Some identifiers for AI generated fashion images that I've noticed
So, recently and not unexpectedly, I've seen a major uptick in AI generated images showing up in my searches for fashion photos, specifically. I've seen people make posts like this for specific art styles, and for 2D art in general, but I wanted to share some observations I made regarding clothing, fashion, and runways. I've seen a lot of people getting fooled by these, but it seems like for every one person thinking it's real there's about three people informing them that it's AI, fortunately. I'll admit, a lot of them look somewhat believable at first, but once you look closer it becomes apparent that they're off somehow.
To clarify: this is about common inconsistencies I've personally noticed in AI fashion images, so that you can learn where to look for these and similar inconsistencies and avoid sharing AI content by accident.
There's this one "collection" specifically that seems to come up a lot (also, click on all these images in this post to see the details more clearly):
There's more images like this and yes, despite the "houseofai" watermark I still see people asking who the designer is, or saying that they genuinely thought it was real at first. First and foremost: these are all clearly meant to be from the same runway show, right? Then why does each image look like it was taken on a different runway? The lighting and coloring are different in each one, and the middle one has vague red stairs in the background while the other two look like just a plain light-colored runway. This is something you'll obviously only be able to notice in groups of images and not singular ones, but it's a pretty dead giveaway if you see it.
Secondly: AI generated images, as a whole, tend to have this specific kind of super dramatic lighting with very bright, white lights and soft grey shadows. I'm not very knowledgeable about photography, so I can't explain it exactly, but I know it when I see it (and if someone reading this can properly explain it , please do.)
Thirdly: AI generated fashion tends to attempt perfect symmetry, but always fails somehow.
As for the actual outfits: the best that I can describe it is that a lot of the shapes and patterns just don't look like intentional human choices.
What in the hell is that monogram on the upper right supposed to be? It's clearly mimicking a logo of some kind, but it's messy and indecipherable, not actual branding.
The heart motif is clearly the running theme here, but the hearts don't really make sense. Like the main one in two halves across the chest here: why does it have those two notches missing at the bottom that prevent it from coming to a point at the bottom like a heart is supposed to?
The bottom hem is way longer on the left than on the right.
The little shoulder hearts are like, bleeding into the shoulder seams; those lines in the hair look like they're supposed to be headbands, but they disappear at the part with the rest of the hair; the embroidery on the pants isn't in a clear or intentional pattern.
Again, compare the lighting on this one's neck with the lighting on the last one's neck, totally different.
Those pink things on the chest look like they're trying to be hearts, but they're so clearly not actually hearts. If your collection is heart themed, why aren't you using actual hearts?
The quilting effect is uneven and the individual lines don't follow through and finish in the places they should. Look at the upper right sleeve, where the diamonds are misshapen and the diagonal lines are clearly disconnected. On the lower right chest, the lines just disappear. This can't actually with quilted garments IRL because the top layer is literally stitched to the bottom one along those lines with material in between. It can't fuck up like that, especially not a designer garment that costs your monthly rent.
Smooth zipper. Zippers seem to be a common fuck up.
You can't read the text on the hearts. It's nonsense. Nonsense, unreadable text and fucked up hands are the absolutely surefire ways to identify AI art like this. Conveniently, there are no hands in these photos.
What are those embossed shapes on the sleeves? They're not identifiable as anything in particular.
That is not how zippers work.
I suppose that weird folding beneath the hearts is something technically physically possible. But it's much, much more likely that they would create smoother, less ugly seams with less excess fabric.
These generative AI programs don't actually comprehend what they're trying to depict. Thus, they make mistakes like these. Physical inconsistencies that are often totally impossible, but even the possible things are just... stupid choices that an actual designer isn't going to do. Yeah, sure, designs can be weird, asymmetrical, and imperfect on purpose. But it's way, way more likely that this is just an AI.
Experiment: look at these two images of retro-futuristic headpieces/eyewear and determine whether they're real or AI.
