Something that crossed my mind when perusing the latest Touhou manga chapters is that I think ZUN often has difficulty making events flow naturally from one to another, and to cover for it, he ends up overwriting a lot of expository stuff that slows things down and takes up precious real-estate in the stories he wants to tell. It's kind of evident in the meme that most Touhou games are 4 stages of beating up randos followed by only 2 stages of people actually related to the incident, but I think a better point of comparison would between the latest chapter of CDS, where Reimu stays at Myouren temple, and the Sanae-san is On the Run doujin by WaHH artist Aya Azuma, where Sanae does the same thing. Both cover the same beats, with a shrine maiden getting an intro to the Buddhists and life at their temple, but Azmaya is able to cover a lot more ground in a lot less space than ZUN did.
More below the cut -- lots of manga pages and spoiler warnings for both comics. As a side note, I wanted to try using colored text to help break up all the black & white and make things easier to follow, but I apologize if it's distracting.
In Detective Satori, our first mention of the Myouren temple is in the end of chapter 23 as the place Reimu and presumably Satori suspect Mizuchi is at next, and so we spend the tail end of that chapter with several pages of establishing panels of the Myouren crew there before Reimu arrives confronting Kyouko, all without dialogue.
Come chapter 24, we begin with... more establishing panels of the Myouren crew doing day-to-day activities, this time accompanied by dialogue and mean-spirited titles, presumably assigned to them by either Reimu or Aya.
We don't even get to see Reimu's request to stay at the temple until page 10 of this chapter, and even then it is only indirectly through Ichirin's mention. By the time we get to Reimu on page 12, she's grouchily preparing a vegetarian meal at the temple before re-affirming to herself her desire to catch Mizuchi here -- which is something we already know from last time, about 18 total pages ago.
After this, that's the last we see of Reimu throughout the chapter - the rest is spent catching up with Aya and Marisa, which also isn't segued smoothly and instead relies on a cut to a couple pages of Kogasa's antics in the graveyard before Aya and Marisa chime in and discuss their own reasons for being there.
I could go on and post more pages from the chapter, but you get the point. The issue here is that there's no transition between these scenes -- rather than link these events together in any logical way, ZUN relies on lots of establishing material as filler to act as a buffer between separate events. You can see how it would be easy to join all this stuff together smoothly without so much establishment, which would give the meat of this thriller story some much-needed real estate. If you don't want to portray the scene where Reimu requests to stay, have ch. 24 begin with Reimu already prepping stuff at the temple, complete with the same grumblings about their lifestyle. From there, the action could driven by her interactions with some of the Buddhist crew -- not necessarily all of them, given the nature of the situation and the tension you want to preserve, but at least one or two of them. Then you can cut either cut to outside and have Aya and Marisa spy on or interrogate Kogasa, or even better, have Aya appear in a window and chat with Reimu, then you can have Marisa spot them from above and swoop in, and then they could all trade notes. Even if we are generous and give the Myouren temple the 5 pages of establishment it has at the end of chapter 23, there's no reason to do so much of it again at the start of chapter 24 and again again with Kogasa during its middle unless you're either deliberately padding things out, struggling for segues, or deliberately padding things out because you're struggling for segues.
Contrast this with Azmaya's comic. Here, the on-the-run Sanae meets Byakuren on the road after Reimu's attempts to exploit the spat between Sanae and her gods backfires. Byak good-naturedly offers her a place to stay after helping her clear up the aftermath of that.
From there, Sanae gets a crash course from Ichirin on the Buddhists' lifestyle, which she also grumbles about for the same reasons as Reimu, but comes to admire in her own way...
...before catching Ichirin and the others cheating on their discipline and storming out of the temple in betrayed frustration!
I would argue that more happens in just these 7 pages with Sanae here than in over 15 pages of CDS with Reimu. Azmaya's able to establish the Myouren temple as the next destination for Sanae in only a page or so, and the ascetic training there is conveyed efficiently in a training montage for Sanae, rather than two separate multi-page exposition scenes of the Myouren crew going through their daily routines. By the time we've reached 12 pages from the start of this chapter here -- where in CDS we were just beginning to see Reimu reacting to temple life -- Sanae's getting squabbled over by Shou as part of an effort to keep Sanae from damaging the temple's reputation.
