Duck face and other new words added to
Duck face and other new words added to
Duck face and other new words added to OxfordDictionaries.com
Try not to be jel, but some xlnt new words have gone into OxfordDictionaries.com in December’s mahoosive update. Whether you’re a shiny bum reading this while eating al desko or taking a break while you respawn, don’t be a keyboard warrior or say IDC – just sit back and enjoy the new words. Simples.
Slang and abbreviations
As usual, popular culture and slang have seen plenty of new additions in the Oxford Dictionaries update, including duck face, simples, choon, fone, handsy, xlnt, and Canadian tuxedo.
Want to describe how attractive you think someone is? This update sees the inclusion of the antonyms hawt (an informal respelling of hot). That person may even be your man crush (a ‘typically non-sexual liking or admiration felt by one man for another’) or someone who is your catnip; the word has long been another name for the catmint, but its effect on cats has led to the figurative sense ‘someone or something that is very attractive or appealing to a particular person or group’.
Several abbreviations have also been added, with their popularity growing partly due to the space-saving demands of social media. These include tomoz (‘tomorrow’), jel (‘jealous’), IDC (I don’t care), PMSL (p–ing myself laughing), WRT (with reference to), PMQs (Prime Minister’s Questions), and MAMIL (middle-aged man in Lycra, said of certain keen road cyclists). On the other hand, the term mahoosive offers an aptly longer version of the existing word massive, perhaps blended with a phonetic respelling of the first letters of huge.
The language of food is always a fruitful area for vocabulary, and additions include arancini, cavatelli, cappellacci, trofie, parm, queso, guanciale, izakaya, and food diary.
Of more interest to students everywhere, there is now an entry in OxfordDictionaries.com for the five-second rule: ‘a notional rule stating that food which has been dropped on the ground will still be uncontaminated with bacteria and therefore safe to eat if it is retrieved within five seconds’. Sadly the operative word in that definition is notional (‘existing as or based on a suggestion, estimate, or theory; not existing in reality’). A caution worth heeding is demonstrated by another addition: food-borne. The adjective is used of a disease, meaning ‘carried by or transmitted through contaminated food’.
More pleasantly, the term al desko has also been added – a play on al fresco (for food eaten outside, literally ‘in the fresh (air)’ in Italian), it is an adjective and adverb denoting food eaten ‘while working at one’s desk in an office’.
Games and technology
The world of technology has, unsurprisingly, provided new vocabulary for this quarter’s update – including camel case, SD card, soft key, digital footprint, keyboard warrior, and a new sense of fire hose (or firehose): no longer simply a hosepipe used to extinguish fires, this word also refers (in computing) to ‘an unfiltered, real-time stream of data produced by a social media website or other online service’.
Outdoor, indoor, and virtual games have all contributed terms to this update. Tiki-taka, total football, and pickleball have taken their place in OxfordDictionaries.com, as have respawn (of a character in a video game, ‘reappear after having been killed’), and permadeath (‘a situation in which a character in a video game cannot reappear after having been killed’). Then there’s park the bus in football (that is, soccer), meaning to ‘play in a very defensive way’. It is typically said of an away team, and comes from the metaphor of parking the team bus in front of the goal.
Perhaps the most amusing addition, and one indicative of the spirit of certain parts of the Internet, is lolcat (or LOLcat): ‘a photograph of a cat accompanied by a humorous caption written typically in a misspelled and grammatically incorrect version of English’ – from a combination of lol (‘laugh out loud’ or ‘laughing out loud’) and cat.
The opinions and other information contained in OxfordWords blog posts and comments do not necessarily reflect the opinions or positions of Oxford University Press.
December 3 / 2014
What do we love about new words?
The lexicographers at Oxford Dictionaries keep watch on our collective .
The Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year 2014 is ‘vape’
As 2014 draws to a close, it’s time to announce the Oxford .
You are far to quick to include words that you consider to be the latest ‘buzzwords’.
These will come and go and when they have gone you will look foolish.
The man on the ‘Clapham omnibus’ isn’t using them and hasn’t even heard of them.
You are simply clogging up the language with rubbish.
We can all get along by using basic simple English.
It’s time that we had an Academy like the French and Spanish to protect our language and prevent dross creeping in.
I agree; we really need to get back to basics. Let’s start with learning the difference between to, too and two.
