Hyper Light Breaker: Meet PB
PIVOTING TOWARD CHARACTER-BASED STORYTELLING
A while ago, we shared that we were developing Hyper Light Breaker with a limited form of character creation in mind - our player “characters” would be specific species, all following the same character archetype. The goal was to reduce animation scope down significantly by sticking with the single archetype.
As time went on, however, we discovered that a specific story was taking shape. And it needed to be told through a discrete cast of characters with their own backstories, motivations, and personalities.
We are now pivoting away from broader character customization, in favor of enriching player experience and empathy through highlighting each of these unique characters and their journeys through the world. We are still retaining customization in the form of offering near limitless loadout options, hub options, and other ways for players to have agency over this world.
With that said, please meet…
PROTOBREAKER
PB was featured prominently in our Announcement Trailer, but the character’s identity and role in the Hyper Light universe has been shrouded in mystery since. We’re now ready to share a little more about her.
You meet PB in the Hotel Lobby of the Hub, the launch point for all of your ventures into the Overgrowth. A former highly skilled Breaker herself, she now works a desk job where she assigns and oversees Breaker missions.
PB has a long history in this world. But she is generally reserved, and minces few words. It is up to you to uncover her past, and play a crucial role in writing this new chapter in her story.
PB IN THE WORLD OF HYPER LIGHT
PB has a unique role in Breaker’s narrative. The abandoned wilds of the Overgrowth are shrouded in mystery, and PB has been here since they were first sealed away from the rest of the world.
Within the Breakers, PB is your commander, so she passes along your marching orders from Breaker HQ. But like you, she’s curious about the Overgrowth’s mysteries. In particular, she wants to learn the goals and motivations of the Crowns—why do they fight the Breakers? What are they protecting, and why?
PB knows many secrets about this place, but she’s not quite sure which of them are relevant to the mystery. When you discover some brand new information about the Crowns or the Overgrowth, you’ll bring those stories back to PB. She’ll share her own memories with you, and help you put the mystery together.
PB has a few secrets herself, too. She’s been living in the Overgrowth for a long time, and she seems to have a strange personal connection to the Crowns. If you help her discover more about the Overgrowth, she may share some of her history with you!
LET US HEAR FROM YOU!
How do you feel about our character-based storytelling process?
What do you think happened to PB?

GRILLZ
Day 1
It's become apparent that this whole project is going to be trial and error. The dental impression trays I bought were far too wam for my big gob; It took a couple messy attempts to fit them in my mouth but I just couldn't manage to get a clean impression.
But fear not! I've ordered some smaller trays and I'll try again, now that I'm familiar with the process it'll be easy pickings next time.
With the impression I was most successful with, I made a plaster mould and a wax mould. Both moulds could potentially be used, that all depends on which method the project advisor decides on Friday, which is when I plan to plate the wax mould in copper or an alternative metal.
In all honesty though, I think I'd do a better job at making the mould and waxing up myself at home. I might just buy everything I need now, I'll be using it again anyways as I plan to make multiple grills for myself as well as for my friends. If I buy all that shit now, make the mould and wax it up, I can take it to the jewellers and have them cast it in silver. Or Ive been thinking about going to a car boot sale and finding some silver spoons, I might get lucky you never know!

on startup point any team works within a minimal budget in a short time. With limited resources, they need to develop new products based on the project idea. MVP can help these uncertainties, maintain a customer-centric approach, and roll out your product on time and within minimal budget.
MVP development is a process of product iteration that consists of three main components: the minimal product, user engagement measurement, and data learning.