I know CDS and this doujin have very different aims, and I know scripting a comic and handing it off to another artist leaves some artifacting that doing everything yourself does not. That said, Azmaya's comic had so much less fat on it than ZUN's, and a large part of that comes from how ZUN doesn't link events together well and so constantly re-establishes them, whereas Azmaya's events flow naturally from one another. Sanae at the was out in the village trying to gather embarrassing flyers Reimu made of her, and with Byakuren being a prominent figure there, it's highly plausible the two would meet up coincidentally. This conceit acts as a springboard for everything that happens in this chapter, whose ending in turn acts as a springboard for Shou to chase after her in the next chapter, which itself springboards into further events easily. There's a little re-establishment at the start of the chapter -- it is a serial -- but it's very casual. There's no starting and stopping like there constantly is in CDS: everything builds upon each other with grace and ease in a way that keeps the story going. And because of this constructive structure, Sanae can go through the same beats with Byakuren here that Reimu did in CDS in a much more efficient number of manga panels.

A3! Backstage Story Translation - Tasuku Takato SSR - Today's Star: Keiji Nakatsu - Part 1
Tasuku: … And it seems like it all worked out in the end.
Fuyuki: “Haha, I see. … Oops, I gotta get back to work.”
Fuyuki: “I’m gonna go. Also, Mom said she wants to see you, so come visit at some point. You can tell Tsumu to come too.”
Tasuku: Got it. See you.
[Call hangs up]
Tasuku: Whew…
[Door knocking]
Izumi: Tasuku-san, are you inside?
Tasuku: Yeah. You can come in.
Izumi: Sorry for disturbing you. Your spin-off has been decided, so I came to tell you.
Tasuku: The short story spin-off project with a supporting character, right?
Tasuku: Which character did it end up being?
Izumi: Fufufu… Well, you see…
Tasuku: … Oi, Director. Don’t put on airs.
Izumi: Ahaha, I’m sorry. You seemed excited, so I wanted to tease you a little.
Tasuku: Please don’t start acting like Azuma-san.
Izumi: Your character is Nakatsu from the second performance, “My Master Likes A Mystery”!
Tasuku: Nakatsu, huh? It’s been a while, I’m looking forward to this.
Izumi: Nakatsu and his sense of justice were cool! I’m also looking forward to it.
Izumi: If you have any ideas for the spin-off, please talk with Tsuzuru-kun.
Tasuku: Yeah, will do.
-
Tsumugi: Oh, I just remembered, your character for the spin-off is Nakatsu, right? The Director told me.
Tasuku: Yeah.
Tsumugi: Since Nakatsu will be the protagonist of the story, wouldn’t asking Fuyuki-kun for some pointers be a good idea?
Tasuku: … That’s what I was thinking too, actually. I was going to visit my family home soon.
Tsumugi: That’s great timing, then.
Tasuku: I haven’t been back in a while, so Aniki told me to come visit at some point.
Tasuku: Do you want to come with if you’re free?
Tsumugi: Is that okay?
Tasuku: Aniki said to ask you to come too, so I guess they want to see you.
Tsumugi: Fufu, I’ll take him up on his offer, then. Let me know when you’ve made proper plans.
Tasuku: Yeah, will do.
-
Tsumugi: Fuyuki-kun probably won’t be back by the time we get there.
Tasuku: Yeah. I’ll take my time asking him what I want to tonight.
Tsumugi: Do you have anything specific in mind for the spin-off performance?
Tasuku: … The Director asked that too. Since Nakatsu is a detective with a strong sense of justice. I think it’d be good if the story properly conveyed his humanity.
Tasuku: Can’t think of any specifics, though.
Tsumugi: You just got the news, so you can take your time thinking about it. You’ll naturally come up with what you want to do as you start getting into your role again.
Tasuku: True. … Talking about Nakatsu is making me feel like acting.
Tsumugi: I knew you’d say that. Should we do a Street ACT for a bit?
Tasuku: … Let’s do it.

some info about the various organizations in coe, as seen from the artbook (please let me know if you see any errors, i was a bit careless with romanization as you can tell & this is very rough)
Otowa Detective Agency They do business as Otowa Search System, LLC (kk otowa search system). A privately-owned detective agency in Nagoya managed by Genshi Otowa. When they expanded and moved their main office to Tokyo, the Nagoya office became their country one. Because they've been trustworthy at handling their jobs, they've gotten more and more customers, and because they listen to the will of their employees, they've managed to recruit and keep a lot of talented people on staff. Despite the fact that they're a small-scale company now, the requests haven't stopped. They have six people at the Nagoya branch, and about 30 at the Tokyo one. Path to Empireo
It started as the self-improvement group 'People of Akasha', and became a new organization with a new religion based on Catholicism. It wasn't a very large-scale group- around 2015, there were only about 300 registered believers in the country. The incident where the Tokyo and Chuubu branches exploded claimed many of their lives, completely destroying the organization itself. It seemed like the remaining survivors died natural deaths around the same time as well. They said they're researching the path to 'guide humanity to Empireo'.