All I can say is how thankful I am that Oxford Dictionaries waited until we had a mature, responsible, disciplined, perceptive, open-minded, and understanding population before what would otherwise be a cheap attempt to gain relevance among young, naive, reckless, irresponsible, self-absorbed and arrogant young people who may not grow to adulthood until well into their thirties (sadly, they think this is automatic at age 18, but this only has legal significance regarding what is expected; a well-known expression with a slight tweak does a good job showing the difference: if you call a child an adult, does that make him so? I’ll mention the chair, too: A chair has four legs. A dog has four legs. If I call a chair a dog, does that make it a dog? Similarly, if nation chooses a person to be president, but this person chooses to symbolically urinate on the document that defines this country, its government, and is the sole source of a president’s authority, thereby choosing to NOT fulfill the role of president, which is well-defined should any of this country’s “as long as I get what I want, who cares how” believers learn to read – and hopefully NOT using a dictionary from Oxford Dictionaries that has been amended with non-sensical words that, should these people use them in, say, a rational debate as opposed to an hysterical frenzy of insecurity, would be cause to postpone the debate until the group that cannot effectively communicate can find a representative who would likely teach this group new words like specious, spurious, and self-centered before telling the group that what it’s feeling is called humiliation, which can be avoided by the process named by another new word, thinking (specifically, of others, of one’s nation, of why a nation, a government should be made weaker or irrelevant and almost half of its population sentenced to 8 years of being ignored, insulted, and taunted by the person who was elected to be president but, since a president does not do the things this person does and – more importantly, this person deliberately or carelessly does not do the things that are defined as the duties and responsibilities of any person who is president
That’s just some brilliant satire right there.
Way to assist in the dumbing down of America. I weep for the future.
I wonder if Oxford Dictionaries has an entry for “drama queen.”
To stellabystarlite. It was just a hasty typo.(too hasty)
Looking at the other two posts, it would appear that the opinion was well received.
What a bag of weirdness. I read and use the Internet a lot and I’ve never even run across 2/3rds of these. I’m guessing that many of these are ephemera used in tweeting or similar special, informal use. And shabby chic is a trademark.
Scientists have asserted that there is some actual truth to the five-second rule that Oxford calls “notional”: Wikipedia mentions a 2006 study that showed that minute-long contact between food and floor increased contamination over a five-scond contact, about tenfold with tile and carpet surfaces (only).

As College Lacrosse Levels the Field, Its Former Powers Aren’t Cheering
SYRACUSE — Way up at the top of the Carrier Dome, a stream of national title banners serves as a reminder of the rich lacrosse tradition here. After long, cold winters in Central New York, the Syracuse Orange would win game after game, and a new banner would eventually rise.
But it’s been a while: A program with a record 22 straight Final Four appearances from 1983 to 2004 and 10 national titles hasn’t claimed the championship in a decade.
Syracuse is not alone. The last Orange championship in 2009 marked the end of an era for the Big Five powers of men’s college lacrosse: from 1978 until then, Syracuse, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, North Carolina and Virginia won every N.C.A.A. title; since then, they have won just two.
For decades, that handful of schools had a lock on the best recruits, many of whom grew up in the lacrosse hotbeds of New York State, Ontario and the regions surrounding Philadelphia and Baltimore. Native Americans from the Upstate Iroquois tribes who popularized the indigenous game once headed straight for Syracuse. But as it expanded far beyond its Mid-Atlantic base, the balance of power has shifted in college lacrosse, which remains the marquee version of the sport, outshining the pro game.
Four first-time champions have been crowned this decade — Duke, Loyola (Maryland), Denver and Yale — and top-ranked Penn State could become the fifth if it wins the N.C.A.A. tournament that begins Wednesday. The Nittany Lions have never won a tournament game before, and play in a lacrosse conference, the Big Ten, that didn’t even exist until four years ago.
“When I played, the best schools just reloaded,” said Casey Powell, a four-time Syracuse All-American and lacrosse evangelist who moved to Chicago last year to spread the game there. “Now there’s so many more players, where Johns Hopkins and Syracuse are still getting their bunch, but other schools can too. Syracuse’s exposure revolutionized the game and created a new era of lacrosse.”
Coaches, analysts and former players say parity has come primarily from the youth talent boom, as players from outside the traditional hotbeds look beyond the traditional powers. The sport was once rarely on TV and was played mostly in the East. Games are everywhere now: played by amateurs and professionals across the country and, increasingly, the world, and broadcast on TV and online, exposing the game to new audiences.
