If I post everything all at once, it's going to take longer to get out because I am... indecisive. If I post it little by little (one chapter at a time), it will allow me to work on a schedule that I set myself but also force me to stop changing things and leave the damn thing alone lol. Again, I am indecisive.

Dragon Age development insights and highlights from Bioware: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development
Some really tasty factoids here.
Tumblr media
Cut for length.
Dragon Age: Origins
The continent of Thedas was at one point going to be named Pelledia, a name initially floated by James Ohlen
“Qunari” was a temporary name that ended up unintentionally sticking, much like “Thedas”
Mary Kirby wrote the Landsmeet. To this day, nobody understands how it works, except possibly her. If she’s “really really drunk” she can explain how it works. There’s as many words in it as Sten’s entire conversations put together
Concept art for Thedosian art - as in in-world art - draws heavily on Renaissance-era portraiture, the Art Nouveau movement, religious styles and media like stained glass, and favorite pieces from the golden age of illustrations in the early 20th century
Andrastianism in-world (art-wise) is depicted in wildly different methods depending on who in-world made the art in question. “One religion, 3 different lenses”. There’s the Chantry take, the Orlesian take and the Fereldan take; each with its own different interpretations, different mediums and different stories
The stained glass images were drawn by Nick Thornborrow for DAI, to decorate religious spaces in that game “and beyond”
irl Viking art influenced Ferelden
Greek and Italian art influenced Orlais
The book also had other insights into and anecdotes from the development of DAO, but I’ve transcribed them recently as they’re essentially the stories DG has recently been relating on the awesome Summerfall Studios DAO playthrough Twitch streams. (On those streams he provides dev commentary while Liam Esler plays through DA. The ones with DG are currently once every two weeks. Check them out! Here’s a calendar where you can check when the next one is) Instead of repeating myself I’ll just provide the link to the first transcript. From there you can navigate to the subsequent parts. Note these streams are ongoing. At this point I will also point you to a related post which is cliff notes of the Dragon Age chapter in Jason Schreier’s book Blood Sweat and Pixels.
Dragon Age II
DAO had the longest development period in BioWare history. In contrast DA2 had the shortest
Initially DA2 was going to be an expansion to DAO. A few months in EA said “Yeah, expansions like these don’t sell very well, so let’s make it a sequel.” So it suddenly became DA2 and they had to make it even bigger, although they still only had 1.5 years of time in which to do this
Production of DA2 officially lasted only 9 months, and at the time the team was still supporting live content for DAO! They finished development that January after the design team crunched all the way through the holiday period that year. Then it went to cert 9 times
The limited time they had is why the story takes place mostly in and around 1 city, and over 7 years (so it was temporal, rather than over physical distance, because a more expansive world would have taken more irl time to make)
They had no time to review even the main plot. Mike Laidlaw pitched the idea of 3 stories taking place at different points in the PC’s life, tied together by Varric’s recollections of events. DG rolled with this and made 1 presentation on the idea. This presentation was then approved and off they went
As they were writing DG realized that there was going to be no oversight and that everything was going to be a ‘first draft’. “Because nobody had time.” He sat down with the writers and said “Look, here’s the conditions we’re working under. A lot of what we’re putting out is gonna be raw. We’re not going to get the editing we need. We’re not going to get the kind of iteration we need. So I’m going to trust you all to do your best work.”
Looking back, DG has mixed feelings on DA2. “A lot of corners were cut. The public perception was that it was smaller than DAO. That’s a sin on its own.”
Despite this he thinks DA2 has some of the best writing in the series, especially character-wise. The DA2 chars are his favorite
The pace with which production progressed may in some ways have helped. “When we do a lot of revision, we often file away [as in buff off] some of the good writing as well. Somehow DA2′s whirlwind process resulted in some really good writing”
The pace meant chars landed on the writers in various stages of completion. For example Isabela was fairly defined due to appearing in DAO. In contrast Varric at the start was just that single piece of widely-shown concept art
Varric was conceived as a storyteller not a fighter. His skills are talking and bullshitting. Hence the question became, so what does this guy do in combat? The direction was to make him as different as possible to Oghren, so not a warrior. He couldn’t be a dual-wielding rogue in order to differentiate him from Bela. But you can’t really picture this guy with a bow. “For a dwarf, it would probably be a crossbow. We didn’t have crossbows, or we only had crossbows for the darkspawn. And they were part of the models. We didn’t have a separate crossbow that was equip-able by the chars. They had to like, crop one off a darkspawn and remodel it. And that became Bianca” (quote: Mary Kirby)
“Dwarven mages are exceedingly rare.” [???]
If DAO was a classic fantasy painting, DA2 was a screenshot from a Kurosawa film or a northern Renaissance painting. (Here Matt Rhodes was commenting on art style)
John Epler: “In any one of our games, there’s a 95% chance that if you turn the camera away from what it’s looking at, you’ll see all kinds of janky stuff. The moment we know the camera is no longer facing someone, we no longer care what happens to them. We will teleport people around. We will jump people around. We will literally have someone walk off screen and then we will shift them 1000 meters down, because we’re fixing some bug.” John also talked about this camera stuff in a recent charity Twitch stream for Gamers For Groceries. There’s a writeup of that stream here
Designing Kirkwall pushed concept artists to the limits of visual storytelling, because it has a long history that they wanted to be present. It was once the hub of Tevinter’s slave empire, so it needed to look brutal and harsh, but it also then needed to feel reclaimed, evolved, and with elements of contemporary Free Marches culture
The initial plan was for DA titles to be distinguished by subtitles not numbers, so that each experience could stand on its own rather than feel like a sequel or continuation. (My note: New PCs in each entry make sense then when you consider this and other factoids we know like how DA is the story of the world not of any one PC). Later, DA2′s name was made DA2 in a bid to more clearly connect the game to its predecessor. For DAI they returned to the original naming convention. (My note: so I’d reckon they’d be continuing the subtitle naming convention for DA4)
DA2 was initially code-named “Nug Storm”, strictly internally
The Cancelled DA2 Expansion - Exalted March
This was a precursor to DAI
It was meant to bridge the gap between DA2 and DAI
It focused on the fallout from Kirkwall’s explosion, with Cory serving as the villain
Meredith’s red lyrium statue was basically going to infest Kirkwall and it would end up [with what would end up] the red templars taking over Kirkwall and essentially being Cory’s army
To stop him Hawke would have recruited various factions, including Bela’s Felicisima Armada and the Qunari at Estwatch, forcing Hawke to split loyalties and risk relationships in the process
It was meant to bring DA2′s story to an end and end in Varric’s death. DG was very happy with this because all of DA2 is Varric’s tale. The expansion was supposed to start at the moment Cassandra’s interrogation of him ended in the present. “And we finished off the story with Varric having this heroic death.” It tied things up and would have broken many fan hearts, something BioWare writers notoriously enjoy. But between a transition to the new Frostbite engine and the scope of DAI, the decision was made to cancel EM, work any hard-to-lose concepts into DAI, and in the process save Varric’s life. DG has talked about the Varric dying thing before
Concept art for EM explored new areas previously not depicted in the DA universe, with costumes that reflected next steps for familiar chars. Varric was going to war, what would he have worn? With Anders, if he survived DA2, the plan was to present a redeemed Warden
A char that vaguely resembled Sera in DAI was first concepted for EM. This fact was mentioned near this concept art (see the female elf) and this concept art of Bethany with the blond bob
The writers sketched out plans to end it with Hawke having the option to marry their LI. This included alternate ceremonies for party members like Bethany and Sebastian if the player opted not to wed. There was even a wedding dress made for Hawke. This asset made it into DAI (Sera and Cullen’s weddings in Trespasser). The dress can also be seen in DAI during an ambient NPC wedding after completing a chain of war table missions
The destruction of a Chantry was explored in concept art as it might have happened in EM. This idea ended up carrying over to the beginning of DAI. (My note: Lol, the idea that DA2 could have had 2 Chantries being destroyed in it 😆)
World of Thedas
Sheryl Chee and Mary Kirby started with “a disgusting little dish called fluffy mackerel pudding”. In the middle of DAO’s busy dev period one of them (they can’t remember who) found a recipe online for this, scanned in from a 70s cookbook. “I don’t understand why it was fluffy. Why would you want fluffy mackerel pudding?” MK says. “We loved it so much we included it in a DAO codex.”
This led them to create more food for Thedas, full recipes included, like a Fereldan turnip and barley stew from MK and SC’s Starkhaven fish and egg pie. The fish pie became Sebastian’s favorite. “To me it made sense for it to be fish pie because a lot of the Free Marches are on the coast”, SC says, “It was something that was popular in medieval times, so I thought, let’s make a fish pie! I looked at medieval recipes and I concocted a fish pie which I fed to my partner, and he was like ‘This is not terrible’”
For WoT the whole studio was asked to contribute family recipes which might have a place in Thedas. SC adapted these to fit in one Thedosian culture or another, including a beloved banana bread that localization producer Melanie Fleming would regularly bake to keep the DA team motivated. “Melanie’s banana bread got us through Inquisition”
DAI
It says part of DAI takes place in or near the border with Nevarra [???]
This game was aimed to be bigger than DA2 and even DAO in every conceivable way
The first hour had to do a lot of heavy lifting, tying together the events of DAO and DA2 while introducing a new PC, new followers etc in the aftermath of the big attack. DG rewrote it 7 times then Lukas Kristjanson did 2 more passes
DG: “Our problem is always that our endings are so important, but we leave them to last, when we have no time. I kept pushing on DAI: ‘Can we work on the ending now? Can we work on the ending now? Can we do it early on?’ Because I knew exactly what it was going to be. But despite the fact that it kept getting scheduled, whenever the schedule started falling behind, it kept getting pushed back... so, of course, it got left til last again.”
“The reveal of the story’s real antagonist, Solas, a follower until the end, when he betrayed the player”. “Solas’ story remains a main thread in Inquisition’s long-awaited follow-up” [these aren’t DG quotes, just bits of general text]
Over the course of development they had 8 full-time writers and 4 editors working on it. Other writers joined later to help wrangle what ended up being close to 1 million words of dialogue and unspoken text. While many teams moved to a more open concept style of work for DAI, the writers remained tucked away in their own room, a choice DG says was necessary, given how much they talked. All the talking had a purpose ofc as if someone hit a bump or wall in their writing they would open the problem up to the room
As writing on a project like DAI progresses, the writers grow punchier and weirder things make it into the game. This is especially the case towards the end of a project (they get tired, burned out)
Banter and codexes require less ‘buy-in’ (DG has talked about this concept a few times on the Twitch streams) from other designers. DG liked to leave banter for last as a reward because it was fun. Banter begins as lists of topics for 2 followers to discuss. These may progress over time or be one off exchanges. One banter script can balloon to well over 10k words. “The banter was always huge because we were always like, laughing, and really at that point, our fields of fucks were rather barren, so we would just do whatever”
The bog unicorn happened pretty much by accident. It was designed by Matt Rhodes and was one of his fav things to design. They needed horse variations and he had already designed an undead variant which was a bog mummy [bog body]. irl these are preserved in a much different way to traditional mummies. When someone dies in a bog their skin turns black and raisin-like. The examples we know of tend to have bright red hair for whatever reason. It’s a very striking look and MR wanted to do a horse version of this as he thought it’d be neat. 5 mins before the review meeting for it he had a big ‘Aha!’ moment, quickly looked up a rusty old Viking sword, and photoshopped it through its skull like that was how it died. “And I was like, ‘I just made a unicorn. Alright, in it goes!’” It got approved. “So we built the thing. It fit. It told a little story”
With the irl Inquisition longsword, one of the objects they tested its cleaving ability on was a plush version of Leliana’s nug Schmooples
The concept art team explored a wide variety of visuals for the Inquisitor’s signature mark. It needed to look powerful and raw but couldn’t look like a horrific wound. In some cases, as cool as the idea looked on paper, they just weren’t technically feasible, especially as they had to be able to fit on any number of different bodies
Bug report: “Endlessly spawning mounts! At one point during development, Inquisitors could summon a new horse every time they whistled, allowing them to amass a near infinite number of eager steeds that faithfully followed them across Thedas. “You could go charging across levels and they’d all gallop behind you,” Jen Cheverie says, “It was beautiful.” Trotting into town became an epic horse siege as a tidal wave of mounts enveloped the streets. Jen called it her Army of Ponies”
The giants came from DA Week, an internal period when devs can pursue different individual creative projects that in some way benefit DA. They also had a board game from one of these that they were going to put in but they didn’t have time. It’s referenced though. It was dwarven chess
Josie’s outfit is made of gold silk and patterned velvet, with leather at her waist. She carries “an ornate ledger” and she has “an ornamented collar sitting around her neck, finished by a brilliant red ruby, like a drop of Antivan wine in a sunbeam”
Iron Bull’s armor is leather. His loose pantaloons and leather boots give him agility to charge
On DAI in particular, concept artists took special care to make sure costumes would be realistic, at least in a practical ‘this obeys the laws of physics and textiles’ sense. “While on Inquisition, we thought about cosplay from a concept art perspective. Given how incredible a lot of [cosplays] are, I now am not worried about them. In fact in some cases in the future I want to throw them curveballs like, ‘All right, you clever bastards. Let’s see if you can do this!’”
2 geese that nested on the office building and had chicks were named Ganders and Arishonk (it wasn’t known who was the mom or the dad). Other possible names were Carver Honke, Bethany Honke, Urdnot Pecks, Quackwall, Cassandra Pentagoose, the Iron Bill, Shepbird, Garroose, Admiral Quackett, Scout Honking, HChick-47 and Darth Malgoose
Bug report: “The surprising adventures of Ser Noodles!” DAI was the first time the series had a mount feature, meaning this had a lot of bugs. A lot of the teams’ favorite bugs were to do with the mounts. There was a period of time where the Inquisitor’s horse seemed to lose all bone and muscle in its legs. They had a week or so where all quadruped legs were broken. It was a bit noticeable in things like nugs and other small beasties but the horse was insanely obvious. “The first time we summoned the horse [for this] and started running around, the entire QA exploration room just exploded with laughter.” Its legs flapped around like cooked fettucine, leading testers to lovingly nickname it Ser Noodles. At galloping speeds the legs almost looked like helicopter blades, especially when footage was set to classic pieces such as Wagner’s Flight of the Valkyries
For DAI the artists were asked questions like “What would Morrigan wear to a formal ball? Can Cassandra pull off a jaunty hat?”
On DAI storyboarding became the norm. John Epler: “Cinematic design for the longest time was the Wild West. It was ‘here’s a bunch of content, now do it however you want’, which resulted in some successes and some failures.” Storyboarding gave designers a consistent visual blueprint based on ideas from designers, writers and concept artists
Quote from a storyboard by Nick Thornborrow (the Inquisitor going into the party at the end of basegame sequence): “Until Corypheus revealed himself they could not see the single hand behind the chaos. A magister and a darkspawn combined. The ultimate evil. So evil. Eviler than puppy-killers and egg farts combined.”
A general note on concept art:
In the early stages of any project, before the concept artists are aware of any writing, they like to just draw what they think cool story moments could be. It’s not unusual for the team to then be inspired by these and fold them into the game as the project progresses

TOASTYSTATS: HOW BIG IS WATTPAD?
I’ve been wondering for a long time how much fanfic is on Wattpad, how fast it’s growing, and how it compares to other major platforms.  Especially after @fffinnagain did some analysis showing that posting rate on AO3 has surpassed posting on Fanfiction.net (FFN), and @fansplaining suggested in a recent episode that they thought maybe Wattpad has been turning away from fanfic, I was curious how Wattpad compared.
Only AO3 reports the exact number of fanworks on its site.  To estimate the number of works on FFN and Wattpad, I wrote a script to sample random works from each site.  (See details below).
You can see all the images in higher resolution on imgur.
So which site has the most fanfic?
It turns out that it depends how you count. See the first figure above.
As of late October/early November, when I was grabbing these numbers, AO3 has ~4.2M fanworks.  AO3 additionally has ~50K works in the Original Work category.
All works on FFN are supposed to be fanfic, so I took the estimated total number of works to be the total amount of fanfic.  (A fraction of the works in the Misc category appear to actually be original work, but I think generously that number could be estimated as 20K original works, which doesn’t substantially change my estimate that FFN has ~7.7M fanworks.
Unlike AO3 and FFN, Wattpad is a general self-publishing platform, and “Fanfiction” is only one genre that authors can choose.  When you do a search on Wattpad, the site says there are 4.1M fanworks matching the term “Fanfiction.”  Based on sampling, I estimate that there are may be more like 5.1M works in the “Fanfiction” genre.  And then when I hand categorized 100 of them (based on title, summary, tags, and sometimes the first page of the fic), I realized that there are a whole lot of pieces of fanfic that the authors have placed in other genres (e.g., “Romance” or “Random”).  Including works in other categories, I estimate closer to 8.0M fanworks.
Thus, Wattpad has either the lowest amount or highest amount of fanworks of all the platforms. ;P  But it seems reasonable to think it probably has the most fanworks, or close to it.  This also means that when they say they’ve had “over 400 million story uploads,” they are presumably counting individual chapters.
I’ll also get to this more in future posts, but according to both my sample and the site’s (confusing, opaque) search results, Fanfiction is the biggest genre on Wattpad.
If you’re like, Um, okay, so if it’s so big, why don’t I know anyone who uses Wattpad?  well, that’s a reasonable question.  I'm hoping to explore a number of differences between Wattpad and the other platforms in future posts.  But partial spoiler alert -- Wattpad seems to most often be used for RPF, especially K-pop and other bandom fic.  It also looks like the users skew more international than on the other sites (based on the distribution of languages -- e.g., Wattpad has lots of Spanish, Filipino, and other languages from across Asia, Europe, and Latin & South America). It possibly skews younger as well.  And listen to/read @fansplaining‘s recent episode on monetization of fanfic for some great discussion of other platform differences.
