Today is the fourteenth creative Q&A feature titled She Is QOTNC! Establishing her role in PR within the entertainment industry, Desiree “DC” Jordan is making a mark on music culture. Part of creative collective The Flight Crew, she pushes the envelope with vivid design visuals and advertisements. Working with iconic individuals who elevate new sounds, Desiree Jordan is here to stay. A woman with a voice, she represents strength, knowledge, and perseverance.

1. Who is Desiree “DC” Jordan?

I’m a young driven, ambitious, creative individual with an infectious altruistic spirit. Originally from San Diego, CA, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my career in becoming a brand/content manager for national entertainment brands. Over my college career, I’ve had the opportunity to work with companies such as Muse Lifestyle Group, Live Nation, Black & Sexy TV, etc. who have managed a part of the growth in the careers of some of the most interesting names in entertainment such as Ariana Grande, One Direction, Florence & The Machine, The NBHD, J. Cole, Ashley Blaine Featherson, Andra Fuller, Tiesto, and even Jay Z (yes, thee Jay Z...but from a huge distance) But hey, every little bit’ of effort you have in the process counts right?

2. What is The Flight Crew?

If I had to speak for everyone, I’d believe everyone would say were a collective of quirky, social savvy individuals who specialize in ensuring the turbulence in your life doesn’t interrupt the creativity in your flights. In other words, we create a variety of interactive campaigns with clients by adding our creative edge on modern design. Our group began to formulate over my college career from many nights over pop culture debates and random Yelp food missions. We also distribute music in a very unique way that captures those inquisitive minds searching for a quick escape.

3. In a culture where women are marginalized/misrepresented, how do you maintain your feminine edge?

Sometimes I tell my friends that I’m “living my 30’s in my 20’s”. What I’m referencing is the abundance of knowledge that I possess now from having to grow and adjust to the environment around me at a very young age. Because my mother had me in her mid 40’s, she gave me intuition and wisdom, and the environment that I was being raised in gave me versatility, chameleon-like abilities. These three components is what helps me maintain my feminine edge. I work in an industry where the majority of my colleagues view women as pawns, and i think maintaining my feminine edge gives me also a competitive one.

4. How did your environment influence your musical palette?

I was raised by a mother who was a background singer for Gladys Knight and The Pips. So, imagine being carried on your mother’s hip as a baby through tour rehearsals, curiously peeking through your cousins door hearing him rock out to Prince in your early teens, and getting hundreds on DM’s on Myspace begging to get deets on songs featured on my Myspace profile in the mid 00’s. The versatility in my environment growing up lead me to pursuing a career in music and entertainment and I to be honest, I can’t see myself doing anything else.

5. Which song/art piece do you identify with?

Hmmm, that’s a tough one. At this time in my life, I can say that I truly identify with Sobriety by TDE lyricist, SZA. The tone is dark, but also has high melodic moments which represents the ups and downs in my daily battle with making wiser decisions in business and my personal life. Words like ““Love will stunt your growth, love will make it hard to stay sober...I’mma be fine anyway….” which can translate in my relentless passion for becoming the best at what I do even with the underlying risk of failure.

6. Who or what inspires you as a creative?

Perfectly imperfect perfection. I’m human, and I embrace it. Freedom of expression also inspires me because behind closed doors, I’m politically incorrect. Some of my muses are Pharrell, Beyonce, Childish Gambino, and Keke Palmer. Each of them represent a change in our culture that has been derived from the little nuances of collective intelligence between people. Culture is a learned behavior and something that we practice throughout our daily lives and I try to emulate their ability to think differently and empower the next generation of creative minds to do the same.

7. In terms of music formats, Vinyl or Digital?

Ahhh! The great debate. Hmmm, I don’t think I could choose one without someone in my crew taking my head off for it! But to be fair, I would say it depends on my mood. My weekends usually consist of my MacBook, SoundCloud, and some fly ass toe socks.

8. Who are your top 5 Women in music?

I’d never be able to choose a Top 5, but i’d list them as if this were starring in my version of Pitch Perfect 3. Lets do this!

9. What are your top 3 books you recommend?

Nervous by Zane Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger

10. What does your creative process consists of?

Headphones on. World off.

11. What is your favorite record of all time?

Love Bomb by N.E.R.D

12. What's your favorite sample & why?

Hmmm, i’d have to say the Grindin’ beat by Clipse. In middle school, they’d ask me to drop a beat, and I’d grab a pencil and pen and the rest is history - well, in better words...HERstory.

13. Is there a particular album/mixtape that fuels your creativity? 

Nope. I’m all about living for creating new moments. My creativity is always fueled by my mood and environment. When I share music, I’m in the pilot seat and I’m constantly thinking about what type of experience i’m creating for the passenger in my flight. Whether it’s sparked by the sound of ongoing traffic, laughter from afar, simple human interaction, those are just my “soundsinthecabin” and I leave room in my feed for your imagination to fill in the open space.

14. What is your spirit animal?

Probably a unicorn. They’re only real to those who believe in magic. And you know they say, “a creative adult is a child who survived”.

15. Most valuable lessons you evolved from? 

“You can either win or learn, never lose.” I’ve made many mistakes in the past, but I have no regrets with the lessons that i’ve been able to learn and grow from.

16. What's your dream project/dream collaboration?

Probably Daft Punk, Gorillaz and probably Yukumi from Little Dragon for the lead vocals. I think they’d make a beautiful album to heal the hearts of the scorned and hatred spreading around the world. And that’s just what WE ALL need right now.

17. How has your educational background help shape your creativity in your professional life?

I believe it gave me a “social right” to speak from a position of reason and logic. I can build campaigns for clients using a way to leverage their creativity and also monetize their social wealth. Left brain activate! Dun duh dunnn.

18. Advice for young women in the PR/Digital Media World?

Become an expert at many things. But master one - The art of focus.  When I find something I’m feelin’, I run with it leaving a trail of unfinished Picasso's. Gets me somewhere, but might not be where I originally envisioned. Not always good.

Be your best supporter, and worst critic. Find a balance. Be ready to wake up to a new day full of ambiguity and seize the next opportunity to become a better you. You have to believe that the energy you put in, is what you’ll receive and hopefully more, never less.

Remain true to yourself. And if you don’t know exactly who “you” are yet, then you should be excited. Growing up, I was made fun of by the music I listened to, my views on the state of our society, even the color of my skin, you name it. Pretending to be something or someone else is soooo exhausting. I mean, think about it. What’s more fun than finding out new things about yourself you thought you’d never discover?

19. What’s the next chapter for you?

Continue to leave breadcrumbs for the dreamers of today’s tomorrow.

20. How would you define yourself as a #QOTNC?

I would define myself as a Quirky, Optimistic, Tech-savvy, Neutral, & Cultivator.
