Okay okay we’ve talked about the first time Whumpee goes to the doctor after escaping captivity, but what about their first time going to the dentist?

Like, do you think Whumper gave Whumpee a tooth brush? No way. Their teeth are rotting out of their fucking skull. Many are cracked and chipped. Their gums are so swollen that any attempt at brushing their teeth leaves them bleeding, and the taste of blood is all too familiar…

The only ways for Whumpee to fix their teeth will hurt like hell. They’ll mean being completely at someone’s mercy with whirring tools in their mouth and the taste of blood and tooth fragments for hours and hours. They want the pain to stop, they want to be able to chew without tearing up, but the second they sit down in that godforsaken chair they start bawling their eyes out. They can’t do it, they can’t, painkillers aren’t enough, why can’t they just knock Whumpee out for this?? They’re immediately begging for mercy and the dentist is like “what” and Caretaker is like “this will make you feel so much better” and none of it helps.

Eventually Whumpee is back at home without having anything happen to their teeth. It’s a relief and a pain and they just want it to stop but they can’t go to the dentist, so what can they do?

Practical Magic

The metallic scent of blood was thick in the air, it hung around in the back of Art's throat and had him practically salivating. Once upon a time he had been as pathetic as the man that was strapped to the chair, a meat sack with no real meaning. Those days had long since passed and Art was having so much fun because of it.

A thick needle is clutched tightly between his grimy fingers as his other hand forced the man's face toward the heavens. Art's hips do a little shimmy as he brought the needle toward the man's mouth before he froze in place.

Pencil thin brows arched as his gaze flicked toward Mahito before he flashed an eager grin. His index finger raised up as if to say 'watch' before he looked down at his victim and gave a waggle of his brows.

The bloodcurdling screams are music to Art's ears as he forced the needle between the man's two front teeth. Ivory roots snap as the force proved to be too much, the man gurgled as blood pooled in the back of his throat.

A quick study would show that this poor soul should've passed long ago, yet something is keeping him tethered to the mortal plane. Something dark and sinister, something that was clearly latched onto Art.

oh im so mad i have a cavity in my tooth and like what the fuck i brush my teeth twice or sometimes three times a day i literally Have to or i cant relax enough to sleep i floss after eating like anything and before i brush i have special mouthwash i use in the middle of the day too i am Obsessive about my teeth. and i get a fucking cavity. WHAT IS THE POINT GRRR IM SO SICK OF DENTAL WORK two abcesses a wisdom tooth and that whole debacle with my stupid fuck of a dentist shoving a broken piece of my tooth INTO MY SINUS CAVITY and now i have to get a FILLING maybe multiple bc who knows there could be others LIKE wtf. just take them all out at this point whatever omfg.

AND MY DENTAL INSURANCE DOESNT COVER SHIT so this will be probably like a thousand dollars again hopefully not more and what else? yeah i cant stop thinking of that fucking episode of CatDog where they went to the dentist because when i first saw that episode like 10 years ago i got so fucking mad i still have a screenshot of me bitching about it. heres an excerpt from the episode sypnosis

“When the dentist opens Dog's mouth and examines it, he finds his mouth perfect, which surprises Cat. Then, he checks Cat's mouth and notices that his mouth is unclean and loaded with all sorts of decay. The dentist scans CatDog through an X-ray and discovers that whatever damage Dog does to his teeth will affect Cat's teeth and vice versa.”

i havent seen him in a long time and its not like i ever really took a good look at his mouth. and he was never one to do a big toothy grin or anything.