Right one is easy, mostly because of the wonky bitch in the back. But some other inconsistencies I specifically wanna note: if the blue goggles color the "model"'s skin, hair, helmet, and the background behind the lenses blue, why doesn't it do the same for the eyes? And also, I've noticed that a lot of these images have trouble properly rendering the corners of the mouth, which is a weird detail but one you won't be able to unsee once you know to look out for it. Yes, there's a dark line where actual human lips meet, often with some subtle divots at the corners, but in the image on the right, it's rendered as a harsh, gaping hole more like something sculpted out of plastic than actual flesh. On the note of imperfect symmetry again: the left lens isn't perfectly round. And finally, this is a really good example of that giveaway lighting I mentioned. I don't know how you would actually achieve that lighting IRL, but it's so, so common in AI images.
The left photo is an actual model in 1967 wearing pieces designed by Pierre Cardin, a designer that the right image is definitely trying to emulate. The model has a look on her face that isn't super duper expressive, but it's still far beyond any of the AI images I've seen. Every AI fashion image I've seen thus far has totally blank-faced, expressionless "models". They might pout slightly, but I haven't seen any with visible teeth. Something tells me the AI would render teeth the same way it renders fingers. The emblem on the hat is actually perfectly symmetrical, and the glasses are clearly asymmetrical as an intentional design choice, not like the shapes are supposed to be the same but got messed up somehow. And she has ten fingers total, five on each hand.
Two more:
These are both AI generated. I'm not gonna lie, i fell for the one on the left at first. The right is easy:
distorted faces
woman in back is being absorbed by the train(?) seat
those middle buttons on the jacket are totally useless
AI Lighting (TM)
But the "models" on the left look very, very convincing, and the lighting doesn't immediately register to me as AI lighting. The only really wonky thing on the faces is the mouth on the left "model". However, there's one dead giveaway: the headphone wires. Why are they different thicknesses? Why does the rightmost wire disappear into the jacket sleeve? Where the fuck does the leftmost wire even go? AI, I've noticed, struggles with thin lines, strings, and strands of things. Like with the quilted jacket above, you can often try and trace a single line, only to find that it drops off, distorts, or disappears. And sure enough, as soon as I noticed something was weird with those wires, I went to the Pinterest profile that posted it and found that they exclusively posted AI content. Speaking of the actual headphones, the leftmost ear cushion is sitting on an angle that doesn't make sense, and the one to the direct right of it is significantly thinner than the other three. Again, subtle failed symmetry.
This is by no means a comprehensive guide, and I encourage anyone seeing this to point out ways they've found to identify AI images like this. These are things I've just been on the lookout for lately. And when in doubt: conduct reverse image searches and try your best to identify solid sources for your images. AI images won't list designers, model names, photographers, stylists, makeup artists, etc., while actual runway and photoshoot images will, because there are human creatives behind them.
#posting this to my least active blog rather than my fashion one so that less notes will overwhelm that blog's notifications#ai#psa#long post

A Thorough Analysis of Ai Yazawa's NANA
"The dreams we are chasing and the reality that is chasing us are always parallel; they never meet."
Nana is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Ai Yazawa. The story set in Tokyo, revolves around two 20 year-old women with the same given name - "Nana".
Nana Komatsu Nana Osaki
Nana Osaki, an independent, ambitious, and outspoken woman, meets a naive, dependent, and talkative Nana Komatsu (often referred to as Hachi) when she moves to Tokyo after turning twenty. Although they are completely opposite in terms of character and personality, they share a common goal: to discover themselves and the true meaning of love and happiness.
Storytelling and Compelling Characters
At its core, "Nana" encompasses dynamics of human relationships, exploring themes such as identity, sacrifice, and aspirations or dreams. What sets it apart from other shoujo manga or anime is the complexity of each character in the story. As a 13-year-old, I was surprised by the depth of humanity portrayed in the characters. Yazawa presented the audience with a set of characters navigating difficult situations with utmost honesty, avoiding any romanticized portrayal which makes it relatable for young adults going through their own transformations.
Art Style
Aside from the story itself, Ai Yazawa skillfully renders emotions through subtle facial expressions and body language allowing readers to connect with the characters on an emotional basis, adding narrative depth. Her precise linework, expressive character designs, and intricate attention to details makes her work standout and enough reason to be a source of inspiration for others (including myself).
Yazawa seeks inspiration through a variety of sources, including fashion, music and pop culture. She adorns her characters with outfits and hairstyles, reflecting the trends and subcultures of contemporary Japanese society. She draws inspiration from her own life experiences and observations, reflecting her love for music, through depictions of concerts, recording studios and backstage interactions.
