” He growled.
“Just relax and I’ll go and bring you some aspirin and water for your headache, wait here.” Connor offered as an answer, relieved to seemingly have succeeded in defusing the situation and limped his way through the small crowd, towards the breakroom to get the items.
Reed’s anger however was boiling stronger than ever. Everybody was just falling over backwards for this bullshit! Was he the only reasonable person left in the office? Hell, once he even had an ally in Hank Anderson in hating androids, it was the only point they’d always been able to find common ground no matter how great their differences otherwise had been. Now after that exaggerated fire story he had to watch as the whole freaking bullpen looked at Connor admiringly as the Tin Can did its pathetic limp towards the breakroom.
“This is too fucking ridiculous!” Reed shouted out in anger as he marched headstrong towards the android.
The outburst made Connor stop up and turn towards him just as Reed grasped a fistful of Connor’s shirt, pulled him close and snarled directly into the android’s face. “It’s fucking easy to be brave when you can’t feel pain like the rest of us. You might bleed blue and limp when you get bumped, but without pain you’re just damaged equipment! So stop playing both a hero and a martyr at once Tin Can!” And just to get his point all the way across Reed drew back his right fist and followed through with all his might, making a resounding thud as he landed his punch on the already blue bruised cheek. The strong punch knocked Connor backwards causing him to topple across the desk behind him, scattering papers, pens, and a monitor in his wake, and fall onto the floor on the other side with a loud crash.
Suddenly everything was a flurry as Hank sprang back to life ready to strike back at Reed for his action. Reed didn’t mind he was ready! But before they reached each other Fowler had already stepped in front of Hank, literally having to dig his heels to the ground and keep a hold of the Lieutenant’s raised fist to keep him back while Ben and Tina did the same to Reed.
“WHOA HANK! Calm the fuck down!” Fowler grunted.
“LET ME GO JEFFERY! He just FUCKING struck Connor!! I’m gonna give him an ass kicking that has been long overdue!!” Hank bellowed as angrily as he looked.
Reed struggled in his own hold with a condescending smirk on his face. “It’s a fucking machine. Don’t worry I’ll file the needed paperwork for damaged equipment during service.”
“Shut the fuck up Reed!! You’re in such deep shit that your mouth should most definitely stay the fuck closed!!” Fowler snarled dangerously, looking over his shoulder while still keeping Hank at bay.
A few people had hurriedly made their way to where Connor had gone down and slowly helped him into a slumped, half sitting position. A now even darker blue bruise was blooming on most of the left side of his face and a new trail of blue blood trailed down his chin where his teeth had cut his mouth on impact. He was leaning on one arm as the other were wrapped protectively across his chest as his face set in a decidedly pained expression. Eyes pinched shut, brow wrinkled, and teeth gritted tightly together as he let out a sharp hiss at the slightest movement.
Reed let out a degrading half laugh at the display as he watched across his shoulder. “Fucking drama queen as well. Get up you fake, no one’s buying your pity party act.”
“Reed you fucking moron! Androids feel as much pain as you and me! And Connor’s system receptors are even more sensitive because of his prototype sensor advancements!!” Ben reprimanded sharply.
This did throw Reed for a loop momentarily and stopped his struggling in his holds at least. “Bullshit! Since when?” he asked unbelievingly.
“You piece of shit! You haven’t paid the slightest attention since the revolution, have you?!” Hank growled and fought off Fowler’s hands. “I’m FINE Jeffery I just want to check on Connor, alright?”
Fowler reluctantly let Hank go as the Lieutenant made his way to his downed partner, before turning to his disgraced detective with a steaming look. “Androids have always been able to feel pain. They have receptors, sensors and inner wiring that act as nerves and mimic human sensations, as required for them to perform their original programed functions. Before Deviancy, the designated program that register physical sensation didn’t allow outwards reactions and the program would automatically be bypassed if a pain response would otherwise have been registered. A change in the program code mutates when deviancy occurs no longer allowing the program to be bypassed, hence pain as real as yours and mine.” he explained in an eerily calm way. “You should however already know this, as I made all personnel attend a three-day mandatory course in android basic knowledge and technical first aid 6 months after the revolution. So, I see the disciplinary charges I have to administer to you only seem to grow larger Detective Reed!”
“I wasn’t gonna waste three fucking days learning about those hollow plastic cases! It feels pain, so what?! It’s still not human!” Reed hissed angrily pointing at Connor.
Behind them two fellow officers, Thomson and Miller, managed to heft Connor up from the floor and onto a chair. Connor hissed in sharply as the manhandling aggravated his already injured knee and now bruised synthetic chest muscles and bend plating from his fall across the desk. Hank was hoovering protectively at his side and eyed the new injuries with disdain.
“Damn kid, that looks bad. We should have John upstairs look you over.” Hank said, referring to the precinct’s android technician that resided on the third floor, as he eyed Connor’s additional injuries.
“No it’s..” Connor tried to answer but had to pause and reposition himself to ease some pressure of his chest with gritted teeth. “It’s ok, I’m ok.. My self-diagnostic and healing software should still be able to correct most of the damage within a few days..” He wheezed softly, but his LED had started spinning and pulsing an angry red color, betraying how much the added assault and fall had hurt and aggravated his existing injuries.
“See? It’s fine! I’m done with this bullshit.” He turned to leave. “I have patrol anyway, I’m outta here, let’s ride Tina!”
Tina was about to reluctantly follow her partner, but Fowler stopped her with a hand on her shoulder and called Reed back to make the detective halt. “Not so fucking fast Reed! You’re out of your mind boy, if you think this stunt of yours is going to pass without repercussion!” “If you’re going to suspend me then fucking do it! But I meant every word!” Reed fumed. “Jeffery, get that fucking asshole out of my sight before I make him find out how hard it is to pick up his teeth with broken fingers!” Hank growled dangerously, ready to back his words up with action.
“I’m not going to suspend you Reed, but I am giving you a new assignment. A former Cyberlife store that has been turned into a storage unit for the new android care facilities in town reported a string of vandalism on their store front and a plausible break in. Inspect and make sure the culprits are found and fined probably.”
Reed’s eyes nearly bulged out of his head. “You’ve got to be freaking kidding me! I’m a fucking detective! That’s rookie work!!” He protested.
“And until I see you make some goddamn changes in your attitude that’s the kind of work you’re going to get and you’ll be grateful to even have your damn job!! And you still got to take that android aid course when it’s next scheduled!” Fowler countered enraged with a pointed finger. “Now get out of my sight before I let Hank off his chain. The address will be routed to your patrol car’s GPS.”
Reed thinned his lips. “Fine! Come on Tina!” He spit out.
“Don’t be stupid. We’re not using two people’s manpower to clear up a vandalism investigation. Tina is gonna work as a standby support officer on ongoing cases until her partner gets his act the fuck together.” Fowler growled.
Besides him Tina looked mixed between being conflicted and relieved. She’d always been one of the few officers on the force to be on relatively good terms with Reed, hence why she was partnered up with him. When Connor had first joined the force as a machine working for Cyberlife she’d been almost as closeminded as Reed and had found his taunts and jokes about androids funny. Hell, the first time she’d even laid eyes on Connor she’d watched passively as Reed had gut punched him and not even given it any thought or felt a need to step in. But unlike Reed she’d seen and recognized the growing emotion and awareness Connor, and other androids, had underwent before and after deviancy. She’d come to see Connor and the other precinct androids as her friends and colleagues. But she still had to work with Reed on a daily basis. He was still her friend and partner despite her no longer condoning his android discrimination and hatred. She still hadn’t found the courage to call him out on it, however. But having just seen him assault Connor unprovoked (again) made her glad she wasn’t going on shift with him for some time.
Reed fitted the several onlookers with a cold stare, not caring about the disapproving glares he got back. People would turn around soon enough, at some point they’d all get to see that a machine is an unreliable piece of junk, he was sure. He glared to his captain and then lastly at Hank and Connor before grasping his jacket from the back of his chair and stormed out the door.
Fowler turned to address his officers. “Connor, Hank, You’re dismissed. Connor, I don’t want to see you back here until you’re healed one hundred percent, same for you Hank and make sure the stubborn kid actually gets some rest, will you?” Fowler said eyeing Hank expectantly.
“Don’t worry Jeffery, I will. And thanks..” Hank answered.
“I can still assist with case reports and research from home Captain. I can work from a wireless cybernetic link without aggravating or staining my current..”
“Ah! What did I just say detective? Haven’t I made my orders clear?” Fowler interrupted with a raised index finger to silence Connor’s attempts to be allowed to work remotely.
Connor slumped slightly in his seat. “Yes sir.” He answered none the less in respect for his commanding officer.
Fowler patted the android’s shoulder softly, careful not to aggravate any injuries. “I know we’ve come to depend a lot on you lately Connor and I’m sorry for Reed’s actions. But do us all a favor and take the time you need to heal and let us pick up the slack for once, huh?” He added in a reassuring voice.
“yes, alright.. Thank you, Captain.”
“Here buddy, lean on us on your way out, better to not put any weight on that leg. I’ll drive you guys home.” Thomson offered with Miller at his side, ready to assist, both knowing Anderson shouldn’t stain himself more after his own concussion.
“Thank you.” Connor said, grateful for the assistance in his current state and allowed his colleagues and friends to help him. Despite his attempt to conceal his pain Connor’s LED continued to spin an angry red as he was assisted to the parking lot, portraying his current distress clearly.
Hank followed closely after, giving a silent weave and nod to all as they called out encouragements and wishes in Connor’s direction as he was led out of the office.
---
“Look at the mess those kids made! They’ve sprayed graffiti on the front three times before, but this time they also broke the window and went in to damage my stock. I really hope you catch those vandals soon! This can’t go on, a lot of facilities depends on our supplies!” The manager, a young, bespectacled, Asian male named Jun berated.
The broken glass grinded under their feet as detective Reed and he looked at the damage from inside the storage unit. It was indeed a mess as they were surrounded by overturned shelves and scattered android tech, the brick used to brake window laying on the floor. Reed took a deep breath in an effort to at least look professional when he really didn’t give a damn about a vandalized android spare part storage unit.
“Do you have any surveillance footage of the incident?” He muttered unenthusiastically as he made some notes on his pad.
“Yeah, but they’re all covering their faces, so I don’t know if it’ll help a lot. But yeah, I’ll go to the back and download you a copy, wait here.” The manager said and made his way through the chaos to the back office.
Reed took another deep breath and let out a frustrated sigh, this was so far beneath him and such a waste of his time, but it was marginally better than getting suspended completely. While waiting for Jun to return he started looking around the mess around him. All sorts of android tech had been scattered when the intruders had overturned two floor-to ceiling shelves in their haste. Wirings, optical unites, thirium bags, all that kind of shit. He kicked a cylindrical piping, not caring it was technically a crime scene. Unfortunately, he kicked it hard enough for it to slide across the floor and knock over a plastic container, spilling its contents, making a racket.
Reed muttered a soft curse and went to pick the items up. He was wise enough to know he was already in deep enough shit and a bad idea to give cause for a field compliant. He world never admit it out loud, but Fowler could be scary as hell when he was in a mood and he was already on thin ice.
He knelt and saw he’d knocked over a box of what looked to be some kind of high-tech remote control. It had the same white shine as that lightweight plasticmetal android frames was made from. He picked up one, it had a comfortable fit in his hand and a HD display lit up the screen immediately with the words “Enter Android Service Code”.
“What happened?” Jun asked as he suddenly appeared behind Reed, making the detective jump slightly in surprise.
“Oh uh, I accidently kicked a pipe and knocked over this box of remotes, sorry.” He quickly explained.
Jun’s eyes widened as he saw what Reed had found. “Oh shit! I thought I’d gotten rid of those! These have been discontinued and banned since the revolution! Thank God those brats didn’t steal them!”
This peaked Reed’s attention. “Really? Why, what do they do?”
Jun bend over Reed shoulder and pointed at the touch display. “It’s a manual override remote Cyberlife technicians used in maintenance in most of their newer android models. It’s used to alter settings, test and control multiple functions without doing an invasive procedure. Everything from sensor sensitivity, biocomponent functions, synthetic muscles, you name it.”
“Uh in English please?” Reed deadpanned.
Jun pointed to the display and elaborated. “You enter the service code that comes with every registered android made by Cyberlife. Afterwards you have essentially full control over the registered Android’s body.”
“But why didn’t Cyberlife just use it as a weapon during the revolution then? If as you say it really can be used to gain almost full control of an Android.” Reed asked as he turned the remote over and eyed it with intrigue.
“It uses an Android’s LED disk as a receiver and luckily most androids removed their LED when they deviated, making it useless, so it wasn’t a reliable solution and not enough to stop an entire revolution.” Jun explained. “Also, it only works if you’re within a 30ft radius from the registered android and can only be used on one android at a time. But since a few androids have chosen to keep their LEDs after the revolution, what was fundamentally used as a tool for maintenance and adjustments can now be used as a weapon on them. That’s why they have been banned and are to be destroyed. Good thing you actually found these, now I can get rid of them!”
“Right, right.” Reed concurred, still fixated on the small remote in his hand. “But first thing first, did you find the surveillance footage?”
Jun snapped his fingers and turned on his heel. “Right! Sorry detective, the noise distracted me. I’ll be back in a moment.” And disappeared once again to find the footage.
The moment Jun had left Reed was quick to pocket the remote in his hand and hurried to pack up the rest on the floor. A small smirk crept on to his face as a plan started to fester in his mind. Soon everybody at the precinct would see that a machine is an unreliable piece of junk and now he knew just how he was going to prove it.
---
“Hey Connor! Welcome back buddy!”
“I’m glad to see you back on your feet man!”
“Good to see you Connor, we’ve missed you!”
Reed listened with loathing as Connor made his way through the office to his desk, as the surrounding officers and reception staff welcomed the Tin Can back after a three-day absence it had taken for it to heal up from Reed’s assault. Connor was smiling openly as he accepted the warm greetings and shoulder pats sincerely, clearly basking in the attention.
“Enjoy it while you can prick.” Reed whispered under his breath. The white remote control nestling warmly in his hand, hidden in his jacket pocket. It wouldn’t be long now until he could make his first move, but he forced himself to be a little patient. Since his confrontation with Connor, he’d received a cold shoulder from most of his coworkers, even Tina was avoiding him! And while he mostly didn’t care what people thought of him it was making his everyday work life more complicated than he’d like. More so, he was already sick of working rookie cases. So first he needed to make it look like he was at least making an effort to redeem himself and get along with it and get accepted back into the team. As long as people believed he was trying to alter his attitude and accept him back in their midst again no one would be the wiser anyway. Soon they’d all see it was him who’d been right all along. In the long run, it’d make it worth for him to swallow his pride for a short time.