Ice Cooler
A pharmaceutical company founded by the son of a pharmacist, Rangiri Utsugi. The position of president is inherited, so Rangiri passed it down to his son Keiichi, and he passed it down to his son Uenari. The company grew rapidly after WW2, with their main product being OTC medications. They were very famous for how well their medicines worked, but gradually said medicines started to work less and less. At the same time, there started to be a lot of 'suspicious' things about their medicine, as well as 'incidents' related to it, leading to public loss of trust in them. Before long, they were bought out by a foreign investor, their leadership was completely changed, and in 2016 the Ice Cooler name was no more.
Tranzykid Institute
An integrated sciences institute based in the American state of Kentucky. It's produced many Nobel Prize winners and candidates, and has quite a bit of influence as a research institute. However, all the departments act extremely independently of each other, and there are some laboratories among them that haven't revealed what they're actually working on.
Theosophy University
It was originally founded as a Catholic institution, but currently the management (Theosophy Institute of the Arts and Sciences) runs it as a private university. The curriculum focuses on raising students to be talented and successful in a global environment, with a strong focus on linguistics. It's not limited to Catholic-only students, either. There are people from all over the world attending, and many graduates have become famous in their own right. It's well-known enough as a university that everyone's heard of it. Other than their Tokyo campus, they have a Nagano campus as well.
Fondazione Riddle
Founded by Beniamino Riddle. Based in Italy. The current heir is the president's son, Rodney Riddle. They mainly provide financial support to organizations doing R&D in the field of science. Tranzykid is one of them. Their aim is 'For the world, and for the peace we have now' (but...).
A/Z/MA
Founded by Shirou Azuma. Their base business was Azuma Bookstore, a publishing company, but they're a corporation that handles all sorts of things in the entertainment industry. They've expanded into publishing, animation, movies, and various content services. Currently, no one working at the company besides the president is from the Azuma family themselves, but the current president, Wadachi Azuma, is a direct descendant of Shirou.
Nanamidou Bookstore, LLC
A bookstore chain under the Igarashi group. They used to only sell books, but they've branched out into music, videos, various media sales, and rentals, too.
Gojo Corporation/Igarashi Group
They're a business group that's made a name for themselves by expanding into every area. Despite the Gojo Conglomerate breaking up during WW2, they reorganized afterwards, and succeeded greatly. A major contractor in Tokai, Gojo, is also part of their group. Their most recent large-scale construction work is the commercial building in front of the Nagoya station. They've also done remodelling for A/Z/MA (LLC)'s Chuubu Branch office.
PMSC/GrassRod
A PMSC based in America. It recruits personnel from all sorts of countries, and there's a rumor that they'll send mercenaries who 'aren't afraid of death' anywhere. They're currently active, but the only thing that can be confirmed about them is that there is someone actually managing and controlling them. No other details are known.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by @leviathiane !