Fashion in Nana: Vivienne Westwood
The distinct personalities of Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu shine through their contrasting clothing styles: one punk and edgy, the other casual and feminine. It is evident that fashion plays an important secondary role in the stylistic choices. Despite dropping out of fashion school, Yazawa draws on her industry knowledge to skillfully convey her characters' emotions through clothing in her work.
Nana Osaki wearing Vivienne Westwood's "Armour Ring"
Nana is heavily influenced by Vivienne Westwood. The logo, also known as The Orb of Vivienne Westwood, is a combination of Saturn's rings and the sovereign orb of the English monarchy, and is one of the brand's most memorable elements. The symbol of Nana Osaki's rebellious nature is evident throughout "Nana," notably in the first episode where she wears the "Armour Ring." This accessory reflects her desire for protection from the challenges of the external world, setting the tone for her character's personality.
Nana Osaki wearing Vivienne Westwood Fall 1994
Nana Osaki wearing Vivienne Westwood's 'Super Elevated Gillie'
Nana Osaki's wardrobe is predominantly filled with pieces from Vivienne Westwood, showcasing her strong connection to the punk community. She often reuses and styles these pieces in various iconic ways, serving as an inspiration for self-expression through fashion choices.
Ren Honjo: An Imitation of Sid from Sex Pistol
Ren Honjo and Nana Osaki
Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen
Nana Osaki and Ren Honjo are often compared to the infamous couple Sid Vicious from Sex Pistols and Nancy Spungen. Ren's intense love for Nana mirrors Sid's obsession with Nancy. Additionally, Ren's fashion choices, such as his leather jacket and padlock necklaces, are reminiscent of Sid's style, as Vivienne Westwood designed pieces with Sid in mind. Malcolm McLaren, Westwood's partner and Sex Pistols manager, emphasizes this connection even more.
Ren Honjo Sid Vicious
Despite the intensity of Nana Osaki and Ren Honjo's relationship, Yazawa carefully avoids romanticizing their obsession through portraying their love as an unhealthy codependency.
Nana Komatsu: Personality and Style always changing
Nana Komatsu dressed in outfits reflecting the dream/ career she is chasing
Nana Komatsu, known by the nickname Hachi, is a typical Shoujo female character who lives a conventional life and is always looking for validation from her romantic partners. She often wears pastel-tones housewife-inspired dresses, reflecting her femininity and desire for male approval. She lacks ambitions and often changes jobs and wardrobe to become independent. Hachi's fashion sense evolves, reflecting her changing personality. She initially embraces a 70s bohemian art style in art school, then adopts Vivienne Westwood jewelry to fit in with Osaki and her bandmates. Hachi's style draws from Mori and Gyaru subcultures.
Final Thoughts
Whether exploring themes of love, friendship, or personal growth, Ai Yazawa's art serves as a powerful medium for storytelling, capturing the nuances of human emotions and relationships with honesty and authenticity. Yazawa inspires others to create something new and special from their own experiences. She does this with precision and patience.

Most people by this point are familiar with the wild brand names that have flooded Amazon. You can find out more about why so many brands (or "pseudo-brands) have these bizarre looking names in this Slash Gear article or this YouTube video from Lean Media.
But I wanna talk about logos. Because I saw this ad here on Tumblr and did a double-take:
Not because the brand name WAQONUY stood out as particularly unusual amidst the many, many unpronounceable allcaps brand names, but because it has a logo.
And as a digital design teacher who has a strict policy against using images from commercial stock sites, something stuck out to me immediately.
There are criss-crossed lines on several of the letters that look suspiciously like watermarks. But they aren't consistent enough to have been lifted whole cloth. No, there's another layer to this.
This logo must be AI generated. It has all the tell-tale signs of it. The strange watermark-esque markings are consistent only across letters with similar shapes are a clear sign that stock logos with watermarks like this:
still on them have been scraped and fed into the generator.
Letters like W and Y that ahould have perfect symmetry are both cropped off at either side for no reason. And the logomark design is...well it's pretty bad, even beyond the weird crossing lines. No designer in their right mind would allow tangents like that. The balance is atrocious. Etc etc.
