Clowning and egging (and bears - oh my!) aside this feels like a very classic Fall!Taylor ‘fit. A knit crop, a pleated plaid mini, and boots are an easy, seasonal uniform. One that Taylor has employed many times over in past autumns (Fashion History incoming!). The skirt, esp, has fall vibes all over it. I feel like I’m waiting for what has become a seasonal “pumpkin spice” sweater from her now that we’re officially ushering in fall as of *checks calendar* tomorrow! 

Speaking of, the combo of colours and prints here are also typical of Taylor, who, notably, has always liked to throw in something slightly ‘off’ to an ensemble. And by that yes I am staring at the juxtaposition of the skirt with the boots. Were it me, I would have gone for a single-hued black boot for a more 🥪 style moment to coordinate with her top. Though perhaps she felt the laces did that job in a more subtle way? Ultimately, could I fault her the opp to dangle a snakeskin print in front of us? I suppose not. That said, I’m making mental notes for my own fall ‘fits for an (adjusted) copy + paste (swapping in a turtleneck + tall boots). Don’t think I didn’t notice though how nicely the hardware elements of her Stella bag tie into the belt detail on her mini skirt or how her softer, dusty auburn lip (a change of pace from her typical red that suits her well) also tied into the skirt. I see + appreciate it. 

The coat! The greeeeeeeeeeeeeeen coat. Which, if it’s not obvious, I love and would love even more to see with a different, more complementary ‘fit. Once again, I feel like the buttons on her outerwear are working overtime to tie in the disparate colour elements of the ensemble. Those brown buttons and decorative elements are doing the most to coordinate with the autumnal tones of her skirt. It’s also another pattern, this time a jacquard stripe, on top of the plaid of her skirt and the snakeskin on her boots. That said! What I do *really* love is the tension between this very oversized, boxy piece of outerwear - pulled from the mens section - paired with smaller, more feminine and girly pieces. She did this a lot last fall with the brand Gant. 

While her bag and shoes are by familiar and favoured brands, the skirt designer is new to Taylor. Ramy Brook just so happened to open a brand new store this very same day on Madison Ave in NY which feels like conspicuous timing to my fashion brain. Bravo to them for the v synchronised placement.

Since the end of the Cold War, more information has come to light, with many official documents declassified. My friend Paul Crickmore sent me the following email last year with some interesting information.

I just read the piece you wrote about the loss of #974 a couple of days ago and thought you’d like a ‘sneaky-peek’ at part of the piece that’ll appear in the new book covering the subject…

“Side‑scanning sonar imaging of the crash site took place on 29 and 30 April, and it was not long before the debris field of ’974 was located. The 280ft‑long salvage vessel USS Beaufort was dispatched to lift the wreckage with its 10‑ and 15‑ton cranes, fitted on the bow and stern, respectively, and to find the sensors and defensive systems (Coincidently, the ship was built by Brooke Marine, in the author’s home town of Lowestoft, Suffolk).

Due to the proximity of the communist New People’s Army, a number of Navy SEALs were on board to provide protection to the divers and crew.

One morning during the search, an order for General Quarters was sounded at 0400 hours. Crew members rushed to their action stations in readiness for an immediate confrontation. They saw a large number of small vessels (which had been detected on the Beaufort’s radar) making for the ship.

Tension mounted until it was discovered that the would‑be attackers were fishing boats that had come towards the bright lights of the naval vessel because a very large shoal of fish had congregated around it. 🐠

When ’974 impacted the water inverted both engines, the main undercarriage and the aircraft’s sensors smashed through its upper surfaces.

They were scattered on the ocean floor at varying distances away from the main wreckage field. On the evening of 1 May, wire hawsers were attached to one of the J58 engines. The late evening movements dislodged the TEB tank and caused a small leak, which released tiny amounts of the chemical throughout the night.

TEB CAUSED GREEN PUFFS

As the volatile chemical bubbled to the surface, it mixed with ambient air and exploded in small green puffs. The ‘magic’ of the ‘Yankee’ engineers caused quite a stir among the native fishermen who saw the eerie ‘TEB‑bubble show’. The next day both engines were lifted and brought aboard the Beaufort’s fantail, and two days later, many of the sensors were also recovered. When the ship’s crew attempted to lift the main section of the aircraft, the crane operator found that the large delta‑shaped wing planform greatly exceeded the lifting capacity of his crane, and the wreckage refused to budge an inch. A yard derrick was sent from Subic Bay, and the forward fuselage section was recovered on 7 May, while the main structure was lifted aboard the Beaufort’s fantail the following day. The black wreckage was a sad end for a once‑proud airplane, despite Dan’s skillful ( Dan House, the Pilot) and valiant efforts to save it.”