Lacrosse has been the fastest-growing U.S. team sport at the high school level for at least the past two decades, according to U.S. Lacrosse. The number of high school players doubled from 162,021 in 2006 to 324,689 in 2017. Players from California, Florida and the Midwest have created a more level playing field for schools like Denver, which became the first men’s Division I champion west of the Mississippi.
Denver Coach Bill Tierney, who won six national titles at Princeton, understands that other athletic departments may not be willing to pay for a burgeoning travel budget, a reality for a program with only two Division I competitors in the same time zone. He thinks his Pioneers’ title in 2015, coming relatively soon after the program launched in 1999, makes for a strong pitch: If Denver won quickly, why can’t another new program?
“In lacrosse, you can be like us and win a national championship as a mid-major,” Tierney said. “That’s not happening in football or basketball. We’re seeing more kids on other rosters from Colorado, and more of ours are from the Northeast. It’s like two trains passing in the night.”
Western athletic departments are considering converting club teams to intercollegiate squads, the way Utah got its start. David Neeleman, the JetBlue founder whose son plays on the team, donated the money needed to take Utah from a club team to Division I.
Because Neeleman attended the school as an undergraduate, because of his love for lacrosse, and because he wanted to help the game shift westward, he gave the Utes the financial boost needed to support a team. Coach Brian Holman said travel isn’t easy — players log homework and tutor sessions on long flights — but Utah won five games in its inaugural season this year. They expect more schools to join them.
“Part of why we came out here was based on that assumption,” said Holman, a former North Carolina assistant.
Meanwhile, the University of Jacksonville’s upstart program is the only men’s Division I team in Florida. The Dolphins are coached by John Galloway, a 30-year-old two-time national champion at Syracuse who played on its last title team. Now, he’s part of the wave that’s made it harder for a school like Syracuse dominate.
While the men’s game has swelled from 56 Division I teams in 2008 to 72 today, the women’s game has far outpaced it. Including six teams in the Pac-12 Conference, there are now 116 women’s Division I squads. Florida, Vanderbilt and Stanford have only women’s programs. Last year, Maryland, winner of three of the last five titles, was left out of the final as first-time champion James Madison beat Boston College, which was also vying for its first title.
Parity is approaching as women’s lacrosse marches westward. Take Michigan, where it became as a varsity sport in 2014. Led by Coach Hannah Nielsen, a four-time player of the year winner, the Wolverines are a Top 10 team this year, and made their first-ever N.C.A.A. tournament this week.
“There’s nothing better than the spread of the wealth in the college game,” Nielsen said. “Anybody can beat anybody. That never used to be the case. It makes the sport more fun to watch.”
Michigan is an anomaly in the men’s game: a Midwestern football power that is a newcomer to men’s lacrosse. That is due in part to Title IX, the 1972 federal law mandating gender equity in higher education, including college sports. Vast football squads, without any female equivalent, must be balanced with several women’s teams; creating a new men’s team only makes the math more difficult.
Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said that large donations would bolster the creation of new teams, and non-football schools are more likely to add men’s lacrosse than schools with football. For now, he says he realizes the best players still must consider going East to play collegiately. Aside from Utah, Denver and Air Force, no other Western programs have Division I men’s lacrosse.
This year, Syracuse again made the N.C.A.A. tournament, but as one of the last at-large teams in. Johns Hopkins and Maryland, another perennial contender, also barely made it in, while blue-chippers North Carolina and Cornell didn’t.
“There’s been a drought here,” said John Desko, in his 21st season as head coach at Syracuse. “I’m a little disappointed with it. But the last couple of years, with our recruiting, playing some younger players last year, we’ve made some strides. Anybody can win.”
Syracuse, which last made the men’s final in 2013, continues to draw the most fans in the country. But the sport’s exploding talent pool has made dozens of schools competitive. And what’s good for lacrosse has made life difficult for its once-dominant powers.
“With this drought, little kids don’t look up to Syracuse like I looked up to Syracuse,” said Paul Carcaterra, an ESPN college lacrosse analyst who helped lead the Orange to the 1995 national title. “One Final Four in 10 years is probably a hard thing to swallow for fans in Central New York. It’s no longer Syracuse, Johns Hopkins or bust.”

