THE NINE ARE THE PLANETS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM.

Xûr said that his movements are dependent on planetary alignments. The Nine are also very large, to which he couldn’t explain (and apologized). The Nine intend to help humanity and gave us purpose. They made us whole. “Bodies come and go, but only cells remember. And if we forget, the Nine remember for us.”

The only logical conclusion I can think of is that these are the planets themselves. Nine planets in our solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto). And they’re ancient beings that wish to help us, humanity. It’s the only thing that makes sense at the moment.