Keep reading for more about site growth and missing works.
Update:
A clarifying note from @elizabethminkel about @fansplaining‘s comments:
“When we discussed Wattpad turning away from fanfiction, we were specifically talking about the platform, not its users. (I don’t think you made that assumption having listened, but I don’t know if it’s super clear from your description.) Wattpad has said things along the lines of, ‘Fanfiction has only ever been about 20% of our platform”—which it looks like it continues to be! So the interesting question here is how a platform continues to scale with user-generated content when a solid portion of that content has kind of maxed out monetarily. Like, more and more fic will be published on the site, but that doesn’t mean more and more profit for Wattpad or its users—which is a problem within the tech industry’s current models.“
She also has some excellent observations about a bunch of Wattpad content not being very fic-like, which I’ll hopefully dive into more soon -- thanks, Elizabeth! :)
/Update
Which site is growing fastest?
FFN is the oldest site, but growth on the platform slowed and then started decreasing somewhere around 2012 (based on my samples and Finn’s work).  I.e., there are still works being posted each year, but at a decreasing rate.
Meanwhile, both AO3 (founded 2007) and the “Fanfiction” genre on Wattpad (founded 2006) are growing fast; posting rates surpassed that of FFN in 2015 and 2014, respectively.  Wattpad appears to be growing fastest.  As of November:
Wattpad’s “Fanfiction” genre received at estimated 1.6M new works so far in 2018, which means I’d estimate (very) roughly that there could be more like 2.5M new fanworks total, including ones in other genres. But that’s based on my hand labeling a sample of 100 works from various years, and it assumes that the ratio of unlabeled:labeled fanfic on the site has stayed roughly the same over the years.  That assumption may not be right.
AO3 has 0.9M new works so far in 2018.
FFN has 0.3M new works so far in 2018.
Based on past patterns, I predict there will be big surges in production rate in AO3 December due to annual holiday breaks and gift exchanges -- it looks like this seasonal surge occurs more dramatically on AO3 than on FFN, though it happens on both.  I don’t know about seasonal production patterns on Wattpad.
Which site ends up with the most deleted or unpublished works?
Update: With huge thanks to @zz9pzza for clarifications about AO3 and examples -- I’ve rephrased most of the following from them:  As of a system update around 4 years ago, AO3 only assigns 1/3 of possible story IDs to actual stories (to avoid numbering collisions), which means that most of the “missing” story IDs were never actually assigned. For instance, the following sequence of story IDs would be assigned: [16686808, 16686811, 16686814, 16686817, 16686820, 16686823].  Some quick estimates lead to thinking AO3 may have more like a 14% deletion rate -- far lower than what I show in terms of missing story IDs.
Do the other platforms also have similar explanations for their large missing ID rates?  Not necessarily -- FFN does not appear to be doing a similar thing currently (Nov 2018); there are recent sequences of several ID numbers in a row corresponding to actual stories (e.g.: 3119884, 3119885, 3119886, 3119887).  Wattpad also does not appear to be skipping IDs, as I found some pairs of IDs in a row, and recent sequences of story IDs with very few missing (e.g., 159620101, 159620102, 159620104, 159620108, 159620110).  So while these platforms may not have assigned all possible IDs, but I can’t detect any regular pattern to what’s missing, as is the case for AO3.
I updated the slide up at the top, but in case you clicked through from an older reblog, here it is again:
Tumblr media
 /Update
AO3 and Wattpad both assign a new story ID to each new draft of a work, meaning that all unpublished works have URLs that don’t correspond to stories (edit: but as mentioned in the update above, AO3 doesn’t assign all possible IDs to stories).  FFN only assigns a new story ID at the time that a new work is published. All platforms also end up with some published works being deleted, either by the author or the platform (works can be deleted for being spam or violating TOS -- e.g., being explicit on FFN).  Thanks to Finn for this info -- see their post for more details.
As expected from the fact that it doesn’t assign story IDs for unpublished works, FFN has the lowest missing work rate fewer missing story IDs than Wattpad -- but it’s all due to deletions of previously published works (some done by FFN, which has done a number of mass deletions due to TOS changes, and some presumably by the works’ authors)  Wattpad has the highest missing story ID rate, but it’s unclear what that indicates. Many of these Wattpad works could be drafts that haven’t made it out of draft form yet. And some (maybe a lot) of the IDs may never have been assigned to a story in the first place; that is a side effect of some methods of database construction.   It also seems (based on notes in the summaries and titles) that on Wattpad it’s very common for authors to revise works that have already been published, and it’s possible that many authors use Wattpad’s “Unpublish” option to temporarily revert existing works to drafts.  I also found a few cases of spam/advertisements in the sample of 100 fanworks I hand classified, so possibly Wattpad has such a high missing works rate in part due to spam takedowns.
Detailed methods
I used AO3 Work Search to determine the exact numbers for AO3.
All sites assign higher story IDs (the numbers found in URLs) to more recent works, so on the remaining two sites, I found the highest newly published work ID I could and used it as a maximum.  For Wattpad, the max story ID was about 160M.  For FFN, it was about 13M.  I sampled 9000 URLs on Wattpad, of which 1176 had stories.  I sampled 3500 URLs on Fanfiction.net, of which 2048 had stories.  (Feel free to use the data for your own analyses.)
(Aside:  more recently, I’ve seen a few MUCH higher story IDs on Wattpad -- closer to 650M.  So I did several samples of 1000-2000 URLs using that higher number, and I couldn’t find any stories with IDs over 167M; it seems like there are very few with the much higher numbers.  I also double checked my belief that story IDs were assigned in order that drafts were created by graphing date published against story ID and found it to be accurate -- there were a few stories published long after their story IDs were assigned, but generally there was an increase in story ID by date published.)
In both cases, I drew the samples in batches of 500-2000 fanworks at a time, and I averaged the estimates I got from each subsample.  For Wattpad, I got a mean estimate of 20.83M fanworks overall (stdev = 1.42M; stderr = 0.50M) and 5.11M works in the “Fanfiction” genre (stdev = 0.60M; stderr = 0.19M).  For FFN, I got a mean estimate of 7.65M fanworks (stdev = 0.19M; stderr = 0.08M).
I found a kludgey way to search FFN that I *think* returned most/all of the works on the site.  The results contained 7.60M works (close to my estimate of 7.65M), so that also strengthens my confidence in my estimates.

Statistical Inference Solution Manuals
Statistics is nothing but the scientific way of gathering, examining, presenting, and expounding data. It is the highly sought-after interdisciplinary discipline which is used frequently in all scientific field as well as research. The inference draws from the statistical data through various methods and computational tools.
Impact on Statistics in our life:
 1) Weather prediction:
Weather often plays a significant role in our day-to-day life. With rapid deforestation and global warming, the vagaries of weather are perceptible. The computer simulation model on statistics predicts important information regarding the weather.
2) A potent means for the researcher :
With their statistical skill, they can unearth valid data. Without which it may incur losses in terms of money and data.
3) Insurance:
Insurance can find a place in almost every household. Some businesses apply statistical concepts to ascertain the risk factors of giving insurance.
4) Medical :
Before prescribing any drug, scientists are trying to find out the efficacy of it through statistics. These apart, there are other important applications of statistics.
5) Data Mining :
To put it simply- Data mining is the use of statistics in terms of analysing  and infusing what if model to find out pattern and trend from a huge amount of   data. The concept of data mining stems from Database Technology, AI, Machin  Learning and Statistics. Having said that, Data mining helps in extracting useful information from the heaps of data and thereby helping business to grow.
6) Financial Markets:
Statistics and probability can play a significant role in every human activities.
It helps in shaping effective monetary as well as fiscal policies. Besides, it also
helps developing finance models  such as bonds, currencies, equities, and more.
7) Pharmaceutical Domain:
The advancement of medicine is no doubt a boon for the  mankind. It has been
making our life more robust over the years. At the same time, one should bear in mind that is not an exact science. Some medicines work best and others may not work thats way. At this stage, statistics use in medicine for making the medicine and subsequently develops treatment for this malady. Statistics , however, tries to find out the desired effect of the medicine..
Want to jump on the bandwagon ?
The relevancy lies in the prospect of students' career progression. Many students dream that they want to be a strong in statistics and a compelling desire to be associated with the IT-oriented industry in order to further their career aspirations.
No doubt, its rosy opportunity entices students to a great extent. They naturally feel a ripple of excitement to see the potential projects this discipline ptoffers. As they drill-down in the core of the subject, troubles start rising its ugly heads in terms of not solving the ticklish questions. Hence, they seek for redressal
A silver line in the maze of facing tough questions:
Put down your worries into the dustbin.Statiscal Inference Solution Manuals are here to help you get rid of your academic woes. These solution manuals provide them a glimpse of hope and help them to regain their confidence.
 Beware of fake  service provider:
But there is a caveat- there are innumerable solution manuals providers are crowded in the online space. They are tomtoming the credibility of their services and eventually prove their ability to satisfy the students. The Auto-Memories Dolls’ holiday was ending peacefully.
How to spend the end of summer was mostly commonplace – watching the trees outside by the windowsill during the morning, taking strolls with an umbrella around the neighborhood at noon, reading books under the shade of trees at evening, and preparing for the next journey at night. When no one was looking, she would dismantle and reconstruct guns, as well as throw knives at leaves falling from trees in order not to let her arms become lax. But essentially, she was enveloped in serenity. That was the result of her adoptive mother’s influence in treating her like a child.
There were not many who would purposefully attempt to break her silence in the first place. After all, she was someone who instilled the feeling of nervousness in others. She had a reticent and cold beauty. She could cause time and the people in her surroundings to naturally stop.
“Violet. You... are coming with me.”
She was not someone suitable to invite to play.
The Flying Letters and the Auto-Memories Doll (Part 1)
Located in a narrow street away from the main avenue of Leidenschaftlich’s capitol city, Leiden, a lone building protruded, reigning amongst several small shops lined up together. The CH Postal Service was a fairly new company that had just entered the mail industry. A spire with a light green dome-shaped roof and a weather-bird on top could be considered the mark of said postal company. Surrounding the spire was a dark green roof, and the outer walls were made of red bricks that had been sunburned into a tasteful hue. On the arch-shaped entryway, where the agency’s name was printed onto a steel plate in golden letters, there was a bell that produced a merry sound whenever the doors were opened, so as to announce the arrival of customers. Inside the building, a counter could be seen right upon entry, which was specifically the reception desk of delivery items.
There were three floors; the first one was the postal reception, the second was the office and the spire of the third floor was the president’s residence. Currently, on the second floor, the employees of the office were challenging themselves while working desperately.
There was a date called the “closing day” in the company. During it, all transactions, reports related to them, invoices, proofs of payment and everything else involving the operation of the company were neatly cleared up for the month. For the clerks, it was a day of painful battling, as the closing work was added to their regular work.
“You said we’d go together, and that you’d take me there...” Amidst the scene of arduous fighting stood a young woman, directing a reproachful and depressed gaze at Hodgins. She tightly held onto the hem of her clothes and bit her lip as if to assert, “I am pissed”.
She was a beautiful woman with long dark hair and full of mature appeal. She wore an open bustier, which displayed her rich chest without any reserve whatsoever and was connected to her shoulder-to-elbow charcoal gray inner garment. She also had on a beads choker, a pendant, bangles, hand chain bracelets and rings made of precious metals. Her leather hot-pants were dyed blue and had golden embelishments. Her embroidery thread garter belt consisted of geometrical patterns and decorated only the bare skin from the middle of her tights to her knee-high boots. She was a person whose everything, from her outfit to her glossy beauty, was poison to the eyes. However...
“No way, no way! If you’re not taking me, I don’t want to go.”
...her actions were that of a child. She was stomping her feet.
“No, I mean, even if you say that, Cattleya...” Claudia Hodgins, the president of the CH Postal Service, smiled stiffly at her posture. “Look at this mountain of paperwork. It feels like it’s gonna hit me.”
On Hodgins’s desk lay a pile of forms bearing a menace that really did seem as if they were about to deal him a blow. He was applying stamps to them while speaking. His examination and approval were definite requirements for the various documents made by clerks. Perhaps because he blindly trusted the clerks, or because he lacked the will to read, he was simply pushing the papers over without confirming their contents.
“President Hodgins, give the documentation to me once you are done with it. Please take a look at these too.”
The conversation was interrupted. A stack of paperwork was added to the pile.
“Ah, sorry, Little Lux. Did you confirm them all?”
The one who had come in-between Cattleya and Hodgins was a girl with an innocent face. She had lavender-gray hair trimmed slickly above her shoulders. Although she wore glasses, upon a closer look, one would be able to see that the color of her eyes was different on each side. It was a conservative stereotype, but the scarf around her neck and gold berretta attached to the side of her head were subtle traits of a professional lady.
“I did. The ones that were revised are tagged. Please check them.”
Lux Sibyl, the girl who used to be worshipped as a demigod by a religious group in an isolated island, was now working uprightly at the CH Postal Service.
“Thank you. My secretary is the best. Even as an understatement, I love you.”
Lux replied with a hopeless expression to the lady-killer wink shot at her, “Enough of flattery, just please get your... get your arm moving. If only I had stopped you that time... Going on a trip with a stage actress, of all things... It was so obvious that you’d soon break up anyways... That time... if only I...”
“How cruel. You just hurt my heartbroken self even more, Little Lux...”
“If only I had made you do your work even if I had to tie you down, this wouldn’t have...”
Since his secretary was acting as though she had become involved in some incident and was inconsolable, Hodgins regained his seriousness. “I’m sorry. I’ll buy a stamping machine.”
Lux then spoke to Cattleya as if imploring, “And Cattleya. Please... don’t try to do anything to stop President Hodgins. Everyone’s clocking-out depends on President Hodgins’s progress. I want to leave as soon as possible today...”
The clerks that were silently doing their jobs nodded in unison at Lux’s words. For them, the time they would be set free from the office on that day was an extreme matter of life and death. Cattleya had been pretending not to notice it, but a concentrated pressure from withering occasional stares and voice tones pierced her back with an unsaid “those who intend to meddle should leave”.
“What’s with that...? Getting so stuck-up just because you’re the secretary. President’s secretary... how unfair. I wanna be a secretary too.”
“Cattleya, you’re an Auto-Memories Doll, right? Isn’t that better? ‘Getting stuck-up’, you say... I was just stating that though you may be on your day off, we are in the middle of work.”
Despite having a young appearance, on the inside, Lux had grown into a completely capable secretary. After having fled from the religious organization, she did her best to repay Hodgins and the company that had taken her in.
“President, leave the snacks for when you’re done with the documents.”
Hodgins’s hand, which had been attempting to take something from his desk’s drawer, retracted.
“What’s with that? What’s with that? What’s with that?! Days off aren’t defined for Auto-Memories Dolls, so there’s no helping it, right?”
Cattleya was willing to continue the quarrel, but before she realized it, Lux was answering the phone. The look in the latter’s eyes said “sorry about that”.
“I get it.”
It was obvious at first glance that everyone in the company was busy. She was also aware that she was disturbing them.
Nevertheless, not aiming to give up, the Auto-Memories Doll Cattleya showed a printed pamphlet to Hodgins, who had turned into the aforementioned stamping machine. “But it’s only once a year... that we can take part in the ‘Flying Letters’. I... I already wrote a letter, and I didn’t invite anyone else because President had said he would be taking me. I don’t want to go by myself. Attending a festival alone... isn’t that like a punishment?”
The words “Seventh Aeronautical Exhibition” were written in the pamphlet. Said exhibition would be held in the maneuvering area of the Leidenschaftlich army’s Air Force. It seemed to consist of aerial maneuver demonstrations and public displays of the army and the navy’s planes, as well as private ones gathered by volunteers. The “Flying Letters” that Cattleya had talked about was one of the programs. So-called “letters of encouragement to whomever picks them”, collected from civilians, would be scattered from the sky by elite pilots chosen from the army and navy. It was a romantic event, in which the participants were stimulated to send inspirational messages to the strangers that would pick their letters, as well as to themselves. It was the only festival on the continent in which letters fell from the sky. As the description stated that the sixth exhibition had happened several years before, it seemed the festival had been canceled for some time due to intensified wars.
She brought the pamphlet closer as if to make Hodgins kiss it, causing him to sneeze.
“See, I want to go too, Cattleya. But I had forgotten that today was the closing day...”
Cattleya’s eyebrows withdrew. Her amethyst orbs swerved with sadness. Her attitude was similar to a dog cub crying dejectedly.
A feeling of guilt grew within Hodgins. “Don’t make such a face, my cute lady. The festival involved in the exhibition will go on until nighttime, so I can join on the way. I mean, I also want to let my employees clock out early and go to the festival. But we won’t make it in time for the Flying Letters... I think. Well, I don’t know, but yeah, most likely.”
“I will... be alone until then?”
“Benedict... is... in the middle of deliveries, after all.”
“Never mind him. Why are you mentioning his name?” Her face going red, Cattleya attempted to overturn Hodgins’s desk. It was a strength that could never be imagined to come from those slender arms.
Hodgins hastily held back the desk. “Calm down, Cattleya. I get it. The only other available person close to your age is... Little Lux. Show me the business schedule of the employees.”
Although she was in the middle of a phone call, Lux handed Hodgins a notebook while talking cheerfully. The operational plans of the employees were registered in it.