So now that I'm certain the logo is AI generated I have a new hypothesis about this brand: I think they generated the logo first and took their brand name from whatever result created the most legible Roman letters. Now they have a "real logo" and a unique "brand" name and all they had to do was run a pointless resource intensive algorithm to get it.
The only way to really know is if the brand gets big, like Anker (see the above YT video for more on that) and then has to actually do legit branding. But the odds of that are slim to none. The products they are selling are not as universally sought after as Anker (if you've ever bought a power bank or battery pack from AMZN it was probably Anker brand). Most likely they'll just exist until they get replaced by the next pseudo-brand.
And they most certainly know this is the case, which is exactly why they turned to genAI for their branding. A fake logo for a fake brand. A waste of energy and resources for...well, a waste of energy and resources.
#ramblings#just text today lads#ai is a plague#it is even less than “not art” it is “not anything”#disposable trash#and even the companies using it know that

I hate to be the "well akshually" person, but as much as I would like to blame Mattel for this, this likely is not their fault for an assortment of reasons.
It's important to take a few things into account here:
1) Toys, and dolls in particular, have potentially the longest development process in all of licensing. This has to do both with where the toys are manufactured (because toys are shipped via container ship and take 6+ months to arrive to retailers) and also because sculpting likenesses, bodies, and accessories, tooling those items, distilling the clothing textiles and patterns into doll forms, and then receiving approval on all the aforementioned from both the studios and actors involved.
2) Mattel's usage of AI is for box art *only* at this time. They use Adobe Firefly, which as of this writing (11/13/24) does not generate text.
3) Due to NDAs, the packaging design for the Wicked dolls would almost certainly have to be done by humans because licensor agreements would not let them feed those assets into an AI due to the potential for leaks.
4) Because the AI they use only handles graphics, the text, logos, contact information, legalese, etc would have had to be put into place by a human. Templates may have been setup and used, but the information would still need to be input by a human.
5) This is probably the biggest factor of it all, Universal would have provided that information, including Universal's copyright information, URLs, etc to Mattel along with the branding and identity kit once they had reached a licensing agreement. Upon accepting, Mattel would have received branding guides, logo files, font packs, etc to allow them to move forward with the packaging design stage.
So this is speculation on my part, but as a graphic designer I think this is the most likely thing that happened:
• Universal provided all the information and assets to Mattel with an intent to secure the URL.
• Mattel does the packaging design, goes through revisions, and receives design approval from Universal.
• Mattel fills in all of the aforementioned text, legalese, contact info, etc and requests final approval from Universal (this also probably involved a physical proof of some sort so that Universal's marketing team could verify all of the printed information).
• Universal approves, meanwhile forgetting to secure the wicked.com URL, and packaging production gets underway.
So this is likely an oversight on Universal's part, and the marketing team forgot to secure it (or provide an updated URL to Mattel prior to production) during the year or more before the dolls reached retailers.
It is important I recognize the last bit is speculation on my part, but as a graphic designer who is familiar with doll production timelines and has seen some pretty wild things get approved and produced, this is the most likely scenario I could see happening. (I once saw a customer, unknowningly to us at the time because we were using the information provided, approve their competitors phone number on their graphics. This only came to our attention *months* later when the customer called to get replacement phone numbers after mentioning they incorrectly approved the wrong phone number.)
The TL;DR/main takeaway from all of this is that this it is highly unlikely this is Mattel's fault largely because that information would have been provided by Universal and also because verifying the information provided, especially extremely early in the design process, when that information wouldn't be public knowledge, much less readily available to verify, isn't the responsibility of Mattel and isn't the result of AI.
Wicked dolls by Mattel have the wrong website of the film printed on the packaging which directs you to an adult film website.

6 Proven Strategies to Outshine Competitors as a Startup
The startup environment is more packed and competitive than ever. In 2023, a remarkable 5.5 million new businesses were launched, setting a record for entrepreneurial activity. In this busy market, just starting a business isn't sufficient; startups need to implement unique and active strategies to establish themselves and succeed.
This article explores six essential strategies that can help your startup not just survive but also excel in this crowded space. From improving fundamental operational processes to utilizing advanced technologies for engaging customers, these approaches are designed to lift your startup above its rivals and achieve lasting success in a continuously changing environment.
