Rev. Dr. William J. Simmons was born a slave in Charleston, South Carolina, to Edward and Esther Simmons on June 29, 1849. While William was young, his Mother fled slavery with her three children, William and his two sisters Emeline and Anna. They initially landed in Philadelphia, PA, and was met by an uncle named Alexander Tardiff, who housed them, fed them and educated the children. Due to stemming pressures from slave traders, Tardiff relocated his extended family to Roxbury, Pennsylvania, Chester, PA, and ultimately settled down in Bordentown, New Jersey. Tardiff had received an education from the future Bishop Daniel Payne and undertook to give Simmons and his siblings an education on that basis. From 1862 to 1864 William served as an apprentice to a dentist. He served in the Union Army during the US Civil War, enlisting September 15, 1864 and serving a one-year term. He took part in the siege of Petersburg, the Battle of Hatcher's Run, and the Battle of Appomattox Court House and was present at the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. After the war, he returned to dentistry. In 1867, he converted to Baptist and joined a White Baptist church in Bordentown that was pastored by Reverend J. W. Custis. The congregation helped him through college. He attended Madison University (now Colgate University, graduated in 1868), Rochester University, and Howard University, from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1873. As a student, he worked briefly in Washington D.C. at Hillsdale School. In Hillsdale, he boarded with Smithsonian Institution employee, Solomon G. Brown. After graduating he moved to Arkansas on the advice of Horace Greeley to become a teacher there, but returned to Hillsdale soon after where he taught until June 1874.

The following summer, he married Josephine A. Silence on August 25, 1874 and moved to Ocala, Florida. The couple had seven children, Josephine Lavinia, William Johnson, Maud Marie, Amanda Moss, Mary Beatrice, John Thomas, and Gussie Lewis. In Florida, he invested in land to grow oranges, became principal of Howard Academy's teacher training program and served as the pastor of a church, deputy county clerk and county commissioner. He campaigned for the Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. He served there until 1879. He was ordained that year and moved to Lexington, Kentucky where he pastored the First Baptist Church. The following year, he became the second president of the Kentucky Normal and Theological Institute, which he worked for a decade. The school was eventually renamed the State University of Louisville and later to Simmons College of Kentucky after Simmons due to schools progression under his tenure. He was succeeded in 1894 at Simmons College by Charles L. Purce.

In Kentucky he was elected for several years the chairman of the State Convention of Colored Men. On September 29, 1882, he was elected editor of the journal, the American Baptist where he criticized the failures of both political parties to support blacks in their civil rights and progress. He was also president of the American Baptist Company. in 1886 he was elected over T. Thomas Fortune to president of the Colored Press Association, having lost to W. A. Pledger the previous year. In 1883, Simmons organized the Baptist Women's Educational Convention, and in 1884, Blanche Bruce appointed Simmons commissioner for the state of Kentucky at the 1884 World's Fair in New Orleans. In 1886, he organized and was elected president of the American National Baptist Convention. The convention was a call for African American Baptist unity and was also led by Richard DeBaptiste and featured notable presentations by Solomon T. Clanton and James T. White. In 1889 in Indianapolis, Simmons was a leader at the American National Baptist Convention and wrote a resolution to provide aid for blacks fleeing violence in the South and moving to the North.

Simmons received an honorary master's degree from Howard University in 1881 and an honorary Doctorate degree from Wilberforce University in 1885. In 1887, he published a book entitled Men of Mark: Eminent, Progressive and Rising, which highlights the lives of 172 prominent African-American men, while serving as the school's president. He was working on a sister edition of the title that would highlight the lives and accomplishments of prominent pre-1900 African-American women, but unfortunately died before its completion. He died on October 30, 1890, in Louisville, Kentucky.

The rewards of volunteering with Dental Lifeline Network https://ift.tt/3c9F0TA Blogger Giancarlo Ghisalberti, D.M.D., is a 2010 graduate of Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. He is in private practice in North Bergen, New Jersey, with his father and brother. Dr. Ghisalberti serves as the District 4 representative on the ADA New Dentist Committee and the committee’s liaison to the ADA Council on Membership. Dr. Ghisalberti is the president of the Hudson County Dental Society and serves on numerous New Jersey Dental Association councils and committees. I began working with Dental Lifeline Network about four years ago. I was introduced into the program by my father who has been a volunteer for many years. After speaking with the network, I received my first patient application. Soon after, we had the patient scheduled and in our office. One of my Dental Lifeline Network patients was an elderly woman who had been to many other offices without success. She had numerous health challenges and was receiving treatment for cancer. She was also on a minimal fixed income with Social Security benefits and unable to afford the dental care she needed. In addition to the challenges she faced, she was unable to drive and relied on other transport to bring her to each appointment.  Upon arrival at our office, I learned she had a moderate fear of dentistry and was in severe need of dental care. She understood she had multiple infections and severe periodontal disease and would need multiple extractions along with prosthesis. We began treatment, seeing her weekly over the course of a couple months. Finally, on delivery day of both her upper and lower partial dentures, she was in shock. Our patient, who traveled close to an hour each way with traffic, was finally going home with a beautiful smile. During our post-op visits, I would learn that she was able to eat her favorite food again, talk to her friends without a mask on and smile for her grandchildren. She went on to leave a wonderful review on Google for us, refer multiple patients to our office and, most importantly, maintain wonderful oral hygiene and a healthy oral cavity.  The story of this patient is not out of the ordinary for my Dental Lifeline Network patients. As dentists, our most rewarding feeling is when a patient is smiling, chewing well and maintaining a healthy mouth. Following up with her for her recall appointments has been a joy. Brief History

