Top Dental Services Offered by Dentists in Rockwall
Introduction
Maintaining optimal oral health is essential for overall well-being, and the dental services available in Rockwall, Texas, play a crucial role in helping residents achieve this goal. Rockwall is home to a diverse array of skilled dentists who offer a wide range of dental treatments, catering to the diverse needs of the community. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the top dental services offered by dentists in Rockwall, providing you with the information you need to make informed decisions about your oral healthcare.
Comprehensive Dental Examinations and Cleanings
One of the foundational services offered by dentists in Rockwall is the comprehensive dental examination and cleaning. Regular check-ups and professional cleanings are essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums, as they allow dentists to detect and address any emerging issues early on. During these appointments, dentists will thoroughly examine your mouth, looking for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or other oral health problems. They may also take digital x-rays to get a more detailed view of your teeth and jawbone. Following the examination, the dental hygienist will perform a thorough cleaning, removing any built-up plaque and tartar, and polishing your teeth to leave them feeling fresh and clean.
Restorative Dental Treatments
When dental problems do arise, dentists in Rockwall offer a range of restorative treatments to address them. This may include fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures. Fillings are used to repair cavities or other minor damage to the tooth structure, while crowns are custom-made caps that cover the entire visible portion of a tooth, restoring its strength and appearance. Bridges are used to replace missing teeth, anchoring artificial teeth to the surrounding natural teeth. For patients who have lost multiple teeth, dentists may recommend dentures, which are removable prosthetic devices that replace an entire arch of missing teeth.
Root Canal Therapy
One of the more complex restorative procedures offered by Rockwall dentists is root canal therapy. This treatment is necessary when the inner pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, often due to deep decay or a crack in the tooth. During a root canal, the dentist will carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and then seal it with a filling or crown to prevent further infection.
Cosmetic Dentistry Services
In addition to restorative treatments, dentists in Rockwall also offer a range of cosmetic dentistry services to help patients enhance the appearance of their smiles. These may include teeth whitening, veneers, and dental bonding. Teeth whitening is a popular procedure that uses professional-grade bleaching agents to remove stains and discoloration, leaving teeth brighter and more vibrant. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to the front of teeth to improve their shape, size, and color. Dental bonding is a process where the dentist applies a tooth-colored resin material to the surface of a tooth, reshaping and improving its appearance.
Orthodontic Treatments
For patients seeking to straighten their teeth or correct bite alignment issues, dentists in Rockwall offer a variety of orthodontic treatments. This may include traditional metal braces, clear or ceramic braces, and clear aligners, such as Invisalign. These treatments can help to improve the overall appearance and function of the teeth, enhancing both the aesthetic and the oral health of the patient.
Periodontal Care
Gum health is a crucial aspect of overall oral wellness, and dentists in Rockwall provide comprehensive periodontal care to address issues such as gingivitis and periodontitis. This may include deep cleaning procedures, known as scaling and root planing, to remove plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline. In more advanced cases, the dentist may recommend specialized treatments, such as gum surgery or laser therapy, to address more severe gum disease.
Pediatric Dental Services
Ensuring the oral health of children is a top priority for many Rockwall dentists. They offer specialized pediatric dental services, including regular check-ups and cleanings, fluoride treatments, and education on proper oral hygiene habits. Dentists may also provide sealants, which are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, to help prevent cavities in children.
Dental Implants
For patients who have lost one or more teeth, dentists in Rockwall offer dental implants as a long-term, natural-looking solution. Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as artificial tooth roots. These implants can then be topped with custom-made crowns, bridges, or dentures, providing a secure and durable replacement for missing teeth.
Emergency Dental Services
Accidents and unexpected dental issues can happen at any time, and Rockwall dentists understand the importance of prompt, professional care. Many dental practices in the area offer emergency services, such as same-day appointments for urgent problems like severe toothaches, knocked-out teeth, or oral injuries.