Dopamine is named for the emotional rollercoaster of her last several years, the peaks and valleys of a life she has mostly kept private. In 2020, Normani's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time after being in remission for 19 years. The following year, just when Andrea had finished chemotherapy, doctors found a lump in her father, Derrick's, prostate: He had cancer, too. Normani considers herself closer with her family than her friends. "I needed to be at home, with my family," she says. They both urged her to keep working on her album though, and not to defer a dream they'd all participated in since Normani was 3 years old.

Normani Kordei Hamilton was born in 1996 to a mother who was a flight attendant and a father who was a union official. The family moved from Atlanta to New Orleans in 1999, and whenever her parents were away for work, her grandmother, Barbara, would take care of her. She was 3 when she fell in love with musicals. She remembers watching John Huston's 1982 film, Annie, and turning to look at her mother, saying, "Mom, I want to do that, I want to be in the TV." Her parents took her seriously and enrolled her in dance classes; it was Barbara who paid for them and sewed all of her costumes. By the time she was 8, she'd grown fond of the dance-focused music videos she'd see on BET's 106 & Park and would do the choreography for Destiny's Child tracks with her friends at birthday parties. (They were partial to "Soldier" and "Cater 2 U.") Ordinarily, Normani was shy and quiet. But when she performed, she would become someone else.

When they snuck back into the city to recover some of their belongings, her parents found the neighbor's shed in their pool. Their family photos were all destroyed. They took what they could, left behind the pet turtles, and decided to start over in Texas. "We were in the car," recalls Normani, "and my mom asked, 'Do you want to go to Dallas to see your godmother? Or to Houston? I hear Beyoncé is from there.'" She laughs. "That was the deciding factor." In Houston, they stayed in a hotel for four months, deleting their savings and stretching their food. Normani, who was entering the sixth grade, struggled to adjust in school before deciding to be homeschooled. This gave her the space to commit more fully to dance, gymnastics, and singing. Her mother would crisscross the states every weekend to bring her to dance competitions and shuttle her to Los Angeles for various auditions. (At 13, she briefly appeared on HBO's Treme, as a child caught in a post-Katrina New Orleans.) At 15, she got on X Factor. The judges (Britney Spears, L.A. Reid, Demi Lovato, and Simon Cowell) didn't think she was ready for a solo career, but Cowell and Reid thought she had potential in a five-piece outfit. They merged her with four other young women, Dinah Jane, Lauren Jauregui, Camila Cabello, and Ally Brooke, who had also auditioned as solo artists, and had them sign a joint record deal under Reid's label Epic Records via Syco Music, the same Cowell-owned label that backed Little Mix, CNCO, and One Direction.

Fifth Harmony became one of the most commercially successful girl groups of all time over a span of six years, selling 33 million records. For Normani, the group was a blessing that also traumatized her. She refers to her "time in the group" like a prison sentence ordered and duly served. But she says she was grateful for her ability to hide. "I didn't want to be at the forefront," she says. "It wasn't until later that I started feeling like a token."

When Normani came out with her single Wild Side, it was nocturnal and assertive, but with a hint of playfulness. Normani believed in the song enough to fund the music video herself, which cost upwards of $1 million; it's a psychedelic, gravity-defying montage of leopard print, crushed velvet, and acres of glistening skin that sees the singer phasing through cielings, doing the splits in full leather, and dancing with a doppelganger like the closing scene from Annihilation.

"My mom says she wants a tattoo," Normani shares with a flutter of laughter. "It's funny because growing up, she was always like, 'It's not worth it to get your bellybutton pierced or to have tattoos. Your body is a temple.'" Normani has two: the bootlike outline of Lousiana on her right ankle, and the phrase "God's Daughter" in script on her clavicle. Both were impulsive decisions. "Because I think so much and I'm so intentional when it comes to music-related things, or anything to do with my career, when it's something outside of that, I allow myself to move before I can second-guess myself," she says.