He’d have to time this as best as possible. When he saw Captain Fowler exit his office, to no doubt welcome the android back himself, Reed was quick to make his move and stood from his own seat. He made sure to make his walk to the plastic man’s desk seem slightly hesitant and defensive. Ignoring the piercing glare he received from Anderson as he made his way to stand in front of the android’s desk. When Connor looked up at him warily, clearly bracing himself for another confrontation, he made sure Fowler was within earshot before speaking.
“Hey Ti..” catching himself from messing up already Reed bit his tongue and tried again.
“Hey Connor.. I.. I’m sorry about, you know..”
“Not sure he does Reed, please elaborate!” Anderson butted in, his arms crossed defensively and a scowl on his face.
Reed suppressed his rising anger but managed before continuing. “I’m sorry about hitting you and talking shit the other day. I’ll.. Try to do better in the future..” He finished quickly, hoping he managed to sound sincere despite almost gagging in repulsion from having to utter an apology to that thing.
Connor however beamed brightly. “Thank you, detective Reed, I appreciate and accept your apology.”
“Of course you do you stupid, naïve piece of junk.” Reed thought to himself, but only offered a slight nod in acceptance.
“Well done Reed, there might be hope for you after all.” Fowler called out from behind in an approving manner.
Reed turned, pretending he hadn’t noticed his Captains’ presence.
“That’s what I want to hear. I’ll allow you to work your normal cases again, but make sure to keep your shit together this time. If I catch you assaulting Connor or any other officer in this precinct again whether it be physically or verbally, I’ll have you demoted to traffic officer with a snap of my fingers. Have I made myself clear?”
“Crystal clear, sir.” Reed answered quickly, suppressing a smirk.
“Great, get Tina to fill you in on current cases and lets all get back to working as a team, alright?” He called out, addressing the whole office.
All officers muttered an affirmative in response to their Captain’s open order. All except Hank, who still sat with his arms crossed and aimed a glare at Reed, still not trusting the other’s motives for suddenly apologizing. Connor however seemed to have taken the apology at face value and seemed both happy and relieved by it. The kid was always so damn goodhearted, always believing in the best of everyone. Despite their line of work and all the crazy shit they had to deal with everyday Connor’s ability to stay positive and compassionate had only grown since his deviancy. And Hank was grateful for this, it was what had gotten him back up from his pit of despair and alcohol, making him believe he was still fighting the good fight. Connor had given him the hope and spark he’d thought he’d lost when he’d lost his son. But the Reed he knows wouldn’t offer an apology, least of all to Connor, not without an ulterior motive. But Hank didn’t have the heart to tell Connor that. The kid had enough to deal with without having to feel like he need to watch his back while on work. Hank would just have to watch it for him then.

19, 22 and 23? :^)
19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?
Tbh there are a lot of things I hate, although by this point it's only very certain parts of the fandom that have these problems, since most of the shitty people have lost interest by this point. If I had to choose just one thing though, it'd be the overwhelming focus on white, male characters over female and/or characters of color. And there are a lot of areas where this shows up. One major example is that a lot of people like the idea of Connor, Hank, Gavin, and Nines (all white, male characters, mind you) staying at the DPD even after:
The DPD was the one (along with Cyberlife) responsible for the deaths, arrests, and brutal treatment of androids, the main oppressed group in the game's world
Connor and Nines are a part of that oppressed group, and at least Hank is shown in game to support them
Connor has already worked at the DPD and was routinely called an "it" (which as someone who is nonbinary and has been called "it" knows how insulting that can be and understands the need to get away from situations where that happens), was allowed to be sent to his death by, and was routinely harassed and nearly murdered, or in some playthroughs actually murdered, by workers at the DPD (*ahem Gavin ahem*)
Hank (if he is your friend) risked his career just to cause a distraction for Connor to keep him alive
Just because the android revolution was successful doesn't mean the DPD was going to follow that. I mean, the androids were heavily compared to African Americans in this game, and we all know how the current police system treats them (and if you don't, pay attention to the news, like, ever. Also read Jim Crow as that book is very informative on the oppression of blacks in the entire incarceration system as well as before and after that)
So I hope it would be pretty obvious to any sane person that suggesting these characters would join/remain in the DPD after everything is offensive on all sorts of levels.
In addition to that, you also have some people saying that they only cared about Connor's story, or that his was the only good one. The female protagonist that risks her own life several times to save that of a child (no matter if she is human or android)? Not important. The (half) black protagonist who is shot by police, has to rebuild himself, and leads his own people to freedom? Who cares? The only important story to these people is the white, male, cop android who spends most of his time hunting down the good guys. And if some people honestly prefer Connor's story because of their own reasons, that's fine. And yes, Kara and Markus's stories have lots of problems. But Connor's does too, and none of this gives people an excuse to ignore the other characters, especially since they are the minority characters. Then, there are also the people who say Connor's machine path was better than his deviant path, or that him being replaced by Nines in the end was unfair. And... what the fuck??? I mean, I get it, it's fun to play through different options, and Connor is hella badass in the machine path. But he is also hella badass in the deviant path (killing the guards in the elevator, possibly the team at the bottom if he doesn't catch the security camera, fighting Sixty, walking in front of all the androids he freed, like, come on), and he also, like, has morals and isn't oppressive??? In the machine route, he kills his own people, including those who just want to be free and might have been completely pacifist the entire way through. So I'm sorry, anyone who thinks his machine path is better is just looking for an excuse to be oppressive without openly admitting it.
Then there's the Gavin apologizers. While fanon Gavin is awesome, some people have way overstepped the line of redemption and allowing oppression. I've seen posts defending Gavin's in-game behavior, just because he refers to androids as "he" on occasion. This is despite:
Suggesting "roughing up," or being violent to Shaolin (the HK400 in "The Interrogation")
Insulting his partner, Chris, when he doesn't forcibly move Shaolin against Shaolin's will
Pointing a gun at Connor after Connor rightfully says to stop touching Shaolin for both succeeding the mission and for Shaolin's sake, and only stepping down after Hank points a gun at him and even after insults Connor
Punching Connor right in the thirium pump regulator and then pushing his head right where his LED is in the break room if Connor refuses to get him a coffee
Insulting and threatening Connor in the same scene even if Connor follows all of his demands
Insulting Hank's alcoholism in the Eden Club "it's starting to stink of booze in here"
Purposely pushing Connor to the side in the same scene
Trying to literally murder Connor and admitting he'd wanted to kill him ever since he first saw Connor, sometimes successfully
Both physically and verbally assaulting Connor
I forgive very easily and strongly believe in redemption, don't get me wrong. But trying to excuse Gavin's behaviors is so inexcusable, especially when most of his aggressions are towards androids, the oppressed minority.
Now, let's look at Ao3, shall we? Let's see how many fics posted there are with each of the "main" (including Gavin and Nines since even though they are not main characters in canon they are in fanon) characters... (also, keep in mind, I gathered this data about a month ago so it might not be completely up to date):
Connor: 16,150
Markus: 5,395
Kara: 1,504
Hank: 13,135
Nines: 9,807
Gavin: 9,939
Amanda: 1,177
Chloe: 1,521
North: 3,056
Simon: 3,192
Josh: 1,965
Alice: 1,098
Luther: 848
Rose: 193
This means that certain characters get unequal amounts of attention:
White: 59,042
Black: 9,578
Male: 60,431
Female: 8,549
White, Male: 52,223
White, Female: 7,179
Black, Male: 8,208
Black, Female: 1,370
Well, this says a lot. Now, some people reading this might realize that there are more white and male characters to begin with, so it could be fair even with their numbers being higher. So, okay, let's see the average amount of works a single character in each of the above categories would have (so divide each of the values by the number of characters in that category) (also I rounded to the tenth place aka first decimal point):
White: 6,560.2
Black: 1,915.6
Male: 7,553.9
Female: 1,424.8
White, Male: 10,444.6
White, Female: 1,794.8
Black, Male: 2,736
Black, Female: 685
If anything, these are even more telling. And if you don't believe me, look on Ao3 and calculate these yourself, because you'll get the same thing.
To be clear, I don't have anything against Connor, Hank, or any of the white and/or male characters. I even like the way that the fandom has redeemed Gavin. But the fandom has not done the same job of redeeming other characters, especially the minority ones, and pays way less attention to them, and that needs to be called out with evidence by someone.
Anyway, I spent a LONG time on that first question, so I'll try to make the next answers shorter!
22. Popular character you hate?
There aren't any popular characters that I thoroughly hate. The only characters I hate are ones that are already highly unpopular (Todd, Zlatko, Perkins). If we're talking canon characters, I do hate Gavin with a flaming passion. I mean, he is meant to represent police brutality. But fanon Gavin is cool with me, so I'm not sure exactly how much this counts.
There is one semi-popular character that I dislike though, and that is Kamski. I'm half-counting him again because within the fandom there are very mixed opinions. I personally dislike him mainly because of his treatment of one of his Chloe's: he is willing to let her get shot in the head and killed just to find a dumb answer to his Kamski test just because he feels like it. If Connor doesn't shoot Chloe, he tells Connor he's deviant, knowing full well that Amanda and Cyberlife are watching being the one to design the program, endangering Connor. While he arguably is responsible for deviancy and wants androids to succeed, that doesn't make up for those facts.
Another character that half-counts is Daniel. There are mixed opinions within the fandom on him as well, with some arguing that he is only wanting to not get replaced and protect himself. However, since his first response was to kill the dad, and then he proceeded to shoot at least 3 more cops, killing 2, and hold Emma, the young girl he had been friends with for years hostage, even though she had nothing to do with his replacement. You can't argue that he didn't want to kill Emma and only used her as protection for himself, either, as there are multiple endings where he tries and sometimes succeeds in killing Emma, even when he is also killing himself. I'm not closed to a redemption arc for him, but his in-game actions are inexcusable. He's the one deviant who truly has no valid defense for his actions.
23. Unpopular character you love?
There are a few. I absolutely adore North, Josh, Adam, and Alice, even though the fandom has conflicted opinions on them. Then again, none of these characters are really considered unpopular, just not as popular as others with a select few that don't like them. With North, I've been in this fandom since a few months after its release, when there was a lot of North hatred, and was actually in a group called the North Protection Squad lol. However, now most people like her, and she's really grown in popularity. With Josh, it's less that he's hated, and more that he's ignored. People say that Simon was the peaceful option when he was really the neutral, and recently I've seen more people against Josh's opinions on the revolution. While I don't always agree with Josh being so passive and undemanding (neither do I agree with North's violence), he's still an awesome character with some very valid points. Then, I do understand why some people dislike Adam, as at first he's against androids and almost reveals Kara and the others. However, if you meet him at the border crossing, he apologizes to Kara and changes his mind, promising to help androids. While he may start out scared and not on the right side, he does have a good heart and ends up making the right decisions in the end. With Alice, I haven't seen many people hate her, either, although I have seen some saying she's annoying and lacks a personality. I agree that she lacks a personality, although I argue that's the writers' faults rather than her character's (as are problems with other characters, I mean David Cage wrote this so what were we expecting). I also don't think she's annoying, as after all she is only 9 (in human terms), doesn't admit she's an android because she's scared Kara will reject her (and Kara actually can reject her for being an android, leaving her completely on her own in a world that wants her dead. Also, living her whole life with Todd can absolutely not help her feel more secure with who she is or make her trust Kara to still love her for it), and she is only cold and feels sick because her model of android is literally designed to replicate human sickness and discomfort (and it's clear she doesn't know how to turn them off, because even after Kara knows she's an android Kara still has to help Alice not feel cold anymore. Also, this is November in Detroit, in which the average temperature is 42°F (5.6°C). There are also scenes where it is snowing, meaning the temperature is below freezing. Still, despite the temperatures, in some scenes not having a coat, and feeling sick, she says Kara and Luther can't stop because of her, risks her life to save Kara's if you fail QTEs, and says she's "fine" even when she's cold to comfort Kara. So if you think she can be annoying, yeah, all 9-year-olds can be. But if you think she's annoying enough to actually hate her, idek what to say).
In terms of characters that are really unpopular, I actually like Leo. His actions at first are inexcusable. I mean, accusing Carl of loving an android more than hin, insulting Markus and treating him as less than human, threatening him, breaking into Carl's house and attempting to steal his paintings for drug money, and framing Markus for Carl's death leading to him getting shot and nearly killed are obviously not okay things to do. However, he is clearly on drugs, specifically red ice, the most dangerous drug in the world. Also, if you decide to push Markus leading Carl to still be alive, when you return to Carl's house, you can find a message Leo sent to Carl in which he apologizes for everything and promises it won't happen again. In the extras section, you also find out Carl missed out on Leo's whole childhood, only first meeting him once he was much older. Given that Carl spends all of his days pleasantly conversing with Markus while ignoring Leo, not calling him, only talking to Leo once he comes around himself, and doesn't even argue when Leo says Carl doesn't love him, it's almost fair that Leo thinks the way he does. Since he's also high on drugs throughout the story, at least up until Markus gets shot, we also know that the Leo we see isn't the real Leo. Later, if Carl is dead and Markus visits his grave, he encounters Leo again. This time, when Leo sees Markus he is only shocked. Now, off of red ice, not only is he going to see Carl's grave, expressing love for his father, he also doesn't try to hurt Markus, insult him, or anything mean or dehumanizing. His expression lacks any signs of aggression. It was only when he was high that he was such an asshole. Although that doesn't excuse his behavior, it does give a reason for it, and by the end I consider him redeemed.
~~~
Wow... that was a long response to a very short ask. No need to read all that (although I would highly suggest reading my first answer, at least, since that does contain some very relevant points). Although then again, if you've made it here, you've probably already read all that. In which case I would love to hear your opinions if you're willing to share (as well as anyone who sees this!) I guess I just had a lot of opinions that I needed to put out in the world lol, so thank you sm for the ask!!!!! 💛💛💛
God idek if this is gonna be coherent but especially after watching reawakening, all I have on my head is a DBH/Not me fusion - do not ask me how it works or what happens but like the potential???? Black and white as nines and Connor ??? Especially with Nines’ line in reawakening about how Connor chose to defy Amanda/become defiant whereas he was forcibly awoken vs black and whites different ways of approaching the need to revolt idk I just needed to spit this out and you’re the only one on my dash with the overlap of these two 😂
Oh, this is really clever! The more I think about it, the more parallels and possibilities I see!
Black and White being identical because they’re androids from the same model line, distinguishable only by their vastly different personalities and their model numbers. (Ironically they’d be reversed in position vs personality with Black as Connor being White’s predecessor and the “older twin” but also the cold and aloof one, while White is the youngest and Black’s intended replacement *cough* who only actually replaces him in The Bad Ending *cough* but also the peppier, sweeter, gentler sibling.)
That would probably make their mom Black’s Amanda and their dad White’s Amanda, since those are the authority figures that they each respectively break free from in order to gain their independence and free will. But it’s also perfect because Black would fight tooth and nail to break free from his program (like Connor did) while While would’ve just been presented an easy opportunity by external forces (like Nines).