Conclusion
The dental services available in Rockwall, Texas, are comprehensive and diverse, catering to the oral healthcare needs of the community. From routine check-ups and cleanings to specialized treatments like root canals, cosmetic enhancements, and dental implants, Rockwall dentist in rockwall are dedicated to providing high-quality, personalized care. By understanding the range of services offered, you can make informed decisions about your oral health and work closely with your dentist to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. They have expertise in dealing with the unique challenges of treating young patients. The early years are crucial for developing good oral hygiene habits and spotting potential issues before they become major problems. Preventive care is one of the critical focuses of pediatric dentistry. Dentists will educate parents on proper brushing techniques the importance of flossing, and provide guidance on nutrition to support strong teeth and overall oral health. They also perform routine check-ups and cleanings to catch any potential issues early. In addition to preventive care, pediatric dentists offer specialized treatments such as fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and orthodontic evaluations. These services help protect your child's teeth against cavities and correct any misalignments or bite issues at an early stage. Choosing a Rockwall pediatric dentist who understands how to make dental visits enjoyable for kids is important! Pediatric dental offices often have child-friendly environments with toys, games, and fun decorations that help alleviate anxiety during appointments. Services Offered by a Rockwall Pediatric Dentist
When caring for your child's oral health, a Rockwall pediatric dentist offers a wide range of services tailored specifically for kids. These specialized dentists understand that children have unique dental needs and are trained to provide gentle and compassionate care. One of the main services offered by a Rockwall pediatric dentist is preventive care. This includes regular check-ups, cleanings, and fluoride treatments. Starting early with these preventative measures can help your child establish good oral hygiene habits that will last a lifetime. Another important service provided by pediatric dentists is restorative dentistry. This involves treating issues or conditions in your child's teeth or gums. Whether filling cavities, repairing chipped teeth, or addressing gum disease, a skilled pediatric dentist has the expertise to handle these procedures with precision and care. Pediatric dentists also offer orthodontic evaluations and treatment options. They can assess if your child would benefit from braces or other orthodontic appliances to correct misaligned teeth or bite issues. Early intervention can often prevent more extensive orthodontic work later on. Tips for Parents to Maintain Their Child's Oral Health
As a parent, you play a crucial role in ensuring your child's oral health. Good dental habits early on can set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Here are some tips to help you maintain your child's oral health: 1. Start early: Begin cleaning your baby's gums with a soft cloth or infant toothbrush even before their first teeth erupt. This helps remove bacteria and gets them used to having their mouth cleaned. 2. Brush twice daily: Once your child has teeth, brush them gently using fluoride toothpaste twice daily. Use only a smear of toothpaste for children under three and a pea-sized amount for older children. 3. Teach proper technique: Show your child how to brush correctly by using small circular motions along the gumline and all surfaces of the teeth. Encourage them to spit out the toothpaste rather than swallowing it. 4. Floss regularly: As soon as two teeth touch each other, start flossing between them once a day to remove plaque and food particles that brushing alone may miss. 5. Limit sugary snacks and drinks: Sugary foods and beverages can contribute to cavities, so try to limit their consumption, especially between meals. 6. Schedule regular dental visits: Bring your child for regular check-ups with a Rockwall pediatric dentist every six months or as their dentist recommends. 7. Encourage healthy eating habits: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins not only supports overall health but also promotes strong teeth and gums. By following these simple tips consistently, you can help ensure your child develops excellent oral hygiene habits that will last a lifetime! Remember that leading by example is one of the most effective ways to encourage good oral care practices in your little ones.
Common Dental Problems in Children and How to Prevent Them
Maintaining good oral health is essential for children, as it sets the foundation for healthy teeth and gums. However, just like adults, children can also experience dental problems. Here are some common dental issues in children and tips on preventing them. 1. Tooth decay: One of the most prevalent dental problems among children. The primary cause of tooth decay is poor oral hygiene and excessive consumption of sugary foods and drinks. To prevent tooth decay, encourage your child to brush their teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, limit their sugary snacks and beverages intake, and schedule regular visits with a Rockwall pediatric dentist. 2. Gum disease: Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, can occur in children without proper oral hygiene practices. Teach your child the importance of brushing properly along the gumline to remove plaque buildup that can lead to gum disease. 3. Malocclusion: Also known as crooked teeth or misaligned bite, malocclusion can affect a child's speech development and overall oral health if left untreated. Early detection by a pediatric dentist is crucial for timely intervention through orthodontic treatment. 4. Thumb sucking: While thumb sucking may initially seem harmless, prolonged thumb-sucking habits can result in misalignment of permanent teeth or jaw irregularities over time. Encourage your child to gradually break this habit using positive reinforcement techniques or consult a dentist for further guidance. 5. Tooth sensitivity: Some children may experience tooth sensitivity when consuming cold or hot foods/drinks due to enamel erosion or exposed dentin surfaces. Maintain regular dental check-ups so that any signs of tooth sensitivity can be identified early on. Preventing these common dental problems requires consistent efforts from parents alongside professional care from a Rockwall pediatric dentist. Your child's oral health journey deserves attention right from infancy till adolescence. Encourage healthy habits at home and ensure regular dental visits, instilling a lifelong commitment to maintaining proper oral hygiene among children.
