Jiang Cheng continued, voice harsh, “Enough what? You think it’s enough just because you’ve said so? You know everything! You’re better than me in every way! Exceptionally gifted, a cultivation prodigy! With a pure heart and a luminous mind! You all know everything! I’m inferior—then what the hell am I?!?!”

Against the Odds {Part 16}
Warnings: Angst , Mention of violence, and Language
Ever since Lagertha’s shieldmaidens had Hvitserk locked up, you hadn’t visited him. The look he gave you before they took him away was still imprinted on your mind.
You were dreading seeing him again, that’s why you waited a whole day before visiting him. The shieldmaidens have been coming up to you saying that he was asking for you, but it only made you more nervous.
Today was the day you’d go to visit him. You wiped your clammy hands on your dress taking deep breaths.
You stood in front of the door that leads into the dungeons. Your body was frozen in unknown anticipation while your mind was working overtime.
You were responsible for the death of his mother, his wife, his people, and his unborn child. He wouldn’t act sweet to you as you’ve always known him to be. He was going to be angry, as he should be.
No doubt his brothers will want your head once they know. They all knew how Aslaug was, but she was still their mother at the end of the day. The one that scared you was Ivar.
He would no doubt be after you until he has the satisfaction of breaking you down then finally end your life, slowly of course. That’s just who Ivar was. His mother was the only person to understand him and love him.
At the moment you tried to think of Hvitserk instead of his brothers and what they’d do. That time is bound to come soon.
You nodded to one of the shieldmaidens for her to open the doors to the dungeon. You took a deep breath regaining your composure. As soon as you walked in, it was dark and quiet.
Hvitserk would be the only one in here. Lagertha only wanted him down here to calm down then she was going to release him. You wanted to see where he was at mentally by visiting, hoping you wouldn’t lose him for good.
You walked down seeing him in a corner of the dungeon looking down at his hands until he heard your approaching footsteps. He looked up at you with red tired eyes.
“Hi,” you said lowly, “Lagertha wants to release you as soon as we’re finished talking.”
Through his half-lidded eyes, he gave you an unamused look.
“Am I not a threat anymore now that my mother is dead?”
“That’s up to you.”
He moved to sit up, rattling his chains as he did so. His eyes remained fixated on you. They didn’t hold the same glint that you’ve grown accustomed to.
“Are you going to say anything?”
You felt yourself shifting under his scrutinizing gaze. You were never one that would become uncomfortable when he looks at you, but considering the circumstances, it did.
“Like what? How the love of my life betrayed me. Allowed the enemy to walk into Kattegat to kill my mother and for my love to kill my unborn child. The child that never got to take their first breath or even open their eyes to see the world around them.”
His words had hurt you. They made you feel guilty and responsible for the unborn child’s death. It wasn’t their fault that their mother was unstable.
“It was self-defense. She was coming after me and I’m sorry that at the time I wasn’t thinking about not hurting her because she was trying to kill me. If I hadn’t protected myself, it would be me who would be dead.”
“I told you I would’ve protected you.”
“No, at that moment you couldn’t have protected me. You were out there fighting while I was in here with her. I defended myself.”
“You didn’t need to bring Lagertha into this. You went behind my back and betrayed my trust. I feel as if my head and my heart are at war with one another.”
“You weren’t going to help me when you had other obligations. All you’ve done was argue with your mother with no real consequence. Katia would’ve been more likely the same. She wouldn’t have listened.”
“I was going to help you. Just under different conditions.”
“They would’ve killed me had I waited any longer.”
“You don’t know that,” he snapped.
“Yes, I do. You know better.”
He lifted his hands in the air rattling his chains.
“You got what you wanted, didn’t you?”
“It’s not what I wanted. It’s what needed to be done.”
You two going back and forth wasn’t going to help anybody.
“What needed to be done,” he repeated. He stood up going as far as his chains would allow him to. Hvitserk was in front of your face. You willed your body to stay still, ready for whatever he has to say.
“I fucking took you in! I’ve protected you. I loved you! Everything I’ve done was for you! My mother is dead because of you! My child is dead because of you! My brothers were right, I should’ve passed you around instead of defending you.”
