You and the Pyro had been fast friends ever since you had arrived to work for Mann co. Their excitable attitude, clear body language, and evident likes and dislikes made it easy to communicate, despite your inability to understand their mumbles. It was this friendship that made you feel guilty for what you had been experiencing recently.

When you fell asleep at night, you could always tell when you were about to slip into a lucid dream. The way your body tingled and buzzed as you drifted off was a telltale sign. Watching the backs of your eyes yet again, you felt a sense of excitement. It had been a while since you had properly dreamt, and you were thrilled at the prospect of it finally happening again.

As the static faded into a familiar scene, you wondered what caused you to start in the base's shower room. Sure, you had awkward encounters in there before, but nothing too fresh in your memory to constitute a dream as far as you were aware. Even odder, nobody else was in there except for you and the sound of water running from the third shower stall. As the water splashed onto the floor, you felt your other senses start to fade in. The sound echoed around you as you felt hot moisture cling to your skin, beads of water forming and rolling down.

"Wait, the third stall?" You spoke to yourself, your words coming out garbled as though you had said them underwater. That always sucked about dreams, speaking became difficult and sometimes downright impossible. Still, you had a point. There were 9 stalls, and one of them was never used, ever. Each shower had been assigned to a mercenary, as to not mix up personal shower items or cause the petty squabbles some of them were known for. Recalling what you knew, the first one belonged to Scout, the second one to Soldier, then the third to... Pyro."But that doesn't make any sense!" You garbled, forgetting again the unpleasant feeling that dreams often connect to speaking. You then thought about how Pyro never takes off their suit, always staying inside the safety of the asbestos lining, always breathing through their mask. That fact combined with Pyro's abhorrence for water created a curiosity that seemed almost unshakeable. You slowly and steadily made your way to the third shower, cautious and slow, almost worried about what you might find.

As you reached their stall, you couldn't help but pause outside the curtain. Surely this was some sort of major privacy violation. "Just because everybody is curious about Pyro's appearance doesn't mean they don't deserve the basic decency to get dressed before-". But before you could finish that thought, the curtain moved, revealing a beautifully disfigured body. Their arms covered in artificial ripples, the wrinkled skin cascading into little waves before descending into a faded white where the scarring met the remaining flesh. Their whole body seemed to follow this pattern, a myriad of scars in a mesmerizing pattern that captured your attention completely.

Standing there with your mouth agape, totally entranced as you beheld the form in front of you, they shyly moved their arms to cover their breasts. Bashfully turning their head to the side, their face burst out in a bright red tinge. "Pyro-" you whispered, your voice coming out crystal clear. "You're beautiful."

Your vision suddenly started to fade into static as you felt someone start to shake you. "Wait!" Your voice abruptly unable to leave your throat, you tried to scream. "I'm not done yet! Please!" Barely a whisper choked out as you came to in your bed. Alone.

There's a LOT of things people do wrong when constructing fantasy beliefs in pantheons of gods, but one of the more specific is having only one god related to fertility and it kind of being just a horny sex thing.

Like you'll have one in the entire bunch whose sphere is listed as fertility and it's basically like Yeah this is the sex one. She's always depicted naked (but not TOO naked because censorship and/or the writer's own skittishness). She's going to have the exact body type epitomized in contemporary western beauty standards and there's usually no chance in hell that she's gonna be fat (unless MAYBE they're referencing 'venus' figurines). Her thing is fertility, which means having sex and making babies. Might be a goddess of beauty or love or marriage too, because these are kinda sex things, but that's probably it. And yeah that sort of thing is virtually nonexistent in real life.

Like the concept of fertility is so fundamentally important to the function of most societies in human history in ways that it is just Not in industrialized imperial core countries. Most people are getting food from stores, and not having to worry about harvesting crops or breeding livestock or foraging for food or having enough animals to hunt, so fertility only really comes up as a concern if you're trying to have kids (and there is certainly societal pressure to have children, but your wellbeing and survival is rarely going to Depend on it). And I think writing only from that perspective and not even trying to learn about WHY fertility is so conceptually important is why you see this trend.

There's no absolute universal statement about how people believe in gods but it's broadly accurate that systems with many deities will Usually have more than one deity associated with fertility, and these associations will certainly include human reproduction but also the fertility of livestock/hunted animals, plants, the land itself.

Some fertility deities may also be heavily associated with seasonal changes or environmental factors that agriculture or foraging is dependent on (spring/summer/fall, seasonal rains, seasonal flooding, rain itself, sunlight, good soil, rivers, wetlands, etc). Some certainly might be related to love, marriage, sex, and beauty, but that's VERY RARELY going to be the sole way the concept of fertility is embodied. And they'll often will have other associations not directly about fertility, or related to fertility in culturally specific ways.

"Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks" (1880–1891 - Ilya Repin) / "Garden of Earthly Delights" (1490-1510 - Hieronymus Bosch)

REPLY OF THE ZAPOROZHIAN COSSACKS: Uuuuuuooo I’m pretty sure somebody has submitted the world famous Repin with the fella holding his dead son, and yeah that one is truly harrowing and I think it should be in the final bracket cause it would sweep but Repin has such a range and it’s all very deeply felt and sensitive stuff. For this one he did a couple of versions - you could pick either because they’re both rich in a really immediate sense of humanity. Again on the technical side this is a truly bonkers piece of work because he stitched its elements together from countless studies of people he knew and the result is still somehow a Realist masterpiece rather than the patchwork amalgamation you’d expect.

And each figure isn’t just irresistibly human - he gives all of them so much tangible warmth (the riotous laughter! The attention paid to detail in their clothes! The irritated dog in the bottom left corner) and the fact that theyre all his friends and colleagues is really charming. Dunno if its like “molten lava” kind of evocation of emotion but it certainly makes me feel something. ( @idiotpalespiral )

GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS: think it's one of the greatest odes to human imagination and it's insane that it was painted around 1500. it's hard to overstate how innovate and unique bosch's art is. besides, he probably hadn't even ever taken acid in his life, so i don't know how he did that (@cuties-in-codices)

happy femslash february, here’s a 2003 french-japanese movie about miserable office workers.

so. the thing is. this movie makes me insane. it’s deranged normal office drama. it’s mundane absurdism. it’s psychological warfare and power harrassment. it’s not romantic. it’s extremely homoerotic. and it is very french. I’m putting it in my femslash feb recs because. well.

these women are Not Normal about each other. with amélie it’s much more obvious since it’s from her perspective, but there’s a lot about miss mori you pick up from context and extrapolation and she is also extremely Not Normal about amélie.

since it’s about culture clash, I’m sure it’ll be very hit or miss with some folks in terms of how much it leans into stereotypical(/satirical) depictions of japanese office culture, but I felt like 1) there was a wide enough variety of characters to offset completely flattening the conflict, 2) it’s clear to me that amélie is supposed to be shown as having A Very Biased (and sometimes cringe) Perspective.

2a. Zoom out, Guillermo in the foreground braced up against the door, one oily hand slipping and sliding over the locked knob. The size of the panel is just barely keeping his modesty intact, but if it wasn’t clear before that he’s totally naked you can definitely tell now. Still smiling amicably, he replies, “Of course! We’re friends!” The Guide stands behind him in the corridor, arms clasped demurely behind her back as she furrows her brow and says, “Yes…friends help friends, don’t they.” 2b.