Perfect Your Inventory Management
Good stock handling is essential—it can lift a new business to success or plunge it into disorder. Say you run an apparel store; using dedicated clothing inventory management software can significantly smooth out your operations.
This system tracks your stock in real-time, makes sure popular items are always available, and spots the underperformers. As a result, you cut down on excess and boost your profits, all while keeping your processes sleek and better aligned with what your customers want.
Leverage Technology for Customer Engagement
In the current business landscape, it's crucial for new companies to not just contact their customers but also to connect with them significantly. Embracing new tech can transform your interactions with your audience.
Incorporating sophisticated customer relationship management systems, mobile apps, or AI-powered chat services enables your business to deliver tailored experiences that truly impact customers. This direct interaction builds a stronger bond and loyalty, crucial advantages in a competitive environment where customers face an overload of options.
Develop a Strong Brand Identity
Creating a solid brand identity is crucial to differentiate your startup from the competition. Your brand should have a distinct voice and look that truly reflects your mission and connects with your target market. A well-defined brand identity makes your products or services stand out, giving you an edge in customer preference.
Effective branding goes beyond logos and color palettes; it involves consistently delivering your startup’s values and objectives across all customer interactions, which makes your company memorable. Furthermore, a unified brand identity enhances marketing efforts by ensuring consistent messages across all platforms, bolstering your position in the market. It also conveys reliability and professionalism, attracting potential investors and partners essential for your expansion.
Focus on Niche Markets
Aiming for a particular market segment can significantly limit the amount of direct rivals and boost your startup’s potential for success. When your startup zeroes in on a specific market segment, it can address unique customer demands that big companies might ignore. This targeted strategy not only sharpens your expertise in your chosen field but also attracts a loyal customer group who appreciate your deep knowledge and customized products or services.
By emerging as a leader in your market segment, your startup becomes the primary choice for customers, which lessens competition and strengthens customer loyalty. Further, excelling in a specific area allows you to use your resources more effectively, concentrating on key aspects that heighten customer satisfaction and keep them coming back. It also encourages innovation among your team members, as they gain in-depth understanding of the market and can quickly identify and respond to upcoming trends before they hit the mainstream.
Implement Agile Practices
Implementing agile practices revolutionizes the game for startups aiming to maintain a competitive edge in fast-paced markets. These methodologies enable teams to swiftly adjust to market changes and customer feedback. This flexibility is crucial for rapidly refining products and services, often resulting in improved outcomes that meet market needs.
Furthermore, agile practices foster team collaboration and productivity, facilitating faster iterations and innovations. This cycle of constant improvement not only keeps startups relevant but also positions them ahead of competitors who might lag in responding to market dynamics.
Build Strategic Partnerships
Developing strategic alliances is a potent tactic to enhance your startup’s competitive advantage. Collaborating with other firms can broaden your market presence and grant access to extra resources. These partnerships can bring fresh technological perspectives, widen distribution networks, or create opportunities for joint promotions.
Each alliance boosts your abilities and introduces new paths for expansion that would be difficult to pursue alone. By aligning with other entities, your startup can mitigate risks and capitalize on shared expertise, which can make it more challenging for competitors to match your progress.
Final Thoughts
To outperform competitors, you need a smart mix of forward-thinking strategies, creative solutions, and persistent effort. Sharpen your control over inventory, use technology to enhance interaction with customers, carve out a clear brand identity, zero in on specific market segments, adopt flexible operational methods, and forge meaningful alliances. These steps don't just make your startup noticeable—they lay the groundwork for long-term achievement.
Put these tactics into action with commitment, and your startup won't just hold its own—it will flourish in the competitive environment we see today. Start applying these approaches now, and see your startup soar past its competitors.

How to create a streetwear brand?
Many streetwear brands out there have an origin and story behind them, they don't just come out of the blue. These brands usually have a history, a core theme or meaning behind them. For example, Supreme is a skateboarding brand created in America, NYC. They’re known for their box logo T-shirt which holds weight in the streetwear scene as a popular item of clothing. Another example would be, Palace from London – also a skateboarding brand, in competition with Supreme. Carhartt, on the other hand, is known as a workwear brand who make their clothing to suit builders and workmen. However, like most clothing brands, Carhartt pieces have also become a part of the streetwear scene. Same with the brand, Stussy, they started off as a surf brand but gradually made their way into the streetwear scene. The point is, any brand can become part of the streetwear culture if the demand is high enough.