Hodgins grinned. It was because he had found someone who seemed to be in a convenient condition. “Aah, Little Violet is off-duty.”
“Eh?” A slight rejection could be noted in Cattleya’s voice.
The mansion was located beyond a path of trees. Ruling among flowerbeds of extravagant colors with plants of several varieties in a luxurious and carefully tended lawn, as well as a farm growing seasonal vegetables, was the Evergarden residence, of which Patrick Evergarden was the current head. It was closer to being a castle than a manor. It had chalky white walls and an ultramarine roof. Its architecture was elegant and well-balanced, wholly symmetrical on both sides, from the spires to the windows.
As a gardener sighted Cattleya’s figure while she passed by, he shouted, “Miss Cattleya Baudelaire, right?”
Due to Hodgins having talked to them in advance, the gardener had accompanied her from the gates to the mansion, and once she arrived at the porch, a butler welcomed her.
“She will be here soon.”
As she waited with nothing to do in an anteroom, before long, Violet Evergarden appeared, just as the butler had said. “Cattleya...?”
It was not only because the massively thick red carpet tended to erase footsteps. Violet had showed herself without making a sound, dressed differently from her usual Auto-Memories Doll outfit. Her hair was loosely tied to one side and a flower ornament dangled next to her face. The word “lovely” was perfect to describe her neat, white one-piece with blue flower patterns. The small flowers were not simply dispersed, but had been designed to fall the way down from the top of her shoulders and middle of her chest. As Leidenschaftlich’s climate was still warm even though summer was ending, it seemed that one would be fine with just a dress, yet she wore a dark blue cardigan as well. It was probably meant to hide her artificial arms. The same old brooch stood on her chest.
“Heh, so you normally dress like this. It’s kinda like a... young mistress? Pretty cute. How nice.”
Violet replied, “It is my foster mother’s taste. More importantly, did something happen?” Her blue eyes seemed to say, “What is the matter that caused you to come all the way to my house? Answer quickly.”
“Yeah, kinda...”
Cattleya recalled her conversation with Hodgins. The hand that had been applying stamps had stopped for once, and he had told her how to coax Violet, who was someone shrouded in mystery, “Listen, if you’re going to persuade Little Violet... you gotta say that... it’s a mission given to her by me.”
He had seemed confident. Indeed, Violet gave off an impression of obedience and chastity whenever she spoke to Hodgins. However, it was in a different manner than how she probably treated other people.
——Honestly, this girl is so strange.
Cattleya knew she was a former soldier. She had belonged to Leidenschaftlich’s army along with Hodgins, the man Cattleya loved dearly. Amongst the members that Hodgins, who was already an odd one himself, had gathered to work at CH Postal Service, it was not so unlikely to have someone with a past of being an ex-militant in her personal history.
However, even without taking her history into consideration, Violet was a shady one.
She never showed a smile. Her speech was polite, yet she never once flattered anybody. With that, she put a distance between herself and others, but did not show any signs of despising loneliness, and was almost as a beautiful, heartless entity made of ice. Such was how Cattleya saw her.
“You... know... this... is something that had already been decided.”
That was why she was anxious as to whether those magical words would have effect. Would Violet listen to the order of anyone other than Hodgins? Even if she did listen, would they have a fun time?
——Still, that’d be better than going to the festival alone.
Reassuring her purpose, Cattleya opened her mouth, “Violet. You... are coming with me. It’s a mission that President Hodgins gave you. Until the President joins me, accompany me to the Aeronautical Exhibition.”
After she spoke authoritatively, a few seconds of silence ensued.
The straight-laced, taciturn, unsociable-looking and beautiful ice girl blinked many times, her long lashes going up and down, before inquiring with a face that seemed to express a question mark, “A... mission?”
“Yes, a mission.”
“Is it... really a mission?”
Cattleya averted her gaze from the reflection of her own flustered figure in Violet’s limpid blue orbs. “I-If... you think it’s a lie, you can ask President about it.”
“No. Today is the closing day and he must be busy, so I will refrain from making phone calls. I understand. If it is a mission requested by the President, I will accept it.” Along with being concerned about the closing day, unlike Cattleya, she had the consideration of an adult for her workplace.
As she received consent, Cattleya soon became nervous. She had a feeling that she was talking to a machine, a fairy, or perhaps a ghost – some sort of indefinite existence that she could not reach a mutual understanding with.
“Hey, will you really go with me?”
“Yes.”
“Really, really?”
“Really, really.”
“You... sort of don’t feel like you’re alive, but you are, right?”
“I am.”
“I’m just asking this as a matter of course, but the President is very attached to you, so, are you lovers?”
“That is not it.”
“What do you think of Benedict?”
“Benedict? He has high-rank combat abilities, and also surprisingly has leadership skills.”
They were quite rude questions, yet Violet answered them seriously without showing signs of minding it.
Cattleya immediately became lively with the various replies. She let the joy take over her and started jumping on the spot. “I’m satisfied that our interests are consistent. Since it’s settled, go get ready! Tell the people of the house that you’re going out. Also, Violet, get writing paper, envelopes and a fountain pen too. We’ll participate in the Flying Letters, after all.”
“‘Flying Letters’... If I am correct, that was one of the aerial display custom programs presented to the public by the army and navy, right?”
As expected of a former soldier, she was knowledgeable.
Cattleya asked if she had ever participated, and Violet mutely shook her head. “I have never watched it, but I have been told about it as a piece of information...”
Just who had been the one to tell her? Violet did not reveal it.
“Cattleya, is there nothing else necessary other than the writing paper and etcetera? Do I have permission from President Hodgins to carry arms?”
“There’s no need for weapons. What’s with you? That’s scary.”
“You said it was a mission, so...”
Violet did not understand the limits of things, and Cattleya was sometimes perplexed by her, but thankfully, the two of them were able to go outside together.
The maneuvering area of Leidenschaftlich’s army’s Air Force was located far away from the capitol city, Leiden. The directions to it were not too difficult. The easiest way to get from the capitol to it was either through riding shared carriages or trucks. When getting off at the stop, a forested area surrounded by trees would be on sight. It was a place so full of greenery that it would cause people who were accustomed to cities to become worried for a second as to where they had ended up at, but there was nothing to fear. Crossing a paved forest road while relying on signboards, they would shortly arrive at the maneuvering area, their destination.
The entry of ordinary citizens was normally prohibited, but there were no restrictions during the Aeronautical Exhibition. Authorized eating and drinking businesses established their shops around the exercise grounds and formed lined stalls. The military facility changed completely and turned into a place of festivities.
Men and women of all ages assembled at the venue. They were families of people involved in the army and navy personnel, general participants, avid airplane lovers who had come from distant places yearning to see the aerial displays, and many others. There were mostly males in the male-female ratio. Young girls like Violet and Cattleya could be considered minorities.
“Amazing, it’s so big. They normally practice here too... Look! Fighters? Are those fighters?” Cattleya did not hide her surprise at the warplanes being exhibited.
“That’s a reconnaissance plane, the Ptarmigan.” Meanwhile, Violet gave the exact name of the units. “Both the army and the navy each have Air Forces, but from the names of the planes, one can tell right away which of the two they belong to. The army names theirs after birds. It seems the navy names theirs after sea animals.”
The mysterious, beautiful women eagerly discussing about warplanes appeared peculiar to some extent.
Since the maneuver area usually functioned as a full-fledged military facility, there were many barred zones. Taking the space of the venue as a rectangular box, the exhibition of the military aircrafts was happening in the outskirts of its center. Surrounding it was a hangar, a stand-by lot for the army’s vehicles, a general resting spot for civilians, the actual headquarters of the Aeronautical Exhibition and a control tower built on its rooftop, hidden by a tent. Its inside could not be seen at all. A fence was laid around the headquarters and the control tower at a wide distance from both, and whoever was not part of the personnel was completely forbidden of entry.
One of the Aeronautical Exhibition’s highlights, which was a live coverage by the army’s publicity, was taking place at the headquarters.
“Please look at the front of the venue. Six fighters, the Sea Snakes, are raiding in. They are changing from a one-row line to a diamond-shaped battle formation. Do pay attention to this well-coordinated flight.”
The navy fighters flew over the maneuver area and passed by while showing off splendid flight techniques. As they soared, white smoke was left behind in the blue sky as a proof of their passage.
“The first pilot is Jude Bradburn from Leidenschaftlich’s Leiden. The second pilot is Henry Gardner from Bregand!”
All attendees looked up at the sky and cheered. An orchestra played music along with the heated commentaries, further enhancing the atmosphere in the place.
Cattleya opened the pamphlet that she had acquired in advance and confirmed the show time of the aircrafts currently on demonstration. Things seemed to be progressing according to the prescribed schedule. The Flying Letters were due afterwards.
She grabbed Violet, whose eyes had been stolen by the aerial maneuvers of the fighter planes, by the arm. “Hey, looks like the collecting of the Flying Letters will take a while, so let’s buy something at the stalls and watch it while eating. It seems the flight exercises will go on non-stop. Violet, is there anything you wanna eat?”
“So we are ensuring our meals? If that is the case, is it not better to go for something fitting to be conserved rather than prioritize its taste?”
Without looking at Cattleya, Violet was moving her neck to follow the units in flight. Cattleya stirred a finger close to her. As Violet turned her head, her cheek was spontaneously stabbed by said finger. It felt flaccid.
“Violet, look at me.”
Although the arm Cattleya had grasped was rigid, the cheek was soft.
——She’s enigmatic, and a bit creepy.
However, Cattleya was somewhat relieved. It was because she had come to know that girl also had soft parts.
“Please stop.”
She became happy to earn a reaction from Violet, even though it was resistance. “Don’t wanna. That’s punishment for not looking my way. Hey, I feel you’re misunderstanding it; even though this is a mission, it’s also for fun. We don’t need conserved food.”
Tumblr media
“‘Fun’...?”
“Don’t you... sometimes seem to have fun with Lux? Like, drinking tea and all.”
“Aah, yes. We have tea together.”
“That’s it. You’re gonna do that with me. We’re gonna eat, chat, and take part in the festival. It seems everyone from the company will be done with work in a bit, so we’ll join them afterwards.”
“This is... a mission, is it not?”
“It’s a mission. A great mission. A super great mission.” Cattleya forcefully had Violet, who was making emphases and seeking confirmation, walk in the direction of the stalls.
“I would like tangible content details on exactly what sort of mission ‘having fun’ is.”
“You’re talking kinda difficult; you aren’t used to having fun, right? That’s fine, this big sis will teach it to you.”
Violet stared at their joined hands as if it were something odd. Even so, she did not shake and disentangle hers, simply following behind Cattleya like an infant bird.
The duo visited the food stalls from one end to another of the fair, buying enough to be almost unable to carry everything in their arms and sharing it with each other. They softly narrowed their eyes upon observing children run after the flying fighters, harshly waved off men who carefreely called out to them due to being two unaccompanied women, and appreciated the commentaries from the army’s press while applauding the several warplanes passing by. They also had personal experiences with playground equipment, such as merry-go-rounds and darts, at a so-called emigrational amusement park, blending with the children. Although Cattleya had primarily been on guard regarding Violet, whose personality she could not to understand, she was able to think of ways to enjoy herself with the latter due to her characteristic amicability and liveliness.
“Cattleya, please wait. Cattleya.”
“Hey, this is delicious. Really delicious. Okay, open your mouth.”
“I do not wish to eat.”
“It’s a mission, so open your mouth.”
“Are you not just thinking I will go along with anything if you say it is a mission?”
“Aaahn. Hey, it’s gonna fall. If it does, it will be your fault.”
She was surprisingly weak to pressure, and therefore, Cattleya probably thought she was cute as a girl younger than herself whom she was taking along on her stroll. Acting as an older sister, too, was something comfortable for Cattleya.
After playing around for a while, the two of them decided to take a break. Even though it was the ending of summer, exposure to sunlight for a long time outside would cause increased fatigue. They sat on a bench at the general resting place, which was covered by a large tent that blocked the Sun, so that the civilians could cool down. They were able to watch the flight drills from there.
“Still not done?”
“We do not know the precise destination of these letters. Moreover, they must be of encouragement. This calls the abilities of an Auto-Memories Doll into question.”
Violet was writing for the Flying Letters. The gathered messages would be handed over to the pilots and scattered by airplanes from above the venue. Propeller-type light planes that would serve as the letters’ deliverers had already begun collecting them. The people in charge became the center of attention, women and children swarming over them all at once. That was possibly because their fuselage of a strong yellow color shone strikingly against the blue sky.
With nothing to do as she had finished writing her letter, Cattleya decided to prod her nose into Violet’s. The other was gradually becoming better at writing mails.
Seeking responsiveness, Cattleya pouted. “Hey, nobody will know who wrote it, so you can just say whatever you like.”
“This is no good. I will redo it.” Violet tucked the letter that she had just written into an envelope. She took out a new writing paper, but looked unable to write a single character. “What did you write, Cattleya?”
As she was apparently being asked for instructions, Cattleya answered while puffing out her ample bosom even more, “‘You are lucky for picking up my letter! Something good will definitely happen to you. Even if it doesn’t, it’s not like you will die’.”
“Is this what you wrote?”
“Yeah.”
That seemed very much like Cattleya. However, it appeared not to work as advice for Violet.
“What~? Do you not write letters outside of work or something? Is it really that troubling?”
“I have long stopped writing personal letters. I only write at work.”
Although it only happened for an instant, Cattleya was taken by the slight change in Violet’s expression. She was already someone with a disposition for getting close to others, but diminished the distance between herself and Violet even more. “This topic looks interesting. Why is that? Tell me.”
Violet moved away. Cattleya came closer. Violet moved away again. In the end, the two of them wound up perfectly glued to each other at a corner of the bench.
“Why should I?”
“Because it seems appealing. Why did you stop writing? Should I try guessing? The addressee was a man, right? And also someone special. The kind of man you’d be interested in the most, save for a parent or sibling.”
“How did you know the gender?” Violet gazed directly at Cattleya for the first time.
“Your clients and mine are different. My customers are... mostly young women writing love letters. This is also the so-called ‘maidens in love’. It’s people who want to know what they should do to have a boy on the palm of their hand. Or guys who don’t understand women and want to know what they should do to make a girl look their way. I’m often asked for tips.”
“Is it not enough to simply poke her shoulder and call her name?”
“It’s not in that sense.” Cattleya flicked Violet’s forehead with her finger. “Hey, what kind of person is he? The one you like, I mean.”
“That... is not the... case.”
“So you hate him?”
“There... there is no way...”
Cattleya was unable to suppress a smile.
——What do I do? She’s so fun to tease.
Violet Evergarden – a secretive, straight-laced and expressionless taciturn. A woman made of iron, who never hesitated. She was crumbling at a single sentence from Cattleya.
“Then, isn’t there no option other than like? It’s not... the normal kind, right? That’s not what your face is saying. Don’t underestimate me. I make money out of including love consultations in my amanuensis job.”
Violet opened and closed her mouth, eyes darting to many directions, which showed she was at a loss.
——She’s like a doll that has just been given a heart. How weird.
Cattleya knew nothing of Violet’s past, and therefore merely treated her as what she was – a teenage girl.
“Hey. I said ‘hey’.”
She only wished to get along with her.
“Hey, what kind of person was he?”
She was alienated to the effects of her actions on Violet. She believed what lay inside the box that she was attempting to open was a gemstone.
“What do you call him?”
But what resided in Violet Evergarden’s heart...
“‘Major’.”
...could not be compared...
“‘Major’. Isn’t that cool? So he’s a soldier. You’re an ex-soldier, after all. How old is Major? What about his looks?”
...to a gemstone.
“I never asked. He was most likely about to become thirty years old.”
“No way. He’s much older than you. So the age difference between you two is... about the same as you and the President?”
Violet had not talked about that person for a long time.
“His hair was dark, but of a different shade than yours, Cattleya...”
She had described how he was as an individual before, but had never dug too deeply. Although he was someone that both she and Claudia Hodgins had in common, the two of them avoided touching the subject around one another.
Violet averted her eyes from the paper that she had not yet written anything on to the crowd. Soldiers wearing the purplish black uniform that she also used to were part of it. Even though the war was over, the skies had cleared and she no longer lived in the days when she did not know how to write a single word, that multitude and the clicking of military shoes brought her back to the time that she had spent in a city of lanterns.
Forever and ever, the person she pursued was only one.
“He had emerald green eyes...”
He was an extremely beautiful being.
“He took me in, raised and used me.”
The two of them were a tool and her master.
“But, he is not here anymore.”
Although she was his tool, she had failed to protect him.
“Gilbert is dead.” Hodgins’s words replayed in Violet’s head over and over, accompanied by a heaviness and agony similar to that of a curse.
“Did Major go somewhere far away?”
“Yes. He has gone far away. He has... not returned.”
“Are you still waiting?”
“Yes.”
At Cattleya’s questions, willingly or not, Violet wound up thinking…
“I am waiting.”
...about the answer to the words of that day, which she did not give, resisting it while claiming she did not understand them.
“I have been... repeatedly told to stop doing so. However, no matter what, I... I...”
“I love you.”
“I love you, Violet.”
“Are you... listening?”
“I... like you.”
“Violet, ‘love’... is...”
“‘To love’ is... to think that you want to protect someone the most in the world.”
“...find myself... waiting for Major to come.” Her face was of someone enduring pain.
That was the moment Violet showed her most humane expression out of the ones Cattleya had witnessed. A small transformation had occurred within that awkward girl. It was a quiet move, which people with abundant emotions would not consider a manifestation of feelings.
——Aah. A realization dawned within Cattleya.
