Denzil Forrester's vibrant works immortalise the dynamic energy of the London reggae and dub nightclub scene during the early 1980s, a subject that has endured throughout four decades of his practice.
Born in Grenada in 1956, Denzil Forrester moved to London in 1967. He now lives and works in Cornwall, UK. Forrester received a BA in Fine Art from the Central School of Art, London in 1979 and an MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art, London in 1983. He was awarded the decoration of Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or MBE in December 2020.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
1. Ecco Hommo (Andres Serrano) - 1988
Inmediatamente Piss Christ came to mind, that strong coloring and fixation I had with that piece while in high school just bubbled back into my memory and even the same teenage angst could be felt in my body. I’ve would have never thought to be able and see a piece from Serrano. Freshly out of an Opus Dei school, the image of a Christ submerged in piss is such a weird orange and yellow colored as if the piece rusted within the urine, it was just a taste of how other ways we may view religions and/or idols.
2. Unspecified Promises (Allora & Calzadilla) - 1993
I have never been to ICA, but when the front desk mentioned a sculpture garden I hope of expected more, not only in quantity but for the care of the pieces. I would have loved to view this piece in its all glory, specially a polished stone where you can barely see your reflection on but it felt powerful nonetheless. Loved it, to the stone to the buttery effect of how easily it seems to have cut that truck.
3. We Culture (Denzil Forrester) - 1978-1985
One of my favorites, not only due to sizing but the coloring throws it out of the park. Feels as unconventional colors in painting but really keen up to real like. I can image myself in that party. It’s energetic.

Artist Research- Denzil Forrester.
I decided to do my artist research on Forrester as the subject of his work relates really well to my theme of temporary nights out.
I also believe that I could learn a lot from his style of art work. His pieces are fun, dynamic and full of energy. Even Forrester’s use of bright unconventional colours reflecting off the disco ball onto the crowd has already given me huge inspiration for pieces that I’d like to create in the future.

Artist research:
Denzil Forrester. Painting velvet rush (photography by Stephen Friedman)
Denzil was brown in Grenada in 1956. His painting of London’a 1980s reggae club scene and police brutality have been exhibited at Tate Britain and white columns in New York. Denzil would squeeze behind the long, narrow bar that ran down one side of the room, he would then prop his A1 sketchbook on the counter… and start sketching. It was dark, hot and crowded. The air fogged with weed and tobacco smoke while he was sketching. He turned his youthful clubbing adventures into a career. At Jah Shaka’s nights, though, he found his inspiration as an artist- as well as a sense of belonging. His theme of going on nights out match my theme/take on movement. His work and words had a huge influence on how I approached movement. Forrester’s work captures night life perfectly and helped me get a better understanding of it all.
