The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Right Dentist for Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental procedure that many people undergo to prevent pain, infections, and misalignment of teeth. If you’re experiencing discomfort or have been advised to remove your wisdom teeth, choosing the right Dentist For Wisdom Tooth Extraction is crucial for a smooth and painless experience.
Why You May Need Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, usually emerge in your late teens or early twenties. While some people have no issues, others face problems such as:
Impaction – When the tooth doesn’t fully emerge, causing pain and infection.
Overcrowding – Wisdom teeth can push against other teeth, leading to alignment issues.
Decay or Gum Disease – Their location at the back of the mouth makes them hard to clean, increasing the risk of cavities and infections.
How to Choose the Right Dentist for Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Selecting the right dentist for wisdom tooth extraction can make a significant difference in your experience. Here’s what to look for:
Experience & Expertise: Choose a dentist or oral surgeon with a proven track record in wisdom tooth extractions.
Technology & Facilities: Advanced equipment such as digital X-rays and sedation options can enhance comfort and safety.
Patient Reviews & Testimonials: Read reviews to learn about others’ experiences with the dentist.
Insurance & Cost Transparency: Ensure the dentist accepts your insurance or provides clear pricing options.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Your dentist for wisdom tooth extraction will evaluate your wisdom teeth using X-rays and recommend an extraction plan. The procedure typically involves:
Anesthesia Administration: Local, sedation, or general anesthesia based on the complexity of the extraction.
Tooth Removal: The dentist will carefully extract the tooth, sometimes in sections for easier removal.
Post-Procedure Care: You’ll receive guidelines on managing swelling, pain, and diet restrictions for a quick recovery.
Post-Extraction Care Tips
To heal properly and avoid complications, follow these aftercare tips:
Use ice packs to reduce swelling.
Avoid smoking and using straws to prevent dry socket.
Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup.
Take prescribed pain relievers and follow oral hygiene instructions.

a couple of dentist visits ago i was sitting in the chair for a few hours and i was in pain and not having fun but this was when i had just started obsessing over marvey so to cope i came up with a fic idea while i was there...
ive been having tooth pain again but i hate going so to cope again all ive been thinking about is this marvey fic idea again where hurt!mike has to go to the dentist so im gonna force yall to hear about it too
the gist is that yes even though mike is an adult, he hasn't been to the dentist in a hot second (ie since high school) bc he just didn't have enough money for it to be a priority
anyways he starts dealing with some general issues: toothache, headaches, sensitivity, disrupted sleep, etc. that just gets bad enough to the point where it's obvious that something is wrong
harvey can tell he's not functioning at full capacity: is avoiding certain foods, looks like he's in pain sometimes, and just generally seems more irritable as of late
eventually it reaches it's breaking point and harvey confronts mike and has to force him to go to the dentist cuz he's fed up (also cuz he cares about mike obvi but he's not gonna say that)
mike has general dentist anxiety (he hasn't been in a while and he's also definitely worried about the copay even tho i imagine this law firm provides dental insurance lol) but harvey’s nice enough to be there for him
anyways after finally going and figuring out the issue, mike's set up for a procedure (tooth extraction? root canal? idk yet), and after said procedure harvey has to deal with gassed up mike who's either woken up from the sedative or just heavily anesthetized
basically just harvey taking care of mike from then on, giving meds and comfort when the pain becomes too much after the anesthesia wears off. i just want harvey to be all soft and sweet with equally soft and loopy mike
i have hopes to write this at some point (my depression is kicking my ass rn) but anyone else is welcome to take inspiration from this! i encourage it cuz i'd love to see what other people come up with! <3

Christ alive. If you ever get teeth pulled or worse, cut out of your mouth, make sure you get enough of the real pain meds to last a few days. These motherfuckers wanna short everyone bc of the opioid crisis but ffs i've never even taken any before. Imma run out at 2pm today, i just took my second to last pill and idk how imma get through this. I don't think three days will cause dependency...
The pain is so stabbing and terrible. I'm redheaded, my pain tolerance is extremely low, and i told them these things when we met. All i can think about is sleeping...