They were not yet intimate. Not friends, either. It was not as if she knew anything about Violet, but she felt as though she had come to.
——He took most of the happy parts of her heart with him. Is that why she doesn’t have much emotion? Cattleya speculated.
“You... have a crush on someone who isn’t here anymore.”
Unlike what Cattleya had imagined, the bush that she had been pricking was actually the entryway to a deep forest.
“‘Crush’?”
The young woman wandering inside said forest was not even aware of how she had become lost in it – she had a blindfold on and did not know how to take it off, left alone to live through fumbling about. Cattleya thought of it as a pity. In reality, that was not a conversation they should be having at such a place.
“What is... a ‘crush’?”
The doll whose heart had been taken away – her colleague who was younger than herself – did not know what infatuation was.
“No, it’s love already.”
“‘Lo-ve’...?”
The maneuver area was more crammed than when they had arrived. The crowd was increasingly more frantic.
Cattleya pointed at the people walking by. Everyone was of differing genders and ages. Each led lives packed with hardships that could not be seen through naked eye.
“There are many types of it: fraternity, friendship, siblinghood, companionship. Yours is romantic love.”
Harmonious couples that served as examples of it were everywhere. The world overflowed with romance in a natural manner.
Yet Violet denied it. She shook her head, furrowing her brows and biting her lip. “I... cannot... fall in love.” she obstinately negated.
“You did, though.”
“No, I cannot. I do not understand it.”
As seen from the sides, they probably appeared to be having an argument. It was not a fight, yet neither of them backed a single step. One claimed it was love. The other claimed it was not. Both were running counter.
Though steeped in irritation, Cattleya still refused to give in. “Even I... can’t say for sure what something like that is. Love is uncertain, and I don’t get the romantic one very well. But I can tell when it happens. People in love would also be able to tell if they saw you. Your love is that type. Even if it’s towards a person you’re unable to see...”
Once the words “a person you’re unable to see” spilled from Cattleya’s mouth, Violet’s blue eyes quivered in sorrow. Hearing them from someone else weighed much more than saying them to herself. The expression she sometimes had on was one that would cause anybody to admonish her with a, “See, you’re making a face like that, so how come?”
“No, I cannot. I really... cannot... Major has...” still, Violet rebuffed it. Her long blond lashes were down. As Violet hung her head, her gaze went towards her own chest.
As always, her emerald green brooch lay there. It sparkled brilliantly, never fading.
“Major has...”
Even through springs of dazzling moonbows, summers of early rains, autumns of raging gold-leaf winds or winters of congealing frosty nights, just like the existence of the man named Gilbert Bougainvillea that resided within Violet, it would never fade.
“Major has passed away.” the words she whispered in that very instant were exceedingly cruel.
The clock needle between Cattleya and Violet stopped for once. That did not happen in actuality, but the two of them did not make a single movement, as if time had truly come to a halt. Their blinking and breathing was mowed by the world’s time axis for a second.
Once time finally started flowing again, Cattleya could only give a staggered reply, “E-Eh?” Her voice squeaked.
“He is dead. I was unable... to protect him... so Major... died. Even though I was his tool, shield and sword.”
Cold sweat slowly traveled down Cattleya’s back.
——Her heart was stolen... not by someone that’s just not around, but that is dead?
“That’s a joke, right?” Cattleya asked, but received no response from Violet. She failed an attempt to force a smile, which came out as a half-laugh. Her face twitched. At the indelicacy of the things that she had been saying until that point, her breath caught in her throat and she could not properly swallow her saliva. “Violet, did this person... die in the Great War?”
“Yes.”
“For real?”
“So I was told. This brooch... stayed with me as a relic.”
Ever since Cattleya had first met her, the object had been twinkling on her chest. She had witnessed Violet touching it every now and then with her artificial fingertips countless times. She had always wondered if it was some sort of protection charm.
There was a lot more that she had wanted to say in a rapid succession, yet her attitude was unwittingly precautious. Something buzzed within her.
“But, you... don’t... believe that... right?”
A thrill similar to an unpleasant presentiment crawled its way through Cattleya’s entire body. For Violet, the response to that question could be a taboo.
“Hey, answer seriously.”
As she remained silent, her profile, which Cattleya used to only see as dispassionate, was now reflected in the latter’s eyes as something solitary.
“I...”
The unpleasant disruption creeped through Cattleya’s entire being, and she wished so badly to spit it out that she could not stand it. “You... don’t believe it, right? You did say... that you were waiting for him.”
She wanted to know the answer.
“But, President Hodgins has—”
“It’s fine; tell me what you yourself think.”
“Yes...” like a criminal accepting a conviction, Violet confessed her sin, “I believe... that Major... is alive.”
Just for how long had she continuously thought about that? Perhaps she had been in such a state ever since being informed of his death. Even as she lamented in anguish, even as she attempted to destroy the hope that kept her attached to reality, she might still have denied it all, telling herself that he was alive.
“You... You...”
“What the hell are you doing?” was what Cattleya wanted to scream.
Romantically yearning for someone who was far away and blindly loving someone who was deceased were two different things. Just as with Violet and Cattleya, physical distance could be overcome with effort. However, the dead could never return.
“What you’re saying... is the same as getting your arms back!”
Simply spending her time unreasonably through doing something so fruitless, never allowing anyone else to love her beautiful self and believing in the existence of a dead person was a waste, and Cattleya wanted to lecture her into stopping immediately. There was substitution both for her arms and for the man of her affections.
“Do you plan to live like this forever from now on? You, Violet...”
“I am aware.” Violet said right away. “It is useless. There is no meaning to it. There is no gain from it. But without Major, I am the same. I have no meaning.”
“Would it be no good if it were someone else? Even if it’s hard now, he will definitely become just a memory one day, so while there’s still time...”
“No... no.” It was almost as though she were proclaiming war against everything that lived. “Major Gilbert Bougainvillea is the only one for me.”
Cattleya stiffened with her mouth agape. Perhaps because a popular unit had passed by in the sky above, cheers rose in their surroundings.
It was as if Violet was there, yet not. That was the bizarre feeling that those strong blue orbs brought about.
——What’s... with this girl? How can she manage to make people this sad, as if cutting them open?
Her values differed too much from Cattleya’s. Feelings that had nowhere to go swirled within the latter’s chest painfully.
“I understand that this conduct of mine makes people uncomfortable.”
What had she had to live through to develop so much stubbornness?
“Do ignore me. Please... leave me be.”
“You’re... an idiot, aren’t you?”
Even if it were criticized as futile and she were stigmatized as irrational for many years, she would most likely continue to believe it. Even with someone telling her “it’s no use; quit it”, she would merely cover her ears.
“Yes. I am an idiot... and a fool.”
She only desired one person.
Cattleya slapped her own forehead with one hand and growled like a dog. Thinking too much had her tremendously heated-up, and her head started to hurt. She was currently even more feverish than when coming up with phrases during amanuensis activities.
——This is no good.
Violet had always, always carried a wish.
——Even someone not so smart like me can tell.
“I want to see you, I want to see you”.
——This is like threatening to push down a child crying by a cliff.
She had been praying while firmly grasping her brooch.
——I can’t blame her.
Such idiocy was Violet Evergarden herself.
As if vomiting a silver poison, Cattleya said bitterly, “Got it. I got it. You’re... stupid, and... I think... it would be great if you cut it out... I seriously do, but I also think... there are things... that can’t... be helped.”
The shine of those blue eyes changed. “Really? President Hodgins tells me to stop it.”
She patted Violet’s shoulder with a plop. Cattleya actually wanted to side with Hodgins, but she also wanted at least herself to be Violet’s ally.
“That’s because love is necessary for living. Isn’t love like a symbol of happy things? Couples get married, and one of them dies at some point... but the other relies on the memories they have of that person; something like that. It doesn’t have to be romance... the love that you receive is never gone. Parents also count. I... ran away from home and was taken in by President Hodgins. There... were many moments of loneliness for me since I had no acquaintances here. I had terrible parents, but the times when they caressed my head... those kinds of things... whenever I was desolate, I would always end up remembering them...”
Violet, who had not known about Cattleya’s circumstances, replied with a, “Is that so?”
The two of them were now finally speaking face-to-face. Their conversation was one-sided no more.
“So love... is a... necessity?”
“It is. What do you rely on to live? You’ve had times in your life until now in which you were treated kindly, and things and words that you were happy to receive, right? It’s because they are... accumulated inside of you... that you are alive.”
“Bu... t...” Violet said in pauses, “even if I had nothing, I... would have been living.”
Cattleya tilted her head to the side. She did not understand the meaning of those words.
“Even now, I am alive. I cannot forget about Major. That is why... this is not love.”
Cattleya did not know that Violet used to live alone in an isolated island. She concluded on her own that Violet living even while having nothing referred to the period before she had met the major.
“Violet, hey.”
“That... is not my case. I am a tool, so to begin with, things of this sort that are...”
“Listen to me. A ‘tool’... what are you saying? Is it... because you’re an ex-soldier? You mean warriors are tools? Aren’t you... being rude to the people who protected this country?”
“That is not it. Ever since way before, I... was a tool, so if I do not... remain as one...”
Perhaps due to Violet not being able to express herself very well, Cattleya strongly gripped her automated fingers.
“I will be of no requirement for Major.”
Once she did so, they could not easily be untangled.
“I am not a person. I am no good... if I am not a tool. If I do not stay as a tool... I will be unable to fight properly. I would also lose the right of wishing to be by Major’s side. For the sake of wishing to be beside Major, and for being someone’s tool, things of that nature... must be inhibited.”
Cattleya’s head, still tilted, continued leaning sideways more and more, until it seemed like she would fall from the bench. “Wait, I wanna get this straight.” She raised her palm a little, restraining her position.
“All right.” Violet obediently consented. She waited for Cattleya to sort everything out.
“Your Major is dead.”
“Yes.”
“But you like him and have always been waiting for him. You believe he’s alive.”
“I do believe that he is living.”
“I think that’s love. You’re in love too. But you say that’s not it... because you might stop being useful for the deceased Major otherwise.”
“Yes.”
“You’re forcing yourself into not knowing love... and wanting to be a tool... because it’s a way for you to be with him. I don’t get what you’re... saying. You, Violet... I mean, there’s no reason for you to fight anymore, right? Major passed away, and you’re no longer a soldier.”
“Yes.” Maybe due to such reality being unfavorable for Violet, her answer came out low.
“You left the army, and now you’re working at our place, right? Do you understand that your motive to deny it by saying that you don’t need love and that it’s not love doesn’t exist anymore?”
“I... am... aware.”
Violet fell silent after that. She was pondering on what to say. Averting her orbs from hers and Cattleya’s laced fingers, she raised her face after looking down for a while. As she was at last about to open her mouth, Violet suddenly widened her eyes significantly.
She had found something.
What was reflected in her big, jewel-like blue irises was a tall man. The man continuously appeared and disappeared within the crowd. Her hand naturally stretched towards him.
“...jor.” Violet said something in an awfully reduced tone, lips trembling.
The man had lustrous black hair.
“Hey, I won’t be able to understand it if you stay quiet. Then why is it that you refer to yourself as a tool?” Tired of waiting for the other’s response, Cattleya cut the stillness and called out to her.
As she did so, Violet abruptly stood up. Cattleya was surprised at her serious profile.
“S-Sorry. Did you get angry?” she asked fearfully, and Violet replied with a “no”.
“In case...” Violet took one, two steps away from the bench, acting as though her heart was not there, drawn into the direction of the crowd.
“Violet?”
As her name was called, Violet turned back towards Cattleya for once. “In case that person is alive, this is for the sake of being able to function properly... if a time in which he would need me comes. Cattleya, I will excuse myself for a little.” Her expression was no longer the one of just a short while before, empty as a ghost.
“Eh, wait...! Where are you going?!”
“I must go after him. I will definitely make it back to the mission.”
“After who!?”
Who was it that she had to chase, even it meant leaving Cattleya behind?
Cattleya got up in a haste as well. However, their belongings and letters ended up dropping and rolling down at her feet.
“My... former user.” After saying only that, Violet vanished into the mass of people.
Still standing, Cattleya was dumbfounded. “Eh, Major?” It finally came to her who the person was. “Violet, hey, wait.”
Nevertheless, it was too late. She was already gone. Since she was calm and delicate, her feet almost did not seem so fast, yet her agility was indeed that of a soldier.
“I’m alone, you know.” Cattleya grumbled, although her shock surpassed her solitude. As she had no other choice, she picked up the belongings that had fallen and scattered – fountain pens, writing papers, envelopes, the letter she herself had written.
And...
“Ah.” She found one more letter lying on the ground. It was not her own.
That was Violet’s unfinished message. She had put it in an envelope and left it on her lap as it was. It was the one that she had claimed to be unable to compose appropriately and had stopped writing.
Cattleya had not noticed it when Violet was writing, but once she took it in her hands, she thought it was a rather charming item. Since Auto-Memories Dolls frequently used paper and envelopes for writing on people’s behalf, those were often mass-produced by the companies they belonged to. Even so, of course, they would prepare ones fitting for their clients to have at hand, but what Violet had brought from home was obviously different in quality. A bordering of silver roses as drawn on a white paper that felt good to the touch. She had most likely bought it with her own savings.
——Even though she had said that she didn’t write personal letters anymore...
People who had the habit of writing letters would be able to tell that those were treasured articles. They were selected in a way that the marvelousness of the paper and envelope would already be enough to convey the respect of the sender towards the addressee. They could not be guaranteed as decent just from being expensive. But the ones that had been chosen emanated prominence just by looking.
Cattleya stared at the direction Violet had disappeared into. The figure of a girl running with her golden hair swaying was not there anymore.
“This is punishment for leaving me by myself.” With mean spirit and curiosity, Cattleya decided to try reading what was inside.
Afterwards, once Violet came back as she had stated, Cattleya would tease her about it. Since the latter had said she was unable to write it properly, the contents were unmistakably boring. It was with that in mind that Cattleya had skimmed through the paper.
“Foolish girl.”
The inside was not what Cattleya had expected. She soon finished reading, for it was only one sheet. She slowly traced Violet’s handwriting with her fingertips.
——I wonder why. Why... did she have... to write like this...
What was written in there were private affairs completely unrelated to Cattleya. She had only just become able to talk to the other on that day. There was a limit to how much empathy she could feel.
——...with words that... seem to gouge people’s hearts?
Nevertheless, a film of tears gradually formed in her amethyst eyes. She could not bear to imagine how Violet had felt during the conversation they had had on that very day, or what sort of memories she had been living with.
The contents of the letter were:
Are you well? Has anything changed? Where are you right now? Do you not have any troubles?
Spring, summer, autumn and winter have gone by, and repeat on forever, but only the season in which you are here does not come. Whenever I am waking up, falling asleep or feeling hazy, I find myself looking for your figure. I do not dream often, so I feel as if I might forget your appearance. Repeatedly, repeatedly, I replay memories of you in my head.
Are you really nowhere anymore? I have walked so much around the whole world. I have been to many countries. You were not in any of them. I have not found you. Still I search. Even after having been told that you had passed away, still I search.
I am following my order. I am alive. I live, live and live. What is there after life is over? Although I do not know, I merely keep on living. Even so—
Violet grasped the arm of the black-haired man. “Please wait.”
The man, who had turned around, possessed the emerald green orbs so typical of the Bougainvillea.

for the ask meme 1, 6, 19, 23, 35, 42 and 53 :D

Oh wow, that was fast, anon! Thank you! :D Let us see, then.
1. Tell us about your WIP!
Well then! What can I say without big spoilers… Reconfiguration Chapter 16 is my focus right now. It’s going to be three scenes long, back-and-forth point of view, I’ve got 1016 words done thusfar, and 3043 words in notes to translate into proper exposition- and going by past trends of the final result being 2-3 times the length of detailed notes, that means the final product will likely be 7,000-10,000 words. And I would call the overall tone of this chapter... sweet. A lot of undercurrent kind of stuff. There are a couple of right-in-the-heart moments, but overall it’s a soft piece. I’m enjoying it (even though I’m amped for chapter 17!)
I won’t have a-for-sure uninterrupted chance to work on it again for a week, but it’s there and in a good spot right now!
6. Favorite character you’ve written?
OH MAN, THAT IS TOUGH, uh… the ever impossible question of Atem vs Yuugi… I will say that I do enjoy writing Atem more solo, but that may just be because Yuugi is a much more reserved/reactionary character, so he shines best in company (particularly with his friends/Atem) vs Atem, who is like a walking source of interesting scenes. When it comes to their characters, I love them both.
But if we’re talking my own character creations, definitely Jeu Ravin from Gambling With Destiny. I’ve poured a lot into that person… Though I’m pretty proud of The Devourer, as well.
19. How do you cope with writer’s block?
Despair. xD
Okay, but seriously, it depends on if we mean a motivation block, energy block, or technical block. By which I mean– when I’m just not feeling a work or a scene, I explore if I can cut the scene all together (trust me, if it’s because you don’t like a scene, chances are it’s not that good anyways and can be exposited/revised somehow) or work on something else that is grabbing my attention. If it’s an energy block… I just have to take care of myself. I had that for a couple of weeks recently, and I just did not write anything. In that case, I sat down and put together a realistic view of how fast I could write and the results I could expect. (Example– I planned out that if I took off a few weeks here and there, gave myself ample wiggle room, and focused hard on the piece, I could probably have Reconfiguration done in time for Xmas this year. Hooray! That was very encouraging. And if it’s a techNIQUE block, like I can’t figure out how to move forward the scene… I usually find it’s I just don’t like what I just wrote, so I back up a few lines/paragraphs and hit enter a lot to move the lines out of sight, and try to rewrite the scene bit. If I like that better, I erase the original version, and move forward with the rewrite.
