summarizing popular school shooter films:

(obvious spoiler alert)

elephant (2003): begins with viewers following the seemingly-average lives of yet to be victims prior to the mass shooting. the perpetrators are also seen spending quiet time alone together at home before they initiate their attack, slight bullying is shown but it's not emphasized throughout the film. it ends with their planned shooting and one of perpetrators murdering the other despite an earlier kiss shared. their motive for this shooting is seemingly due to external influences such as violent videogames and fascist historical figures.

the film focuses on the peaceful lives of everybody involved and often is ridiculed by the media for being slow-paced, a lot of small talk is included aswell as various hobbies performed among students.

zero day (2003): after one of two boys receive a camera for his eighteenth birthday, they together record themselves preforming a series of chores and minor discussions which they plan to release to the public after the shooting. they live average lives with supporting parents, teasing from other students is only implied although never directly shown. they together shoot their school as planned to and kill themselves in unison out of closeted frustration.

the film consists of multiple tapes put together in which they take turns recording each other. they speak of their plans so averagely and leading up to the shooting the atmosphere is typically upbeat as they joke around unseriously.

klass (2007): a student is bullied by his entire high school class regularly. one day after gym another boy suddenly turns to defend him, which results in the classmates tormenting this other boy aswell. still, he attempts to defend his bullied new friend but instead they are both mocked and beaten daily. this drives them together to shoot their school and then kill themselves.

the film focuses on the downturn of their lives as the pair are neglected frequently, converting them towards depression or feelings of shame. the defending boy loses his girlfriend, mutuals, and all respect from others. klass is melancholic compared to other shooter films.

duck! the carbine high massacre (1999): an antisocial and rudely-mouthed pair are picked on by higher status classmates as are other less popular pupils. the two boys decide they will never be accepted by others and together shoot their school before ending their own lives.

the film mainly mocks american society and characters which are meant to symbolize real life victims by portraying them to be shallow and relatively stupid.