If you have chronic nerve pain (trigeminal neuralgia) due to your broken wisdom tooth like I do, here’s my list of things to try for pain management. These things might help for other chronic or acute facial nerve pain issues, jaw pain, broken teeth, wisdom tooth pain, toothache, etc.
• Ibuprofen, Tylenol and most medications severely interact with my other conditions, especially my stomach conditions, so I avoid them as much as possible. Liquid versions aren’t as bad if I can find dye free, citric acid free, versions in flavors I’m not allergic to. These can help for a lot of people though, just ask your dr if you’re unsure.
• Brushing the broken area, gently, to clean out any food particles that might be stuck in it is hit or miss but can make a difference. It’s always sore for a while after brushing so that’s a con
• I make homemade clove tinctures with vodka and whole and ground cloves. I let it sit in a glass container in a cool, dark place for as long as possible and shake it when I see it (keep it with your spices you’ll remember it more). Then I take a gauze pad and get a dropper full and put it on it. Both cloves and vodka have anesthetic properties and can numb it for a bit. It’s a very temporary solution, also can cause soreness from pressure on the tooth.
• Hot pad on the cheek can cause soreness too (a running theme) BUT it helps a lot especially with cold sensitivity. After you remove the hot pad you can be extra sensitive to the cold or drafts in the air so that sucks too but it passes after a couple mins usually.
• Waterpik flossers are great for sensitive mouth issues, and clean out the tooth area with minimal soreness. Great but takes more spoons to do than toothbrushing and is less portable.
• CBD oil is hit or miss. I have other serious chronic pain disorders and just like many generalized pain management options, it can sometimes get rid of the headache I didn’t notice anymore or the joint pain I dissociate out of existence. Like yeah, glad thats gone but it just makes me focus on the other pain more. Some CBD options aren’t strong enough to do shit for me.
• Warm salt water gargle/rinse is helpful for me most of the time, and it is really important to keep any broken teeth very, very clean due to infection risk. The warmth and salt can help with the pain overall though and so far doesn’t have negative effects for me. It’s very mild in terms of managing the pain though, it’s like a soft gentle kiss on a boo-boo. Feels nice in the moment but when you’re done it usually just goes back to the pain your had.
• TENS units might work for you. I have several electrical abnormalities in my heart so I’m not allowed to use TENS but I’ve heard they can help. Definitely ask a dr first for this one though because I don’t know all the safety risks especially with facial pain
• Warm environments with no drafts or wind, ideal for this pain, for me is not ideal bc of my cardiac issues.
• Medical ultrasound machine, I’ve used these for other conditions in PT and they help a lot!! I don’t know if you can get these outside of a medical setting, especially for a reasonable price, but a provider might be able to help with this. There is the ultrasound goop they put on wherever they do it though so like, might not be fun and also might be a bit sore after?
• Last resort: adult beverages so I’m not paying attention to the pain. Works best for sleeping for me, but obviously has it’s drawbacks.
I avoid:
- Cold environments
- Drafts and wind on my face
- Cold foods
- Hard foods
- Sleeping on the side that hurts
- Chewing on that side
- Talking too much, chewing gum, etc.
- Going anywhere without at least one pain management option available
- Trying to sleep without a pain management option or plan ready to go
- Not brushing my teeth, at minimum I use mouthwash after meals
And some important reminders:
• Watch out for signs of infection and get treatment ASAP. Dental infections are no joke and can be life threatening quickly, especially if you have certain medical conditions such as heart valve disorders (like me).
• These recommendations are from personal experience, talk to your medical providers to see if they’re right for you. I am not a doctor just a humble chronically ill person.
• These are not a replacement for actual medical treatments for your condition, you should still see a professional if you can.
• Many insurances don’t cover dental, dental issues are more common amongst poor people, rooted in the idea that you can still work with fucked up teeth or without teeth . Hence why they’re called “luxury bones”