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
109!!! I'm a writing machine
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
507,410 ^-^
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mostly HxH right now, but I'm always thinking of writing more Zero Escape. I also have fics for AITSF, A3!, and other stuff (obligated to mention that I have 57 A3! fics)
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Care - Mizuki & Date (AITSF) Coexisting for Traumatized Detectives - Yosano & Dazai (BSD) An Undefined Truth - Killua/Gon (HxH) Shaking - Kokichi/Kaito (DRV3) Love, Justice, and the In Between - Boss & Date (AITSF) ...Most of these I still love, but one of them is indicative of my dark, dark past. I'll only link the top kudos'd.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes!!! I try to every time!!! Because I like getting responses as a reader mostly, it's nice to know that I've made someone's day better and I like the community that comes with comments!!! Also it's nice to add numbers to that comment counter.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
kill switch, save switch (Zero Escape) - Everyone dies in the Submarine Ending!!!!! Honorable mentions to: Turning Back (A3!) - Chikage abandons a child (not of his own choice, but fully aware of how damaging it is) and then thinks that they're probably dead Playing the Part (AITSF) - Iris is dead, but nobody knows it. Blood Trails Leading Home (AITSF) - It's an Annihilation End fic, everyone is dying and the antagonist is planning to kill even more people.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I try to give most things a hopeful ending at LEAST fdkfkkgfdff it's impossible to choose. I'll go with Follow the Light to its End, a Killugon fic that ends with a kiss ^-^
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not really? I did get a comment recently that said "once the confession is over, I don't feel the love anymore. Still nice fic," which......... thanks (sarcasm) Usually comments like that are people trying to be nice but ending up too blunt... so it's whatever.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Nah. Nothing against it, just not my zone.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Sometimes!!! Never in the form of X meets Y though, always putting one character into another's universe. I don't write them often, I'd write them more often if there were more people who would read them and my niche ideas. I think the only one I can remember posting is paradoxical, an A3/ZE crossover which. is crazy. What if Azuma's brother Hajime was actually Hisoka's brother August, but in the same way Akane from Zero Escape is June--the way that June is a mask, a cover. What if they were in a nonary game. What if Azuma accessed the morphogenetic field. CRAZY.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope! But I'm totally open to it!!!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Sort of!!! I did the Masukyu magic AU series with my friend Mikey :> Cowriting is really hard but it's fun.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
ALL TIME is hard. I'll give you a top 3: Killua/Gon (HxH), Hisoka/Homare (A3!), Junpei/Akane (ZE) Also honorable mention to Chikage/Citron/Itaru (A3!) for being the subject of my longest fic.
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I'm constantly writing like 5 things at once, so it's a gamble with everything I write... I really doubt I'm going to finish the Pariging time loop WIP I have though orz I really love what I have so far of it, it's just... I don't know where it's going orz
16. What are your writing strengths?
Character emotions!!! Showing how characters respond to each other!!! Introspection!!! I like to think I'm pretty good at a lot of things.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I've been working on making sure that my characters don't talk in a void lately T-T I'm not BAD at description, but it so often falls to the wayside... Also comedy is hard for me.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I mean... it can work, I suppose? I wouldn't do it myself, because I'm not confident in any language other than english (I'm sorry high school german teacher...! I fell off because of covid...! I'm unlikely to use more than a couple german words for Klavier's faux-german thing, if I ever write a fic about him, lol) When other people do it, it's fine, except if I notice them using it wrong I think it's silly.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
First fandom I wrote a fic for ever: Warrior Cats First fandom I posted a completed fic online for: My Hero Academia
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
Since I have so many it's kind of impossible to choose... But I'll say my long fics, especially the 40k multichapters. I put so much work into every long fic of mine, I can't choose a favorite child T-T Here's a link to my AO3, filtered for only fics over 10k words just in case anyone is interested in the 8 longer fics of mine Also mentioning you, at last, a little shorter than the above at 8.6k, but definitely one of my favorite A3 fics I wrote!!! It's a platonic soulmate AU, I'm constantly tempted to use the AU for another fandom because I think the rules of soulmates in it are really good. And while it's not a long fic, I reread smoke signals (HxH) recently and I love what I did with it. I think a lot about it still because I think that the offscreen apology Gon is implied to have given Killua is really interesting, and smoke signals is me writing my idea of it ^-^
Tagging... anyone who wants to, I suppose!!! If you're a writer and you're reading this I'm tagging you. Yes, you.

What did Santa give each of the Geats crew(apart from Ace as he got another fox plush, it’s an ongoing joke Santa has with the man/fox god)? Also Ace will materialize to punch anyone who tells Tsumuri Santa isn’t real (she is still innocent in some respects). Surprisingly, this wins the local Buffalo’s approval a small bit.
Keiwa: Police/detective training manuals
Neon: New filming gear for Neon TV
Azuma: Coupon for eat-all-you-can Kobe beef
Sara: Beauty and skincare products
Tsumuri: An Ace plushie designed for her to take out her frustrations on
As for the other thing... I guess even Buffabutt gets touched by the magic of Christmas

Obscure Animation Subject #61: 8 Man
Originally posted on April 21, 2023.
Also known as 8th Man in the US, this anime was produced by TCJ (now Eiken) and aired on TBS from November 7, 1963 to December 31, 1964 for 56 episodes. Its based on the manga by Kazumasa Hirai with illustrations by Jiro Kuwata.