The name is a very crucial part of owning a clothing brand. It’s what people will see and remember you by. It is possible to rebrand your name down the line, however that can be costly, time consuming and reduce brand awareness. So, think wisely when picking a name! Avoid making the name too personal or cliché – generic names will not help your brand stand out. Using AI to generate names is also something I would discourage. The results won’t be unique to you and someone else could end up with the same name. You must also make sure you are looking out for other brands and companies who share the same name as you as you may end up facing issues with buying rights to use the name. If another company and you share the same name, it is possible for you to keep it if both brands are selling completely different goods. You can visit the government website, gov.uk for more information on how to register your name and protect your brand.
There are many programs out there to help you get started with the fundamentals of designs and creating designs for your brand, whether it is for your website, social media or for the designs on your clothing pieces. The Adobe Creative Cloud is the perfect place to start as it has a variety of programs to choose from. Adobe Illustrator is a program which is used to create vector graphics like logos. You can use this software to create your tech-packs, posters, and illustrations, however you will be limited to vector-based outcomes. You cannot use it for image manipulation which is something Photoshop offers. Photoshop would be a great software to use for your clothing designs and social media posts, but I wouldn't recommend it for logos. AfterEffects and PremierePro are great editing programs you can use to edit promo videos, short films, and animations for your brand. And lastly, LightRoom – this software can be used to edit your photography for things like look books, website content, and social media posts. There’s a lot of free alternatives on the market such as Affinity Designer, Canva and Kittle that you can use to achieve similar results. You also have the option to hire a designer to help create different parts of your brand. A professional and experienced designer can create logos and designs; an identity to help your brand stand out. So, making sure you hire a designer you can trust is important.
There are many types of print methods and embroidery methods for clothing brands but for a start I'd recommend either vinyl, heat transfer or screen printing. Screen printing, from my knowledge, is more reliable when done correctly. However, the process can be long and challenging. Vinyl or heat transfer is a bit risky because if it's not done correctly, it can get washed off almost instantly like screen printing, but the quality can feel cheap.
Sourcing blanks for clothing can be challenging but there are many websites that can provide you with what you need. Blanks are a good to start with as that's where almost all brands start from. All it takes is one item of clothing and one print to get a lot of people to support your brand. Gildan is an iconic blank hoodie used by many brands and Fruit Of The Loom is quite popular for T-Shirts. A reliable website that you can use to start with is AScolor. They offer high gsm for garments meaning the quality and thickness is nice and customers show more love to clothes that are thicker and of good quality. They also have unique types of hoodies – different from the standard silhouette of hoodies. Wordans, is a good choice from my own personal experience. They have a wider range of clothing and things to get more colours. The quality isn't the greatest but it a great option for a start-ups and experiments. Seasonal blanks are another good choice for blanks. Most of their garments look a lot like Yeezy clothing, with the oversized fit. To be honest, their blanks look so good that you don't even need any designs on it.
Creating clothing releases can be done in a few ways. Starting with clothing drops. A drop can mean numerous things; it can just be a drop of a singular item or a few items. A capsule would be a drop that consists of items that can create an outfit, and a collection is a complete drop that has numerous looks involved. The best thing to do with your brand is to plan your drop capsules and collections properly and according to different seasons. So, when it's winter, plan your summer drops, when it's summer, plan your winter drops – just so you are one step ahead of things. The best things to wear in the summer are shorts, t-shirts, bucket hats and hoodies. Even though hoodies can be warm, they are good in the summer on cooler days. For the winter you can have beanies, coats, jackets, scarves, socks and more.
Just remember, preparation and timing is crucial! If you leave things too late you will miss out on dropping when the time comes and that can lead to loss in your business.
Shooting lookbooks for your brand is important. The main purpose of it is to tell a story and capture the mood and setting of your clothing drop through a series of images or video. So, it's essential because it could make people who are looking at your clothing relate to it more; they will see it in a live setting and in action, rather than on a mock up image.