I just did that with the first 200 words of Reconfiguration chapter 16, actually. I discovered after I retried that I just really wanted the scene to be in a different character’s perspective!
23. Most anticipated upcoming books?
…Not sure I have any? I mean, I’m pretty excited to read the new posthumous Elizabeth Peters book, but I’m working through the entire Amelia Peabody series before I get to it. I also aim to get through the Agatha Christie & Sherlock Holmes novels in time…. I don’t even have actual hope anymore with The Winds of Winter. =_=
35. Post the last sentence you wrote
“I’m afraid I only have time for one game today, since I need to get to practice this afternoon… and shouldn’t you be playing right now?” she asked suddenly, pinning a flat eye and raised brow on Jounouchi– who blinked blankly back at her before eying the score board.
42. How many drafts do you usually write before you feel satisfied?
One. No, seriously. I write very slowly, with a lot of prep work in story outlining and chapter outlining and long, detailed notes, but what you would see published gets maybe one-two edits before I toss it up. I’ve never been able to break that need to hold onto what I’ve written– so re-writing GwD is going to be an experience.
53. What is the first line of your WIP?
“No way!”
…yeah, that’s it. xD Guess which character that is!
But yes, THANK YOU FOR THE ASKS, these are always fun.

Handplates: Tempus CH 4 Wingdings
Handplates is a really cool if dark take on the Papyrus/Sans/Gaster origin story by @zarla-s and if you haven’t seen it already, I highly recommend it. This is a spin off of that in which a human enters their lives. This takes place some time before Justice falls. Tempus(Patience) would be the fifth soul. Some things may be inaccurate, but please be patient with me. I just need to get it out of my head and I need some feedback. I am reposting some chapters because I have revised a few things for greater accuracy. ~Miamouse
“Don't get used to this. We’re taking it easy because you are still recovering.” Gaster was giving Tempus a series of IQ tests. They were alright, not too taxing, but there were a lot of them. Tempus was so glad she was left handed. Everything was in wingdings, so it took a bit longer to write out than normal letters. Doing all that with a throbbing hand would be torture.
She hadn't noticed until she started reading the tests, but she realized had also been speaking in a style that reminded her of the symbols ever since she started talking to Gaster. Sure, she wrote messages in wingdings to her friend, but that never changed the way she or her friend talked, as far as she knew.
It was weird to think that she started speaking like that automatically when faced with someone else who spoke it. The boys spoke it too, which made sense given Gaster taught them everything and they seemed to have no contact with anyone else.
“Have I been talking....different this whole time?” Tempus asked, not sure how to put it.
“Less talking, more writing.” Gaster said, but he thought a moment all the same. Maybe this was on his mind too; one of the things that he wanted to find out about her. “When our fight started, you were speaking like most people around here do, and while I understood you, it was easier to tune you out. But the moment you chose to make a special effort to communicate with me, when you signed and voiced at the same time, You started speaking wingdings and haven't stopped since. So you were unaware of it? That is noteworthy.” Gaster seemed thoughtful.
Tempus was thoughtful too. It was a bit to process. She didn't question him further about it. Could she turn it off if she wanted to? Or was it something she couldn't help and just happened or didn't happen depending on what context she was in? She started writing in ‘normal’ English, then erased it and continued in wingdings. She sighed in relief. She could stop if she wanted to.
Gaster noticed her erasing, it was the first time she had done so. “Is it starting to get difficult for you?” he said sincerely. He seemed more focused on learning about her abilities at the moment than treating her like a human. Her use of wingdings worked in her favor; made her less them and more us.
“No, I was just checking something.” she said this in ‘normal’ English. She had only gone a day without speaking it, but it already felt heavy on her tongue. Maybe she couldn't quite switch it on and off like she thought. That kind of scared her. She heard of people losing their language over time, but this seemed like it was happening too fast.
“Refrain from speaking like that. I must insist you continue using wingdings. It will make it easier for me to deal with you.” Gaster said. That didn't help quell her fears of language loss. So she wasn't even allowed to speak regular English? This was just peachy.
* * *
After several hours, 3-T had finished all the packets Gaster had prepared for that day. This was quite a bit faster than anticipated. She seemed to have a work ethic closer to 2-P than 1-S. At the same time she didn't seem to struggle through like 2-P would. That could just mean she wasn't putting her full effort in, like 1-S would, and only made it look like she was working hard. In any case, that was enough for the day so he sent her back to her cell with an apple and some gram crackers as a reward for following orders without complaint.
As Gaster went over Subject 3’s preliminary IQ tests, he had to admit the results were not disappointing. She(it was too much effort to continue forcing his thoughts to call her it’) excelled in many areas. When it came to numbers, she was almost, but not quite on par with subject 1. It took her a bit longer to work the problems out, and at times she used solving methods Gaster had never seen, so he wasn't sure weather to call them ‘correct’ or not. She got the answer, but it could have been luck.
With words and reading comprehension,  she seemed to be a few degrees better than subject 1. It was harder to tell since 1-S didn't put his full effort into this part of the tests, though that in itself was an indication that it wasn't his strong suit. 3-T seemed to enjoy reading more than math, except she was reading symbols that were not native to her, so the results were skewed there too. She was bright. There was no doubt. She managed to talk him out of killing her after all. Not just any human could do that. There had to be something going on in her skull.
He took a look at the questionnaire, a bunch of non intelligence based questions to get a grasp of her background. Age: 11 (the boys were judged to be about 10 since their growth had been accelerated.) Date of birth: 8/24(Just passed. It was September 9th. So barely over 10) Height 4’ 10” (147 cm. Just a bit shorter than Papyrus at 149 cm) weight 80 lbs (36 kg. Considerably more than the boys, but that made sense considering all of the flesh attached to her bones. For a human, she may have been a bit under weight. He couldn't be sure, his memory of humans were hazy, but she appeared to be on the thin side.)
Favorite color: Purple(expected cyan but at least it wasn't pink.) Favorite number: 3 squared(9, interesting way to put it) Favorite food: spaghetti (convenient) Favorite book: The Princess Bride. (Never heard of it. Some sort of romance novel? Dull. Expected something better from someone who excelled at reading. Maybe Dr. Alphys heard of it.) Favorite music : film scores (not bad, but he preferred classical himself.) Favorite subject: Both Sans and Papyrus are great. (Really? Did she think that was clever or something? He made a note to be as careful with words around her as he was with 1-S. Given the opportunity,  it seemed she would also twist them.) Gaster’s conclusion from all this? Things were not going to be dull with this human around.
* * *
The lights went out. The day was over. They could relax. It had been a good day, a restful day, a day without pain.
“Finally he’s gone! He is gone right? Lights out means he went home or whatever, right?” Tempus asked from her cell across the hall.
“yes, at least, he never shows up while the lights are out. experiments are over for today. he didn't hurt ya this time right? you seemed ok.” sans said.
“Yeah, I’m fine. He just gave me a bunch of written tests. Though he did say he was going easy on me, implying he has something worse up his sleeve,” Tempus said.
“It might not be as bad as you think. It could just be harder tests...or something. They don't always hurt, sometimes it’s even fun!” Papyrus said hopefully. Even he knew it was a bit of a stretch to call the puzzles ‘fun’ but it did feel good when you got it right. She seemed smart like Sans. She would do well here.
Papyrus saw her smile a little in the dark. The dark made it harder to see, but not much for him or Sans. Tempus was different that way. They discovered last night she couldn't see as well in the dark. They were worried at first, until she explained it was a ‘human’ thing. “OK, Papyrus. Maybe you’re right. Hey, maybe he’ll play chess or something with me tomorrow. That could be fun I guess.” she said.
“ya know, he might. he seems to like that test,” said sans. “he’s good, even i have a hard time against him sometimes.”
“That's cuz he’s the one who taught you and he knows you two so well. Heh heh heh! He better not underestimate me. I’m the #3 junior chess champion where I’m from!” Tempus said, suddenly full of energy. Papyrus didn't quite know what a ‘junior champion’ was, but the way she said it, it sounded good.
“That’s the spirit, Tempus!” Papyrus said.
Sans yawned. He sure liked to sleep, but his yawn had a point, “We should get some rest for whatever happens tomorrow,” said Papyrus.
Once they all laid down, Tempus started making some quiet noise. “Hmm Hmm, Hmm Hmm, Hmm Hmm Hmm…” it was odd, but somehow...nice.
“Tempus, what are you doing?” asked Papyrus.
“Oh, am I disturbing you? I can stop. Humming just helps me sleep sometimes,” said Tempus.
  “humming?” asked Sans.
“I guess Gaster never taught you about music….it’s...making pretty sounds. Humming is one way to do that...it might be difficult for someone without lips. Maybe it will be easier to understand if I just sing- put words to music.” With that Tempus started to sing, “+₩!Ω{£€ +₩!Ω{£€  £!++£€  $+@ฯ. #θ₩ ! ₩θΩ§€ฯ ₩#@+ ¥θμ @ฯ€….that’s not right...I’m singing it in English...I guess if it's something I don't think about, I default to that. I wonder if it even rhymes in this language...you see, songs usually rhyme. I messed it all up...I don't know how to explain. ..”
“You don't have to.” Papyrus intercepted her. “I don't quite understand it, but it was nice of you to share it with us.”
“...what's a $+@ฯ?” sans imitated one of the strange music words.
“A star? It’s what the song’s about. They are little lights that shine in the sky at night. Did he ever mention the sky to you?” Tempus tried to explain.
They had heard a little about the sky, and about stars. They were some of the nice things Gaster missed from the surface.
“Yes, we’ve heard of them. So ‘English’ is your first a language and stars in English is $+@ฯ$,” Sans guessed. He seemed very interested in the new language.
“That's right. Not bad.” Tempus yawned. She was getting really tired now. “If you want to learn English, I can try to teach you. Gaster doesn't want me to use it in front of him-”
“all the more reason,” sans mumbled.
“And when I focus on talking to you guys...for some reason I default to windings instead, unless it's a song or something memorized like…! §£€]&€ @££€&!@Ω©€ +θ +#€  =£@& (I pledge allegiance to the flag, don't worry about what it means.) Automatic things like that come naturally, it seems. I’ll try to figure something out. If you want to learn,” Tempus yawned .
“It doesn't have to be English if it's hard, but it would be cool to learn things about the outside world from a new perspective,” sans yawned as well. They continued mumbling half-asleep suggestions to each other until they both lapsed into snoring. It was the Papyrus learned that English for snoring was %%%%(zzzz.)

Part 1, Chapter 11
Or: Oh Boy, Here I Go Killing Again
Tumblr media
Blood War: Masquerade of the Red Death Trilogy Volume 1
Washington DC—March 12, 1994
We’re back with Makish as he continues his contract work for the Red Death.
Normally, a city the size of the nation’s capital could support a dozen Kindred comfortably.
It’s implied any more than that and people will start noticing the disappearances, or all the people waking up with less blood in them than the night before and no memory of why that is. I think it’s also a holdover from the tabletop game, where you’ve got the established canon characters living in a city, the player characters, and a few of the storyteller’s OC’s. You don’t expect the poor storyteller to come up with a whole functioning Kindred community, so your average game might have about a dozen or so vampire characters. Though, that population number makes many vampire conflicts seem sillier and pettier. All that political maneuvering and deception just to rule over about eleven other dudes.
Despite half of the city being a warzone where even the police fear to tread, the city still gets over ten million tourists visiting a year. Disaster tourism, I guess. Combined with the regular political changing of the guard resulting in a constantly shifting population, a city that can usually fit in a dozen vamps can fit several dozen.
Last night, the Red Death had lowered that number by two. This evening, Makish planned to continue that trend. Following the instructions of his grisly employer, the Assamite intended to wipe out more than a quarter of the Kindred residing in Washington. It was an ambitious plan, but Makish enjoyed challenges. The Red Death had proposed a sliding-scale bounty for each vampire slain. The greater the number killed, the larger the reward per Final Death. Tonight, Makish was feeling very greedy. And quite lethal.
Makish’s target this chapter is in a “popular private men’s club” called The Deadlands, located in Anacostia.
It was located east of the Anacostia river in one of the worst neighborhoods in Washington.
Hopefully Anacostia’s being portrayed like this because it’s the World of Darkness, a Harsher, Crueler Version of Our World, and not because it’s a low-income black neighborhood.
No one visited The Deadlands without a bodyguard. Or tried to enter without an invitation.
The club’s owned by an eighth-generation Toreador named John Thompson, a Camarilla liaison with the U.S. government who controlled several powerful politicians by, well, pimping to them.
Well connected with the most corrupt power mongers in the capital, Thompson worked hard to satisfy the most decadent wishes of his establishment’s exclusive membership.
Unfortunately for his “employees”, Thompson’s pimping style seems to be a Littlefinger as Jeff Epstein kind of deal, his services ranging from offering your typical vanilla paid sex to crueler fair.
No desire was too extreme for those who frequented the Deadlands. Sex and drugs were the norm. Orgies took place every night. Sadism, torture, even ritual sacrifice could be experienced—for the right price. More than one tax increase had been passed to help pay Thompson’s fee for a Congressman’s outrageous request.
You know what’s sad? In this real life hellworld, if politicians were paying to torture and murder prostitutes with their constituents’ tax money, would we even be surprised at this point? Plus, a chunk of the country would suddenly become openly pro prostitute murder and pay more money in taxes to “trigger the libs.”
Despite being Camarilla, Thompson’s business practices sound like something a Toreador antitribu would do, those guys finding beauty in the suffering of others. Makish seems to agree.
Makish was, in his own twisted manner, a highly moral individual. He considered Thompson a necessary but unfortunate link between the world of the living and undead. To ensure their safety, Kindred needed control over important people in government. That much Makish accepted. The assassin, however, found extremely distasteful the constant pandering to the basest instincts of the politicians. He felt such acts put the Camarilla on the same level as the hated Sabbat. Removing Thompson promised to be an enjoyable artistic endeavor.
Makish arrives at the club just after 1:00 am, with a bag full of handy assassin gadgets. He’s already in high spirits because he killed three racist thugs who tried to jump him on his walk to the club.
Before attacking, they had stupidly made several insulting remarks about the color of his skin and the nature of his ancestors. It had been bad judgement on their part. The Assamite had strangled the trio with their own intestines. Makish considered the horrified look of stunned disbelief in their eyes as they choked to death adequate repayment for their affronts to his dignity.
The club’s front entrance guarded by a half-dozen brick shithouse ghouls openly carrying AK-47′s.
No police patrolled this section of the capital. None dared.
More likely the ghouls look white enough to carry assault rifles in an American city, so the cops leave them alone.
Makish smiled and shook his head. Like too many of the Kindred, Thompson had grown complacent. He believed himself invulnerable. Dealing with ordinary humans had dulled the edge of his wits. Ghouls were stronger and faster and deadlier. However, they lacked imagination and realization what a truly powerful Kindred could do if provoked.
The Red Death mocked Kindred who depended on basic technology like security cameras. Madeleine Giovanni tore through the Mausoleum’s defenses and criticized its dependence on ghouls. Now Makish is doing the same. Is there any kind of security method these undead pricks don’t smugly look down on? I’m starting to think Vampire: The Masquerade should have kept the “vampires need to be invited in” rule.
Wait, I remember now. Madeleine couldn’t infiltrate Don Caravelli’s hideout. ‘Course, what defenses he has, beyond Kindred bodyguards, are suspiciously unmentioned. Maybe next book.
They were no match for an Assamite assassin. Especially this particular Assamite assassin. A direct assault would take too much time and give Thompson a chance to escape the surroundings. But there was more than one way to enter a fortress. Any fortress.
The Assamite Clan was renamed as the Banu Haqim in V5, and the term “Assamite” was changed into a disparaging nickname. At first I thought this change was because Assamite may have been a slur, but every google result leads to something V:TM related. It looks like Assamite’s just the word “assassin” changed up, making phrases like “Assamite assassin” sound redundant. No insensitivity in this case. Just a stupid name.
Makish does some rooftop hopping to get to The Deadlands.
The club was less than thirty feet away. The ghouls never looked up.
John Thompson exclusively ghouls stealth game NPCs.
The Deadlands is a rebuilt and reinforced Victorian mansion. Pretty extensively rebuilt too, since it’s five stories tall and Victorian homes typically had only two or three. It has alarms and motion detectors embedded in the roof and gables, which don’t go off when Makish lands on it.
The Assamite had mentally locked them into their present setting. Makish possessed incredible powers over machinery.
This again. I did some digging and learned there’s a branch of Thaumatergy called the Path of Technomancy. It could allow Makish to do this, but it was introduced in the Revised version of the Camarilla sourcebook released in 1999, four years after Blood War was published. It could also be a form of telekinesis. Whatever the case, it’s still a bullshit power to bust out so casually. It isn’t even unique to Makish.
Sensing that the only people on the top floor are two humans “engaged in an act of passion,” he hardens his fingers, peels off a section of the roof, and jumps down.
Thompson was two levels down, talking business with a pair of potential customers. Running on a tight schedule, Makish had no time for subtlety. He planned leaving no survivors of his attacks. While he disliked killing innocent bystanders, these lawmakers could hardly be described as guiltless. Murdering them was probably doing their constituents a favor.
The moment Makish enters, his stealth rating is immediately ruined. Those two mortals banging in another room? The ones Makish specifically noted and decided were unlikely to notice him entering? Makish was so busy fantasizing about killing corrupt politicians that he didn’t notice one of them, a high-priced prostitute, rush out of the room until she starts screaming. He quickly reads her mind, because he didn’t have enough powers. Look, he’s a thousand years old, so he gets a shmorgishborg of disciplines. He learns that her john, an old fuck of a senator, had a heart attack during his throes of passion. Classic scenario, I know. She ran out to find help, only to find this random Indian guy breaking in through a hole in the roof.
