An Eclectically Curious Home

Bait YSG is the home of interior designer Yasmine Saleh Ghoniem, and is an exploration of light, colour and texture. The apartment is located in the backstreets of Bondi, Sydney, and is nestled inside a red brick art deco building.

Throughout the apartment, a calming creamy foundation sets the scene and allows each of the displayed elements to have their own space, without the need to compete. Layers of olive green, peach, salmon and turmeric are the focus and through their own earth tones create a unique connection to nature and the owner’s partial roots in the Middle East. Like the stories each item harbours, materiality has been selected to capture patina over time and to allow that expression of time to occur within the space as well.

This gorgeous home is a refreshing reminder that mere brick and mortar does not constitute a home. Our homes reflect memories and the stories of our truest selves. It becomes an extension of a dedicated life, surrounded by contrast and vibrancy along with things we hold dear to our hearts - regardless of how big or small, luxurious or thrifty the space.

Friday’s Impression: All the Shades

This week I was able to enjoy the daily black and white posts of my designer and photographer friend, Linda Holt. Her beautiful captures have always inspired me. For this reason, I passed the black and white photography challenge to her. It was my turn last week to post one black and white photo of my day-to-day life on Facebook. No words are required for this exercise; just the simplicity and purity of the black and white capture.  

So each day my talented friend would post another thought-provoking image. The subject matter wasn’t always immediately recognizable. Some images required a bit of analyzing in order to see what was being depicted. Partially, I suppose, it was because the eye turned first to the beauty in contrast or the subtle variations in texture or line. All was so singularly beautiful. 

What first appeared to be a swarm of insects in the sky, was actually the random sprays of fallen grasses and sticks in a pool of water. It’s amazing how a black and white photo can trick the eye and, with that, bring clarity. We see the essence of the image first. No distractions. 

Line can be highly defined and then fade into the background. 

Stories are told through items that show movement long after they’ve been touched. 

Iconic architecture shows its strength in structure and integrity through a silvered tarnished facade. 

Folded white paper suspended from a black string becomes gallery-worthy. I was most taken by the shadow play on the slightly mottled wall. 

Only in black and white, can one see all the shades, purest form, and movement that speaks of harmony. 

It leaves a lasting impression.

Ineke Hans designs industrial furniture and products, as well as handmade objects for leading manufacturers. She aims for a more social and active approach on design and has designed products for the Fogo Island Inn and People of the Sun.

📌The club is composed of a series of straight metal jali panels that resemble the shape and texture of feathers, creating a dynamic and cuboid facade that contrasts with the rigid geometry of the surrounding buildings.✨

📌The entry gate is also designed with a similar motif, featuring a large straight shape canopy that provides shade and shelter for the visitors. The feather concept reflects the vision of Township as a place that offers comfort, beauty and harmony to its residents.✨

Character Building

It’s a living and breathing soul, after all. Just as the people who live within its walls, a home builds character through experience and the layers of life’s joys and sorrows. 

Accomplishments walk through the doors and settle on mantles and shelves. Light and shadow playfully dance through paned windows so that profiles in plaster can show us their best side.

 And the heirlooms shine with all their lovely imperfections. 

This is a character that develops over time. It changes and continues to grow, learn, and then subside into the niches. The old and the new exist in perfectly paired harmony. One really can’t be certain what came first. I love to pull out the fine china, the slightly tarnished silverware, and crisp white linens. I love to bring them together with modern sculpture and an artistic vase from today’s gallery that looks as though it was crafted centuries ago.

The collections are random and uncalculated because they come from moments and places that offer them to us in precious little doses. There’s nothing quite so beautiful than the hand-blown glass of another time. Connect the clear swirls of a few and the delicate ensemble becomes a strong statement of artisanal integrity juxtaposed against a modern lamp. 

Memories, etchings of architecture and simple sculpture. These are the meant-to-be treasures that sit on an inherited piece. Old and untouched, its nicks, mars, and hardware of aged patina are beautiful and grounding. 

The small details can outshine the grandest features. These are the things that intrigue and show true character. Grooved and beaded turns in polished nickel act like jeweled fastenings on classic door fronts. 

A refined architectural backdrop with history as its grounding is strong and timeless. It has such character that it graciously allows all to sparkle around it.

Bold, creative strokes of artist’s hands turn walls into colorful galleries. They have stories to tell. 

Music fills a room and fine lacy weaves perform in tandem with the graceful turns of tulips in clear vases.

And the character is deep and insightful and earned.