FUN FACTS ABOUT TEETH
Tooth development begins before birth, with baby teeth forming during the embryonic stage. They start erupting through the gums around 6 months after birth.
Children typically have 20 primary teeth, commonly known as baby teeth. As they grow, these teeth fall out to make way for permanent teeth, which number 32 in adults.
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, even stronger than bone. It’s made up of a mineral called hydroxyapatite, which provides strength and protection to the teeth.
The inside of a tooth contains sensitive nerves and blood vessels in the pulp. When tooth decay or damage exposes these nerves, it can lead to toothaches and sensitivity.
Humans have four types of teeth — incisors, canines, premolars, and molars — each adapted for specific functions like cutting, tearing, and grinding food.
Tooth decay, a widespread chronic condition, occurs when bacterial acids erode tooth enamel over time.
Like fingerprints, dental arrangements are unique to each individual, making dental records valuable for identification purposes, similar to forensic fingerprinting.
In ancient civiliSations, people used a variety of materials to clean their teeth, including crushed eggshells, charcoal, and even twigs.
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood. They were historically useful for processing a rougher diet, but in modern times, they often require removal due to lack of space and potential issues.
Similar to dental arrangements, everyone has a unique tongue print, making it a potential biometric identifier.

Re: the being immunocompromised and nearly dying of agony from shingles all over me at sixteen thing. I used to say that was the worst pain I've ever felt in my chronically ill life, worsened by the fact that weenie me refused morphine because I was fully indoctrinated by D.A.R.E. and terrified that I would become an addict as I lay in the hospital bed writhing in agony as I was damn-near actively dying. Even breaking my toes a few years later just warranted a mild "Fuck." in comparison.
Anyway I recently experienced three infected teeth (two wisdoms that apparently just grew in already rotted? and one cavity that got out of hand because I kept forgetting to call my dentist and couldn't afford it anyway) within a two year span and let me say that that knocked the nearly dying in agony thing right out of the park
#it had literally been a decade by that point since I ever cried in pain#the last time before that being when I had my first bowel obstruction that coincided with a migraine#I miss my tooth#not the wisdoms to hell with them. but I couldn't afford a root canal for the third tooth so it had to come out#the kicker is that as of a month ago Maryland Medicaid covers dental. again.#it used to cover dental even before that but they cancelled the coverage the year I moved to Maryland#I'm glad they are covering dental again and I have an appointment in May but I wish it had come a year earlier#because my options were between a two hundred dollar extraction or a thousand dollar root canal#teeth are a luxury in the U.S.#also when I had my wisdoms removed I went to a dental surgeon and had laughing gas#but when I had the third tooth removed I couldn't afford that again and went to my regular dentist and didn't even have valium for it#I was SHAKING in the chair trying not to freak out or faint#it was longer than it should have been too because the tooth shattered in the process and he had to dig out the roots and let me tell you#not. fun.#at least for two hundred dollars I got novocaine. If I had gone to the dental school for free they wouldn't have even given me that#cannot don't want to imagine that pain#I wish I could have kept my wisdom teeth like my roommate did when he had one years before#but the dental surgeon refused to give them to me because of pandemic protocols. I never even got to look at them#laughing gas is better than valium I think. both are great tho#I wasn't out of control loopy on laughing gas but when they were stitching up my gums I thought 'huh. hell of a time to floss my teeth'#teeth#toothache#Thou hell o' a' diseases

I have to go off on a tangent with this which will include a horror experience I had with my wisdom teeth. If at any point a dentist tells you you should get them removed? DO IT. I can not stress that enough. All 4 of mine were growing in, I had a dentist tell me to get rid of them because of just HOW they were growing in and that was at a young age. My mother dismissed it because I wasn't feeling any pain... Until 5+ years later. Wisdom teeth take a long time to grow and in my time of having them, only one was removed without much problem and it was due to it growing in crooked and would make my other teeth crooked. The other three ALL became impacted, cracked, and the last one left with a big fight by somehow becoming infected and it spread throughout my jaw! That one was so bad that I could have died from blood poisoning due to being near a major artery in my jaw! I was out of work (a job I had literally just started) for nearly a week and was crying in so much intense pain from those things. INTENSE PAIN. Pain you CAN NOT stop unless with a direct injection with pain killer. No amount of pills, numbing gel or anything helped me and I was given all sorts of stuff, including vicodin which did NOTHING. I couldn't sleep for days and had to get emergency surgery done. The later you wait, the harder they are to remove, just like tonsils which to this day I am spiteful of my mother for not removing them because they bring me nothing but infections and they're too large for me, even ask an adult. So, I shall repeat myself:
If at any point a dentist tells you you should get them removed? DO IT. They're not worth it.