Detective Yokoda is murdered by criminals and his body is retrieved by Professor Tani. Tani takes the body to his laboratory where he attempts to transfer Yokoda's life force into an android body, an experiment that has already failed seven times. Yokoda is reborn as an android.
Renamed to 8 Man, he is able to dash at impossible speeds as well as shape-shift into other people. He takes on his former body, this time taking on the name "Hachiro Azuma." He keeps this identity a secret, known only to Tani and his police boss, Chief Tanaka.
Even his girlfriend Sachiko and his friend Ichiro are not aware that he is an android. As 8-Man, Hachiro fights crime–eventually avenging his own murder. To rejuvenate his powers, he smokes "energy" cigarettes that he carries in a case. 8 Man is Japan's earliest cyborg superhero.
8 Man was so popular for its significance, the franchise spawned two live-action films, along with a 4-episode OVA series 8 Man After, produced by J.C.Staff. The series was released from August 21 to November 22, 1993, and was later adapted in manga form in 1994.
A manga sequel, 8 Man Infinity, was released between 2005 and 2007. The show also spawned a public domain cartoon account to get its username and profile. Isn’t that cool or what?! While TCJ had bigger latter successes like Sazae-san, 8 Man was an important part of its history.

Rpg Anon: Death Battle opponent for Mahiru, Kazuichi, Makoto, Junko, Kyoko, Sakura, Mukuro, and Peko.
//Alright, here’s a few.
Mahiru Koizumi Vs Frank West (Dead Rising)
Reason: Pretty obvious. They’re both photographers.
Kazuichi Soda Vs Narciso Anasui (JoJo: Stone Ocean)
Reason: It seems like a stretch, but it’s not. They actually have a lot in common
They both have pink hair (Asasui’s changes depending on source, but point stands.)
Their abilities relate to taking things apart. (Kazuichi’s Ultimate Mechanic Talent and Anasui’s Diver Down stand)
They both have history of using their talents out of bad habits (Kazuichi disassembling then reassembling ordinary objects to make them motorized and Anasui dissecting watches, toys, and cars as a kid)
They’re both massive simps for the regal girl in their respective universes (Sonia and Jolyne)
They both technically have criminal records (Anasui used his ability to tear his girlfriend and the guy she cheated on him with apart, and Kazuichi was obviously a Remnant of Despair)
Makoto Naegi Vs Sara Chidouin (Your Turn To Die)
Reason: I could have gone for someone like Phoenix Wright or Junpei from 999, but I feel Sara and Makoto, counting Survivor’s universe, are pretty equal in not just intellect, but power too. This is legitimately the most lore accurate and fair fight I could think of.
Kyoko Kirigiri Vs Professor Layton
Reason: Pretty obvious, they’re both badass detectives who have been through a lot.
Sakura Ogami Vs Daidōji (Kagura)
Reason: There are a few.
Both martial Art highschool students attending practically abnormal academies (Hanzo & Hope's Peak)
Both have toned their body's into hardened muscles and gained reputation for their dominant strength and fighting prowess (Daidõji being the strongest of her academy and Sakura becoming the Ultimate Martial Artist)
They both have practically the same reason for toning their bodies and constant training, in that they await the return of their rival in combat (Daidõji awaiting the arrival of her rival, Rin, in hopes of beating her and completing her Graduation Exam & Sakura wanting to earn the title of World's Strongest human herself by fighting Kenshiro).
Both are referred to with an “Ultimate Title” (Sakura is the “Ultimate Martial Artist” and Daidõji is the “Ultimate Upperclassman”)
Mukuro Ikusaba Vs Tokaku Azuma (Akuma no Riddle)
Reason: I could think of a lot for Mukuro, but this one is the most obvious. Both are short-haired high-school girls with a knack for taking lives and following orders. Plus, they’re both motivated greatly by their goal of protecting a particular person (For Mukuro it’s Makoto or Junko depending on universe, and for Tokaku it’s Haru.)
Peko Pekoyama Vs Afro Samurai
Reason: It SEEMS weird, but there are a variety of reasons.
Obviously, both are incredibly skilled with a sword, but are also known as the most profficient swordwielder in their respective universe (Peko has an Ultimate Title and Afro has the No.1 Headband.)
They also both learned their abilities from a very young age.
Both are incredibly serious and stoic, but have a softer side that is only shown to the people they care about and trust.
