“Greenwich Time Pub” (Congress Street Entrance) There’s something magical about this place. It has two separate entrances, and if you don’t know better you might think it’s two different bars before you walk through the door. At the time I shot this, I was walking by and the sign caught my eye so I decided to capture the moment. It’s interesting to think back to what Detroit was like that year, especially just months before we filed for bankruptcy. There was a tension in the city, mainly caused by what the employees of the city were going through: threat of losing their pensions; employee cut backs in city jobs ~ including the police + fire departments, meanwhile fires were up across the city, especially further out from downtown. I was dating a Detroit firefighter at the time and lived right outside of downtown while working for the Detroit Convention & Visitors Bureau (@VisitDetroit) but despite all of the bs, Detroit never lost her sparkle to me.
 So many places didn’t make it through 2020, it makes me happy to know that Greenwich is still rocking their brews and delicious sandwiches. I found an old write-up from @OpportunityDetroit that I’m sharing below for anyone interested in more history. One of the things that I find curious is the “Est. 1955” when the bar wasn’t purchased and renamed Greenwich Time Pub until 1966… I started shooting documentary photography back in 2007, when I got my first “portable camera” as I refer to it (iPhone 1). This mostly likely would’ve been an iPhone 4 or 5. Or it could’ve been my Samsung, I didn’t look because I fully edited it on my iPad w/o taking it to my laptop where I make edits prior to listing images on my website. SUGAR HOUSE: SERVING UP UNIQUE CRAFT COCKTAILS IN DETROIT

The term “craft cocktail” has been popping up on menus all over the place. To call a drink craft, it simply means that every element is tailored specifically to that cocktail – down to the type of glass and custom ice cubes. Though the craft cocktail craze seems to be spreading like wildfire recently – Sugar House has been dedicated to serving thirsty Detroiters with their unique drink creations since 2011 and boy does it show.

The Sugar House is located right on the same block as Slows and Gold Cash Gold. There is free street parking along Michigan Ave. and there’s also a large parking lot about a block east, between Labash St. and Vermont street. The facade of Sugar House is all black with a beautifully crafted sign hanging by the door and you can stop in and grab a drink any day of the week after 5pm.

Now, keep in mind that Sugar House is not serving your average rum and coke – they are creating hand-crafted cocktails using the highest quality liquors, bitters, syrups and more. With that being said, cocktails range from $8- $14 and they also offer a great selection of beer ($3-$10) as well as wines ($7-$12). Their menu changes seasonally and they also offer small plates ($1-$15) to munch on while you’re sipping. I am a huge fan of drinks with a little kick to them, so I tried the Mexican Cooler ($13) with jalapeno-infused Vida Mezcal, cilantro syrup and lime topped with Topo Chico. It was everything I hoped for – the perfect combination of spicy and sweet, without either being to overpowering.

Besides the delicious cocktails, the vibe is a huge reason why I love Sugar House. Sometimes places that fall into the more “high-end” category can be uptight or feel intimidating to people who are visiting for the first time. But not at Sugar House – the bartenders are friendly, knowledgable and love to chat about what type of drink they are crafting. If you sit at the bar you are guaranteed to lean something new about the art of cocktails. Combine that with their cool, speakeasy feel and this place is one you wont soon forget.