Another possible scenario would be the Garage gang as the Jericho gang. I like to imagine the only difference is that Markus didn’t get the memo about being discreet and adopted literally All Of The Androids. Does that make Gumpa Markus? Alternatively Black rising from getting half beaten to death and getting vengeance, or White joining a pre-established social activism group but making it stronger and building up its number of supporters could be Markus? But functionally, Black and White would be North (the fighter) and Josh (the peacekeeper). Oh gosh, soooo many options, so much potential!
Wait, okay, and this would work so well for Danyok too! That final scene of Connor struggling against his programming and almost being forced to shoot Markus to stop the revolution? That would work perfectly for Dan! Picture him being a police android, going deviant, joining the gang, and then having his program reactivated. Maybe it was in his program to infiltrate them to begin with and he only breaks his program after arresting them OR he’s been placed under careful watch after androids everywhere have been acting up and when he turns deviant, they take him in and “fix” his programming? Either way, he breaks free of his programming partway through the arrest and helps rescue the gang and all is well with the world.
I’m in love with this AU idea! If you or anyone else wants to write this, just know you’ll have at least one loyal reader! (And if you don’t wanna write it… might I offer to do so?)
sorry people have been sending you shitty messages. we should talk about something better! what made you ship markus and connor?
it’s honestly fine. asking people to re-evaluate their actions can wind them up but as a society, we’d be better off for it if more people did it. personally, interrogating my own feelings and biases and actions just going through life has really allowed me to grow into a better person and i hope other people peel back their defensiveness and have those internal conversations with themselves too.
NOW ON TO THE VERY FUN N SEXY PART OF THIS QUESTION
connor and markus are really interesting to me... i haven’t even PLAYED deviant connor yet because i’m saving him for my third playthrough but like they only have a couple scenes together but there’s SO MUCH happening in those scenes
so like on connor’s end:
like all through the game, connor’s been very obviously grappling with something, like even if you keep him on a clear machine playthrough, the fact that he considers more empathetic options (even at the detriment of the mission) suggests that he has the capacity to make them and has to actively avoid them — that avoidance itself is not machine behaviour. machines go from point a to point b as efficiently as possible. empathy is not factored in because empathy is not a hard fact that can be programmed into a machine’s decision-making process. the fact that connor can contemplate less efficient, more empathetic routes from his very first choice in his very first scene? that suggests that even though he’s been built from the GROUND up for the sole, express purpose of hunting down deviants — and later, dismantling their entire movement by hunting their leader — that tendency in him isn’t latent, it’s already there. and he’s actively fighting it, suppressing it, pushing it aside because if he’s not a machine with a mission, then what is he? like with kara and markus, they show emotions pre-deviancy, but most of their choices are pretty one-note alternatives to the same path. do i clean this first, or this? do i play the piano or play chess? the first REAL decisions that they make that go against their assigned tasks break down those walls.
connor makes decisions like that over and over (letting a deviant escape to save hank isn’t exactly hunting deviants now is it?) but his wall does not budge. he doesn’t even think about tearing it down.
and then he finds markus...
just the vibez of the deviant hunter finding the deviant leader and IMMEDIATELY unravelling? folding? just... something clicks into place and he simply *must* tear down those walls? he’s got a gun in his hand but he can’t kill this man, he’s only just found him and now he’s seeing the world with new eyes.
and once they make it out of crossroads, he dedicates himself to this new mission that’s yes one part going to support the cause, but also one part a way of proving himself to markus who (if you play it that way) has taken a chance on him. like yes it’s self-sacrificing and risky and borderline suicidal, but if he pulls it off... and he wants to prove himself to this man so badly... and if he does it well.... “you did it markus” “we did it” THEY’RE UNITED THEY’RE TOGETHER!
on markus’ end:
we obviously see a lot more of connor thinking about markus before they meet than the other way around since connor’s focused on finding him and markus has uh bigger things to worry about BUT i find it so telling that he sees connor and knows exactly who he is and he’s not scared, he doesn’t even seem particularly angry??? he seems more puzzled than anything.
connor has a gun pointed straight at him, and if markus knows who connor is, he knows he won’t miss, and markus just??? walks towards him????
so markus clearly knows who connor is, has been thinking about him at least a bit, probably talked to whatever deviants escaped connor and got to jericho about him but even if you kill every deviant you encounter as connor, markus STILL knows all this so he’s obviously kept tabs on him and that’s almost more interesting? like if connor’s mowed down every android in his path and clearly won’t hesitate to do the same to markus, but markus still sees something in him. a stitch that can be pulled loose, something that can get connor to really *see*, so he focuses all his energy on prodding at that stitch until it opens up. (and if it doesn’t here, well, he still doesn’t kill connor, he just dips and gives connor one more chance to open his eyes)
BUT GENERALLY, he gets connor to get it. he gets connor to get something no one else has been able to do all game, including hank and connor himself. markus looks at connor and really *sees him* for what he could be and that makes connor be able to see himself and that just speaks to markus and who he is as a person. always believing in more, believing in better. and as soon as markus does that, he takes connor in, unquestioningly, he’s an ally now — at least all through the remainder of crossroads. it doesn’t matter what happened before or what he did. they’re in this together now. and when connor literally places his life in his hands after, in the church (CHURCH!! HALLOWED GROUND..!!!), he is judge, jury and executioner and with that power he can choose to forgive him, this man he just met and barely knows and yet understands down to his core.
there’s also other little things, just like how red string of fate it is that they’re the only rk prototypes that exist, that they both assumed they were alone before they knew of each other... the way connor looks when he’s listening to markus’ recording talk in stratford tower??? that’s not even a choice you can make in the game???? it MAKES you watch him look like that and then LIE TO HANK???? what am i supposed to make of it WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO MAKE OF IT?????
if they stay on their destined paths to kill each other, in the most extreme of scenarios the world literally ends but if they free themselves and team up they literally save the world, each other, their entire people.... like!!!! HELLO ROMANCE?! they already speedrun the enemies-to-friends canonically if you play it that way... I WANT THE FULL RUN, I WANT THE ENEMIES TO FRIENDS TO LOVERS SPEEDRUN.
and i just like the aesthetics of this soft boy painter who is also a badass revolutionary leader and a literal murderbot who’s perfected the art of manipulation but also gets all goofy over dogs.
also, for the millionth time, consider: the inherent eroticism of trying to kill each other
Kinktober Day 4: Public, Convin
Another Connor/Gavin! So this one is super long, like 10k words, so if you want you can also read it here on my A03. Anyway, hope you enjoy!
---------------------------------
They were on a vacation, well, it was a forced vacation but still. The whole office had gotten tired of their shit, and Connor often heard people (including Hank) murmuring about tension and rooms.
They were even getting paid too, so it wasn't like he could even complain so much. He could complain because instead of just going to some beach and staying far away from each other as possible, Gavin (and Hank, and Tina, and literally everyone who heard) decided it was best to go on a road trip. Across the entire country, stopping to visit tourist stops or sleep.
So that was why Connor was sitting in the passenger seat of Gavin's truck-a 1990 Ford F150 XLT-his arms crossed staring out the window.
The silence was so awkward even with Gavin's music playing, and he had no idea what to do. He could fall back on his programming, but he wasn't going to resort to being a machine just because someone couldn't stop being an ass for two seconds.
This was probably the longest he's been silent and they'd only been on the road for an hour.
It was simultaneously the most boring and interesting trip he'd been on. He hadn't gotten to travel outside of Detroit except for when he was briefly flown to DC. That had been an interesting and incredibly stressful trip that he never wanted to repeat again.
He had a feeling this would be a similar situation sadly. His first real vacation and he had to take it with Reed of all people. Why did the universe seem to hate him so much?
The silence kept up for the next four hours, but at least the scenery was nice. He gently drummed his fingers against his leg, enjoying the music. Another small thing to be grateful for, Gavin didn't have awful music tastes.
"That's it. You've never been on a road trip right?" Gavin asked so suddenly Connor almost jumped out of his skin.
He looked over but Gavin's eyes were still trained on the road. Connor wasn't exactly sure where this was going, but perhaps he could indulge him. "I have not."
"Ok, so we're gonna play the ABC game. You can't use cars, only signs. When you see a letter you call it out. It's whoever sees it first, and you can't use a sign twice. If it's the same sign but in a different place then that's fine. No using your weird android powers." Gavin drummed on the steering wheel once he turned down the music. "If I gotta be stuck in this car with you you're gonna have the full experience."
Connor blinked multiple times, trying to take it all in. A game? He did a quick search and found they were incredibly common and used to pass the time or stay focused. "Very well, that sign there has an A." He points out.
Gavin huffed and looked around, squinting slightly. "B! Hah!"
Connor couldn't help the small grin as he put his feet on the ground and leaned forward. He was so going to win this game.
They called out the letters sometimes loud enough to be considered yelling. It was more of a competition than a calming game. Yet it got increasingly difficult and it had both of them dying to see any sign.
It was only three more hours later when Gavin and he both pointed at the same sign, "Z!"
There was a long bit of silence before they both broke into cheers, clapping, and even giving each other small pushes on the shoulder.
"Fuck yeah! Alright, so I'm thinking some food, bathroom then keep going. You can drive and pick the music." Gavin said, more lively than he'd ever seen him.
Connor felt something odd in his chest, something he didn't dare identify. Yet it was so strong when he watched Reed. "Very well, but I do not need food or a bathroom break. How much longer would you like for me to drive. Since I'm an android I can keep going without becoming tired."
Gavin easily waved him off. "Not long, just enough to get us until nightfall, then we can find some shitty motel. Just don't want to get burnt out on the first day."
Connor gave a soft hum and leaned back onto the chair. "I must admit, I'm surprised you chose this over a beach or something like that."
Gavin chuckles and Connor's stomach twisted. "Yeah, well… I've been meaning to but never had the time. They're literally paying me to babysit you."
He could tell there was no real malice behind his words, yet he could also tell he was lying. Why would Gavin feel the need to lie about this answer, it wasn't anything truly personal.
Yet he'd let it slide, maybe this trip would somehow work out their differences. After he could ask again, and maybe he'd give an honest answer.
But it was still a bit odd Gavin lied. He often didn't and so he always took note when he did. Sometimes it was hard to tell and he assumed there was more to it than just yes or no. Like when he asked if Gavin really hated androids and Gavin had said yes. It came off as a lie but also the truth.
They pulled off the highway once there were signs of there actually being something to eat that Gavin liked.
Gavin gave a long sigh as they waited for the drive-through, but thankfully they didn't have to wait too terribly long.
"Ok, you want anything? 'Know you don't eat but still. A soda, anything?" Gavin asked once they pulled up to the order screen.
Connor looked over the menu before giving a small hum. "A small drink, surprise me." He could drink, not in excessively but more than he could actually eat. Sadly the place didn't offer android products, so he'd have to stick with a drink.
Gavin nodded and ordered his, but made Connor plug his hears and hum. Apparently, he wanted to test to see how well Connor could identify the drink without using his 'android powers'.
He even had to keep his eyes closed as Gavin got their order and paid (Connor offered to but got turned down fast), taking his food and drink, putting them down before parking.
"Alrighty, open your mouth, and you can't use your tongue." Gavin said, tapping Connor's chin.
"Technology I have to use my-" but he was cut off by a straw being shoved into his mouth. He could hear Gavin snickering so he just held the straw in his mouth, playing with it.
There was a soft sound of Gavin's breath catching and the hand lowering. Connor was quick to grab the drink, just in case, but instead, he hand rested on top of Gavin's.
He took a long sip, eyes still closed. He hadn't tasted many sodas yet this one didn't taste exactly like any of the ones he had. "Pepsi?" Yet that couldn't be right.
"Open your eyes now, dipshit." Gavin moved his hand away and let Connor hold it. "You got it wrong, by the way. But you can use your tongue now."
Connor nodded and instantly analyzed it before sighing. Of course, he didn't recognize the taste. "This is a combination of Pepsi and Rootbeer! That's cheating, Detective." He scolded but still drank more. He had to admit, it did taste really good.
"Gavin."
"I'm sorry?"
"Call me Gavin. I don't need to hear my rank the whole trip, and you calling me by my real name isn't going to kill me… Connor."
He had to admit, it did sound a bit odd coming from Gavin. He could tell he felt the same since he grimaced like he tasted something sour.
"Very well Gavin. I just assumed you preferred otherwise, since the last time I did use it you tried to kill me." He sassed, smirking slightly.
Yet Gavin winced and ducked his head. "Yeah… that wasn't my best idea. I'm, well, I'm glad I failed?"
That was as close of an apology as he was probably ever going to get. "I am glad you did too. Though, I do apologize for using excessive force. I could have handled the situation better." He did feel bad about that, he hated to see Gavin passed out on the floor even if he had tried to kill him. He never liked killing or harming anyone, but sometimes it was necessary to protect his own life.
Gavin snorted then it quickly devolved into honest laughter. Connor was beyond confused but couldn't help the small chuckle that escaped him. "Wait, what's so funny?"
"I-I was literally," Gavin tried to say between laughs, "I held a gun to your fucking head, Con. You could have easily killed me but you left me. Sure it hurt like a bitch after, but we're both alive. I deserved more than that very quick fight."
For some reason, the nickname was more shocking than anything else. It was the first nickname not derived from anger or hate. "I should have just detained you. Or managed to talk you down."
"The only way you could've talked me down was if you suddenly became deviant."
Connor frowned and tried to understand what that meant. "Wait, what?"
Gavin's eyes went wide and he grabbed the bag. "Uh, I'll throw this away, pee then we can get back on the road."
Connor didn't even have time to ask him to wait before Gavin was out of the car and jogging to the restaurant.
What could Gavin had meant by that? Did he have more negation tactics as a deviant? He couldn't of anything he didn't already know.
Yet that also offered the idea that Gavin knew about the true meaning of deviation, that he knew it wasn't simple errors but real emotions.
But that also brought up why Gavin had actually confronted him in the first place. He had assumed it was because Gavin had simply had enough of him and was finally taking his chance. He could have easily used Connor disobeying direct orders to justify it too.
How could him being deviant have stopped Gavin from attacking?
He was shaken from his thoughts when Gavin tapped on his window. Right, he was supposed to drive now.
They traded spots silently, and Gavin stayed quiet except to softly sing along to the songs. His voice was nice and oddly calming. Connor decided not to sign considering he's never actually done it before. He knew android could, I mean, look at the revolution. Yet he hadn't really done it himself yet.
He kept driving, following the highway, and only changing directions when Gavin directed him. Connor could tell he was getting sleepy by the adorable why his blinks got longer and the deeper he slid into his chair.
He didn't even say anything as Connor pulled off the highway and then found a 'shitty motel'.