Both honor some sort of legacy (Afro honors his father’s legacy while Peko honors Fuyuhiko’s)
Tragically, both are orphans.

did anyone else watch Akuma no Riddle, look at some of the girls and go "why are you here?"
what I mean by that is I'm asking how they ended up in Class Black because while some of them have certain factors adding in to them being in Class Black I feel like others don't and it just makes me wonder in how the hell they ended up getting into Class Black
because Haru is the target so she's obviously in there(and also because of other stuff with like her bloodline and stuff? I don't know I watched Akuma no Riddle and then immediately forgot some things)
Tokaku us from the Azuma family, a very prominent family of assassins so I guess she got in because of her bloodline? (again, I don't remember well)
I think Sumireko had a similar case to Haru where it was about bloodline stuff?
Kouko, Shiena and Hitsugi are all from large organizations, two of them being more assassin based(at least I don't think Collective Dismissal is an assassination organization and now that I think about it I think maybe Shiena was in Class Black only to kill Otoya since Otoya killed someone from Collective Dismissal)
I don't really know about Isuke but since her mother is already an assassin and since I think he's a pretty good one maybe that influenced her getting a spot in Class Black? (on top of her also being an assassin that I assume is good at her job)
now for the ones I'm asking why they're in Class Black
Haruki I guess could fall on the border of having a reason on why she's in Class Black since she was already working as an assassin and maybe that got the attention of everyone behind Class Black
both Otoya and Banba were serial killers so that's probably what got them in but I'm just wondering how the people behind Class Black even knew about them being serial killers since Otoya says she had been doing pretty well as a serial killer and only had a single detective on her tail she was trying to get rid of
Suzu is mostly just a normal girl(apart from her Highlander Syndrome) so I don't know how she ended up in Class Black
and then out of everyone I'm pretty sure Chitaru is the most normal person and she's somehow in Class Black. Maybe her mentor(at least I think it was her mentor) had some connections and got her in? I seriously don't know
also I'm not including Nio here because she was already someone who was behind Class Black

Week 8: Digital Citizenship and Software Literacy: Instagram Filters
We have all used a filter at least once for personal use or to post on social media, right? Well, in this week's topic, we will dive into all things #face filters. Filters use augmented reality (AR) technology. This allows "users to see the real world, with virtual objects superimposed upon or composited with the real world." (Azuma 1997, p 355)
Facts: - Beauty and “surgery” filters appear to be amongst the most popular on Instagram and Snapchat (Miller & McIntyre 2022) - 46% of users have accessed a filter effect (week 8 lecture notes) - 500 million users access ‘stories’ daily (week 8 lecture notes) - 700 million users across Meta products access AR in some capacity (usually filters) every month. (week 8 lecture notes)

Snapchat face filters are used by many on the daily to cover up a pimple, add tan skin when looking too pale, to change someone's lips as if they have filler and hide those insecurities many hold. The filters act as a shield for many who don't like taking photos of themselves.
The "technological magic" (Arata, 2016) is when the app relies on a facial detection tool that recognizes patterns of light and dark pixels as distinct areas of the face. "The image within the camera’s frame is mapped out with a series of coordinates that identify these areas as eyes, lips and other features. The filters are then aligned with these coordinates so that virtual elements stay in place as a user moves around." (Vox, 2016)
Makeup brands like L'Oreal were a company that ran a sponsored Snapchat filter and their aim was ‘to capitalize on the playfulness of Snapchatters’ (Johnson 2016: n.pag.)
The use of filters comes with psychological consequences as each has its own set of critiques. This is the filter effect of nose slimming, face sculpting, lip tinting, eye enlarging, skin whitening and makeup enhancement. (Barker, Jessica. (2020) Filters have caused many users to feel undesirable and feel detached from their own natural faces. As Liquido, 2016 stated 'In one swipe, my face was transformed to standards that the fashion and beauty industry has been pushing for decades.' Despite this many would refer to filtered images of celebrities when showing surgeons the plastic surgery they want. Because of this "I got so carried away with how different they made me look that for a split second, I forgot what I look like’ (Olutoye, 2018: n.pag.) Users have become so blindsided and worried about getting that 'perfect look' that they begin to forget about their own features. Those behind the idea of Snapchat filters are to be held accountable as well. Snapchat has ‘its own agenda. It wants to flatter and persuade you to keep using it, but has no obligation to tell you the truth or take responsibility' (Arata 2016: n.pag.)