With a history that spans centuries, lacrosse is the oldest sport in North America. Rooted in Native American religion, lacrosse was often played to resolve conflicts, heal the sick, and develop strong, virile men. To Native Americans, lacrosse is still referred to as "The Creator's Game."

Ironically, lacrosse also served as a preparation for war. Legend tells of as many as 1,000 players per side, from the same or different tribes, who took turns engaging in a violent contest. Contestants played on a field from one to 15 miles in length, and games sometimes lasted for days. Some tribes used a single pole, tree or rock for a goal, while other tribes had two goalposts through which the ball had to pass. Balls were made out of wood, deerskin, baked clay or stone.

The evolution of the Native American game into modern lacrosse began in 1636 when Jean de Brebeuf, a Jesuit missionary, documented a Huron contest in what is now southeast Ontario, Canada.

At that time, some type of lacrosse was played by at least 48 Native American tribes scattered throughout what is now southern Canada and all parts of the United States.

French pioneers began playing the game avidly in the 1800s. Canadian dentist W. George Beers standardized the game in 1867 with the adoption of set field dimensions, limits to the number of players per team and other basic rules.

New York University fielded the nation's first college team in 1877, and Philips Academy, Andover (Massachusetts), Philips Exeter Academy (New Hampshire) and the Lawrenceville School (New Jersey) were the nation's first high school teams in 1882. There are 400 college and 1,200 high school men's lacrosse teams from coast to coast.

The first women's lacrosse game was played in 1890 at the St. Leonard's School in Scotland. Although an attempt was made to start women's lacrosse at Sweet Briar College in Virginia in 1914, it was not until 1926 that Miss Rosabelle Sinclair established the first women's lacrosse team in the United States at the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland.

Men's and women's lacrosse were played under virtually the same rules, with no protective equipment, until the mid-1930s. At that time, men's lacrosse began evolving dramatically, while women's lacrosse continued to remain true to the game's original rules.

Men's and women's lacrosse remain derivations of the same game today, but are played under different rules. Women's rules limit stick contact, prohibit body contact and, therefore, require little protective equipment. Men's lacrosse rules allow some degree of stick and body contact, although violence is neither condoned nor allowed.

Field lacrosse is sometimes perceived to be a violent and dangerous game, however, injury statistics prove otherwise. While serious injuries can and do occur in lacrosse, the game has evolved with an emphasis on safety, and the rate of injury is comparatively low.

Ensuring the safety of participants is a major focus for US Lacrosse and its Sports Science and Safety Committee, which researches injury data in the sport and makes recommendations to make the game as safe as practicable.

YAY ITALY! 🇮🇹 Congrats @youwerenevermine ! Here’s a little silly for you in celebration and because you made that comment that Emilia was the lucky charm for Italy because she’s there now. 🤣 Wrote this in an hour so it’s silly and dumb but oh well!

“Dany!  Dany where are you!?”

Missandei, her best friend, was on the phone with her, heard the shouting, and chuckled, “He alright?”

“Oh he’s fine, it’s almost time for the Winterfell game.”

“Huh?”

“Football.” Dany tugged the blue football jersey over her shoulders, picking up the phone and placing it back to her ear, now that she’d put on her uniform.  She sighed, leaving her office even though there was still work to be done.  She had a ton of stuff she’d brought home from work, thinking stupidly she’d be able to tackle it, but she’d also forgotten that this weekend was a big one for the Winterfell Wolves.  

She was grateful they didn’t have to go out to the pub, since it was an away game.  When it was away games, they got to stay home.  When it was home games, they had had  to go to the Lone Wolf pub and she would need to stand there for however long the game lasted, whether it went into a shootout or drew or whatever.  She was from Essos; they didn’t have football as big as it was here in Westeros.  

And she’d met and fallen in love with a man who seemed to be completely normal on the outset.

Then she’d met him when the Wolves played.

He turned into a beast.