Platformer Development Post - week 3
Greetings, fellow adventurers!
Just here with another update!, We have now entered week 4 of IGB120 and have started bringing our game ideas to life. This week has been around game culture, playstyle and the game development process. The initial Game idea proved to be more difficult then expected, however we are pushing forward! We have made success in conquering the challenges of random maze generation and now onto the interactives!
Mastering the Maze:
Repetition can become quite boring. We want to create a game that offers a fresh experience with every playthrough. We want to have the same goals in mind, but a different challenge each time the player runs through the game. To achieve this, we delved headfirst into the world of random generation, crafting algorithms that would breathe life into our ever-changing mazes. After countless iterations and a few hours reading up on GDevelop capabilities, we finally emerged victorious, with a system that creates a new and random maze for each playthrough. In the future we want to also include random enemies and interactable items.
Navigating Animation Hurdles:
As we basked in the glow of our maze generation triumph, a new obstacle loomed on the horizon: player animation. Even though it is supposed to be a simple task, and one of the first examples we learnt in class, despite our best efforts, we found ourselves struggling to make our player animation work. From idle stances to running and shooting, every movement needed to be pixel-perfect to ensure a seamless gaming experience and make the game a little more interesting. While we are stuck now, we are sure that we will be able to fix this issue, just maybe with some help in the next weeks workshops!
Enemies and Interactables:
With the groundwork laid for our random maze system and player animation underway, we set our sights on the next frontier: adding enemies and interactables to our ever-evolving world. Drawing upon our idea of a Maze Runner and Binding of Isaac crossover, we began populating our maze with formidable foes and tantalizing treasures. We aim to enable some form of difficulty setting and random item generation that can make each playthrough completely different.
Reflections on the Journey:
As we reflect on our progress thus far, we can't help but marvel at how far we've come. At first this seemed like just a fun idea, but as each day goes by and progress is made. It is growing to a reality, an actual game we can play and enjoy. A piece of work we are proud of. We are beginning to run some play-testing and fine tuning all the different aspects of the game. Get Out is only going to get better and better as time goes on!

What's your process for creating characters?
Imagine a weirdo. Give 'em one or more of my character flaws. Figure out how to hurt 'em.
#ok but for real#its not really a process#it feels very holistic#they get developed but come to me pretty fully formed

the most difficult thing about growing as a person socially, as in getting out of your shell and noticing that you are, is that there will still be times when it doesn’t feel like you’ve grown at all! times when you can’t really connect with anyone around you, times when you fail to enter into an existing conversation, times when you say the wrong thing (or nothing at all when in hindsight you probably should’ve). but that’s also kind of the best thing, because that’s the thing that helps you realize that sometimes, it’s not you or your lack of skills or any shortcoming. sometimes certain environments just aren’t for you and certain people aren’t your people, and that’s okay. that’s human. it’s okay to not feel the progress you have made all the time.
#and that goes for every type of growth#backstory of this post:#after I came back after a few months of doing my international internship I felt so much more confident#it was easier making friends and walking up to people#i took more chances#and generally just heard it a lot from those around me who kept telling me how much i’d changed#this was further supported by my first office job that went pretty well#but then came my grad internship. and while i love the work and have met some great people I noticed it was difficult again#there was one office lunch where no one spoke to me at all! it was my first week and I didn’t know what to say#if i should even say anything#we were all sitting at the same table#not one person even glanced my way#it made me doubt myself; i was doing so well before#was that even real? why can’t I just speak up? this is not the way to connect with people#especially in my first week!#but you know what#i was still doing well. i just had to factor in the fact that these were all middle aged people talking about reality shows i didn’t watch#and bikes i knew nothing about#as well as people who knew i was the new intern yet didn’t speak to me at all even though I’d introduced myself to them all individually#and even so#people I couldn’t really talk to about MY interests outside of work either#my point being:#it’s okay to not feel a connection with everyone you meet#it’s okay to fall back into old habits even though you’ve developed new ones#it will never unravel the process you’ve made and the connections you’ve built#you’re doing fine#after this internship I will surround myself with people who reaffirm that belief#growth in the self#self love#positivity

Nervous Caine my beloved, you draw him so well
Thank you!! Get very used to seeing him that way-
Despite being an AI, Caine displays a lot of anxiety and self deprecating symptoms, and being an AI, he does NOT know how to handle these feelings healthily. Also since I HC him as autistic, or displaying symptoms akin to autism, it makes understanding these negative emotions much harder, as well as expressing them.
Thankfully, he finds comfort in someone who really understands his feelings-