I’d like to say things go well for the woman. That Makish can also erase memories and wipes her mind so she forgets ever seeing him, or that he just knocked her out. But this is a dark fantasy story, and typical of dark fantasy, the sex worker dies.
“My apologies,” said Makish regretfully and slapped the screaming woman hard across the temple. The blow instantly shattered her skull and she collapsed on the floor in a pool of blood.”
Oh Makish. You were almost the most heroic character in this book. But hey, at least he feels sorry about it, eh? Eh? Eh.
He then checks on the senator in the room she ran out of, dragging her corpse along with him.
The senator lay on the bed, clutching his chest, gasping for breath. He had suffered a minor coronary. Enough to incapacitate him, but not to kill. Makish completed the job by tearing out the man’s heart.
Unnecessary, but I’m not going to judge him for that one.
“Casually, he threw the woman’s body across the politician’s. United in life, he felt it proper that they should be united in death.”
This I’ll judge him for. You already killed the poor woman, you don’t have to make it worse by trying to symbolically link her with the gross old guy she was paid to fuck. Friggin’ artists...
Alarms, activated by the girl’s screams, were ringing throughout the house.
You ask me, scream-activated alarms aren’t a good idea to have in a whorehouse.
Seriously though, a guard must have heard the screaming and sounded the alarm. Makish doesn’t use his maybe-tehcnomancy to turn them off.
He preferred minor chaos when he worked. Confusion served him well.
See? He meant to blow his cover the instant he entered the building.
Makish hurries downstairs and bumps into three armed ghouls. Pretending to be a terrified innocent bystander, he points them upstairs, telling them the now-dead senator might be dying. Then he tears out there throats as they run past him.
There aren’t any more interruptions on his way to Thompson’s office. He slips in, nods pleasantly to the two politicians inside, then kills them by smashing their heads together.
Thompson, a short, squat man with a huge handlebar mustache, gaped in astonishment.
Toreador are stereotyped as the Beautiful Vampires, but for every sexy male Toreador you get an average-looking schlub like Isaac Abrams and this guy. And no, I’m not giving him any points for the mustache. People with handlebar mustaches after 1900 are compensating for having no personality.
“Who-who are you?” he asked.
“I bring justice,” said the assassin, aware of the hidden camera and tape machines recording his every word and action. His rather stilted dialogue had come directly from the Red Death.
On the one hand, I love that Red D.’s canonically a bad writer. On the other, this is coming from an actual writer who’s allergic to contractions, and it’d be hard to notice when the dialogue is intentionally stilted without us being told so.
“For too many years your presence in this city has offended the Sabbat. Tonight that insult ends.”
You’d think being recorded claiming to represent the Sabbat would cause Makish future trouble getting Camarilla contracts, but he doesn’t look worried about it.
Thompson tries to stall for time, saying they can make a deal, but Makish already read his mind and knows about the already-pressed security button under his desk, and the hidden emergency escape passage nearby.
Makish toyed with the idea of letting Thompson escape into the passage, extending the hunt by a few minutes. It appealed to his sense of irony. But business was business and he had numerous other killings to perform tonight. Sometimes art had to be sacrificed in the name of expediency.
And sometimes expediency is needed to get an artist to make art at all. Am I right or am I right?
Makish reaches into his assassin bag and pulls out a big-ass wooden stake. Thompson shrieks and tries to escape, but Makish quickly stakes him in the heart.
Contrary to popular belief, a wooden stake didn’t kill a vampire. However, it did paralyze the Cainite until removed. Thompson was unharmed, merely immobilized. Which was exactly what Makish wanted.
I’d like to thank Weinberg for not subjecting us to yet another one of those “everything the movies say about vampires is bullshit” speeches that’s in every other vampire story. Even Bloodlines couldn’t resist one.
Also, “unharmed” like stabbing someone in the chest with a big wooden spike leaves no mark.
Next out of Makish’s bag is a roll of gray tape and “a small circular device two inches in diameter.” He also technomances all the recording devices off.
He preferred not displaying his special toys to the eyes of either the Camarilla or the Sabbat. His fondness for Thermit was well known. Death by high explosives was Makish’s favorite artistic expression.
This is one of those scenes that’s stuck with me since I first read this book all those years ago. The way Makish kills Thompson is actually pretty awesome, and is a better example of an “artistic kill” than just disemboweling someone in one quick blow. Just ignore how he’s able to do all this before the ghouls Thompson summoned reach the office.
“Open wide, please,” said Makish politely, and with one hand forced the round ball into Thompson’s mouth. A thin strand of wire connected the device to the stake buried in the vampire’s chest. Carefully Makish wound the heavy-duty tape around his victim’s mouth and upper body. Reinforced with optical fiberglass threads, the tape was nearly indestructible. It could not be torn, only unraveled. Taking it off required hours of hard work. Removing the stake, though, took much less effort.
“Your ghouls should arrive shortly,” declared Makish cheerfully. “Seeing you frozen on the floor, they will immediately think to withdraw the cause of your anguish. You will not be able to tell them not to. Unfortunately, when they pull out the stake, the action will activate the trigger of the plaything in your mouth. It is a small but extremely powerful Thermit bomb. The resulting fire should burn your body to ashes in seconds. The colors will be spectacular. It will be an artistic finish to your existence.”
Taking his bag, Makish stepped into the secret passage. It was a quicker, easier escape method than returning to the roof.
“Goodbye”’ he said to the unmoving Thompson. “Thank you for your cooperation. Enjoy the wait.”
Funny story about this scene.
Like I said, this kill made such an impression on me I still remembered it twenty years later. But over that time, I forgot certain other details about the story. Like Makish. As in, I forgot the character existed at all. The same thing happened with Mad-Eye Moody between Harry Potter books. I read Order of the Phoenix when it came out, several years after The Goblet of Fire, and thought “Wait, who’s this guy with the fake eye? Is he important?”
While I was forgetting details about Blood War, I’d been reading online discussions about Bloodlines after it came out. I’d never played the game before 2019, but I knew a bit about the plot, characters, and notable events... I’d say through cultural osmosis, but let’s be real, Bloodlines was hardly popular enough to be called part of a culture. I was just good at remembering useless geek crap with no real-world applicability. The stuff I knew about the game included a character in it who also made an impressive kill using explosives.
What I’m saying is, memories blurred together and for several years and until now, I would have sworn the killer in this scene was Smiling Jack.
Now I know Jack was introduced in Bloodlines, but just a year ago I’d thought that maybe he was a character from the tabletop or an early novel, like Beckett. Also, I misremembered his name as Mad Jack. Long story short, I read the book, learned about Makish, went “oh”, remembered that my family has a history of senility, and sunk into existential despair.
The explosion was so loud that Makish heard it two blocks from The Deadlands. He nodded in satisfaction, deciding it was an excellent beginning for the evening’s endeavors.

Firstly congrats on your fantastic gcse results you should be really proud 😄🙌🏽 As I'm sitting my exams the coming year ( 😭 ) just wanted to ask if you have revision tips for me in regards to the main subjects ( i.e. Maths, English etc ) Please and thank you 😊
Thank you so much!
I’m more than happy to give any advice any time :)
This post is very long so I’m sorry lol. If you can’y read the whole thing I also did a summary at the end.
Maths:
Repetition is key, start by doing some past papers given to you by your school and get used to doing three 1 ½ hour papers. Identify your weaknesses and keep practicing. Keep practicing past papers and problem solving booklets you can find online as the new types of questions are heavily based on problem solving and combining units e.g. algebra with graphs. For revision I went through my past papers and looked at the questions I got wrong and what I didn’t understand. Honestly just doing past papers in maths after learning all the units is the best way to revise. I did past papers really from the start of year 11 all the way to the exam.
Some useful websites that I used (I just wrote out the questions you do not need to print everything)
http://justmaths.co.uk/2015/12/21/9-1-exam-questions-by-topic-higher-tier/
http://www.mathsmadeeasy.co.uk/gcsemathspapers-9-1.htm
Some content on different exam boards may vary but maths is maths and virtually the same on all exam boards. I sat Edexcel and my school offered these books that come in three. I really recommend these as say, for example, pg 51 on inverse functions in the revision books matches pg 51 in the work book. When we had spare time in class or have a spare 10 minutes it is really helpful to complete a page of fractions or something. There is also a book called past papers plus with exam questions in the exam format (if that makes any sense lol) Which is what I used the most. My copy had loads of mistakes but if you buy a new one I think it will be fixed (haha get your act together edexcel)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/REVISE-Edexcel-Mathematics-Higher-Revision/dp/1447988094
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Revise-Edexcel-Mathematics-Revision-Workbook/dp/1292210885/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=KS8EGP0PE8821S279NYQ
https://www.amazon.co.uk/REVISE-Edexcel-Mathematics-Higher-Practice/dp/1292096314/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=H1KM6NPHSEEMHT303AVW
If you are aiming for 7/8/9 a really useful site is churchill maths, your school has to be registered and pay a license or something, which my school was, and you can access so many maths papers. I think there are 9 sets of three papers or more. They are really hard and take a while to get on their level as they have multi step problems and problem solving. These are really good as they start at the difficulty of the middle of the regular paper and go up. This is really helpful for the exam as the easy questions will seem really easy and the hard questions will not feel so bad.
When you practice every question write down the equation(s) you are going to use. You do not get a formulae sheet so you just have to learn them off by heart. Every question I did in class and homework I wrote down the relevant formulae and them slotted in the numbers and etc etc etc. By the time of the exam you’ll look at a trig question and know the cosine rule off by heart and it will make your life so much easier.
English lit.
oh the bane of my life. I have seen each exam vary from exam board to exam board and it does vary with different books you have been given. I studied Great expectations, Macbeth, Blood brothers and conflict anthology on Edexcel, the papers will be different on AQA and OCR and if you study different texts.
A major revision tip is to read the text properly before you start studying it in class. Then I would re read it but only skim through it and properly read the main chapters that have a very important scene at around christmas time and leading up to the exams.
LEARN YOUR QUOTES. Flash cards are great, I categorised quotes by character and theme and just wrote them over and over (but that style works for me and may not work for you). ½/3 word sentences are easy to remember and are concise to slot in where you can. e.g. Macbeth is referred to as a “tyrant”. easy one word quote that you can develop.
For english the time restrictions are ridiculous. Omg it was literal hell. When you do homework like write an essay on the significance of the witches in Macbeth look at the timings you have and try doing the essay in the time.
And to save your should learn the timings per question it will honestly save you from spending so much time on one essay and leaving none for the next questions.
In the exam I was quite sneaky and drew the timings on my watch so I could see when I had to change question which was a life saver *prayer hands emojis*
Instead of kind of learning the whole text sub categorise the information in the questions (I know I didn’t explain that well but hear me out). For example in for Macbeth my essay question was the significance of the witches, and in Great expectations it was the importance of location. What I did was categorise Character, Theme and setting.
I didn’t revise setting and it came up so don’t skip it. Depending on the question it will require 4 or 5 paragraphs so learn 4-5 points for each theme and character. When revising just learn a one sentence point that you can quickly recall and develop in the exam. Flash cards are reallyyyy useful in this. I used mine literally in the car going to school on the exam day.
e.g. The significance of Ambition in Macbeth.
1. Lady Macbeth’s Ambition is the driving force to kill duncan
2. Macbeth realises that ambition is futile without an heir so it leads him to murder Banquo
3. leads Lady Macbeth to her downfall
4. Macbeth murdering Macduff’s family is his ambition to kill Macduff and restore peace.
These are very short points which can be expanded upon. :)
For the poetry there’s 15 poems. Don’t bother learning 15 I learnt 5 and got by. It is impossible to learn all 15 but read and analyse all of them in class so you get a good general idea of what they are all about and how they use structure and punctuation etc. I linked them together by theme e.g. No problem, half cast and class game all go together. In your categories learn one or two that can be compared to anything. I learnt no problem, belfast confetti, cousin kate, exposure, charge of the light brigade and what were they like. If you’re not doing this exam board or anthology collection these titles may not mean anything to you but you get the jist of it.
For each learn the structure, rhyme scheme, imagery and punctuation so in the exam you can recall the poem you select to compare to and the main points.
Finally for english literature learn for each essay question what is needed, some will need context (19th century fiction doesn’t) some want writer’s intention and effect on reader. but putting in context where you can will not hurt.
English language:
I found this really hard so I’m not really an expert as such. For revision learn how many paragraphs are needed for each question and practice with time limits. Practice highlighting text and picking out key information and language, structure and form. Remember to comment on all three of language structure and form for the relevant questions. I think it is really useful to read chapters of 19th century fiction to get used to the language as it’s in paper one. Honestly reading one or two chapters of a the sign of four, pride and prejudice, the woman in black or anything you can find is really helpful.
Paper 2 i think is non-fiction, you can’t really prepare for the texts but practice planning the question is the best revision for this paper. For the long comparison question practice finding similarities and differences in language structure and theme. I did this over and over again for different combination of texts.
For imaginative writing just practice writing an opening, one paragraph and an ending for different questions (I got examples from my teacher like write about a time you ere scared or write about a time you had to work hard for something) Learn a few really good vocal to slot in here and there but not too much so you sound like a dictionary. My favourite was Megalomaniac and I kid you not I used it in every possible place I could.
Science (?)
I was still on the old system and I’m not sure if it is changing for your year? Free science lessons on youtube was basically my saviour and past papers are your best friend. For biology it is just repetition of vocab and systems, I used a lot of acronyms and silly little jokes here and there. For chemistry keep practicing the maths part because that is where a lot of marks can be gained e.g. calculating moles and titration. For physics I just practiced lots of maths questions? I didn’t do too well in physics but *shrugs*
How I worked is I wrote up the lesson neatly the day after the class, before a test I would review it and during revision I condensed the information onto ¼ of an A4 page (I didn’t find flash cards big enough and hard to draw diagrams and stuff) and repeated condensing of information so it got to a pint where each type of cell had their own ¼ A4 page for themselves.
In summary:
Maths: Repetition, repetition, repetition. Write out equations for absolutely every single question you do. Past papers/specimen papers/9-1 hard questions booklets you can find online.
English lit: Learn how many points per question, examiners love a good introduction and conclusion (2 sentences will do fine) but it’s not the end of the world. Flash cards for each theme, setting and character. Learn the key context, structure and imagery of a handful of poems that can be compared to a number of different poems. Quotes, Quotes, Quotes. Shove them in where you can. One or two words quotes are ideal as you an easily embed them.
English Language: practice planning your essay answers for the longer questions (spend no longer than 3 minutes doing this) when annotating extracts don’t write out full ideas or sentences of the extract it wastes time and that sheet is not marked. Just write down a few words for a point you can use. Imaginative writing plan your answer for no longer than 5 minutes, remember to use punctuation, varied sentence length, vary sentence starters and do not be cliché e.g. and it was all a dream *pukes*.
Science: Write down every formula you use for every calculation question e.g. moles=mass/RFM, Moles=volume x concentration in chemistry. practice past paper questions. LEARN UNITS THEY CAN GAIN A MARK. e.g. J or Hz. Acronyms are a life saver for remembering complex systems like the kidneys in biology. Silly little things help too. e.g. remembering the blood vessels in the heart I think VAVAVA  (Vena cava, right Atrium, right Ventricle, pulmonary Artery, pulmonary Vein and Aorta.)
General: Find a system that works, for me it is just writing things over and over again. You may find the leitner system useful (link below) or mind maps. Find what works for you and don’t listen to a teacher telling you to do revision a certain way because “variation helps” which is a complete lie. Just find what works for you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C20EvKtdJwQ
Also prioritise, subjects you do value as much can wait a day, for me German was not as important as maths so i spent more time on maths than german (as an example) but don’t completely abandon a subject because you will get stressed.
I hope this was of some use to you and maybe you can pick out a few things to help you revise. This year will be tiring but it will pay off on results day, trust me. My main tip is to just keep on top of work and get things done asap. Good luck with your exams this coming year I believe in you!

Reading Between the Lines: A 3-Step Guide to Reviewing Web Page Content
Posted by Jackie.Francis
In SEO, reviewing content is an unavoidable yet extremely important task. As the driving factor that brings people to a page, best practice dictates that we do what we can to ensure that the work we’ve invested hours and resources into creating remains impactful and relevant over time. This requires occasionally going back and re-evaluating our content to identify areas that can be improved.
That being said, if you’ve ever done a content review, you know how surprisingly challenging this is. A large variety of formats and topics alongside the challenge of defining “good” content makes it hard to pick out the core elements that matter. Without these universal focus areas, you may end up neglecting an element (e.g. tone of voice) in one instance but paying special attention to that same element in another.
Luckily there are certain characteristics — like good spelling, appealing layouts, and relevant keywords — that are universally associated with what we would consider “good” content. In this three-step guide, I’ll show you how to use these characteristics (or elements, as I like to call them) to define your target audience, measure the performance of your content using a scorecard, and assess your changes for quality assurance as part of a review process that can be applied to nearly all types of content across any industry.
Step 1: Know your audience
Arguably the most important step mentioned in this post, knowing your target reader will identify the details that should make up the foundation of your content. This includes insight into the reader’s intent, the ideal look and feel of the page, and the goals your content’s message should be trying to achieve.
To get to this point, however, you first need to answer these two questions:
What does my target audience look like?
Why are they reading my content?
What does my target audience look like?
