The night of March 3rd, 2017, was unlike the usual quiet nights in Rotterdam. During that night, the squares of Rotterdam were flooded by people. News reports from NOS, NU.nl and Nieuwsblad.be reported that many Turkish immigrants gathered in front of the Turkish consulate to listen and support the Turkish Minister of Family Affairs. According to Plato’s Ideal Republic, the reality of the current situation could have been improved if only philosophers (king-philosophers) would rule the nation and carried out the politics. They are the ones who are practiced in seeing the truth (Braembussche, 2009). Additionally, soldiers would provide security, and the civilians would merely deliver manual labor. The goal of this republic would be to reach an optimum of justice (Braembussche, 2009; Plato, 1998). In the case of the riot that happened in Rotterdam, the soldiers would be represented by the police. However, the civilians were not just delivering manual labor, but tried to mingle with politic circumstances by manifesting the riot. According to Plato, this is due to the fact that the politicians do not contribute to their best. If they did, the citizens would have corresponded to their roles (Plato, 1998).

Of course, Plato’s theories and ideas are very old and one could say that they are far from applicable to our current, modern society. Additionally, trying to satisfy everyone in the society is quite unfeasible. Especially with the many demands our current society has. However, though his Ideal Republic cannot be applied to our society, we think that his idea of ascetic lifestyle is something the whole population can learn from. Nowadays, people are so overly stimulated by many motivations and often live with a ‘the grass is always greener on the other side’-mentality. Therefore, learning to live ascetically could contribute to every individual’s personal growth and increase happiness.