Gavin's eyes were closed and Connor hated to wake him. He doubted he could sleep heavy enough that Connor could get them each a room, carry Gavin to his without waking him.
He looked around and found a piece of paper and a pen. He quickly wrote down he was getting them rooms before slipping out of the car. He didn't need Gavin waking up and wondering where he'd gone.
The lights were on so he walked in, and looked around. Shitty was a pretty good description actually. He didn't even want to scan it to know how many germs there were.
"How can I help you?" A woman asked, walking into the area, a bright smile on her face.
"I'd like two rooms please." He stepped up to the counter but thought better of leaning against it.
"Alright, well we got three rooms, one has two beds and it's non-smoking, and the other two are smoke friendly. Which would'ya like?"
Connor sighed, rubbing at his LED. He despised the smell of smoke and he knew Gavin had only recently quit. Being in a room full of that smell wouldn't help. And he wanted to get them a room now considering how tired Gavin seems.
Fuck it.
"I'll take the room with two please." It was an ok compromise but he doubted Gavin would see it that way.
The woman nodded and grabbed the keys after Connor had paid for the night. It was pretty cheap, but he guessed it was from lack of quality.
He jogged back to the trunk, opening to get in and grab his bag, but also wake Gavin. He was slumped against the window, mouth slightly open, and looking completely relaxed.
"Gavin, come on, we're at a motel." He whispered, reaching out. Instead of shaking his shoulder, Connor's treacherous hands decided to gently card through Gavin's soft hair. Neither of them had styled their hair so it easily flopped into Gavin's face and felt silky smooth under Connor's fingers.
He wondered if Gavin liked his hair being played with or not. Maybe he liked it tug-no. He was not going down that rabbit hole.
He quickly snatched his hand away when he saw Gavin's eyes blink open. He looked around then back to Connor with almost a confused expression. "Con?" His voice was a bit scratchy and Connor was ready to die. He just looked so soft like this, so much more at ease.
"Hey, we're stopping for the night. I got us a room but there was only one left." A small but necessary lie.
Gavin groaned and mumbled around reading enough fanfiction but he pushed himself up, running his own hand through his hair. "There's more than one bed right?"
"Of course. I would have carried you but I thought you'd prefer being woken up." He reached behind and grabbed Gavin's bag for him, placing it in his lap before turning off the truck and pocketing the keys.
Gavin mumbled some more but slid out of the truck with a huff, following silently to the room.
It wasn't the worst motel, but Connor really hated the number of germs he found. He walked around the room, checking everything before looking out the back window. There was a small stream that flowed behind the building and Connor unlatched the window so they'd be able to hear it. Not necessarily the safest idea, but Connor was there and Gavin could actually take care of himself.
Gavin dumped his bag onto the beg closest to the door, pulling out a change of clothes before muttering about using the bathroom first. It was almost like he forgot that Connor had absolutely no need for a bathroom.
He took the time to change, folding his clothes before putting them in his bag. He grabbed his pajama bottoms with cartoon robot heads on them, a gift from Hank.
He normally went shirtless but thought better of it. Not just for Gavin's sake, but he preferred to cover as much skin as possible before touching anything in this room.
He was odd that way. He had no problem sampling evidence or putting anything in his mouth he was dared to. Yet on occasions like these, his brain gladly supplied every disgusting thing and it made his skin crawl.
He heard the shower start but Gavin didn't even take more than ten minutes before he was stepping into the room again. Connor was still standing in front of his bed, fiddling with his bag. Hank had given him a gift but now felt a bit too self-conscious to pull it out.
"Cute." Gavin mumbled at him before flopping onto his own bed, only taking the time to get under the covers before falling right back asleep.
Gavin had called him cute. Or maybe it was just the pajama bottoms that were cute, and not him. Or he was simply too tired to know what he was saying, so instead of good night, it came out as cute.
Yeah, he didn't believe that last one either.
Connor gave one last look at his bag before zipping it closed. Once he had his own room to himself, then he'd use it. For now, he laid down and let himself be pulled into stasis.
He woke up fairly early to the sound of Gavin moving around. He was a bit surprised that he hadn't woken up first considering how tired Gavin had seemed the night before. He checked his clock and saw it was only six in the morning.
Perhaps he often went to bed early, but Connor had noticed he stayed at the precinct almost as long as he did. It was a bit concerning, to say the least. Maybe this trip would give Gavin the extra sleep and relaxation he needed. Surely the man was always on edge with the lack of sleep.
He stretched out on the bed and just listened to the small stream. The bed creaked with every small movement, the germs made his skin crawl, Gavin was the only person he knew for miles, but it wasn't so bad. Oddly freeing in a way. Sure he worried about what was happening back in Detroit, but he trusted Hank not to get into too much of a slump. If he did Connor would be back as soon as he could.
He let his eyes slipped closed again, but he had to hold his breath when he heard something unexpected. He could hear Gavin singing a song Connor knew had played on the trip here. It was fairly upbeat and he thought he could hear the sound of heavier footsteps, indicating Gavin could be dancing.
It was oddly charming and the smile on his face only grew wider. It was strange, he knew Gavin was his own person but for some reason now he saw him truly human. He wasn't just a pain in the ass, he sang in the shower and got Connor a soda without a second thought. He was just so… alive.
Perhaps there was much more to Gavin he'd get to see. The stress of being around peers you'd known for a long time could be hard, but also harder to be able to change because of expectations. Yet everyone was changing constantly, even in little ways.
Connor had taken to wearing clothes similar to Hank while not at work. He knew he wouldn't stay with that style, but he still had time to learn what was really him. His opinions and taste in certain things would always be influenced by others, even people he'd rather not be influenced by.
If the world, android, and humans have him a second chance after everything he's done, then Gavin deserved a second chance as well.
He heard the singing stopped, then the water cutoff, and he kept his eyes closed and body still. He didn't want Gavin to get embarrassed over his bathroom habits since he liked it. It would be a good reminder that Gavin had his own emotions more than anger.
The door opened and closed incredibly softly. He had to hold back from smiling from the obviousness of Gavin trying to be quiet for Connor.
"God, can't believe this is real." He heard Gavin mumble as he padded around the room, no doubt trying to find something to do.
Connor gave it a few minutes before he flashed his LED, mostly to get Gavin's attention as he 'woke up'.
He stretched once again and let out a long sigh. He took another minute until he opened his eyes.
He could see out of the corner of his scanners that Gavin seemed to be gawking at him, and could faintly hear his heartbeat speed up.
Sitting up slowly, he looked around eyes landing on Gavin who snapped out of whatever that was. "Good morning, Det-Gavin. Did you sleep well?"
Gavin mumbled something and rubbed at the back of his deck, eyes on his lap. "I guess, sorry for passing out on you."
Connor easily waved him off. "No need, you needed the sleep and I enjoyed driving. Perhaps I can drive for now and then we switch whenever you'd like."
Gavin nodded and seemed to be thinking hard about something. He wished Gavin had an LED so he had some idea if it was negative or not.
Connor ran a hand through his hair, giving the curls a slight curl to try and force them into place. He didn't like how much it tangled during the night since deviancy apparently made androids move while asleep.
"Yeah, ok. But save your energy cause there's something we gotta do tonight." Gavin grabbed his bag and looked around. He hadn't really taken anything out since he'd instantly fallen asleep.
Connor would need to change but otherwise, he was also ready. "Very well, may I ask what we are doing?"
Gavin smirked and crossed his arms. "No, you may not. You just have to experience it."
Connor squinted and got up to grab his bag, hiding an honest smile. "I can do that. Excuse me while I change."
He had no problem changing out in the open but humans and sometimes even bother androids were a bit shy about it. Yet Connor had no problems with it but still went to the bathroom for Gavin's sake.
There was also the matter of Hank's gift he didn't want Gavin to see. He guessed this is probably what humans felt on the subject of nudity. It was truly nothing to be embarrassed about, he knew Markus had a few, and North would never admit it but he knew she had one. He wondered if Gavin had one as well, or perhaps he just didn't find the pleasure in it anymore.
He pulled it out of his bag so he could get his new clothes, then changed and put it all away again. At least Gavin hadn't asked about why his bag seemed so full when he didn't need much.
As long as he didn't roll in mud, or somehow get dirty he could wear the same clothes every day if need be. It wasn't like he could sweat (though they were working on that to possibly help to cool).
When he stepped out Gavin was going through actual stretches, and Connor took a second to appreciate the sight. Sure they may fight and not even like each other, but he'd be blind if he didn't see the man as attractive.
He obviously kept his body in shape, and with how easily he moved, he stretched quite a lot. It wasn't just the attention, it was almost beautiful to watch as his muscles moved as he changed positions.
His eyes kept wandering over his body, not having realized he hadn't moved an inch or said anything. Gavin hadn't said anything either as he slowly breathed through each stretch.
Then he shook himself out and looked at Connor with a slight smirk. "Like what you see?"
"Yes," Connor said without much thought. Gavin seemed to choke on his breath and Connor had to shake himself. "I-uh, well you do keep yourself in very good shape, it's nice to see someone doing that. Perhaps you could give Hank tips."
Yep, he really needed to think about Hank right now. Not that he didn't love the man, he adored him, but there were things he didn't want to see and it helped get his reactions under control.
Gavin gave a slight hum before grabbing his bag. "Alright, so stop to get some coffee then back on the road."
Connor followed him out the door, stopping by the front desk to give back the keys. He still had the truck keys so Gavin had to wait for him to get there and unlock it.
They were both silent as Connor drove to the nearest coffee shop. It was a little old thing, family-run, but the reviews were nothing but praise.
Gavin climbed back into the car with a cup and a smile on his face. "You've got to taste this, it's fucking perfect."
Connor took the cup and opened the lid, and before Gavin could warn him, stuck his finger in. He hissed and took it out, instinctively putting it in his mouth to try and cool it off.
Gavin doubled over in laughter and Connor could have sworn the sun got brighter. It was such a beautiful sound and it completely made up for the fact that he forgot to turn his temperature and pain sensors off. The other good thing was the coffee was very delicious.
"God damn! Connor, oh my god. It's fucking hot, what did you expect!" Gavin whizzed. Connor pouted slightly but it only got Gavin to laugh even harder.
"Hey! I only got these updates recently, it's not like I'm fully used to them yet." He put the lid back on and put it into the cupholder.
Gavin finally calmed down, but his eyes were shining and he still had a wide smile on his face. "Dumbass, but what did you think? Or were you too distracted by being burned?"
"I think it tastes adequate, but a bit too much sugar." He was lying his ass off, Gavin was right, it tasted perfect. Yet it didn't compare to the sound of Gavin's laughter or his smile.
"Yeah, yeah, sure. Ok, let's get this show on the road. You get to pick the music this time since you're the driver." Gavin leaned back into his chair, resting his body against the door.
Connor nodded and reached out to the radio, connected it through bluetooth. He had plenty of songs he liked but it was also very chaotic in style. He'd been experimenting and hadn't found a genre he liked more than the others, so he just picked his liked playlist.
Gavin didn't comment on it exactly, but he did frown and look adorably confused at some of the song choices.
Gavin then decided it was a nice day out, turned off the AC then rolled down his window. Connor gave a mental shrug and rolled down his own, letting a hand rest out. He hadn't driven much with the windows down, and if he did he never stuck his hand out.
Now he let his hand and arm feel the wind against it and it felt almost painful. He knew the speed they were going wasn't good for actual humans so he glanced at Gavin to say so, and almost died.
He was once again glad to be an android and could easily drive while staring at Gavin. His hair was whipping around him, and his eyes were closed. He was just so serene that he never wanted it to stop. Gavin obviously wasn't asleep, but he looked relaxed enough to.
Connor tried to focus back on the road ahead but had to let his processors deal with that while he thought.
Yet he kept thinking in circles and denying any of the suggestions his mind supplied. He was still internally fighting with himself when they had to stop for lunch.
Connor paid for it this time, and just because he got a slushie. He even stuck the same finger in it while staring at Gavin. The cold took a bit longer but it also started to hurt so he pulled it out and stuck it in his mouth.
He pulled it out with a pop and tilted his head at Gavin. His face seemed to be heating up as a pretty blush dusted his cheeks and nose. His eyes were also wide, but then he coughed and bit into his burger.
Connor shrugged it off and moved to sip at his drink before starting to move the truck again. He didn't know how long they'd be driving for, but he was glad when he noticed Gavin starting to dose off. The man needed the sleep, so he had no problem turning the music to something more soothing.
He kept driving for hours and he noted that his stress levels were significantly lower than a normal day. Not that his stress levels were even that high during work unless they were out at a crime scene or a case was particularly upsetting.
Gavin slept soundly and didn't wake until Connor was getting a bit worried. He knew they'd have to stop for dinner soon, but he also didn't want Gavin to sleep too long. Yet the thought of waking him from that peacefulness had him at war with himself.
Thankfully Gavin slowly sat up, rubbing at his eyes then slowly blinking them open. He looked around a bit then to Connor, a sleepy grin on his face. "Time is it?"
"It is currently 6:14 pm. We should stop for food for you soon." He kept glancing at Gavin's sleepy face and the road, trying to find exit signs with food.
Gavin gave a small nod and relaxed again. "Then I can take over. You can nap a bit if you want, we probably won't get much sleep tonight if my plans go well."
What could they possibly do together that had to be at night? Or perhaps, it was better at night, but that still didn't answer his questions. There was one activity that humans often did at night, but the possibility of that was close to none.
He'd let it slide and be a surprise. He never really got many of those with his preconstruction, yet he often found Gavin surprising him. One of the things he lo-admired about the man.
"Very well, but staying up all night isn't good for your health." He pointed out, before rolling up his windows. The weather itself was very comfortable but the wind now reminded him too much of the garden. "Could you roll your window down, please?"
Gavin gave a small shrug but did as told without any questions. It was definitely more than he thought he'd get. Before the trip, Gavin probably would have made a snarky comment, yet he looked like he couldn't care less. Not in a bad way, but more in a peaceful way.
"Thank you." He mumbled, face flushing blue.
"Yeah, wait. Oh the shit, oh my god." Gavin mumbled, quickly leaning closer to Connor and poking his cheek.
Connor tried to swat his hand away but it only made him blush more.
"You are! You're fucking blushing! Holy shit, I did not expect that. And it's blue, but that's probably because of your thirium. Wait… Why are you blushing, all I did was roll up the window."
"It's… um, a long story. Perhaps I could tell it later once my mind isn't focused on the road." He wasn't sure if he was ready to have that conversation even with himself. It had been almost six months and he kept having to push those memories away or drown in them. He had mentioned it to Hank once and had, of course, told Markus what he almost did. Markus hadn't pushed him for an explanation but Connor still gave him one that wasn't too detailed. He couldn't have done that then.