Your lookbook shoots should be high quality and well thought out. Consider how your shoot can reflect your brand story and other core elements of your brand. Opting for studio shoots can sometimes be limiting so be experimental and test out different settings and locations. If you are shooting in a studio, use backdrops and props to be creative with your set ups. Models can also help elevate your shoots. If you are working on a budget, I'd recommend studio shoot with friends, but if you have the budget, invest in models, and venture out to different locations. Owning a camera would be beneficial but if you can't afford one, you can pay someone to do the photoshoot. You can also use your phone camera for shoots – with the right settings and editing, you can get great results!
Creating a website is one of the key parts to owning a clothing brand. Your brand needs to be accessible to everyone and websites provide that. They can be accessed on phones, console, computers, tablets and more. You can still sell your products at pop up shops and markets but it's not enough to get your name out there.
On social media you can create Ads which will lead to your website getting engagement and getting your name out there. Also, if you own a shop and not a website, you might have off days where not many customers will go to your shop, but if you have a website, you will make sales since people who are in the country even out of the country can purchase items.
It's important to make an engaging website. It should be well designed and easy to navigate. A website overloaded with effects and visuals can drive customers away. The pages take longer to load making it more difficult to understand. Brands like Cortiez, Alwaysdowhatyoushoulddo and Benculture have well designed websites; they are simple and easy to use. Designer Aris Tatalovich has an aesthetically pleasing website but it can be confusing to navigate. The homepage has a bunch of pictures with models wearing the clothes pop up and overlap each other. Someone who isn’t familiar with his website or style of work, would not know what the website is for or how to use it. It’s important to find the right balance – keep it engaging but simple!
Platforms like Wix, Shopify, Readymag are website builders that you can use to help build your online store. But from personal experience, I would recommend Shopify; it’s reliable and has all the tools you need integrated in the platform. There’s also the option to hire someone to create your website from scratch if they know coding. You also need to make sure you have your website domain sorted to link your site to it. Website that ends it .co.uk or .com is better. But brands right now have been using .xyz which I think is quite cool.
Social media is key to getting your brand out there. Finding the right handle is imperative to maintaining consistency across all parts of your digital presence. For example, if your brand name is Everlast, your website is everlastclothing.co.uk, and your Instagram is everlastclothingbranduk, this can create confusion for your audience. Uniformity is vital! Keep your brand consistent across all digital platforms.

This is an AI rendering. The problem with AI renderings in costuming and in clothing design is that AI begins at a completely different place than actual designers: It doesn’t consider the materials necessary, or the time it would take to construct the project, or the structuring of the dress. Yes, it’s beautiful, but a good designer begins with a budget and works from a knowledge of fabrics and structure. If you asked someone to put together this dress, they would not only have to take the time to ‘reverse engineer’ how to do it, but they would have to start from scratch in figuring out whether it’s possible to simulate the colors and textures and layering while maintaining a structurally sound gown. They would have to compute the extra cost for the color work and addition of details.
Yes, it’s beautiful, and it’s likely that a reasonable construction plan could be formed for a dress like this, but the time and the money spent on such a dress would likely outweigh a shop or a consumer’s desire for the gown to be made as it was designed.
A lot of designers are very upset right now because posts like these are flooding our spaces on social media—to the point that non-designers who do not understand the job are claiming that Costumers and Designers will become ‘obsolete’ in the face of AI. This is particularly maddening when AI is being fed the works of humans and then constructing images that would require outrageous cost and work to re-design in a workable way and then construct.
It’s normal for designers to draw from each other and become inspired by existing works. There’s a reason why fashion designs aren’t copyrighted—it allows the industry to remain fluid and to base itself in a common cultural zeitgeist without unnecessary possession over a particular cut or pattern. In fact, you’re not likely to get in trouble for draping a Couture dress unless you try to pass it off as the work of the original Couture company—because the logo and the branding are copyrighted, and the design sketches are copyrighted, but the style and drape and cut of the dress itself is not copyrighted.
The problem with AI is that it doesn’t innovate in the way that humans do. We draw from the same sources and make something new and carefully considered and wearable and, most importantly, buildable within reason of the resources available to us. AI doesn’t do that. It re-mixes existing work without the human touch of newness. It doesn’t consider the ‘how’ of building. It doesn’t consider the expense or the people involved in the process of creating the dress. And, the faster a computer designs a dress, the faster work the ignorant consumer base is going to demand of the construction team.