She also happened to be there the day that they won the first game in over 100 years to the Casterly Lions.  They were well on their way to being engaged, had spoken about moving in together, marriage, the whole lot of it, and if she hadn’t already had those conversations with him, she would have thought him proposing mid-fuck later that evening—one of the best ones they’d ever had honestly, she should tell the Wolves to win more often—was only because he was so happy that his beloved team had won for first time in 100 years.

And a few months later when she ended up at the dentist with a chipped tooth from tripping over her fucking cat Drogon, the Wolves had lost the worst game they’d ever lost in centuries.  

Jon was positive it was because she wasn’t there with her.

It didn’t matter there were times they lost when she was there.  He found an excuse.  She was in the bathroom, he didn’t have the right beer, they were at the wrong person’s house, maybe her hair was in the wrong type of style as it was the day, they beat Casterly, whatever.  

She loved it about him.  It was just a little quirk that made her look at him with a knowing smile, a slight shake of the head, and she’d kiss him and murmur she loved him, and she’d allow him to put her in a Wolves jersey and sit her on the couch or the correct pub chair or whatever.  

The television was already on in the living room when she entered and Ghost had his jersey on, sitting on his massive pillow bed with a new bone.  “Who are we playing tonight?” she asked, pretty sure he’d told her, but she couldn’t remember.  

“Highgarden.”  He pulled her in his lap, passing her a beer.  She took a sip and made a face; it was a Northern brand she really didn’t like but tolerated because she’d taken a sip against the Dornish Snakes and the Wolves came back from a nil-four goal deficit.  He kissed her temple.  “How is Misssandei?”

“Wondering why I cut her off to come down and watch this game with you.”

He grinned, his dark curls tugged from his face, in his ancient, threadbare, with holes on the edges jersey that she was sure he’d had since childhood.  He tugged her towards him for another quick kiss.  “Because it’s the game.”

“Which game is this exactly?”

“Regular game, but the Westeros Cup is coming up.”

“That the big one that’s every four years?”

He looked horrified at her.  “No!  That’s the WestEssos Cup where we play Essosi teams and we go by provinces, not individual teams.  The Westeros Cup is where each province plays each other to determine who is the superior football player in all of Westeros and it is clearly the North and that starts in two weeks.”  

“I’m so sorry darling.”  She kissed his temple, chuckling.  “Ah, so that means the Crownlands will be playing.”

An instantly suspicious look fell over his face, his gray eyes narrowing.  “Aye.”

She smiled sweetly.  “Well I’m from the Crownlands.”

“Hmm…you’re from Essos.”

“I was born on Dragonstone.  Does that not make me Westerosi?”

“It does.”  He looked confused now, brow wrinkling, unsure whether he was going to accidentally offend her with what he probably was getting into.  “Um…but you live in the North.  With me.  A Northerner.”

She giggled; she was just fucking with him and hugged her arm around his neck, stealing a quick sip of beer and passing it to him again.  “Just fucking with you.  Let’s watch this game, huh?”

“My lucky charm.”

“If you’re a good boy I’ll show you the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow when the game’s over.”

He turned pale pink.  “I was drunk when I said that.”

“Yes, I remember, your pot of gold is good too.”  She was never going to let him live that down.  Especially since he told everyone that she was his lucky charm.  She was why the Wolves won, not that he’d put all his faith in just her alone.  He did support the talent of the team, their coach, and everyone who made it go.

But mostly he believed she was the reason they won.

And she loved that about him.  Her superstitious little wolf.  

“And the North plays in this cup coming up, huh?”

“Yes, we’re going to win.”

“Hmm.”

“Because I have you.”  He pressed a hard kiss to her lips, just as someone on the television scored.  He whooped, almost throwing her clear off him to cheer, as the Wolves had scored within a minute of the game starting.  She sighed, falling into the couch cushions and made eyes with Ghost, who gave her a well we do love him face.  

That we do, she thought, getting up to get herself a proper drink at the next commercial break.

Several weeks later, Dany made all of Jon’s dreams come true.

Not only did she secure him tickets to the final of the Westeros Cup via her brother’s connections—it paid sometimes to have a brother who was in politics—where the North were playing against the West, but just before the Wolves won in a shootout, she passed him a small bag with something she purchased before they arrived.  

Jon, slightly distracted as the Northern player lined up for the kick, glanced in the bag.  “Oh, another shirt?  That’s nice, but…not now.”  Her quiet wolf sucked in his breath as the player kicked and he clutched her tight.  

And he scored.  

The stadium went insane, every Northerner fan throwing up their blue and white scarves, t-shirts, hats, and waving the Northern gray and white flag, screaming hysterically.  

Jon was almost in tears, holding onto her tight and screaming in his excitement.  She grinned and jumped and down with him, lifted clear off the ground, his arms hoisting her up, so she was downright climbing him like a tree.  “We did it!  You did it!  My lucky charm!  My Dany!  We won!  We won!”