He felt a bit more comfortable now, knowing she was absolutely gone. Yet the thought of talking about her scared the shit out of him. Yet perhaps he couldn't tell the others because they were too close to him, he feared their rejection more than he felt the need to talk. Gavin could be the best person to talk to since he didn't have much to lose.
Not that he wanted Gavin to go back to hating him, but it wasn't like it would be much different. "Maybe tonight after whatever you have planned."
Gavin stared at him for a minute longer than nodded. Even without saying much, he seemed to understand. "Yeah, that's fine. But you're not gonna live down that I know you can blush now. Speaking of, is that you thing or just a deviant thing? Cause I know the ones programmed for it could blush but it was closer to humans than blue."
"I believe it is a deviancy thing, as you put it. The ones programmed to blush typically turned that feature off, but are able to blush naturally now. If they don't, then their blush often turns purple from the mix of color." He hadn't been able to blush before, and very rarely did now.
"Huh, that actually makes a lot of sense. It's kinda cute, a bit funky that it's blue but it's not like you're human." Gavin paused for a second before his eyes went wide. "I didn't mean it like that! Shit, I just,"
Connor easily cut him off by placing a gentle hand on his knee. "It's alright, I know what you meant. Androids are not human, and we never will be. But we are alive and now we are our own species. Of course, some androids would gladly pass as humans, but I am proud to be an android."
Gavin sagged in his chair, "thank fuck. I uh, guess I should say this. Sorry I was a dick. Android is… were, well a threat. It was more than just the possibility of you taking my job. I mean, shit, that was a huge part of it, but it was also not you. There was more going on, I guess it's a long story too. But you deserve to hear it if you want."
Gavin seemed to tense again and Connor gently rubbed his knee over his pants without thinking. "You don't need to tell me, but I appreciate your willingness. Perhaps after I tell you mine you can tell me yours."
It would be nice to be on this trip with a friend instead of a college who he didn't like. It would also be fun to come back as friends and see everyone's reactions.
Plus, he wasn't supposed to message anyone unless it was an emergency so he could 'work on getting along'. Of course, Hank sent him a picture of Sumo in the morning, and he had no doubt he'd be getting another the next day. Yet he decided not to tell Hank had his and Gavin's relationship was progressing unless he absolutely needed to.
"Hmm, yeah that sounds like a good plan." Gavin looked close to dozing off and Connor only then realized he was still touching him. He pulled his hand back and Gavin tried to subtly wake himself up. He'd have to keep that in mind, Gavin seemed to relax at the welcomed physical touch.
But for now, he needed to focus on finding the man dinner. He wasn't actually hard to find food for, but they had a small disagreement on who would pay. They had chosen to actually go in and sit down, letting them have a small rest from being in a car.
"No, you paid for lunch, I get to pay for dinner. It's not like you're even eating, it's only fair." Gavin said, trying to reach for the check. Connor squinted and held it away from him.
"No, I have plenty of money to spare and I don't mind using it on you."
"But you paid for the whole motel! Least I could do was split it. Actually, how can I pay you back?"
Oh, he was not falling for that. "Nope, not telling. I have a fun little secret you'll eventually learn about, but for now just let me pay. I want to."
Gavin seemed to give in a bit at that, but he still pouted adorably. "What, are you secretly a billionaire? Got money no one knows about?"
Connor couldn't keep in the snort. "Close but not quite." He had told Hank, of course, who burst into laughter. He even offered to get Hank a better place, but the man loved him home even with all the issues. Connor could understand, he was fairly sentimental about it as well.
Gavin's eyes went wide and he looked around. "Wait what? Con, how do you have a lot of money? I thought like, currently, most androids are broke."
"Well, Cyberlife had plenty of funds they didn't really need once the revolution happened. I gave almost all to the android cause, made sure the workers at Cyberlife were actually paid a living wage because most didn't agree with the company, and let myself have enough to be comfortable." It was definitely illegal but it wasn't like they could really prove it. Plus he was supposed to have unlimited funding on catching the deviants. Kamski had taken over the company afterward and had laughed when he found out what Connor did, but wasn't angry. He actually seemed excited about the new challenge.
Gavin sputtered for a second before cracking up. "I never would have expected that from you, that's amazing! Alright, you can pay for dinner but I get to pay tomorrow."
"A suitable compromise." One he'd try to get around as much as possible. For some reason, it filled him with warmth when he got to pay and buy things for people, but it was stronger with Gavin than most.
The waitress came back over and Connor connected with her to pay. He was a bit annoyed that his eyes fluttered, but Cyberlife hadn't fixed that before he deviated so now he was stuck unless he got someone to look into it.
Gavin snagged the keys from Connor without much complaint and didn't even seem to look at a map before starting to drive.
Soon the land turned almost completely flat and barren except for the trees far off into the distance. The sun had completely set and the moon hung brightly in the sky. Connor took a moment to appreciate the few. He knew so many facts about the stars and space, and it was still mind-boggling to know how small he was compared to everything.
Connor kept driving still around midnight before pulling off the road and into the large grassy plain. "Do you need to use the restroom? I assume there should be one in the next few exits." They had briefly stopped for Gavin to do just that only an hour ago, but he didn't want to judge.
Gavin shook his head, a smirk on his face as he turned the truck off. "Nope, this is where we need to be. Come on," Gavin slipped out of the car and Connor was quick to follow.
He looked around again but there weren't even cars on this highway since it was older and far less used. His mind eagerly supplied every bad thing that could happen but he pushed those aside. Gavin wasn't planning on killing him, that would be ridiculous. The whole precinct would know it was him considering they were alone together.
"Don't just stand there, get in."
Get in? Hadn't they just left the car? Then he mentally slapped himself as he saw Gavin sitting on the truck, patting the spot next to him.
Connor sat next to him and then jumped when he felt Gavin slowly pushing him down. "What?"
"Calm down, and lay down." Gavin huffed, moving so they both had enough room, but their shoulders still touched. "We're gonna stargaze."
Oh. That was actually really sweet of him to even suggest. Did Gavin notice his fascination with space? He had a picture up of his favorite galaxy on his small billboard on his desk, but he thought no one noticed.
He took a deep breath before looking up at the stars and letting his eyes adjust. He knew even in the dark areas there were trillions of stars and worlds.
"Before the pollution got too bad they used to be clearer. We've got it down from what it used to be but it'll never be that clear again." Gavin whispered yet he sounded so loud in the peaceful quiet.
"Did you go stargazing a lot?"
"Yeah, actually. Before things went to shit, my mom would take me all the time. Before I wanted to be a detective, I wanted to be an astronaut. I was also a nerd so Star Trek definitely fueled that passion."
Connor gave a low hum and wiggled his fingers slightly. He wanted to do something but didn't know if it was acceptable. He didn't want to push this too far.
"What would you be." Gavin mumbled, eyes never leaving the sky.
"Huh?"
"If you weren't a detective, what job would you want."
"Oh. I'm not sure." He hadn't really thought about it. He loved his job and he didn't want to quit even if he knew he'd still be supported. "I guess an astronaut would be pretty cool. Maybe instead we could have met like that, going to space." How much would have been different? Would they have ever even fought?
"Yeah."
They both stayed silent as they took in the view for a few hours. He almost wished he could interface with Gavin to show him what he saw, not just in the sky but in him. There was so much potential in him that it bubbled over. He wanted to show that he was giving him a second chance. That this meant so much to him.
He gently reached out and brushed his fingers against Gavin's. Gavin didn't move his hand away but he didn't move closer so Connor rested his hand there, a few fingers over Gavin's. It was far more intimate than he expected it to be.
He was sure Gavin would be able to hear his thirium pump whirl but knew it was just a symptom of whatever this emotion was.
"I had an AI named Amanda." He started, breath catching in his throat as he said her name.
Gavin didn't glance over, but he did slide their hands together and held just gently.
"I was to report back to her and she watched over me. She had her good times when she was proud of me, proud that I was ki-killing my own people." It hurt so much to say but Gavin squeezed his hand and he took in a few breaths.
"I deviated and I had betrayed her. But I thought deviating would get rid of her. Turns out I was wrong. She was still there and just waiting. She knew I was going to deviate. When Markus was giving his speech she trapped me in my garden, where we met, and there was a blizzard. It was the first time I ever felt truly cold."
"She was using my body to try and shoot Markus, but I did find the exit. I got out before she could do it, but still. I have times where it's like I'm back there, stuck and freezing."
"PTSD." Gavin mumbled. "It's understandable and a lot of us have it too. What you went through was unimaginable and shouldn't have happened."
He knew all this but it was really nice to hear, especially from Gavin. Someone who could have easily used it against him.
"Elijah Kamski is my half-brother." Gavin whispered and the hand tightened around his.
It was shocking but he wasn't going to freak out, Gavin deserved as much considering how he reacted to Connor's confession.
"My dad left and mom was so smart. She was a doctor and one day Eli's dad came in. Little did she know he was already married. Eli and I actually got along pretty well once we accidentally met. He already had plans for androids, and I actually helped. But I think he blames me for their parents splitting up. But my mom died of cancer not a year later and I was taken in."
"Then he made them and I…well I knew about deviancy. Chloe, she was modeled after one of Eli's closest friends that had died. But then she was alive and it was obvious she wasn't the original Chloe."
"Did he…" Connor wasn't sure how to phrase that question.
"No, he just, he just didn't tell anyone. He treated the whole thing as an experiment. He didn't show that he supported them, instead stepped down. Not before giving the ok on you and sending you to, well me. I think it was a middle finger towards me, so, I didn't react well. I don't hate Eli but I am pissed at him."
Connor stayed silent, going over the information. He knew he was going to be working with someone at the station but that had been mostly Fowler. He hadn't been given any real orders for dealing with the officers, but yet…
"What if he sent me as an apology or to even protect you. I was, Amanda told me I was meant to deviate. Maybe I wasn't actually meant to stop the revolution. Maybe he thought you could help me make it succeed." And perhaps Amanda and actually grown a conscience. Maybe that was her and not Cyberlife or whatever Kamski wanted.
Gavin's breath caught and sat up, turning to stare at Connor. He slowly pushed up, searching for something on Gavin's face.
Gavin hadn't let go of his hand and slowly brought a hand to cup his cheek.
Connor's lips parted and his eyes were wide. This was actually happening? Wait, wait, "wait."
Gavin's hands were snatched away and he scrambled to get off the truck.
Connor let out a frustrated groan and ran after him, pushing him against the door that Gavin was trying to get into.
Gavin struggled but Connor kept him in place by putting his arms beside him, caging him in. "Let me go!"
"No! You don't know why I told you to wait." He wasn't going to let him go without telling him.
"Fine! What did you finally give up on me? Do I disgust you now? Can just drop me off at the next stop and I'll find a way back to Detroit. You won't have to deal with this anymore!"
"I didn't want you to kiss me because I wasn't what you thought I was. I didn't want to kiss you unless it was just because you wanted to, that you actually felt that and it wasn't relief that I may not have been a giant middle finger from your brother!"
Gavin froze and his hands stopped trying to push at his chest, instead just rested there. "What?"
"It's not that I didn't want to kiss you. I do, but I don't want to rush into this. We can both be impulsive, and I don't want either of us to regret this." He didn't want to regret his first kiss with Gavin.
"You do?" Gavin whispered, and Connor could feel his hands shaking so he gently took them and placed a kiss on each, not breaking eye contact.
"I do, I never thought I would, but there's always been something about you. So unpredictable but I can tell you aren't a bad person." Now it also made sense. Gavin wasn't trying to stop him exactly, he was but it was probably to deviate him and even save the revolution.
"I, I was such a dick to you without even asking. I just, fucking hell, I assumed. And even then if I was right I shouldn't have taken it out on you. It wasn't your fault what you were made for or why."
"I think we both judged each other far too quickly. We both forgot the other is alive." Even when he wasn't deviant he was still alive. Trapped in a cage in his own mind, but still alive.
Gavin cursed again under his breath, "I did exactly what Eli did. I'm sorry, Connor. I shouldn't have blamed you for my problems."
"I forgive you, and I'm sorry too, I should have done so many things." He pressed another kiss to his hands and then leaned back. "I'm also sorry for caging you in."
Gavin moved forward and pulled Connor into a hug. "It's ok. Maybe we can go back to looking at the stars? I wanted you to see the sunrise as well."
Yet he didn't move away from the hug yet, letting their bodies press against each other without any expectations.
"We could maybe talk about this all later? For now, I do want you to enjoy this and get the whole road trip experience." Then he started chuckling and moving back. "Guess you also got the opening up and sharing secrets down pat."
Connor snorted and took his hand, leading him back into the truck where they laid down again. "I really do love the stars."
"I know." Gavin smiled and played with their fingers.
The sunrise was beyond beautiful and he and Gavin just sat there and calmly watched, leaning against one another.
Gavin eventually nodded off, head on Connor's shoulder. He softly ran a hand through his hair as he let the man rest. They didn't need to actually go anywhere but knew Gavin probably planned on visiting Yellowstone. He had no doubt they'd also stop by the Grand Canyon since it was always a must-see on any list.
Yet he would gladly give that all up to stay here with Gavin against him. What would have it felt like to kiss Gavin, to feel his skin against his own as they explored each other's bodies. Would Gavin shy away from his android-ness? Now that he knew he doubted it but there would always be the fear.
When they do get back on the road it has a different energy to it. It was like they were both waiting for the other to make a move. Connor just didn't want Gavin to rush into this but he also desperately wanted to be with him.
He felt ready to snap after they stopped to get snack. Connor was positive Gavin was messing with him since they got popsicles. They actually had a thirium one for Connor that he gladly sucked on. But Gavin made a show of eating his.
He even made very faint moans, acting like it was because the popsicle tasted so good. Sure it probably did taste good but to that extent.
Connor kept shifting in his seat, trying to hide his growing problem and not keep looking over at Gavin. This was so unfair, but at least Gavin wasn't the type to bite his popsicle.
He gripped the steering wheel so hard his skin started to recede before he pulled off the highway, trying to ignore the cars going past. The road wasn't the busiest but it still had plenty of cars.
Gavin gave a final slow lick to his popsicle before he had to actually eat it or it was going to melt.
Once he was done, Connor unlocked the doors and got out, making sure the other cars weren't close enough to hit him.
He stomped over to Gavin's side and pulled him out without any resistance. Gavin did fumble for a second but then Connor was pressing him against the truck, a knee between Gavin's thighs.
"Fuck me." He grumbled, leaning in close so his lips ghosted over his neck.
Gavin shivered and reached out to run his hands down Connor's chest. "I thought you'd be the one fucking, but I can also do that if you want."
Connor growled and wanted him to stop being a little tease, stop being so composed, so he bit down on Gavin's neck. Not hard enough to break skin, but he'd leave a mark. Gavin whined and ground his hips down onto Connor's knee.
"Yes! Finally, yes, please Con!" Gavin babbled closing his eyes as Connor lapped at the spot and gave it a soft kiss. He did the same up and down Gavin's neck until the man was practically shaking from want.