You could feel your vision cloud with tears. They flowed down your cheeks faster than his words.
You looked down at the floor trying to regain your composure. Your heart laid heavy in your chest. You looked back into his angry eyes.
“I suppose your mother was right about her vision. I was a threat to the succession of your family. We faced challenges that would test our relationship. She said that I’d cause death. Guess she was right.”
“Yeah, spot on,” he gritted out.
“I’m sorry, Hvitserk, but I love you and our baby too much to take back what I did. Though you are also forgetting they’re responsible for other misfortunate events that have happened. I didn’t know the manner of death your mother would’ve been given. She never had your best interest at heart, no, that was always me. I’ll stay out of your way if that’s what you need.”
With that being said you turned your back to him, then stopped.
“Oh, your brother’s ships have been spotted. They’ll be arriving soon.”
You didn’t dare look back at him, afraid of what you might see. You hated seeing his look of pure anger directed towards you.
****
Like promised, Lagertha released Hvitserk from his chains and allowed him to greet his brothers when they docked. As soon as he explained the situation, all of the brothers stormed the great hall.
They heard what Lagertha had to say and were escorted to a room where it was guarded outside. You stood true to what you told Hvitserk and stayed out of his way, but there was one more thing you needed to do.
You needed to tell the brothers it was you who initiated all of this. They needed to be told the truth because even in the great hall, neither Hvitserk or Lagertha name dropped you.
You took a deep breath as two shieldmaidens escorted you inside with the brothers. Ubbe and Sigurd greeted you with relieved smiles. They were always cordial with you, especially since you carried their bloodline within you.
They each gave you a hug, besides Ivar. He was looking you over as if he knew you had done something.
“I don’t think any of you would’ve hugged me with what I’m about to say.”
You saw Hvitserk stand up from leaning against the wall.
“Y/N, don’t.”
It made your heart swell to see that he still somewhat cared.
“I have to tell you all the truth. I was the one that went to Lagertha to usurp your mother. I feared for my baby’s safety when she and Katia got together. You all know what they’re capable of. That’s all I want you to know.”
You watched Sigurd’s understanding face, Ubbe’s heavy sigh, and Ivar’s angry look. Hvitserk slowly rounded the table to stand by Ivar.
Ivar in his shaking fit of rage picked up a hidden blade in his sleeve going to throw it. Before he could even release it, Hvitserk grabbed a hold of his wrist disarming Ivar.
Hvitserk looked back at your wide eyes then to the shieldmaidens.
“Get her out of here!”
You were escorted outside the room as the brothers all looked at Ivar.
“She killed mother!”
“So what do you want to do about it?” Hvitserk asked harshly.
“We kill her,” Ivar stated, shrugging Hvitserk off of him. When he saw the immediate look from Hvitserk, he scoffed. He looked towards his other brothers, “are you with me brothers?”
Sigurd shook his head. “mother had it coming.”
Ivar tilted his head at Sigurd. He expected nothing less of him.
“What about you Ubbe? How do you feel?”
Ubbe had his hand rubbing his temples.
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“It’s obvious that mother wasn’t exactly a mother to us. I loved her, yeah, but I’m not so sure we should retaliate. You heard what Y/N had to say. She’s part of the family now and if she was doing it to protect herself and all of Kattegat, then who are we to change that.”
Ivar shook his head in anger.
“Worthless,” Ivar stated, he turned to look at Hvitserk, “come on brother, it’s always been you and I.”
“She carries my child.”
“So?”
Hvitserk walked up to Ivar crouching down to be eye level with him.
“She’s carrying MY child. I’m still in love with her despite what she did.”
“What if we wait until she gives birth? She’ll be weak then.”
“I’m not doing that! What part of I love her don’t you understand?! I don’t want to hurt her let alone be hurt by you.”
“Very well then. You’ve made your choice and I’ve made mine. My own brother doesn’t want vengeance for his mother. I must say I’m disappointed in you.”
“I was going to say the same to you, mama’s boy.”
Ivar scrunched his face in anger.
“Don’t be surprised when I cut your lovers belly and serve your child to you on a silver platter!”