Making Dental Visits Fun for Kids
Making dental visits a fun and positive experience for kids is crucial in helping them develop good oral hygiene habits that will last a lifetime. Here are some tips to help make dental appointments enjoyable for your little ones! 1. Choose a Kid-Friendly Dentist: Look for a Rockwall pediatric dentist specializing in children. These dentists have the expertise and training to create an environment that caters to kids, with colorful decor, toys, and friendly staff. 2. Start Early: Introducing your child to the dentist is never too early. Schedule their first visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth emerges. This helps familiarize them with the dental office from an early age. 3. Read Books About Dentistry: Many children's books are available that explain the importance of oral health and what happens during a dental visit. Reading these books together can help alleviate fears or anxieties about going to the dentist. 4. Role Play at Home: Pretend play can effectively prepare your child for their dental appointment. Take turns being the dentist and patient, using toothbrushes as tools, and teaching proper brushing techniques. 5. Use Positive Reinforcement: Offer praise and rewards after each successful trip to the dentist, such as stickers or small treats. This positive reinforcement helps your child associate dental visits with something enjoyable. 6. Encourage Questions: Encourage your child to ask questions about their upcoming appointment so they feel more prepared and informed about what will happen during their visit. By implementing these strategies, you can transform routine dental visits into exciting adventures for your little ones! Remember, creating positive experiences now will set them up for a lifetime of good oral health habits.

Meet Dr. Stan Lowrance
DR. STAN LOWRANCE DDS, FAGD
Dr. Stan Lowrance is a well known dentist in the Rockwall community. He graduated Claude High School in 1973, went on to West TX State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He then continued his education at Baylor College of Dentistry earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1981. He opened his dental practice in Rockwall that same year.
Dr. Lowrance furthered his education by completing studies at Midwest Implant Institute of Columbus, Ohio in 1991 where he received the Presidential Award, the highest honor given to the graduation class. He also completed a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry in 1991 and was named Who's Who in Outstanding Americans. Dr. Stan has received many prestigious titles:
Rockwall Noon Rotarian of the Year (1988)
Rockwall Noon Rotarian President (1995)
Rockwall Area Man of the Year (1999-2000)
Rockwall ISD trustee (2004-2011)
Rotary District 5810 Rotarian of the Year (2001)
Dr. Lowrance with his wife Cyndie, have two daughters, Chloe and Shanae. He has been involved in foreign dental missions since 1987 and enjoys raising Shorthorn cattle, basketball, scuba diving and a variety of other sports and events in his free time.
Considering his own early experience, dentistry wasn’t a natural career choice for Dr. Stan Lowrance. “I hated going to the dentist as a kid,” he remembered. “It was scary. There was so much fear of the unknown. As a kid, I remember being held down in the dental chair and being aware that something horrible was happening to me.”
Then Dr. Stan met someone. “He was this really nice guy who just happened to be a dentist,” he said. “He took time to answer my questions, explain what he was going to do and why. I realized that going to the dentist didn’t have to be a frightening experience.”
He never forgot the contrast. “When I see someone who’s nervous, or even scared the way I was, it’s time for me to stop and get to know them,” he said. “I allow a minimum of an hour for every new patient. Part of that time is spent chatting, addressing any fears, questions or concerns they have. I never want anyone—of any age—to feel the way I did at the dentist as a kid.”

Work in Progress
(I’m sorry if I don't catch all of the times that Timpa was autocorrected to Tampa)
I was inspired to write this after seeing posts on reddit saying that no one cared about Tony Timpa because he was white, and seeing how on the wikipedia page for Police brutality in the United States, Tony Timpa’s name was shoehorned in a paragraph about May 2020.Â
Timpa was a victim of police brutality, he deserves to be treated with respect instead of having his murder used as justification for pushing a racist agenda.