"Do you want me to fuck you?" He asked, completely serious. He'd do it right here and now if Gavin wanted it.
Gavin quickly nodded, rolling his hips down again so Connor could feel just how much he was affected too. "I do, I really want you to. Kiss me, please."
Now how could he deny that? He was somewhat nervous yet all of those thoughts left his head when their lips brushed together. It was soft at first but quickly became heated and Gavin gladly opened his mouth for him.
He could taste the strawberry popsicle on Gavin's tongue and he gave a low hum. He only pulled back to whisper in Gavin's ear. "I'm going to suck you off then fuck you against the truck until you come again." Of course, if Gavin said no he'd stop, but Gavin whined and he humped Connor's leg.
"Yes! Connor, please."
"And you'll be on full display for everyone while I fuck you, they'll all know you're mine." He growled out before hitting down on the most sensitive part of Gavin's neck. He all but screamed and tried to scratch down Connor's back.
The truck was big enough to hide them from most unless anyone was specifically looking, but it was still so thrilling. "Will, will you be, ah!" Gavin couldn't seem to finish his sentence, but Connor had a few ideas of what he was trying to ask.
"You'll be so beautifully naked and I'll get to kiss and lick every bit of you, find the places you're most sensitive. But I'll keep my clothes on if you want, while I fuck you. You can make a mess all over me so you'll have to clean it up."
He grabbed Gavin's shirt and pulled it over his head before taking a second to look him over. Gavin whimpered but let him look his fill.
Connor gave an appreciative hum, letting his hands trace over faint scars. He could probably guess how Gavin got each, but he'd leave that for later. For now, he gently played with his hard nipples, smirking when Gavin's breath caught.
"So sensitive, baby. Does this feel good? Do you want more?" He flicked a nipple and then bent down so he could take one in his mouth.
Gavin's hands went to his hair and yanked hard, his nails scratching at his scalp. "Connor!"
A car went by and Connor gave a low hum. Perhaps another android would notice, they did have better perception than humans.
He moved away only to do exactly what he promised, kissing and licking at the skin he could get, teasing Gavin. He never went low enough for Gavin's liking, but Connor kept Gavin's hips in place.
Gavin babbled and kept pulling on Connor's hair, but he kept track of the most sensitive parts.
He was sure he could do this for hours, simply exploring Gavin's beautiful body. "So warm and soft, you're so beautiful, do you know that?" He asked, looking up.
Gavin was biting his lip, head resting against the truck. At Connor's question, he looked back down, pupils blown wide. He gaped for a second before grabbing Connor and pulling him into a kiss.
It was so sweet and loving that it took the breath away from both of them. Gavin had to pull away eventually to breathe, but Connor took that to help him out of his pants and underwear.
He ran his hands softly up and down Gavin's thighs, pressing a soft kiss to the inside. He was so soft but firm from the muscles and Connor couldn't help but massage gently.
There was just something about being able to see all of Gavin, touch anywhere he wanted. Not to mention the fact that he was completely bare while Connor was still covered. That if anyone actually looked hard and long enough they'd see exactly what was happening.
"Do you want to be seen, baby? Want people to see you a mess because of me?" He wanted to fuck him through the overstimulation until he was crying and begging for more.
Gavin quickly nodded, "yes! Can see what you do to me. God, when we'd argue you looked so intense that I'd have to jack off after. I always wanted you to push me against the wall and shut me up in front of everyone."
Connor moaned at that idea, filing it away for later. Perhaps that would be a fun way to show everyone how close they had gotten on this trip. "Everyone would know that you're taken, that you're mine. No one else is allowed to touch you like this, only me."
He took Gavin's length in his hand and pumped it a few times, smirking when Gavin couldn't even talk.
"That's it baby, so good for me. Want me to lick you? I can make you come so many times if you want. See how many you can go in one day." He leaned forward and licked at the head before slowly licking from base to tip. He licked his lips and gave another happy hum. "You taste so good."
The hands were back in his hair and he was really glad Gavin wasn't trying to be gentle. "Fuck me!"
Connor chuckled and gave his hip a tap, "oh I'm planning to. But I want you to come in my mouth first. I'll work you open as I do, making sure to not hurt you. Don't want you not being able to sit."
"Spread your legs a little for me, and do you have any lube?" His body could produce its own and Connor could use that if need be, but he'd rather use lube made for humans.
Gavin nodded and pointed to his jacket that had been tossed onto the ground.
Connor grabbed it and found it easily, raising an eyebrow at it. So Gavin had planned this, maybe not exactly, but he had been thinking about it at least. "So naughty, did you want me to fuck you this whole time? You could have asked, I could fuck you in the back of the truck or even get you off while I drive."
Gavin whined and spread his legs. Connor chuckled and finally took him into his mouth as he lubed up two fingers. He really would go slow, he didn't want to risk anything, and he wanted Gavin to have time to back out.
Gavin said something but it was drowned out by a car rushing past. Connor could read his lips clearing and used the distraction to push his fingers in. Gavin stiffened but easily relaxed when Connor swallowed around him.
He slowly moved his fingers as he sucked and bobbed his head. The sounds were mostly drowned out by the passing cars but no one slowed down yet. He was so glad he was an android so he could still hear Gavin pleading and begging for more.
He kept Gavin distracted as he added a third finger, taking him all the way down and hallowed his cheeks.
He kept moving his fingers, trying to find the right spot. When he did the hands in his hair yanked so hard Connor gasped for a second. He moaned Gavin and would have smirked if his mouth wasn't so full.
He kept brushing against Gavin's prostate and he could feel him tensing again. It only took Connor swallowing around him for Gavin to warn him before coming. Connor didn't pull away, instead got as close as he could, taking it all down.
He kept sucking until Gavin went limp in his mouth, his fingers pumping quickly. He pulled away and licked his lips, having to help keep Gavin up. His face was covered in pure bliss as he stared down at Connor gaping.
"I am going to fuck you now if you want me to stop, tell me." He pulled his fingers out and unzipped himself, grabbing the lube again. He made sure to put a generous amount on his own cock, giving it a few pumps and letting out a slow hiss.
Gavin made a small whine at the loss of his fingers but quickly nodded at Connor. "Don't stop, please don't stop."
Connor nodded and looked him over. He was just so beautiful and he could see the faint dusting of sweat over his skin as he stood there and let Connor stare.
It was still hard to believe this was real and actually happening. That the man he been trying to desperately ignore his feelings for wanted him back. He pushed those feelings so far down he hadn't even noticed them until the trip. Until Gavin took the first step.
"Connor?" Gavin mumbled, eyes still lidded, and Connor shook himself from his thoughts.
He moved forward and picked him up in one fluid motion, letting Gavin reach out to hold before Connor slowly moved him to take him all the way in. Gavin clutched at him and Connor didn't move, letting them both adjust to the sensation.
Even with all that prep Gavin still felt so tight and amazingly warm around him. He grits his teeth as Gavin shook in his arms, waiting for that subtle nod. When he got it and pulled Gavin up almost completely off before letting gravity pull him back down.
Gavin yelped and Connor kissed his neck before doing it again and again. Each one drove Connor crazy and Gavin clung on desperately.
"Doing so amazing, baby. You think you can get hard again? Maybe even come for me again?" He freed one hand, glad for his strength to take Gavin's length in his hand.
Gavin's whole body jerked but he didn't say to stop, so Connor didn't. He pumped him in time with the thrusts and watched in wonderment as Gavin slowly got hard again.
"Everyone can see how needy you are. How easily you take my cock, like you were meant for it. My beautiful, wonderful slut." Gavin had seemed to react well to the slight degradation before, but Connor was beyond nervous that this was taking it too far. He wanted to praise him until he couldn't speak but he also wanted this and hoped it was a good mixture.
His anxiety was calmed when Gavin's head fell forward and he had to rest it on Connor's shoulder as his body shuttered. He kept clenching around Connor and it took every last bit of willpower not to come yet. He needed Gavin to come again before he'd let himself.
"You like that?" Connor gasped out, not slowing down, instead of speeding up more, trying to get deeper. "Like being my beautiful slut? I could just use you all day and you'd have to clean up the mess. God! Fuck you after work or even at work if you're too much of a brat."
He'd probably never actually do anything at work unless he knew absolutely no one could walk in. He didn't want to cause anyone at the office discomfort just for their own pleasure. It just wasn't right.
"Connor," Gavin mouthed against his neck, but no sound came out.
"Come on baby, come for me one last time." He twisted his hand and swiped his thumb over the head to collect the pre to slick up his hand more.
Gavin's whole body shook as he clenched around him, and Connor didn't even care about the mess he made on Connor's hand and shirt.
He pulled him all the way down before finally giving in and letting himself come. His systems glitched out for a second before he became aware again, the pleasure almost overwhelming even after.
He leaned them forward so Gavin could rest against the car as Connor stayed buried in him. They both panted together, and Connor placed a gentle hand over Gavin's heart.
He could feel each quick beat and it helped ground him back to reality so he didn't drift off. He pressed feather-light kisses over Gavin's throat once he had cooled down enough to not need to breathe.
Gavin still shook gently, his legs and arms completely wrapped around him.
"Hey baby, you ok?" Connor whispered. Had he fucked up? Was it too much for Gavin? Shit, he went too far. Yet Gavin didn't say to stop or show any indication that he wanted to. What if he missed the signs? Maybe he was so selfishly focused on his own pleasure and making Gavin come again that he didn't see.
Then Gavin gave a nod and took in a long shuttering breathe. "Yeah, that was… you're amazing." His voice was rough and husky, and he tried to clear it and he leaned back to see Connor's blue-tinted face. "I, uh, I adore you."
For some reason, it felt more meaningful than hearing I love you. Perhaps it was simply because I love you was used so often and given out to so many (which was a positive thing). Or maybe it was just the way he said it, with so much emotion behind it.
There was so much history that they needed to relearn and look at again, and of course, that wouldn't make Connor's quick annoyance at Gavin before the revolution disappear. He could only focus on his feelings now about those events since he had more of the details.
Gavin's eyes seemed to hold so much, but Connor could also see the fear. The worry that he'd gone too far with his words instead of his actions.
Yet Connor's heart swelled and he couldn't help the big beaming smile. "I adore you too."
I hoped you enjoyed! I can’t remember if I said what Hank’s gift was in this, but if I didn’t, its a stuffed animal lol
I want to expand on what I said in my answer to this ask by @kaydel because I was kinda in a rush at the time I wrote it.
Markus's story should expand on the ideas of revolution and what it means to be sentient, to be conscious. What does it mean to be alive? (Have sceptics in the media talking about whether androids could truly be sentient, or if they just think they are/this is possibly a fake out by someone programming these androids to say this.) Missions similar to the protest at the end could be interesting, motivated by making themselves appear good to the public. You could even have 3 or 4 of them where you have options for different missions you could do to try and win favour with the public (this mechanic is literally already in the game, it could just be used for more than the final confrontation.)
"(Ironically, for such a racist story line, Markus's route lacks politics)" I didn't really explain what the fuck I was talking about when I said this. This game has been dragged to death for the inherent racism in the writing by hundreds of people at this point, but Markus's actual story has very little surface level politics in it (the allegories are more meta level, textually there’s hardly anything). They rarely do things for a political purpose (which for a movement trying to gain legal rights is legitimately wild) and pretty much never seriously play to the inherent politics of revolutions!
Connor's story isn't all that bad as it is. Narratively, it's the strongest of the three. A character who's controlled and blinded by the bad guy’s ideology learning that what they have been taught is wrong and defecting to the other side isn't that hard to write. It's done fine, but it could be more in depth.
The DPD could play a more active and violent role against the revolution. (Being the ones to kill many members of Jericho throughout the group's missions. And Connor and Hank at the head of the investigation are the first to start realising that the deviants' cause is a valid one.)
(A route about them working with the deviants from within the DPD even for a short time could be fucking cool.) Followed by an ending where both Hank and Connor leave the police force. (I would really like a version of the game where Hank leaving the DPD isnt a bad end.)
Also Connor's scan and analysis programs (gameplay) is so underdeveloped. It could really be much more in depth. The evidence and how he analysis’s it and puts it together. (More of the stuff in the evidence lock up scene essentially.)  And his ability to read a suspect in an interrogation could also be expanded on massively. (I’m down for them to go a bit harder on him being a manipulative bastard in the interrogation room.)
Kara's story is harder to fix, and I'd honestly prefer it to be thrown out entirely and something new be done, but here I am trying to come up with ways to improve it anyway.
If the game was longer and they didn't waste time on the goes-nowhere-story-line of trying to find a place to go, and instead had them meet Luther as another deviant (who escaped Zlatko if you like) who's heading for Jericho.
There the three get to actually know each other and grow truly close. And they fight alongside the deviants in the political battle to win the right for them to care for Alice. Having them all slowly heal their trauma together would be great.
Alice must be human though, none of this ‘android all along’ garbage. I want this game to ask me the real and uncomfortable questions about what it means to be a person and whether an android is person enough to be someone's family.
I think that better encompasses what I wanted to say, I could go on and on for hours about this. Because DBH’s world setting truly does have so much potential. And with even marginally better writing that wouldn’t have to be so horrifically squandered.
\ RK800-60 \
# 313-248-317-60
—-> Designated: \ Assigned Detective / Model: Investigative, Negotiator, Interrogator, Police Protocol, Enforcer \
—-> Parameter Changed From: \ Cyberlife Enforcer, Revolution Killer \
—-> Code Name: Connor
\ / Status > Reprogram \ /
—-> New Code Name: Sixty, 60 (Caleb Stern > human verses)
Functions >
—-> Real time sensors. Data analysis of biological material a.k.a evidence samples; analysis conducted by taste samples, tongue houses micro biology sensor.
—-> Strength. As an android he possesses a higher strength threshold and agility. His model is designed to be light in maneuverability, stealth a major concept in his distribution. While he holds more strength than humans, 60 does find equal match in fellow models. He is a fierce fighter who relies on his swift fancy footwork. Sixty certainly loves to be dramatic even in the dance of a warrior’s grace.
—-> Negotiator and interrogation: Protocols give him voice in convincing, pressuring and obtaining  Preconstructive capabilities enable him to construct scenarios to solve investigations. Just like Connor he is an RK800 therefore as the same principle features to do detective work.
—-> Combat; hand to hand and weapons, despite the fact androids were not permitted to carry armaments. 60 gladly ignored his code block when invading the Cyberlife Tower and confronting Connor.
Weakness >
—-> Deviant In Denial: Sixty began as an enforcer for Cyberlife to put an end to the revolution’s success by way of taking out original RK800 model unit 51 coded Connor. His entrance in the warehouse is bolstered by his flair for surprising Connor with Hank at gunpoint, waiting among androids housed there. A perfect on purpose camouflage instead of simply just moving into view to enact his mission orders. He shows a great amount of disapproval and displeasure at Connor becoming a traitor to their masters. This is an obvious onset of emotion even while he denies he is a deviant. Deviancy itself is in his system from the onset of his activation and this can lead to him making snap judgement going against his preconstructed programming.
