If you are into paleo and have not heard of this yet:
There is some controversy surrounding a paper published by Robert DePalma (also known as the person who described dakotaraptor).
He worked on a project with PhD student Melanie During, excavating fish fossils from Tanis (a site which he apparently has control over as a PhD student). She used spherules in the gills of these fish to conclude that they would have died during the kpg extinction event. Looking at the bones of these fish, she concluded these died during spring, thus linking the kpg extinction to spring season.
However, when her paper was still in review, DePalma published his own paper with the same conclusions, without any acknowledgement to her. She had offered him to be second author before this, which he alledgedly did not respond to.
Turns out: his paper is suspicious to say the least.
His graphs have incorrect error bars, graphs of different specimens which match when enlarged or shrinked and a dubious amount of specimens tested (he originally claimed 19, but later 4)
No original data was published along with the paper and it cannot be retraced. (Due to the death of a researcher, according to DePalma).
His supervisor nor co-authors have said anything about these allegations.
This is not only the story of a man who likely committed scientific fraud, but also the story of a man who tried to benefit unethically of the research of a fellow female colleague.
Science, while awesome, has some huge issues regarding power dynamics, integrity and sexism.
(Ps. His paper is currently under review. However, the validity of Durings paper is NOT under question, go check it out! )

“a thousand wasted hours a day, just to feel my heart for a second”
happy 50th anniversary to brian depalma’s “phantom of the paradise”, a brilliant work of art that will forever move me beyond words.
i cherish each gorgeous frame, each note, and will never be able to articulate fully how much winslow as a character means to me.
hopefully i'll be around to celebrate its 100th. i bet by then i'll have every line memorized.

I’m working on the Phantom of the Paradise zine this year as part of the film’s 50th anniversary!
For my piece I chose to illustrate a page from the film's novelisation. It's not a one to one but I liked the fact that in the book Winslow gets to have an added scene of quiet, reflection and even regret after killing Beef.
Also plz remember to give your local composer a hug 🖤 Especially if they have been recently crushed in a record press.
--
Around 65 lovely artists are contributing, to the zine so if u like Phantoms , Synth and the 70s please follow the social media links below so you'll know when pre-orders drop! (Closer to Halloween.)

Danny DeVito played Louis DePalma on Taxi. He was a horrible little man. Rude, crude, and socially unacceptable. He was hilarious. Despite the hateful and hurtful things he would say, there was still something lovable about the character. Danny had gone on to do so much in his illustrious career, but to me, he'll always be Louis DePalma.

SUBLIME CINEMA #670 - CARRIE
DePalma's Carrie is one of the greatest horror films of all time, less so because of the shocks (although there are some great ones) and more because it's so well crafted and acted. It holds up.
There was maybe an over-eagerness to impress with fancy cinematographic trickery - lots of lens attachments, lots of slow motion, split screen, diffusers, split field diopters.. Even a bloody kaleidoscope filter. This could be a result of wanting to create a stylishness despite serious budget constraints, or the director's penchant for A/V maximalism. Of all of these tricks, it was the split field diopter that dePalma deployed most often during his career.
Watching it again recently, it seems clear that Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds lifted a page from this film's fiery ending.