I’m copying and pasting the paragraph: In May 2020, the issue of police brutality saw a surge in public response following the police killing of George Floyd. Protests occurred nationwide and internationally beginning in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 26, 2020. In 2016, Tony Timpa was killed in the same way in Dallas.[26]
That is the laziest thing I have ever seen, it doesn't even flow. It doesn't mention it happened in August 2016, It happened chronologically before George Floyd was killed so why is it after talking about Floyd. Further more it says that Timpa was killed in the same way, I don't remember reading news articles that said the police were on Timpa’s neck for 14minutes, I only remember reading how police were holding him face down with a knee on his back. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/aug/02/dallas-police-officers-video-bodycam-tony-timpa
Heres a link to a picture of Timpa that the Timpa’s family lawyer says that Floyd probably has similar (but not exact) marks on his body.: https://twitter.com/geoff_henley/status/1268182203919405056?s=20
I highlighted a better location where it would made sense to insert information about Timpa’s murder in the same wikipedia page. It seems like someone just wanted to use Timpa’s murder for not a good reason, but if they did any effort whatsoever they could have also mentioned that mentally ill people are likely to be victims of police violence but they didn't mention how Timpa called the police for help and told the operator that he had schizophrenia and didn't take his medication.
If someone claims that no one cared about Tony Timpa I think they are being disingenuous, ignorant and appears to be trying to further a racist agenda. Just look at how many people cared here:Â https://twitter.com/ESOP_STL/status/1156586732302798850?s=20
In 2019, I was at the dentist getting cavities filled when I watched Vicki Timpa on the news. She was talking about finally getting the bodycam footage released after 3 years of fighting in court to get justice for her son. Timpa was a real person who deserves justice, not to be used as an example to shut the people up who talking about police brutality. https://dfw.cbslocal.com/2019/08/02/tony-timpa-mother-reacts-dallas-police-video-son-death/Â
Before writing this I only knew about happened was that Timpa called the police for help and that he was murdered by in a horrific way.Â
I’m not sure why I’m adding this since some people keep claiming that no cared (or cares) about Timpa because he was white but Timpa’s birthday was June 5, 1984, his murder occured on August 10, 2016, and his middle name was Alan. He grew up in Rockwall. He loved model trains as a boy and became a popular football player in high school. https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/dallas-police-officers-under-investigation-following-death-of-unarmed-man/40744/
Three officers from the Dallas Police Department were involved when Timpa was killed in August 2016. https://www.boston.com/news/national-news/2019/08/01/police-laughed-and-joked-as-he-lost-consciousness-in-handcuffs-minutes-later-he-diedÂ
When people bring up Timpa to complain that people didn’t care because he was white, I haven’t seen a lot of them also mention that Timpa had schizophrenia. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/vb54bx/this-video-shows-a-mentally-ill-man-who-called-the-police-for-help-now-hes-dead
So why are they just bringing up the white “angle” instead of pointing out that mentally ill people are common victims of police violence?
Did you know his mother’s name is Vicki Timpa? Did she not care? So, whenever someone says that no one cared because he was white, you are intentionally ignoring his mother crying in press conferences, you’re ignoring how she suffered through a lawsuit (honestly, I’m not sure if it should be considered as multiple lawsuits but that doesn’t detract from my point) and had to fight for 3 years until the footage was released.
https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/13515242/timpa-v-the-city-of-dallas/ This link to the court history shows a fraction of how much Vicki Timpa cared about her son.Â
What I'm saying to the people who claim that no one cared about Tampa because he was white: You might be going “yeah, why does that matter, it was just his mother, she’s supposed to care, but I was just referring to the people protesting with and involved with Black Lives Matter”.
My reply is that saying “no one cared” is literally incorrect and ignores everyone who spent YEARS fighting to get the bodycam footage released. The whole reason why we have the horrific footage of Timpa being killed is because someone CARED.