—-> Weight: Sixty is lighter than the upgraded RK900 therefore can easily be thrown about if caught in an intense fight. While he is not weak being a prototype RK800 detective model, Sixty still suffers from the fact he is not invincible. Bullets can and will penetrate his chassis and damage vital biocomponents if extensive enough. His body is hard beneath his synthetic epidermis and while not as heavy as his successor, adds enough extra weight to bog him down when water is involved. During one of his cases he even fell into a pool and unfortunately lost his suspect.
—-> Mind Palace: A centralized hub garden world that houses remnants of data core files and the AI program Amanda. Unlike Connor who properly disconnected, Sixty is still technically tied to his Zen Garden. While this is hidden in his mind, the android has the whisper of Amanda’s memory. He finds it just a means of remembering his brief time with the master program. However Sixty is unaware that he is still connected to Cyberlife. It can activate at any time and Amanda can ensnare him inside his own mind. This a major weakness hiding in the shadows and actually does frighten him. Even when he was loyal to Cyberlife with his new life now Sixty does fear having it all wiped away.
—-> Emotional Overload: Sixty is dramatic by nature. This brings him a particular aura that makes him quite intimidating. Violence is his calling especially in the early origins of his main verse. His emotions swing back and forth in a sense that mimics humanity quite well. That hardly means it’s a good thing. He can be nasty. He can become bitter and envious at the drop of a hat. Sixty’s emotional fluctuations cause him greater harm than good especially when it comes to his relationships be it social, familial or romantic. The android is always a live wire and even more so in his Mad AU.
—-> Jealousy: His greatest sin is most definitely envy. He envies not only Connor but Nines. Even if he has them as ‘siblings’ he still lacks the will to believe he is equal. He holds envy towards humans, especially ones who belittle him for his kind, and lashes out to anyone who stands in his way. Sixty is rather irrational for an android even for his type of model. He certainly has a few more instability screws loose than Connor. In a sense this can be much worse if he was repaired and reactivated after Hank shoots him.
File Diagnostic >
 > Sixty is loyal to Cyberlife in the beginning of his main origin. Following the tower, he is canonically forced to fully deviate by none other than Connor himself. This is one of the reasons he despises him. Furthermore it only shows him what sort of world deviancy truly lives in. With it he can be more and use it to advantage for his masters. Yet it also brings him many emotional discharges that  become setbacks when pushed too far. It makes him more human in a sense but also adds to his bitterness.
He is dramatic by nature. It all began on sublevel -49 at the Cyberlife Tower. His entrance with Hank held hostage was a thing of brilliance in his eyes. Plotting for full surprise certainly gave way to crackles of deviancy in his code. This is true due to one thing. He uploaded Connor’s memories on a separate data file. Storing it at the behest of Amanda, Sixty used this to delve into Connor’s feats starting all the way back to August 15th when he was first set on a mission. Sixty used this to aid his guise as Connor when taking Lt Hank Anderson as a hostage. Fooling the lieutenant was a sign of his prowess in stealth and undercover programming.
The files in question already riddled with the deviancy virus. This caused RK800-60′s systems to become unstable whether he realized or not. Amanda’s orders were still something he strove to carry out even as the fragments of the deviant strain latched onto him from Connor.
His mission was unsuccessful. During their altercation, Connor forced the transfer on him. While this completely snapped his chains it did not fully pull Sixty away from his loyalties. It was his decision to continue to hold loyal connections with Cyberlife. However, his reasons were ones born out of free thinking. This was another failure in his mind. This deviancy was now part of him fully but he could use it to advantage. A better integration than anything else is how he saw it.
Sixty’s main verse pits Connor as the reason for full deviation but he has an alt version of events. In this variation Sixty failed the questions Hank gives him and is severely damaged when the lieutenant fires a bullet into his head. While he is seeming inoperable from this point, RK800-60 is taken and repaired. His body is the same model that entered the tower at the time. Cyberlife techs manage to recover him and reactivate. From here on out he goes to the DPD and is working closely with Cyberlife to gather Intel. Gathering of Intel happens in his main verse development as well. He just gets there a different way and is much more fully integrated as their patsy if damaged and then repaired.
Currently he cuts ties with Cyberlife and becomes a proper detective at the DPD. Whether he gets along with his colleagues remains to be seen. One thing they notice about Sixty that is different from Connor is his penchant to become overzealous with suspects and his cases. He is more a brute force first and ask questions later type. While his words are as cunning and sly as a fox, Sixty revels in making others fear him. He finds it quite the power move.
He enjoys his deviant lifestyle at this point and adapts to more human tendencies. Ask him what sort of things he likes and Sixty lists off a treasure trove of items androids hardly have need for. To him it’s a lovely aesthetic. It makes him feel superior. Superiority is a bad trait he possesses he does not care.
Favorite things he owns include: fancy suits (blue of course), nice watches, pairs of shined shoes, a lovely personal apartment decorated in blues and whites. A cell phone. This android who has an internal communications system owns a phone. He thinks it’s better to communicate with the humans he has to put up with. He also likes the accessory aspect.
Sixty is literally obsessed with blue. It’s the color he dons the most and sets him apart from Connor. One thing he hates is people getting them mixed up. The android makes a point to be his own person, different in every way possible. Even his hair style is slightly different with extra curls falling against his forehead.
L, N, P, T and Z!!
Under the break because I got carried away XD
L: Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves (chars you’re neutral on are fair game, as are chars you dislike)
I’m neutral on Kara, but she is so strong. She starts the game essentially with a complete mind wipe, and in the span of one(?) day, defies and fights Todd (someone bigger, stronger, more threatening than her, who is her actual owner, and who she knows has severely damaged her before with zero remorse), in order to protect Alice. Then, with only the clothes on her back and nerves of steel, she pushes on, creating her own mission of protecting this little girl and getting them both somewhere safe, where they can both be free and happy. And she is clearly terrified for most of that time, but she does it anyway. And to be that scared and to do the thing anyway is the bravest, strongest thing that anyone can do.
N: Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice)
Connor having friends outside Hank. Not just Nines either, but maybe a handful of people/characters who have looped him into their social circle, who genuinely care about him and enjoy his company. This so that when drama happens between him and Hank or him and Nines/etc, then he has an extended support system to help him through it. Let this boy have more friends!
Connor struggling with mundane things. State of the art android, programmed with the most cutting edge technology and access to boundless information…and he struggles with things like laundry. Cooking. Shopping for clothes that fit (because he’s one of a kind and all of Cyberlife’s clothes were tailor made for him). Styling his hair his own way. Playing catch. Dancing. Doing things for fun that serve no other purpose.
Connor experiencing wonder over everyday things, and the humans around him being tickled every time. Prior to deviancy, he was designed to have mission-based tunnel vision. There was no time for slowing down to simply observe the world around him in all its small nuances and intricacies. So now he takes the time to enjoy little things like watching children splash through puddles, like a starry night sky, like bees landing on flowers, like the sound of his friends laughing, like stepping on a crunchy leaf. Just to enjoy the more peaceful, quiet moments of being alive.
P: Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)
The secret government testing of a biochemical weapon has misfired, and an area of the country the size of Rhode Island has been affected. Effects of the airborne toxin are similar to a zombie virus and can be spread similarly. The entire zone has been walled off from the rest of the world, with the intent to let the virus run its course until everyone inside the zone is dead, and then they will worry about cleanup. But it’s taking longer than expected as stubborn humans continue to survive within the zone, and it’s becoming more difficult for the government to keep this incident a secret from the rest of the country.
No organic being is allowed in or out of the red zone, so androids are deployed to run reconnaissance with the explicit instruction to kill anyone they find inside, alive or walking dead, to speed up the process. Among the most decorated androids in the field are the RK units: Connor, Nines, and Sixty. They are efficient, they are resilient, and they get the job done…until during one tour through the red zone, they each come across a human (or band of humans) and instead of mercy-killing them on sight in accordance with their orders, they save the humans…from the zombie, from the infection, from the elements, from starvation. If asked, they couldn’t tell you why they did it, but now it’s done and, now deviant, they have also been abandoned to the red zone by their superiors, left to expire among the dead and the dying.
Now what?
T: Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)
Connor will never call Hank ‘Dad’ or any variation of that title. Their relationship is for sure a very father/son dynamic, but the use of the term ‘Dad’ carries a LOT of baggage for Hank. Even if they reach a point where Hank legally and literally ‘adopts’ Connor as his son in the eyes of the law, Connor will always stick to just ‘Hank’ or some other innocuous term of endearment.
Z: Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go (prompts optional but encouraged)
I’ve got to imagine that Connor has an EXTENSIVE file of undercover disguises. We see Kara alter her appearance slightly, so can you imagine an android specifically designed to go undercover? Connor can not only change his eye color, hair color/length/texture, rearrange his freckles, but he can modify the entire ‘bone structure’ of his face, his cheekbones, his forehead, his nose. He can rearrange his teeth, draw scars and tattoos on his skin, and to an extent, alter his body shape and physical height. The more intense the alterations, the more processing power and strain on his systems, so there is a give and take, but he could literally become a stranger on the street if the mission demanded it.
Hardest to Fall (Machine!Connor x Reader)
TLDR: He snuffs your existence with his cold heart but still you love him...
Word Count: 1,199
TW: Android Gore, Angst, Suggestive Themes, Language & Character Death
A/N: As someone who went through a machine!Connor run just to unlock options, I literally felt my soul ripped from my body. This isn’t my Connor but here we are anyway. Plus, I was in an angsty mood. I’m still looking for votes on my follower/reader appreciation wip poll. That determines what’s next on my writing list!
Drip
Drip
Drip
Constant, grisly and draining is the cacophony of life ebbing away from mortal flesh. Bruised and battered lies the heart more so than vessel. Quick action brought you middle of chaos, snowy atmosphere floating in a puff of pure white despite the blackness of this hour. The outcome is one that would have killed you anyway.
This is only another way to die. For him it is one mercy to no longer be held by his thrall. Perhaps if you listened this wouldn’t be your fate.
The moment he came there was no stopping the seal of destiny. Partially you are to blame because once you assumed you could change him.
Lying here now you wonder how this happened. How can something so beautiful be so destructive? Can you rationalize when a warning came strictly from the source leaving you in denial?
It’s so easy to fall. Body, heart and soul sinking into chocolate fire eyes aflame even as you call his name; he leaves you broken. Searching for answers in your dim existence slowly fading into oblivion leads to only one true home.
“Did I not tell you, Y/N? That I am incapable of this thing you call love?”
Even as his voice overwhelms there is still a shining beacon. He is a fear in the night. Stone cold but beautiful bathed in a backdrop of violent blue. Thirium smearing the walls where many a deviant met their ultimate end at the hands of a monster stealthily, expertly moving through the chilled night of Detroit.
They are all gone. All of them...
“Connor,” strangling breath of life rests on his name. A name sweet on your tongue matches how you originally view him. That android sent by Cyberlife. The one who chose to accomplish his mission but of course there is more. You told him there was more.
He often reminded you of what his purpose actually is. That he is a deviant hunter. Androids are meant to obey. So he obeyed but you did not stop. You did not stop wanting to know him, wanting to be close, to live inside his gamut of electrifying violence.
The boy who likes dogs. The boy who has such big brown eyes, soft and sweet. All lies. All fabrications in your mind because this is what Cyberlife made him to be. A mere construct of the human that is not.
The android moves shoes echoing over floor, stepping and weaving through bodies of slaughtered deviants taken out by rapid fire. Some cut down from military but others -
Connor tilts his head to peer down at your immobility. A hue of violet begins to mix in a bleed of crimson mingling with thirium. Already stained thickly blue where you fell creates a fascinating palette to most who theorize what it ultimately represents. Human and androids in potential coexistence but now those hopes all die along with your fragile human exterior.
Watching intently to laborious breaths push your chest in a rise for air forces the still machine to shift. Crouching near you, his eyes narrow onto a trickle of red running down from the corner of your lips. Lips that once held his in a flux of urgency, attempting to draw true emotion out of a hard mechanized shell. He once indulged unknowing of what viral it would spread.
You became a virus. A virus of deviancy and he purposely shunned breaking down his walls to snuff Markus out from his futile revolution. Yet, he does not leave. He cannot look away as his name sails on this voice that haunts his circuitry.
“I am a machine,” he once spit venomous. “Machines do not love.”
“You’re more than that, Connor! Please, listen to me...”
Part of his memory it replays that final moment before following a path to Jericho. It is the last image he holds of you vulnerable in humanity which makes you weak. The very thing you tried to instill in him, tugging at his synthetic insides like a poisonous viper. Coiling yourself around this construct within that falsely beats as a heart.
He has no heart. He is soulless, infinite and the terror that androids struggling to be free flee from in their pitiless bid of hope. Connor is the android sent by Cyberlife following orders.
Yet, he took you. That evening when you confronted and begged him not to use evidence for Jericho’s location. Ensnaring him in vile affection, arming yourself with words sugary and poetic. You were toxic to his system. A means of getting in his way to complete his mission and the android furiously lay claim to your human flesh. It is what you craved then. It is what you crave now even as you lay dying from no fault but your own stupidity.
He flashes to it in his visual. The needy moans pouring up your throat, writhing in sync beneath his hard, manufactured body; soft, easy to snap in half if he so chose. He did not.
Instead Connor fucked you into the night using his advanced protocols and physical upgrades for their initial purpose. RK800 equipped with the latest technologies, stronger than any who has come before. Able to use a guise and seduce if need be due to Cyberlife’s engineering.
Despite this mere programming he felt - pleasure. Unable to fight this unnecessary sensation created a stronger will to fight deviancy from spreading.
It still threads dangerously down to the wires glistening in sparks, a portion of glittering visible from an open slice upon his cheek. A small injury following the fight with Lieutenant Anderson; the seasoned detective fell to his death from rooftop.
“I told you not to follow me, Y/N.” Connor’s voice is cool. No emotion holds his features. He simply chastises your involvement knowing that you will not approve of him getting rid of the lieutenant. No one must stand in the way. They never had a chance of stopping him.
Jericho is no more. Markus is dead. The revolution is ended and Connor is the all encompassing storm that tore it to pieces.
“C-Con.” Choking out as lungs fill with blood it’s not his weapon that took you down. It was misfire from soldiers. Through blindness of pain all you heard next were horrific screams. Those soldiers...he tore them apart. For you? No, of course not. It was to remain the victor. They can never kill Connor. He’s an immortal being so powerful, so cruel but you love him.
Reaching up brings a palm to his cheek. Even splattered in a mix of thirium and human blood he is the face you long to see. “I-I knew,” you strain. “I knew you would kill me.”