Sewing is a specialized skill that takes a good eye, a knowledge of industry precedent, a knowledge of textiles, an awareness of timing and budget, and so much more. People are already overworked to the point of burnout in this industry. Please please please, do your research and familiarize yourself with the process so that you can better respect the artists involved. Yes, AI is beautiful—but it will never be human. And it’s already doing a great deal of harm to how people perceive the human parts of the design and construction portions of the industry.
#AI art#anti AI art#clothing construction#fashion#please respect the designer#there is value in being human#there’s a great deal that goes into design and clothing creation#I’m begging you#don’t circulate AI art unless you are also willing to raise awareness of what it’s missing and where it fails#yes it can help support and inspire a project#but this is far from a completed design#check out podcasts like Dressed: The History of Fashion#clothing responds to society#changes in technology have a strong affect on clothing design#so do wars and material / labor availability#so do political movements#undergarments have changed over the years as the result of changing toilet designs#high heels were invented for the Persian Cavalry and were adopted by wannabe royalty and then pushed on suffragettes#in order to destablize their political movement#Different silhouettes are only possible with the correct understructures#is AI going to tell you what understructure you need?#a designer would#a human would understand the need for more information#this isn’t paint by number#clothing designers draw from the cultural zeitgeist#not just from pictures

Management of Contemporary Fashion Industry
The contemporary fashion industry is a dynamic and ever-changing landscape, influenced by shifting consumer preferences, technology, and global events. To thrive in this environment, effective management is crucial. In this short blog, we'll explore the key aspects of managing the contemporary fashion industry.
Adaptation to Consumer Trends
Consumer preferences in fashion can change rapidly. To stay relevant, fashion managers must keep a close eye on emerging trends and shifts in consumer behavior. Understanding what consumers want, from sustainable fashion to personalization, is essential for making informed decisions about product development and marketing strategies.
Sustainability and Ethical Practices
Sustainability and ethical practices are no longer just buzzwords; they're fundamental to the contemporary fashion industry. Fashion managers are increasingly tasked with implementing sustainable supply chain practices, reducing waste, and ensuring ethical labor conditions. Balancing profitability with social and environmental responsibility is a significant challenge in contemporary fashion management.
Digital Transformation
Technology is revolutionizing the fashion industry, from design and production to retail and marketing. Fashion managers need to embrace digital tools and technologies, including 3D design software, AI-driven supply chain management, and e-commerce platforms. A strong online presence and the ability to adapt to digital trends are vital for success.
Inclusivity and Diversity
Contemporary fashion is embracing inclusivity and diversity. Fashion managers must ensure that their brand's messaging, marketing campaigns, and product offerings reflect a diverse and representative range of customers. Promoting inclusivity is not only about ethical responsibility but also sound business strategy.
Data-Driven Decision Making
Data analytics plays a significant role in contemporary fashion management. Collecting and analyzing data on consumer behavior, market trends, and sales performance can inform strategic decisions. Fashion managers who harness data effectively gain a competitive advantage.
Fast Fashion vs. Sustainable Practices
The fast fashion model, characterized by rapid turnover of inexpensive, on-trend garments, competes with a growing demand for sustainable and slow fashion. Fashion managers must navigate this dichotomy, considering the benefits of both models and their impact on the brand's image and bottom line.
Globalization and Supply Chain Complexity
Fashion supply chains have become increasingly complex and global. Effective management involves overseeing the flow of materials, production, and distribution across international borders. This entails dealing with geopolitical challenges, trade regulations, and logistics.
Brand Identity and Storytelling
Contemporary fashion is not just about clothing; it's about storytelling and brand identity. Fashion managers must craft compelling narratives around their brands, aligning with consumer values and creating emotional connections. Successful brand management is about more than just a logo; it's about the stories you tell.
Conclusion:
The contemporary fashion industry demands a delicate balancing act. Fashion managers must adapt to ever-changing consumer preferences, integrate sustainability and ethical practices, embrace technology, promote inclusivity, analyze data, and navigate the complexities of global supply chains. It's an exciting and challenging field that requires adaptability, creativity, and a keen understanding of the contemporary fashion landscape.