Do you want to know what Vicki Tampa said YEARS before the video was released:
"Why can't they take their badge? Why can't they turn in their badge? Why can't they call me? Why can't they make me whole? Why?" she asked, as tears streamed down her face. "I will keep going until I get those answers." source:Â https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/dallas-police-officers-under-investigation-following-death-of-unarmed-man/40744/
I want everyone to respect Timpa’s family privacy but other evidence of someone “caring” is how on a complaint filed in District Court on November 3, 2016, Vicki Timpa is listed as a “next friend of K.T., a minor child”, so it sounds like Timpa had more than one family member who “cared”. So, that’s at least two people who “cared”. Please don’t be rude and dismiss Timpa’s family by saying that no one cared. source: https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/13515242/1/timpa-v-the-city-of-dallas/Â
Have you ever heard of Cary Aspinwell? She is a reporter who has been publishing about Timpa since at least 2017, I think she might care about Timpa since she acknowledged Timpa’s birthday yesterday on June 5.
The Dallas Morning News, Inc. “cared” enough to “respectfully request that the Court” … to “direct the clerk to file TDMN’s amicus brief at that time.”Â
Amicus curiae means “friend of the court”, so that means that a major newspaper cared enough about what happened to Tony Timpa to want to file a brief with the court, as a 3rd party. So, anyone who says that no cared seems to be saying that newspapers just pay lawyers for fun. https://twitter.com/caryaspinwall/status/1156543499958935558?s=20
I think it’s safe to assume that Geoff Henley cares too. Henley is the attorney who represented the Timpa family, I think its very possible that Henley can take a job that is more profitable. I admit this is a very low bar but Henley might care about what happened to Timpa since he still tweets about Timpa. https://twitter.com/geoff_henley?lang=en
It was kind of sad how on June 5, 2020 I saw people using Timpa’s name to say that no one cared when police killed a white person, but  from the people who posted things like that, I didn’t see any birthday tributes talking about wanting justice for Timpa at the same time. To be clear I’m not claiming that there wasn’t any or that no one cared about Timpa’s life.
Other evidence that people cared about what happened to Timpa was that Dallas officers claim that they got death threats after the video was released. https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/dallas-police-officers-receive-death-threats-after-viral-video-of-in-custody-death/287-8067c53c-f9e2-46cb-a531-ee1466770512
I’m tired of seeing people use Tony Timpa’s name to further their agenda to try to further divide people, which I honestly don’t really understand why when Timpa’s murder should be used as a reason why no one is safe against police brutality, so everyone should be against police brutality.
Timpa’s murder by the Dallas Police Department shouldn’t be used to distract people into being against Black Lives Matter, it should be used to say that we can’t forget about any victim of police brutality. Timpa’s murder is as an example of when police departments get away with murder with minimal or no consequences.
What happened:Â Timpa was the one who called the police the night he was held down for 14 minutes and died. I want to mention that he was handcuffed while being held down.
The three officers from the Dallas Police Department involved are Keven Mansell, Danny Vasquez and Dustin Dillard. They were indicted in 2017 on charges of misdemeanor deadly conduct, but the Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot dismissed the charges in March 2019.
I don’t understand how the police managed to kill Timpa when he was already handcuffed by private security guards before they arrived on the scene. It sounds like this should have been an easy night but someone still died.
Mike Mata, the president of the Dallas Police Association, said the officers are not to blame.
In my mind, it makes logical sense that if you have bad performance on your job then it makes sense to get fired, they weren’t fired, in fact Dallas spent $11 million in ONLY five years to settle more than 20 lawsuits against police. https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/southcentral/2017/08/16/461283.htm
If someone believes in government fiscal responsibility, then they should be against protecting police officers who make cities waste so much money because of unneeded violence.
My impression is that the Dallas Police Department only wanted to protect officers from consequences.:
“On the eight-minute recording, the head of the disciplinary hearing says that if the officers learned something from the incident they'll probably be able to continue as city police. They then received written reprimands.
"I personally believe you guys are better than that," the commander said. "But I still need you on the force. So if you learned something from it, most likely we can move forward from here."”

I have a question for everyone who brings up Timpa to point out some so-called “hypocrisy”: Have you ever heard of Eric Garner, Kelvion Walker, Genevive Dawes, Deborah Danner, Tony McDade, Atatiana Jefferson, Willie McCoy, Sandra Bland, Bartholomew Williams, Spencer Mims III, Christian Chavez (killed in 2012 at age 18), and so many other people.
A small-time newspaper named The New York Times wrote about Timpa. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/01/us/tony-timpa-dallas-police-body-cam.html
When someone says that no one cared about Timpa because he was white, are they saying that Vicki Timpa didn’t care?