The first question relies on general demographic information such as age, gender, education, and job title. This gives a face to the ideal audience member(s) and the kind of information that would best suit them. For example, if targeting stay-at-home mothers between the ages of 35 and 40 with two or more kids under the age of 5, we can guess that she has a busy daily schedule, travels frequently for errands, and constantly needs to stay vigilant over her younger children. So, a piece that is personable, quick, easy to read on-the-go, and includes inline imagery to reduce eye fatigue would be better received than something that is lengthy and requires a high level of focus.
Why are they reading my content?
Once you have a face to your reader, the second question must be answered to understand what that reader wants from your content and if your current product is effectively meeting those needs. For example, senior-level executives of mid- to large-sized companies may be reading to become better informed before making an important decision, to become more knowledgeable in their field, or to use the information they learn to teach others. Other questions you may want to consider asking:
Are they reading for leisure or work?
Would they want to share this with their friends on social media?
Where will they most likely be reading this? On the train? At home? Waiting in line at the store?
Are they comfortable with long blocks of text, or would inline images be best?
Do they prefer bite-sized information or are they comfortable with lengthy reports?
You can find the answers to these questions and collect valuable demographic and psychographic information by using a combination of internal resources, like sales scripts and surveys, and third-party audience insight tools such as Google Analytics and Facebook Audience Insights. With these results you should now have a comprehensive picture of your audience and can start identifying the parts of your content that can be improved.
Step 2: Tear apart your existing content
Now that you understand who your audience is, it’s time to get to the real work: assessing your existing content. This stage requires breaking everything apart to identify the components you should keep, change, or discard. However, this task can be extremely challenging because the performance of most components — such as tone of voice, design, and continuity — can’t simply be bucketed into binary categories like “good” or “bad.” Rather, they fall into a spectrum where the most reasonable level of improvement falls somewhere in the middle. You’ll see what I mean by this statement later on, but one of the most effective ways to evaluate and measure the degree of optimization needed for these components is to use a scorecard. Created by my colleague, Ben Estes, this straightforward, reusable, and easy to apply tool can help you objectively review the performance of your content.
Make a copy of the Content Review Grading Rubric
Note: The card sampled here, and the one I personally use for similar projects, is a slightly altered version of the original.
As you can see, the card is divided into two categories: Writing and Design. Listed under each category are elements that are universally needed to create a good content and should be examined. Each point is assigned a grading scale ranging from 1–5, with 1 being the worst score and 5 being best.
Tumblr media
To use, start by choosing a part of your page to look at first. Order doesn’t matter, so whether you choose to first check “spelling and grammar” or “continuity” is up to you. Next, assign it a score on a separate Excel sheet (or mark it directly on the rubric) based on its current performance. For example, if the copy has no spelling errors but some minor grammar issues, you would rank “spelling and grammar” as a four (4).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, repeat this process until all elements are graded. Remember to stay impartial to give an honest assessment.
Once you’re done, look at each grade and see where it falls on the scale. Ideally each element should have a score of 4 or greater, although a grade of 5 should only be given out sparingly. Tying back to my spectrum comment from earlier, a 5 is exclusively reserved for top-level work and should be something to strive for but will typically take more effort to achieve than it is worth. A grade of 4 is often the highest and most reasonable goal to attempt for, in most instances.
A grade of 3 or below indicates an opportunity for improvement and that significant changes need to be made.
If working with multiple pieces of content at once, the grading system can also be used to help prioritize your workload. Just collect the average writing or design score and sort them in ascending/descending order. Pages with a lower average indicate poorer performance and should be prioritized over pages whose averages are higher.
Tumblr media
Whether you choose to use this scorecard or make your own, what you review, the span of the grading scale, and the criteria for each grade should be adjusted to fit your specific needs and result in a tool that will help you honestly assess your content across multiple applications.
Don’t forget the keywords
With most areas of your content covered by the scorecard, the last element to check before moving to the editing stage is your keywords.
Before I get slack for this, I’m aware that the general rule of creating content is to do your keyword research first. But I’ve found that when it comes to reviews, evaluating keywords last feels more natural and makes the process a lot smoother. When first running through a page, you’re much more likely to notice spelling and design flaws before you pick up whether a keyword is used correctly — why not make note of those details first?
Depending on the outcomes stemming from the re-evaluation of your target audience and content performance review, you will notice one of two things about your currently targeted keywords:
They have not been impacted by the outcomes of the prior analyses and do not need to be altered
They no longer align with the goals of the page or needs of the audience and should be changed
In the first example, the keywords you originally target are still best suited for your content’s message and no additional research is needed. So, your only remaining task is to determine whether or not your keywords are effectively used throughout the page. This means assessing things like title tag, image alt attributes, URL, and copy.
In an attempt to stay on track, I won’t go into further detail on how to optimize keywords but if you want a little more insight, this post by Ken Lyons is a great resource.
If, however, your target keywords are no longer relevant to the goals of your content, before moving to the editing stage you’ll need to re-do your keyword research to identify the terms you should rank for. For insight into keyword research this chapter in Moz’s Beginner’s Guide to SEO is another invaluable resource.
Step 3: Evaluate your evaluation
At this point your initial review is complete and you should be ready to edit.
That’s right. Your initial review.
The interesting thing about assessing content is that it never really ends. As you make edits you’ll tend to deviate more and more from your initial strategy. And while not always a bad thing, you must continuously monitor these changes to ensure that you are on the right track to create a highly valued piece of content.
The best approach would be to reassess all your material when:
50% of the edits are complete
85% of the edits are complete
You have finished editing
At the 50% and 85% marks, keep the assessment quick and simple. Look through your revisions and ask the following questions:
Am I still addressing the needs of my target audience?
Are my target keywords properly integrated?
Am I using the right language and tone of voice?
Does it look like the information is structured correctly (hierarchically)?
If your answer is “Yes” to all four questions, then you’ve effectively made your changes and should proceed. For any question you answer “No,” go back and make the necessary corrections. The areas targeted here become more difficult to fix the closer you are to completion and ensuring they’re correct throughout this stage will save a lot of time and stress in the long run.
When you’ve finished and think you’re ready to publish, run one last comprehensive review to check the performance status of all related components. This means confirming you’ve properly addressed the needs of your audience, optimized your keywords, and improved the elements highlighted in the scorecard.
Moving forward
No two pieces of content are the same, but that does not mean there aren’t some important commonalities either. Being able to identify these similarities and understand the role they play across all formats and topics will lead the way to creating your own review process for evaluating subjective material.
So, when you find yourself gearing up for your next project, give these steps a try and always keep the following in mind:
Your audience is what makes or breaks you, so keep them happy
Consistent quality is key! Ensure all components of your content are performing at their best
Keep your keywords optimized and be prepared to do additional research if necessary
Unplanned changes will happen. Just remember to remain observant as to keep yourself on track

Containers falling off ships while at sea – who is responsible..??
2019 was quite the year for maritime disasters with ships on fire, containers falling off ships etc..
2020 seems to be hitting the industry in other ways which could also be considered a kind of maritime disaster..
But in what may be the first reported case of containers falling off ships in 2020, the APL England a 5,780 TEU capacity containership lost around 40 containers off the coast of New South Wales in Australia..
It has also been reported that around 74 containers are lying in a collapsed state within the stacks on board the ship..
The APL England was on its routine A3N ANL service between Asia and Oceania (China to Melbourne) when it is said to have rolled in heavy weather, losing the containers overboard..
As per the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the ship experienced a temporary loss of propulsion during heavy seas about 73kms South-East off Sydney..
The ship has reached Port of Brisbane anchorage (off Port Cartwright) where it has been boarded by a team of surveyors organised by AMSA to conduct a seaworthiness inspection to establish the structural and operational condition of the ship following the collapse of container stacks on deck..
The identity of the containers (container numbers) that have fallen overboard is still not known and from initial information, the containers are said to contain a wide range of goods like household appliances, building materials and medical supplies..
Australian news channels are reporting that surgical masks have washed ashore on Australian beaches reportedly from the APL England.. There are no immediate reports of any dangerous goods in the affected stack rows and AMSA is verifying all information to confirm the nature of the cargoes in the containers that went overboard..
In rough weather early yesterday morning, about 40 containers were lost overboard from the Singapore-flagged container ship APL England about 73km south east of Sydney. pic.twitter.com/tdDaTtIqCV
— AMSA News (@AMSA_News) May 25, 2020
As per AMSA’s General Manager of Operations Allan Schwartz, “Once the ship is safely in port we will begin our investigation which will focus on the safety of the ship including whether cargo was appropriately stacked and secured on board the ship, and any potential breaches of environmental pollution regulations.
We have received a report of some medical supplies (for example, face masks) washing up between Magenta Beach and The Entrance. This information has been passed on to NSW Maritime. These correlate to drift modelling of debris and are consistent with items listed on the ship’s cargo manifest.“..
An interesting point to note is that this same ship APL England reportedly lost 37 containers which fell off the same deck in the Great Australian Bight in August 2016 also due to bad weather..
This ship is a Singapore flagged ship and such incidents bring to the fore the question whether the ship register or ship registry is liable for containers falling off a ship and who is really responsible.. Let’s see..
  Cargo movement while at sea
If you are in shipping or in the business of exporting and importing it would be good for you to understand a bit about the laws of physics, the connection between shipping and physics, concepts like velocity, inertia and how it applies to the motion of the ocean, and the movement of cargo inside containers while it is in transit..
As per the IMO (International Maritime Organisation), the accelerations acting on a ship during its passage results in a combination of longitudinal, vertical and predominantly transverse motions and the forces created by these accelerations give rise to the majority of securing problems..
The worst movement a cargo undergoes maybe while it is at sea.. Unlike road and rail transport, while at sea, a ship can move in 6 different ways as shown below..
Each of these movements causes a different kind of stress on the cargo packed inside the container and if there is movement of cargo inside the container due to improper packing, there is a greater chance of it damaging the container and even coming out of the container..
Such opposing and counter acting motion could also result in container stacks collapsing especially if the cargo is heavy and is not packed properly..
CSS Code and Cargo Securing Manual
The IMO adopted the Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code) in November 1991 as a guideline to avoid the hazards arising from these forces..
The CSS Code which deals with measures to ensure proper stowage and securing of cargoes on board and to reduce the amplitude and frequency of ship motions, provides an international standard to promote the safe stowage and securing of cargoes by:
drawing the attention of shipowners and ship operators to the need to ensure that the ship is suitable for its intended purpose;
providing advice to ensure that the ship is equipped with proper cargo securing means;
providing general advice concerning the proper stowage and securing of cargoes to minimize the risks to the ship and personnel;
providing specific advice on those cargoes which are known to create difficulties and hazards with regard to their stowage and securing;
advising on actions which may be taken in heavy sea conditions; and
advising on actions which may be taken to remedy the effects of cargo shifting..
The General Principles are
All cargoes should be stowed and secured in such a way that the ship and persons on board are not put at risk..
The safe stowage and securing of cargoes depend on proper planning, execution and supervision..
Personnel commissioned to tasks of cargo stowage and securing should be properly qualified and experienced..
Personnel planning and supervising the stowage and securing of cargo should have a sound practical knowledge of the application and content of the Cargo Securing Manual..
In all cases, improper stowage and securing of cargo will be potentially hazardous to the securing of other cargoes and to the ships itself..
Decisions taken for measures of stowage and securing cargo should be based on the most severe weather conditions which may be expected by experience for the intended voyage..
Ship-handling decisions taken by the master, especially in bad weather conditions, should take into account the type and stowage position of the cargo and the securing arrangements..
The IMO has issued revised guidelines (MSC.1/Circ.1353/Rev.1 – 15 December 2014) for the preparation of Cargo Securing Manual..
In accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS) chapters VI, VII and the Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code), cargo units, including containers, shall be stowed and secured throughout the voyage in accordance with a Cargo Securing Manual, approved by the Administration..
The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure that Cargo Securing Manuals cover all relevant aspects of cargo stowage and securing and to provide a uniform approach to the preparation of Cargo Securing Manuals, their layout and content..
These guidelines state that “It is important that securing devices meet acceptable functional and strength criteria applicable to the ship and its cargo. It is also important that the officers on board are aware of the magnitude and direction of the forces involved and the correct application and limitations of the cargo securing devices.
The crew and other persons employed for the securing of cargoes should be instructed in the correct application and use of the cargo securing devices on board the ship.”
It is expected that adherence to these guidelines combined with the possibility of weight misdeclaration, will be the subject of the investigation by AMSA and The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) while they are onboard the APL England..
  Conclusion
Thankfully there has been no loss of life here and while many may think this is just a small passing issue and an inherent vice of the business, there are a few issues arising out of this..
Losses to those whose containers fell overboard ;
Possible loss and damage to those whose containers are in the collapsed stacks ;
Delays for all the customers whose cargoes are on board the ship whether damaged or not ;
Loss/damage due to these delays which may or may not be covered by insurance even ICC(A) ;
There could even be a few who may not have insured their cargo (intentionally or otherwise)
Stay tuned to get updates on this issue..

Jonathan's David-love. (2 Samuel 1:26)
Disclaimer: This Card Talk delves into the relationship between Jonathan, son of Saul, and his friend, brother-in-law, and possible lover, David. This is a long one, and this time we might actually piss off everyone. That’s not our intent, but we’ll see what happens. As always, comments are open below and here is our contact info.
What Brings Us Here
This card has an interesting history. It was one of the first cards made when the game was being put together. In the original release of the deck (which some of you may have) it read “David and Jonathan coming out as being only good friends.” We changed this in later revisions of the main deck for two reasons: 1) we had no Bible passage to support that assertion, and 2) it seemed purposely anti-LGBTQA+, which we aren’t.
So we created this card instead— “Jonathan's David-love.” (2 Samuel 1:26)— the text of which, with a little context, reads as follows:
Jonathan lies slain upon your high places.
I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
greatly beloved were you to me;
your love to me was wonderful
passing the love of women.
~ 2 Samuel 1:25c-26
These words are contained in the song David supposedly wrote and sung mourning Jonathan’s death in battle. David speaks of his great love for Jonathan, while also noting Jonathan’s love for him. So let’s unpack the history of these two men to understand the nature and depth of their love.
David and Jonathan: A History
D & J first meet in chapter 18 of the book of 1 Samuel after David’s famed defeat of Goliath.
When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took him [David] that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.
~ 1 Samuel 18:1-4
These are Jonathan’s feelings and action after meeting David for the first time: in love, he bound his soul to David’s, made a covenant with him, and stripped himself of his royal/military vestments, making them a present to David.
Oh we can hear the fighting being already…
Conservative Response: Jonathan’s actions were divinely inspired, not romantic! God placed Platonic, friendship, loyalty-type love in Jonathan’s heart; his actions were demonstrating a future political reality. God had already rejected Saul as King (1 Sam 15) and had the prophet Samuel anointed David as the future king (1 Sam 16). Even if Jonathan did not know it at the time, he was acknowledging David as the divinely appointed king. He was conferring his allegiance and symbols of power due to God’s chosen one. This was all God’s plan, not some smutty homo-erotic scene not even fit for Songs of Solomon, which is definitely about Jesus, but that’s another conversation.
Liberal Response: What are you talking about?! Jonathan’s actions were divinely inspired, and romantic! We thought you Conservatives believe in the unlimited power of God. Why can’t it be both? God used the romantic love in Jonathan’s heart to bring about the future reign of His chosen king. Yes, Jonathan’s gift were political, demonstrating his allegiance to David, binding his soul and loyalty to him. But that is because he was in love with him! Look at the language. Look at the immediacy. This is “love at first sight” for Jonathan. His gifts are gifts of affection. He never had a chance after seeing David in battle. And God is using what is inside of Jonathan to further His divine ends.
D & J’s relationship gets more complicated after this. Pretty soon, Saul wants David dead. Lucky for David, Saul confines in Jonathan, and Jonathan has David’s ruddy back.
Saul spoke with his son Jonathan and with all his servants about killing David. But Saul’s son Jonathan took great delight in David.
Jonathan told David, “My father Saul is trying to kill you; therefore be on guard tomorrow morning; stay in a secret place and hide yourself. I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you; if I learn anything I will tell you.”
Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul, saying to him, “The king should not sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have been of good service to you; for he took his life in his hand when he attacked the Philistine, and the Lord brought about a great victory for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced; why then will you sin against an innocent person by killing David without cause?” Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan; Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.”
So Jonathan called David and related all these things to him. Jonathan then brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before. (1 Samuel 19:1-7)
However, this reprieve only lasts for a while; Saul tries to kill David anyway. Only this time it’s David’s wife Michel— Saul’s daughter, Jonathan’s sister— who helps him escape the king’s wrath (1 Samuel 19: 8-17).
It’s chapter 20 of 1 Samuel that really shows the depth and breadth of their relationship.
After his escape, David and Jonathan meet up to talk. Jonathan just can’t believe that his father tried to kill David, especially without talking to him first. David, always the politically shrewd operator, says “Your father knows well that you like me; and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, or he will be grieved.’ But truly, as the Lord lives and as you yourself live, there is but a step between me and death” (vs. 3). So the boys make a solemn covenant between themselves, their families and decedents:
If I am still alive, show me the faithful love of the Lord; but if I die, never cut off your faithful love from my house, even if the Lord were to cut off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.” Thus Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the Lord seek out the enemies of David.” Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him; for he loved him as he loved his own life. (1 Samuel 20:14-17)
This covenant results in Jonathan betraying his father to further effect the escape of David (vs 24-42). At their last meeting in life
[David] prostrated himself with his face to the ground. He bowed three times, and they kissed each other, and wept with each other; David wept the more. Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, since both of us have sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord shall be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants, forever.’” (41-42)
 And here we go again…
Conservative Response: Once again, this is political loyalty, not romance. They both understand that a civil war is about to break out, and Jonathan’s allegiances are going to be torn between his father— whose throne is he supposed to inherit, for whom he is a general in his army—, and his best friend, who is also married to his sister. Both men repeatedly discuss and vow to protect each other’s lineage, no matter who wins the inevitable war between Saul and David’s forces. This loyalty is, again, built off of their friendship, but also the holy bond God put between the two of them; hence, the convent language they employ which, as clear from its use elsewhere in the Bible, is legal in nature, not romantic.