Dany smiled, thinking of the bag with the infant t-shirt she’d purchased, that he had barely registered.  She’d tell him later; she didn’t think she was the lucky charm this time, but something else.  

“Sure Jon,” she teased, kissing him hard, mumbling.  “You’re my lucky charm too.”

The "killer" on the show exsanguinates a victim, that's where the vampire parts I thought of came in. The first series of chapters will be about that episode. If I feel like it I'll make another part in this work about other crimes or make it a collection. Sass galore.

My memoir: The early years, pt 1

Here is as far back as I can kinda sorta remember. Though not all of it is actually remembered, some of it was told to me. My memory is really stupid--it forgets things that happened five minutes ago, but can remember all this shit from when I was 3, 4, 5 years old. 

My parents stopped sleeping together after they had me. My mother said it was because Dad snored--and he did, very loudly, back then--but I know that isn’t the reason. I don’t remember my crib. Obviously I had one. But then after that, I slept in my mother’s bed. That’s what I do remember; I slept in my mother’s bed and my father had his own room down the hall. My mother slept on a pull-out sofa in the living room. We had the tiny apartment up in north Jersey back then. I slept beside her. That was when I was 3. That’s as far back as I can remember. 

I do remember that I still drank out of a baby bottle at 3. In fact, there’s a video of it somewhere in the house; me at 3 years old, sucking on this giant bottle in the shape of a Crayola crayon. It wasn’t formula, it was cow’s milk. My mother didn’t give me formula as far as I know--my baby book says she pumped. But by 3 it was cow’s milk, or sometimes juice, or very rarely Yoo-hoo. Mostly cow’s milk. I wanted the bottle all the time, and would wail if it was taken away. I’m guessing this was one of my first signs of autism--sucking on the bottle may have been a stim. I walked around nursing it all day, and it would have to be taken out of my mouth when I was lying down to sleep, so I wouldn’t choke on it or aspirate on milk. Then I’d yell for it as soon as I’d wake up. Like I said, probably a stim. The dentist finally told my parents the bottle had to go when I was 4, as it was fucking up my teeth. So I sucked on a binky in its place, until I was 5. Probably fucked up my teeth some more. I never had good teeth.

The other thing I remember from being that young was being terrified of people--my mother called it shy. If a person so much as looked at me, even if it was my own relative, I screamed. My dad told me that if another kid tried to play with me at the playground, I would run away and hide until he went away, then go back to playing by myself. I kinda do remember this, because it happened when I was as old as 6. I hated other kids. I preferred to play in my own world with the Disney Princesses and Simba and Nala, and the other “friends” I had made through all the movies and TV shows I watched. Otherwise I’d play with characters and worlds I dreamed up entirely on my own, or got from the computer games I played.

Movies were the big thing in my house even before the computer...I have old home videos of me sitting in front of the TV and watching a Disney movie when I was as young as 2. I came to know the characters in those films much better than I knew anybody in the so-called “real” world, even way back then. I guess that it comforted me and gave me a sense of security that I always knew what they were going to say, what they were going to do, and how they were going to react to any situation, no matter what. I didn’t get that from humans. I NEVER knew how my mother or my father was going to react to anything I said or did...usually it was with annoyance, anger, or (if I got lucky) indifference. I learned to feel unwanted very early on, and would stay up late into the night crying in my bed because of it. But with Disney characters, it was different.

A scientist even back then, I ran experiments. Left alone with a Disney movie while my mother napped on the couch, I learned how to use the rewind, pause, play, and fast forward buttons on the VCR by going up to the thing and button mashing. I’d rewind the tape over and over (and break a lot of VHS tapes in the process) to see if Aladdin would do something different this time around, and felt a strong sense of...security? safety?...when he did, every time. So then I would do things like rewind the tape and pause when...let’s say when Beast went ripshit on Belle for entering the West Wing, as an example. I’d pause the tape just before that moment, like I was giving Beast a time-out or something, and say, “Beast, be nice to Belle. Don’t yell at Belle this time. Be nice.” Of course, when I ran the tape again and Beast still yelled at Belle--resulting in several more tries only to produce the same response (like I said, I broke a LOT of VHS tapes...), it ended in tears. I tried to make Mufasa not die that way... 

Still, I found comfort in that consistency. It was something foreign and unfamiliar to me but felt incredibly safe. I always knew what Jasmine was going to do when Aladdin pulled her onto the magic carpet. I knew exactly what Ariel was going to say during her argument with King Triton. I would copy them and script from them when I needed to communicate, because they were the only frame of reference I had for human interaction. And the Disney characters became comforting, familiar figures to me. It was the beginning of my relationship with fictional characters...  I like those memories. It’s nice to have something actually cute, funny, and heartwarming to remember. The entire memoir won’t be like that, unfortunately. But I’ll leave off here for tonight.
