A beautiful day at Detroit Public Library! I stopped in to pick up my book on hold, and stayed for a while to check out “Encore” by Desiree Kelly. SO amazing.

Check out her exhibit until February 28th. There will also be a closing reception on February 21st!

“ABE IN SHADES”

Desiree Kelly

Unlike many street artists who work to navigate from the streets into galleries in an effort to make a living at their art, Detroit artist Desiree Kelly was introduced to oil painting while studying at Wayne State University and only began to extend her work from canvas to mural work in 2014. For this 42 ft wall in the Grand River Avenue Creative Corridor (GRCC) she did a version of her most recognized work—she has done several version of “Abe In Shades,” both on canvas in print, but also on numerous other walls around Detroit. Kelly has also painted numerous other recognizable figures in a variety of “shades” including Marilyn Monroe, JFK, and Stevie Wonder.  @desireekellyart