Liberal Response: Right, and why would Jonathan choose David over his father, choose a stranger from another tribe, over his own people? Love. He is rebelling against his family, his nation, to protect his one true love. The impact of what you conservatives say may be true, but that is an afterthought for Jonathan. He is focused on the man, not the mission. His primary motivation is to do all he can to safeguard the love he had bound his soul to. And they are crying and kissing! What more proof do you need? Where is the “politics” in those actions?
Conservative: That is so much hogwash and balliwho! It is not that kind of love! And the text doesn’t say they were kissing on the lips. It could have a holy, regal kiss on the cheek, forehead, or hands, you moral degenerate!
Liberal: Oh it “could have been”? That’s a lot of supposition from the “be silent where the Bible is silent” camp, you homophobic asshole!
US: Okay people: let’s play nice. Does either matter? Yes. Of course it does. But are you actually thinking about why it matters? Because in truth, this debate tests the bounds of how you view and tolerate the differences between being homosocial and homosexual. And how comfortable you are with each.
Homosocial vs Homosexual: Love, Love, Love
In layman’s terms, homosociality defines the social bonds between members of the same sex, though usually people only use it to describe men (because it’s not culturally “weird” for women to form strong social bonds. People are stupid.). Homosexuality is about romantic bonds between members of the same sex, and once again, people often find relationships between men something worthy of more discussion and less fetishized than same-sex romantic relationships between women. They are the “this far and no farther” boundaries that we place on same-sex relationships.
Our card’s verse notes that David claimed Jonathan’s love was  “wonderful,” the Hebrew of which translates to mean “beyond comprehension.” Furthermore, David said that Jonathan’s love was greater than the love of women.
This is noteworthy because, depending on how one navigates the pronoun swamp of 1 Samuel 20:17, this is the only time in the Bible where it says David loved Jonathan back. Something artists over the centuries have noted, almost always making Jonathan’s affection for David more prominent. Hence the diction of our card.
This gets even more awkward when we remember that David was married to Jonathan’s little sister, and the later drama in their marriage [the Card Talk about this is forthcoming]. Is Michal the woman David had in mind while thinking of Jonathan’s love? The comparison is made more interesting when we note that Bible records the love between David and Jonathan as a two way street, while with Michel it only records Michel’s love for David (c.f. 1 Samuel 18:17-28).
Seriously you two…?
Conservative Response: Exactly! Jonathan’s love of David was better than Michal’s, which proves his love was non-sexual, non-romantic! The writer is contrasting the two against each other. The writer of 1 Samuel is not contemporaneous with the events. Therefore, he knows the rest of David’s story and his romantic, sexual relationships with women. No woman’s love was ever as profitable to David as Jonathan’s. Not Michal or even Abigial. Not Ahinoam, Maacah, Haggith, Abital, or Eglah. Certainly not Bathsheba, to say nothing of his other wives and concubines.
Liberal Response: First off, what’s that crack about Bathsheba, as if she did anything other than be power-raped by the king, and then have her husband, one of David’s “mighty men,” murdered? Victim-blame much? And second, once again, you’re proving my point. Jonathan and Michal are on the same wavelength: they both betray the same family, the same father, for David. And both do it because they are in love with him: sexually, romantically. That’s the point of comparison. They both loved him, but Jonathan’’s love was better which, as you say, is borne out by the writers/redactors knowing how David and Michal’s relationship will fall apart in a few chapters (c.f. 2 Samuel 6:20-23). At the very least we can say David was so damn hot, none of Saul’s kids could resist him.
An interesting academic sidestepping of this debate is well articulated by Baruch Halpern.
Halpern argues that the “special relationship” between David and Jonathan— however one would present it— “is probably invented or inferred, not recalled” by the biblical writer(s), for the express purpose of insulating David from blame against charges “that David conducted a vendetta with the house of Saul” (283). In other words, the whole relationship is political-romantic fiction to paint David as less vindictive and bloodthirsty in regards to Saul’s lineage.
Don’t dismiss this idea out of hand. David is pretty ruthless throughout his narrative. He is introduced by way of talking about the wild animals he kills before he chops off Goliath’s head with Goliath’s own sword (yeah, that’s how he died, not the slingshot. Your flannel graph lied). And he exits the Bible giving Solomon a list of people to have killed once he’s gone, including his own cousin Joab, who was only ever loyal to David, esp. when it came to killing people for him.
Halpern (among others) points out that the Bible spends a lot of time establishing that David didn’t lead a coup against Saul or exact revenge against his descendants once David took power. David didn’t kill Saul when he had the chance, twice (1 Sam 24 & 26). Saul and his sons all end up dead by Philistine hands, when David was in a whole other region (compare the end of 1 Sam 30 to chapter 31). When the a grip of Saul’s descendants are massacred by the Gibeonites, the text makes it clear that, though David handed them over to be killed, it’s because God ordered the hit. None of his forces, nor any Jews, took part in the slaughter, and he made sure Jonathan’s physically disabled son Mephibosheth made it out alive (2 Sam 21:1-14). The point: maybe the text is being suggestive for the specific purpose of showing how close they were so later generations wouldn’t think poorly of the Davidic Monarchy. A plan, if true, that has historically had mixed results among scholars and lay people alike.
As interesting as this idea is, we assume neither foaming-at-the-mouth disputant above will spend a lot of time considering Halpern until what is the primary concern in their minds on this issue: what was David doing or not doing in the privacy of this bedroom?
Two Open Letters
So what do we think? Do we side with the “Conservatives” or the “Liberals”? Honestly, we don’t really care. We’re more interested in the ideologies behind the debate. Because we often notice two ideas lingering in the back of some minds coming from both positions.
Conservatives seem to say, “Men in the Bible can’t be loving and intimate,” while Liberals seem to say, “Men in the Bible can be loving and intimate only if they are gay. “ So we want to address both sides, ask each two essential questions.
Dear Conservatives,
why are you so bothered by the idea that the Bible would show a happy homosexual couple?
(We think we know why, but do you? Do you really?)
Before you start quoting Leviticus 18:22 (or other passages horribly out of context), ask yourself something: Could David be a “man after God’s own heart” and not “straight”?
As we (and any clergy, lay leader, or biblical reader with basic reading comprehension) has noted, the Bible records that David was
a repeated liar (c.f. 1 Sam 21 & 27)
an adulterer (2 Sam 11)
one of the worst fathers recorded in the Bible (2 Sam 13-18)
a nationalistic idolater cursed by God (2 Sam 24),
sexually unchaste (too many examples to name), and
a murder and betrayer of his own friends and family (c.f. 2 Sam 11; & 1 Kings 2).
But you want to focus all your attention on his possible sexuality, especially when, according to your own logic, that might have been a high point in his narrative?
Ask yourself: what if Jonathan was in love with David romantically, sexually? Maybe David loved him back in that same way. Maybe David was bi-sexual or pansexual. We don’t know. You don’t know. But were God’s ends thwarted? Were the elements of David’s life which led to the coming Messiah disrupted? Did the world come crashing down? Didn’t all the things you argued for above still take place in God’s timing? Couldn’t God have worked through their “sin,” whether He “hated” it or not?
So why are you so hung up whether there is something evil and/or disgusting about the idea that they were sexually attracted to each other, whether they found a way to physically consummate their love or not?
No. Stop.
Read the above again. Slowly. Honestly. Non-defensively. If you believe being “gay” is a sin, and we are all “sinners,” including David and Jonathan, why couldn’t “gayness” be one of their sins, and God still used them, just like you argue that God uses rest of us flawed, sinful people? Just like God still uses you.
If you don’t have a good answer for that question, you need to do some soul-searching, and stop wondering why you’re accused of “homophobia” by Liberal friends, family, and acquaintances more often than you’d like.
Dear Liberals
why are you so bothered by the idea that the Bible would show intimate, non-sexual love between men?
(Again, we have our suspicions, but have you worked that out?)
Defending the “least of these” is supposed to be your bread and butter. Social justice warrior-ing is not only biblical, it has become second nature for you. This is not a bad thing, usually it is to be commended. Any the fight against homophobia, transphobia, and the myriad discrimination experienced by the LGBTQA+ community, especially at the hands of the church, is a noble one. It is what Jesus would do.
So finding a positive depiction of a same-sex couple in the Bible would be a wonderful, affirming counterpoint in the midst of a book with passages like the one above from Leviticus. And let’s be blunt: LGBTQA+ folk can see themselves in an all too-familiar narrative: two young people living double lives— their love denied by an overbearing father and unforgiving social system— are forced to meet in secret to discuss their love.
But doesn’t it feed a culture of toxic-masculinity by saying the only way this passage makes sense is by saying David and Jonathan we’re sexually intimate? Isn’t something important lost if we purport that the text can only be interpreted as a romantic relationship, propping up the notion that men cannot be emotionally vulnerable and physically affectionate in public without that being socially taboo?
No. Stop.
Read the above again. Slowly. Honestly. Non-defensively. Is it possible that you’re screaming, “look at the text, they HAVE to be gay!” sadly and ironically based on bro-culture, misogynistic, and/or homophobic ideas of what it means to be “a man” (i.e. “real men” don’t act like this, unless they’re gay.)?
If you don’t have a good answer for that question, you need to do some soul-searching, and start wondering if you’re not as “woke” as you think; if you’re more self-loathing than you were aware.
Perhaps you should re-read everything we said above before you send us hate mail.
Perhaps we should all do a better job of prioritizing what we focus on and why.
Or better still, perhaps we can work on loving each other, as Jonathan loved David, as Christ loved the Church, and be willing to give our everything for others wonderfully made in the image of God, no matter who they choose (or don’t choose) to share their consensual love with in a romantic way.
But what do we know: we made this game and you probably think we’re going to Hell.

When His Roster Outgrew His Classroom, This Prof Mastered Modular Online Curriculum
It was an unanticipated scheduling issue that challenged Dr. Bruce Robertson to completely redesign a classroom course to fit an online/in-class hybrid format—in just two weeks.
Robertson has long believed that the linear approach to teaching may not be right for everyone.
Right before the start of the Fall semester in 2002, Robertson learned that the 400-seat movie theater that held his Principles of Marketing class at San Francisco State University would no longer be available. In its stead, he was offered a 150-seat classroom on campus. The only way to overcome the seating limitation was to turn to technology. As it happens, that was one of the best things that ever happened to him. In fact, it is the reason his sought-after courses now are able to accommodate up to 1,400 people per semester—offering each student a learning experience that is more flexible, personalized, and engaging than ever before.
Recently, Robertson became a member of the Course Hero Faculty Club, a platform where professionals in higher education share their teaching innovations, inspiration, and practical advice with the goal of helping all students learn deeply and graduate confident and prepared. He spoke with Course Hero about how he transformed his classes using a modular approach—and the unexpected benefits he has seen since.

Using tech to personalize learning
Robertson has long believed that the linear approach to teaching may not be right for everyone. Different students have different approaches to learning, he says. “But they’re all expected to run through the same program, and the program is linear—which means we do chapter 1, then we do chapter 2, then we do chapter 3.” This, he says, leaves some students bored for the first few weeks, while others struggle through the introductory material.
Robertson notes that redesigning a curriculum using modules allows educators to build a cache of materials a little at a time.
When forced to redesign his course, Robertson saw an opportunity to move toward a curriculum that offered more flexibility than his linear syllabus ever could. His choice: modular learning. In this system, students choose from a menu of content delivery options (textbook, downloadable study guides, lectures) and interaction options (in-person or online). Students can complete modules at their own pace and in any order, creating an individualized experience. Today’s technologies, he notes, make it easier than ever to create, distribute, and navigate such a curriculum.
“What we’re doing is redesigning courses that are appropriate to the technology that’s available today,” says Robertson. “If I have the technology infrastructure set up, there’s no reason for two students to have to have the same experience in an online classroom.”
Creating modules, one step at a time
In 2002, Robertson began to “chunk” his long lectures into short videos, each focusing on a specific topic. Over the next few years, he also interviewed dozens of experts in the subject and applied for a technology grant, which he used to redesign his website to support modular learning. In 2013, he documented the experience in a case study in the Atlantic Marketing Journal, titled “Operating a Very Large-Section, Hybrid Principles of Marketing Class at a Public University: Lessons Learned over Ten Years.”
Today, Robertson’s course consists of 150 to 200 online modules, each of which includes a video presentation, a section from his own book Marketing Fundamentals for Future Professionals, and—coming soon—an active learning exercise. (See sidebar, “Robertson’s Content Options for Hybrid Courses.”)
10 Ways to Innovate and Inspire Students
Get more instruction tips with Lessons in Teaching: Practices and Insights from the Course Hero Faculty Club, a collection of 10 college educators' best practices for capturing students’ attention and keeping them engaged. Highlights include:
Building cultural competence with a quiz students are expected to fail
Improving students' collaborative skills with the TREO model
Making practice tests fun with a "King of the Hill" game
Keeping students on track through a range of grading strategies
Uniting thousands of online learners with a selfie game
Adapting to a modular curriculum
Robertson notes that redesigning a curriculum using modules allows educators to build a cache of materials a little at a time. Also, since one module can be added or revised without affecting the others, it is easy to redesign course content piecemeal, as the need arises.
Here are the steps he recommends for getting started:
1. Seek out tech support
Creating engaging online education materials requires teamwork, collaboration, and creativity, Robertson says. “This isn’t something that you meander into.” To this end, he has built partnerships with graphic designers, programmers, and videographers. It is vital, he says, to find people who understand the technology and visual presentation. “I’ve been trained in the blackboard- and text-oriented world,” he says. “But nowadays, [student learning] is very graphic and video-oriented—which is a different skill set.”
2. Edit, then edit some more
Robertson created his first modules by breaking his 75-minute lectures into YouTube videos of about 15 minutes each. However, he soon realized these videos were still too long. “I took an online [business] class,” he says, “and it was torture.” He decided that it was unrealistic to ask his students to watch more than 10 minutes at a time. “I’d like to get it down to two to three minutes per video.”
3. Provide recommended paths
While the goal for modules is that they be mixed and matched, it is extremely beneficial to provide at least three or four suggested paths, says Robertson. For example, one path might be for non-business majors and another would cater to working marketing professionals. “I would also recommend being able to sort them into beginner and advanced modules,” he says.
4. Offer experiential exercises
Robertson is still planning these exercises; his goal is to let students learn by doing rather than just by consuming. He explains that an experiential exercise can be as simple as a video game, such as the simulation Lemonade Stand. Here, the player is given money, a weather report and lemonade supplies. At the end of the day, students assess how they did and adjust accordingly. He intends to use this module to have students practice “product price promotion and distribution,” with the goal of earning $100.
5. Use technology to make it all manageable
There are so many great things you can do in the online world that are not possible at all in the offline world.
Bruce Robertson
Technology makes it easy to send out reminders, administer quizzes and offer immediate feedback. “There are so many great things you can do in the online world that are not possible at all in the offline world,” he says.
Robertson is also a huge proponent of learning management software. Some systems allow the user to hyperlink a table of contents to an ebook, YouTube video and other supplementary content. This allows for easy navigation and access by students.
6. Experiment with gamification
Robertson is now exploring the use of gamification—creating a set of modules that students will complete to unlock the next level of modules—as is common in video games. This approach combines a sense of control with a feeling of accomplishment, both of which Robertson says drive engagement. “Research has shown that if people feel like they’re in control of whatever they are doing, they will be more satisfied with whatever they are doing.”
Results that speak for themselves
With the module system, 22% more of Robertson’s students are passing his course than ever before. The class also has a good reputation among students, attracting 300 non–business majors each semester. “That’s saying something,” he says.
What also says something: the long-term impact. Many former students have expressed an interest in having access to the modules after graduation. “Ideally, we would make modules available outside class for alumni so when they graduate, they don’t lose access to the materials,” he says.
Consider that version 2.0. And you can bet he is working on it!

Robertson’s Content Options for Hybrid Courses
Dr. Bruce Robertson delivers content in a variety of ways in his hybrid course, noting that some methods work better than others, depending on the student. Here are his options, along with some of their salient characteristics:
Textbooks—These are written specifically for the class to ensure consistency of content across platforms. Robertson offers:
Traditional bound version, for those who want to keep the book as a resource
Loose-leaf version, makes it easier to take notes in class, and can replace downloadable study guides
E-book
Lectures—These illustrate the topics with relevant, timely examples. These are also delivered in various formats:
In-person lectures allow students to take the class in the traditional manner, and allow real-time Q&As.
Video stream lectures allow same-day access for online students.
YouTube channel offers five- to 10-minute clips for each topic, and allows students to access content after graduating.
Tests—Students have unlimited attempts at quizzes, which allow them to make and correct mistakes without sacrificing their grades. Missed questions, he adds, are far more diagnostic than questions answered correctly. He offers the following:
Live tests offer unlimited attempts for one week; the deadlines encourage students to keep up with class.
Review tests are ungraded practice versions of the live tests. These allow students to have access to the test banks after the live test has expired.
Activities—These are interactive exercises tied to specific topics. For Robertson, this area is still under development.