I’ve seen people who are using Timpa’s name in their bad faith nonsensical statements that no one cared that he died because he was white. How is it possible that statement is relevant? We should this time to shine a bright light on every victim of police brutality, not use another victim to try to shut down people who are trying to advocate against police brutality.
On the website of Black Lives Matter, it says their “mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.” Also, on their website it says that: “We work vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension, all people.”Â
If someone feels uncomfortable with the statement that “white supremacy should not exist” then they should examine why they feel so insecure. Timpa shouldn’t be used as an example of why someone should be critical of today’s protestors who were galvanized by the murder of George Floyd.
In my impression, people have brought up Timpa’s murder to say that the Black community is full of hypocrites because they didn’t protest police brutality after three officers from the Dallas Police Department murdered Timpa.Â
If anyone feels that way then they should protest for Tony Timpa right now instead of complaining about people who want to make sure what happened to Timpa doesn't happen to anyone else.
Also, I think it's relevant to point out that a lot of people are unemployed right now so they have more time to protest and organize themselves.
And if someone is complaining about why did they not protest after Timpa died, are you criticizing Vicki Timpa? (I honestly don't know if she organized protests),Â
Or are they trying to say that Vicki Timpa didn’t do enough to get justice for her son after she got the body cam footage released after 3 YEARS of trying?
Vicki Timpa still cares, and she's doing more for his memory then people using the murder of her son as an excuse for racism. https://starlocalmedia.com/rowlettlakeshoretimes/news/tri-east-naacp-launches-movement-to-get-controversial-restraint-method-removed/article_c424b738-a478-11ea-93f6-3bea447001ae.htmlÂ

The growing cost of medical services and health insurance in the United States is a problem that is not isolated to a single demographic. Many people are impacted. The latest surveys of American businesses report that health insurance and benefits are one of their greatest expenses, second only to employee payroll.
Companies used to subsidize a greater share of the cost of insurance, but now employees – especially those with families – bear a far greater burden than ever before. As a result, households are paying more in out-of-pocket costs for health care whether they have employer-sponsored coverage or buy it on the individual market.
If health care expenses are increasingly taking up a larger portion of your household budget, we may be able to help. There are various types of insurance products and tax-advantaged savings accounts that can help defray out-of-pocket spending. It’s also worth consulting with a tax professional to assess how you may be able to deduct medical expenses from your return – one of the few deductions still available for those who itemize.
There is currently great debate over whether America’s system of paying for health care can be fixed or if it needs to be entirely overhauled. For years, the health insurance industry has pursued a strategy of encouraging their members to become more informed medical care consumers – to basically “shop” for lower prices and better value among providers and facilities. It’s true that many people are now more aware of how prices can vary, but this knowledge is often borne out of unfortunate experience.
There are ways to help fix the broken system. For example, pharmaceutical companies lack transparency in how they price drugs, and it seems they vary what they charge for the same medications based on who can afford to pay more. A study conducted in 2018 found that approximately one out of every five prescriptions requires a higher out-of-pocket payment for insured people than the standard retail price for uninsured patients.
To make matters worse, insurers made pharmacists agree not to inform customers of the discrepancy in price if they wanted to be included in the insurer’s network. Congress recently passed legislation negating this “gag order” on behalf of patients. However, the practice of charging the insured more than uninsured patients still exists, so you should always ask for a comparison between the two prices. Even if you have drug coverage, you are allowed to pay the uninsured price and cash in on those savings.
Another form of insurance that may need further scrutiny is dental. A basic dental insurance plan typically covers cleanings, fillings and other routine care. However, more complex procedures such as a crown, bridge or root canal may only be covered for half the cost – if any coverage is provided at all. Furthermore, dental insurance usually has pretty low annual caps compared to medical insurance, such as $1,000 or $1,500 per year.
One way to expand coverage for dental care is to see what your health care insurance plan might cover. Often these policies will provide at least some coverage for procedures deemed “medically necessary”, such as dental repair resulting from injury, some periodontal surgery and even appliances prescribed for sleep apnea. It’s a good idea to call your insurer and/or review your policy for dental services that are categorized as either covered or excluded services. Some dentist offices are starting to collect health insurance information from patients and even filing relevant claims on their behalf.