How Italian It Girls Get Their Glow
We get it. This time of year can cause serious travel envy, particularly if the closest you’ve got to a getaway lately has been viewing pap shots of Beyoncé sunning herself on a yacht in Capri. Or Kate Hudson indulging in a babymoon in vine-riddled Tuscany. But rather than swearing off Instagram and sulking into your prosecco, why not follow the example of those who epitomise la dolce vita — Italian Insta It girls like Chiara Ferragni and Margherita Missoni – and get a Mediterranean glow, minus the plane ticket? Author Carla Caruso has just released a novel, The Right Place, which draws on her Italian ancestry and is sprinkled with her mum’s traditional recipes. In undertaking the research, she discovered that la bella vita is about more than just picking the right resort; it’s a life choice. Carla talks us through getting the glow like your fave Italian Instagram beauties.
Image: Instagram @chiaraferragni
Image: Instagram @mmmargherita
PASS THE TOMATO JUICE
Lycopene isn’t a very sexy-sounding word, but, as the Italians know, it can provide much (saucy?) pleasure for your skin, hair and health. Where to find it? Probably right there in your fridge’s vegetable drawer: I’m talking tomatoes.
As this wonder nutrient can’t be manufactured by our bodies, it must be included in our diets. Some benefits? Lycopene can help lessen the effects of UV-induced skin damage, ageing and, amusingly, skin redness. A good daily intake can also promote hair growth, treat scalp-related issues, and reduce hair loss. To boot, it can act as a preventative measure against many serious disorders and diseases, including cancer. As Sophia Loren quipped, “Everything you see, I owe to pasta” (I’d add the tomato-y variety, in particular).
Funnily, while fresh tomatoes can easily deliver your daily lycopene requirement, when they’re cooked up in a sauce, soup or beyond, triple the lycopene is released. Little wonder skincare lines, like Yes To Tomatoes, use the potent antioxidant in their products too.
Image: Instagram @chiaraferragni
SIMPLE IS BEST
Forget veal scallopini. Traditionally, people in the Mediterranean eat red meat – and sweets – just two to three times a month, according to non-profit "real food" organisation Oldways. Fish, however, is conventionally eaten a whopping two to three times per week.
Seafood is naturally low in fat and cholesterol while punching above its weight in protein, vitamins, minerals, and lovely omega-3 fatty acids (the latter molto bene for your brain, heart, vision and more).
Also topping the Mediterranean diet pyramid: fresh produce (eaten in-season for added benefit), breads, grains and nuts. So, the next time you shop, stick to the perimeter of your supermarket to avoid processed foods. Or better yet, don a Missoni wrap dress and head to your local farmers market.
Image: Instagram @mmmargherita
GO SLOW
While this season’s Bachelor contestants are all about moving in fast-forward to win the heart of the Honey Badger, the Mediterranean set advocate sticking to the slow lane. Particularly at mealtimes.
Along with half an hour of exercise recommended daily, enjoying meals with others is also encouraged. Why? Because it means you’ll eat less – and likely, laugh more … the best medicine!
It’s well-documented that there’s a delay of about 15 minutes between the time you eat and when your brain registers you’re full.
So rather than eating al desko next work break, maybe tuck into your salmon bagel in the company of a colleague, or at least while reading a glossy (with the Honey Badger on the cover) in the lunchroom. And ensure you chew properly, too. Mid-meal, you can also take a break by downing a glass of water before attacking the rest of your plate.
Image: Instagram @chiaraferragni
CHEERS TO THAT
Chiara and co. get it right not only when it comes to foodstuffs, but fluids too. And what’s considered liquid gold? Olive oil. This is the healthy source that those bordering the Mediterranean Sea get most of their fats from. So swap-out kilojoule-laden butter – not often used in the Mediterranean lifestyle – for some olive-y goodness wherever possible. Dip torn-off bread into the oil, and drizzle it on your salad (with a squeeze of lemon) in place of shop-bought dressings.
In other things liquid: Mediterranean types aren’t afraid of throwing back a few cups of coffee per day either – a drink known to be rich in antioxidants and fibre, and beneficial in reducing the risk of common illnesses, depression and more. Plus, if you keep the grounds, you can add them to your DIY beauty arsenal as a face or cellulite scrub (mixed with brown sugar and olive oil). Or freeze any of the leftover beverage in an ice tray, and when you need to zap puffiness or dark circles, dab a cube under your eyes, wrapped in a muslin cloth.
Another trick to living like a Southern Italian or Greek islander? Daily moderate consumption of wine (two glasses for men and one for women) is considered A-okay for unwinding, if you so choose. Pass me a glass of some lipstick-red vino, Margherita.