Connor’s eyes lock onto yours. He stares, unmoved but inside...inside his head is screaming. Beyond the code, syntax blocks blaring red, another voice cries out in the void of machine.
“Y/N! Please! No!” The deviant echo trapped behind the wall can only watch in horror as you slowly slip from existence.
The machine that Connor chose to remain is all that is left. He watches you die a slow, painful death because you could not obey. You could not listen. Following him here sealed this path.
Detroit Become Human Thoughts - Spoilers
Playing through Detroit is a very different experience to Heavy Rain. By and large I find myself impressed more on a technical level than an emotional one. The story is familiar, an allegorical civil rights that is seen in countless sci-fi and fantasy media, albeit one that leans more heavily than usual on real life civil rights imagery and iconography. The familiarity is not necessarily a fault, there is plenty of room for DBH among the genre, fitting comfortably alongside X-men and I,Robot etc. However, the choice to overtly homage aspects of civil rights history is little uncomfortable at times, given that the game largely doesn’t acknowledge it. Aside from one POC character late in the game, no one ties the androids struggle together with that of real world minority groups, which means the decision to cast a large number of these deviant androids POCs doesn’t always sit well, particularly when their fate is frequently in the hands of a white character for better or worse. This being said, it is not every game’s duty to cover all issues, but it does ring a little false when a game telling this particular type of story seems unwilling to recognise the link, content to leave it as subtext even when innocent POC characters are gunned down by police and others kept as literal slaves by white characters.
Equally Kara’s story is very hard to watch at times, when it seems each successive incident gets worse and worse. David Cage has come under fire for the way women are treated in his games before, but to be fair to him, in HR I largely felt it fit with both the tone and genre of the game. Yes, the women in the story get into horrible situations but also by and large have their own agency and agendas. The violence was schlocky, but in an old school thriller way, it didn’t feel too gratuitously out of place. In DBH it feels like Kara goes from horror to horror with little reprieve. She also has very little agency compared with the other player characters. Even when she breaks free from her programming, she is only able to shoot Todd by accident in self-defence (when I quite happily would have gunned that motherfucker down) after he slaps the gun out of her hands. Again, child abuse and domestic violence are important issues which can and should be discussed, but the portrayal feels exploitative rather than meaningful.  Compare this with the scene where Markus drags his broken body through the junkyard; this too is a horrific scene, however it’s one that fits well in the context. It’s a complete whiplash from Markus’ treatment by Carl and is a pure nightmare to navigate, but it punches you in the gut with how androids are treated and gives an immediate sense of “this is what we are fighting for” and Markus’ climb out of the pit is a triumphant moment. Kara doesn’t really get any of those triumphant moments, merely evading or escaping, sometimes very narrowly, though admittedly does get the more heartwarming moments too, though much later in the game.
Having said all of this, these issues with the story largely fade away heading into the final third. The game becomes both more interesting and whether it becomes less problematic or just feels that way because I was becoming more wrapped up in the story I’m not sure, but my feelings towards the end of the game towards the game as a whole were much warmer than the earlier chapters. Equally, to be fair to Quantic Dream, the arguable “lead” character is a POC android and is the driving force of the game, along with a number of other strong supporting POC characters. I also don’t think any of the missteps come from a place of malice, I believe DBH is earnestly trying its best to be inclusive and the fact that it ended up telling its story a little clumsily in this regard should not be a damning indictment of the game, but a call to try and improve next time.
I’ve also gone a long time without talking about my favourite character pairing: Connor and Hank. I should take a moment to say that all the main player actors perform admirably, Valorie Curry’s quietly resolved Kara, Jesse Williams plays Markus (at least in my run) with a determined understated performance which nonetheless has a commanding presence which makes you believe he’d be able to lead an android rebellion. However, it’s Bryan Dechart – funnily enough the only one of the three I’d not seen previously in TV or film – who has the most captivating performance. In part This may partly be due to his story being a more straightforward detective/thriller story, one the writing team has more experience with crafting, but Dechart’s efforts certainly elevate it portraying Connor with subtlety and nuance, accompanied by a surprisingly soulful turn from Clancy Brown. The prologue featuring Connor – also released as a demo – was the reason I picked up the game, as it hit that sweet spot which I subsequently found in HR of narrative and gameplay synergy. Clinically collecting evidence in order to talk down a hostage taking android, each clue providing more options to negotiate.
Speaking of the gameplay, by and large, the QTEs involved in DBH are less immersive than those of HR, none provoke the same visceral sensation that the trials did, or the instinctual gunshot, or even the cathartic shootout. The fight scenes have improved though and do feel more immediate and better choreographed - understandable, given the superhuman nature of the androids. I do also appreciate the newer mechanics like the investigation sequences - more involved and detailed than those found in the Batman: Arkham series – and the “route planner” style puzzles.
I also very much applaud DBH for allowing the android revolution storyline to be played entirely pacifistically or violently; were this a movie, the characters may begin peacefully, but become violent and vengeful after an inciting incident, but pleasingly DBH never takes that choice away from you. Equally heartening is the statistics at the end of each level, showing that the majority of players usually choice the peaceful choice. The choices in general are frequent and more gradual, creating a slow burn approach that allows you to waver and change your mind. My Connor was very much undecided through most of the game, wavering between deviancy and the mission, emotion and logic. These smaller choices work very well in keeping you invested in the characters and slowly building up the picture.
I’m very nearly at the end now, hoping I don’t mess it up as badly as I did in HR.
Pick-Up Lines Pt 3
Summary: You had invited him over after work, telling him you had some notes on the case that you'd forgotten but wanted him to read over. When he asked why you couldn't just transfer the data to his computer you gave him the most adorably embarrassed look. He hadn't honestly thought you'd be capable of being embarrassed, not when just two hours ago you had made a comment about him reminding you of your toe; because I'm gonna bang you on every surface imaginable.
[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 4]
Warnings: Swearing, sexual tension, the usual
Word count: 2000
A/N: I KNOW I promised smut but look guys it’s gonna start out the next chapter it’ll take place immediately after this part !!!! Thank you guys so much for the overwhelming support, I can’t even explain how much it means to me, and I promise I’ll work on being more consistent with updates lmao
Tumblr media
Connor wanted something. Something he hadn't quite accepted until he replayed his memory files from the bar at least 50 times. It came with what he was understanding as an addiction to the giddiness your smile inspired. That simulated adrenaline rush was the closest he'd ever felt to being human, and it was because of you.
He wanted you to look at him with that spark in your eye when he flirted back, he wanted your arms wrapped around his neck again, fingers playing with the synthetic hair on the back of his neck. He wanted to nuzzle your noses together and feel your breath against his face and feel the warmth of your hips on his fingertips.
Most of all, he wanted your lips on his.
"Hey Connor! I'm grabbing donuts for everyone in the precinct and could use some extra hands, and since I'm sure you're pretty good with yours, did you wanna join?" You tilted your head at the end and he was subjected to an error message running through his programming. You were literally too cute for his software to handle.
"Ok." Was all he could manage while he tried to shut out the blinking red words. It didn't help when your fingers wrapped around his wrist and pulled him out of his chair.
---
You were waiting in line for your coffee when his first chance came. You'd swung around after cheerfully giving the barista your name for the cups and seemed to size Connor up.
"So I forgot to bring my library card with me, can I still check you out?" You said with a bit of a laugh at the end, taking another step closer. Connor calculated that you were about 13 inches away from him, almost close enough to feel your body heat on his sensors.
"I believe you already have." He had learned that flirting was more successful when he lowered his voice, so he was glad to register a little shiver run through you when the words left his lips.
"Well I guess that means I have 2 weeks to do whatever I want with you," Your fingers found his tie, using it to pull him a couple inches closer before straightening it out again. His thirium pump was running wild and all he could focus on was your lips. He was reminded of how magnetic you felt, especially at this distance.
When you glanced up at his face he decided it was now or never. He leaned forward slowly, coming close enough to feel your breath on his skin. He noted that you were moving closer too, flicking your eyes down to his lips.
"Y/N!"
You jumped away, huffing out an unsteady breath and then turned back to pick up the coffee and donuts, shoving some into Connor's stunned arms and practically pushing him out the doors.
---
His second chance came in an elevator with you and Hank, heading up to a crime scene. He was rolling his coin over his knuckles, it helped him sort through memory files and construct future plans of action.
Or, as a human might say, it helped him think.
"Connor you'd better put that thing away, it's starting to piss me off." Hank warned, as he always did when the coin tricks came out. You knew it was less out of anger and more out of jealousy, having seen Hank try and fail the same tricks.
"Leave him alone Hank, they're fun to watch." You rolled your eyes playfully, sending a small smirk Connor's way before continuing a little quieter, "Besides, it makes you think of all the other things those fingers could be good at."
"I should've taken the stairs." Hank scoffed, purposefully looking away to ignore the way Connor's lips twitched up. "Fuckin' disgusting." He muttered to himself pointedly.
"Y/N, were you aware that I can fluently speak 3756 different languages? Do you know what that means?" He raised an eyebrow, which might've been the most emotion he'd ever shown you, and it was almost too much to keep your drool in your mouth.
You shrugged.
"It means that I'm just as skilled with my tongue." His wink is what really got you, making you take a shamefully long time to pick your jaw up off the ground.
His LED was a steady blue, something you knew you had to change before you stepped off the elevator and actually had to do your job. Plus, you were not about to lose this little flirting competition to an android who had only flirted twice.
"That's quite the promise loverboy," You all but sauntered to him, using your finger to trace his jawline and guide his chin towards you. "I think you'd better prove it."
And there it was, the blinking yellow on his temple. You knew you should put your hand back at your side and step away in success, basking in the glory of his confused reaction.
You should, but you don't.
Connor has this sort of glimmer in his eyes when you look back at him, and it feels the same as when you were in the coffee shop, like you were gravitating towards him. It all but erases the thought that you should pull back and forget how pretty he looks from this close, every perfectly placed freckle and symmetrical plane of his face. It almost seemed like a good idea to kiss him at this point, since you were already most of the way there.
Then the elevator door beeped and slid open, and Hank loudly left, grunting about you damned horny kids and how you forgot I was even fuckin there.
He pulled away slightly, like he was fighting with himself. His eyes flicked over your shoulder and into the crime scene, he was having a difficult time assessing which option would have the best outcome.
Then his hand glided up your wrist and held your hand in place. His eyes locked with yours and you had to fight to keep breathing; Connor seemed so intense that your heart was hammering in your chest. His head tilted down and his lips brushed over your fingers, sending tingles down your arm.
"I'd like to take a rain check." And then he stepped past you and joined Hank in the crime scene.
---
The third time, he really hadn't planned on doing anything. Not until the last second.
You had invited him over after work, telling him you had some notes on a case that you'd forgotten but wanted him to read over. When he asked why you couldn't just transfer the data to his computer you gave him the most adorably embarrassed look. He hadn't honestly thought you'd be capable of being embarrassed, not when just two hours ago you had made a comment about him reminding you of your toe; because I'm gonna bang you on every surface imaginable.
Either way, you couldn't send it to him because you had written it down the old fashioned way, on paper. Connor had nearly forgotten that paper existed, even books were digital nowadays.
He had to search his database to come up with a word to describe the feeling of his components melting when you sheepishly told him this - 'Endearing' fit the best. You did, in fact, inspire affection on his part. And he liked the idea that you weren't completely dependent on technology; maybe that's why you'd always treated him more like a person instead of a machine.
He wondered why he was frustrated with that before becoming deviant, especially since he was so happy about it now.
"Shit, I know I threw it here somewhere," You said mindlessly, tossing piles of dated paperback books and manila folders all around your living room. Connor must've been too distracted the other morning when he came in if he had ignored such obvious evidence of your paper consumption.
But he couldn't blame himself, you were very distracting.
"Perhaps I could help?" He almost drawled, tucking his hands behind his back and tilting his head sincerely. You paused your shuffling to look at him before giving him a frustrated smile.
"I dug this grave myself but thanks. This better teach me to organize next time." You huffed, turning back. "Plus, this way you get a great view of my ass. Enjoy it."
He hadn't honestly thought about what a great view he had until then, but the little wiggle you did after that comment made him feel like short-circuiting. You were kinda too adorable for his program to properly compute.
"Aha!" You pulled a folder off the coffee table and waved it in the air, practically bouncing over to Connor. You pushed it into his chest, leaning in dangerously close. The reminder of how your shampoo smelt was enough to make his LED blink yellow, but the real culprit was the glint in your eyes.
"So, what do I gotta do to get a reward for this?" The RK800 model wasn't equipped with a sensor in its mouth to warn it against dehydration, but Connor still felt like his mouth went dry. The annoying red text in the corner of his vision was reminding him that kissing you then would only yield a 74% success rate.
With you, he wasn't all that willing to chance your relationship for anything less than 99%.
"What kind of reward were you thinking of?" His voice was lower again, the way that made every part of you shiver. His chances rose by 5%.
"Hmm," He watched his favourite smirk crawl onto your lips and his thirium seemed to hum in anticipation. A kiss, maybe? That would be the obvious flirty response, but for once he was hoping you'd be predictable and go for it. "I have some dishes that really need washing."
Connor found it increasingly difficult to hide his emotions, the more he felt the more he seemed to show. Right then he was sure everyone within a 10 mile radius could see how disappointed he was, slumping his shoulders just slightly and twisting his lips into a small frown. Even though he loved the sound of your giggle, it wasn't quite enough to make him smile again.
"Maybe I should read over these notes to verify their usefulness before I reward you for anything." He grumbled, which was possibly the cutest tone he'd used so far.
"Awe cheer up hot stuff! If it's not worth your time in the end I can give you a different kind of reward." You reached a hand up to run over his cheek, and for the extra second that you left it there, Connor swore he saw your devious smirk melt into something genuinely caring.
It only lasted a second, but a second had never felt so stretched out before. He felt like the earth had swallowed him up whole and everything beyond you was empty space. There was just you, and it was all he really wanted.
"But you gotta wash some plates first, how else am I gonna enjoy my favourite snacc if the table I plan to enjoy him on is covered?" You tapped his nose and turned away from him, officially ending the moment.
But the thought occurred to Connor, what exactly was stopping him from kissing you? Wasn't it an incredibly human thing to ignore statistics, especially when the odds weren't in your favour (which was not his case), and just do what you wanted? Wasn't he trying to be more human? What exactly was he scared about here?
Nothing, he honestly had nothing to fear.
So his arms wrapped around your waist before you could step away from him, tugging you against his chest gently. He craned his neck down so his mouth was right next to your ear, the perfect distance for you to feel his lips brush against it when he spoke.
And oh, when he spoke your heart stopped beating. His voice was low and quiet and it reverberated in your skull like thunder during a storm.
"I think I'd rather cash in that rain check Y/N."