I LOOOVEE BRACES. so much. sooo much it drives me actually crazy. i used to have braces myself, and there is smth thats appealing to me with like. rocks back and forth. say for example trey or lilia having braces and needing to get them tightened and then complaining about the soreness after. Also the visual of someone having rubber bands with their braces makes me go nuts crazy. they kinda look like little fangs. which is fucking hot !!! tbqh !!!

if it helps at all maybe bc you at least don't have to feel guilty, sometimes dental issues are just genetic and you're doomed to have tooth issues even if you take really good care of them. (on the other hand, i've heard of people with terrible hygiene habits who never get cavities 😭) supportive energy for you ✨✨✨✨✨

aww thank you! it is indeed also genetic. my mom's family has terrible enamel and my dad's family has terrible teeth,,, placement?? lol idk the right word for it 😭😭 i need to get invisalign bc my teeth were too weak for braces. but my insurance never covered it!!! so i have to wait until i have a better job </3 america is awesome haha. i take amazing care of them now! but alas. i remember one time i got a cleaning six months after getting a ton of work done, id flossed + brushed religiously, used special prescription toothpaste and mouthwash and i had four new cavities 💀💀

Knows to expect an adjustment of some kind; to feel his lord's will pass through him and change something they've found wanting, whether it's the depth of his hungers, the set of his jaw, or some strange unnameable thing only Dream can feel. None of those this time: my teeth, the Corinthian thinks, knows, by the way Dream's hand drifts upwards towards his right eye. He starts to open it wider, playing at being docile because he's not allowed to bite and it'll go faster if he doesn't struggle, but--

A metallic clink: pliers in a bowl of teeth, HIS teeth, pried from one eye socket with surgical precision while he thrashed and roared and wept like an animal, which he wasn't and had never been. Cabal knew as much as he did that the thing on the table (himself, though he tried desperately to pretend it was something else, that he was somewhere else, that this wasn't happening) wasn't a person. He told it as much, very casually, and ignored the Corinthian's agonised snarl of protest when another tooth was pulled loose. Whatever was streaming from his mouth wasn't blood, and he wanted to push it back in along with the teeth Cabal had taken, but he couldn't MOVE.

He came back to himself in a slow, strange wave, and was appalled to find that two things had happened without his permission. The first was that his teeth were clamped around Dream's knuckles, desperately trying to sever his fingers, which hadn't bled so much as a drop in response. That was bad enough, but the second--the second was that his whole body was shaking, heaving with frantic breaths and sobs like an animal with an actual nervous system, which wasn't a reaction he could remember ever having to anything before, and Dream wasn't bleeding but the Corinthian's eyes were definitely wet with something.

Horrified, he did the only thing his instincts would let him: he bit down harder.

Gross dental stuff under readmore

For a couple of days my gum between two of my right upper molars has been swollen and sore. I think I got some kind of food item jammed into the gum or between the teeth or something. I've brushed, I've picked at it, I thought I'd removed any detritus, but tonight it was sore and swollen as ever

So I went in the bathroom and grabbed a flossing pick, which I only do in the most severe situations mind you because I really don't like flossing, and I gently worked it between the teeth trying to loosen any foreign object that might be causing a problem

And oh. I loosened something

I felt something with the pick and scraped gently - and suddenly my gum was just... pouring blood. I mean, not an absurd amount from an objective standpoint but much MUCH more blood than I want in my MOUTH

It took so many rinses until it stopped bleeding. Whatever the foreign object/food shard was, it is definitely removed now (knock on wood). Brushed my teeth. Rinsed a dozen more times.

It feels less swollen now. Must have been starting to get infected, I hope I headed it off

Wish I could figure out what food caused that to happen because I think I would never fucking eat it again

Learned the hard way that the dental visits that caused me all of my dental trauma were legitimately shady visits, and now my mouth is almost $5k into repair work. Didn’t realize you could get a cavity at the line of a crown, also having to get two crowns replaced because the monster didn’t actually clear the teeth underneath.

nothing wrong again. i mean other than what i thought. how do you say to your dentist ‘hi sorry for showing up all the time i’m not a freak with a kink my mom who has way better teeth than me almost died over the pandemic because her dentist missed something and she got a massive abscess over a dead tooth she didn’t even know she had which has caused me to latch on mentally to dental issues being the root of all my problems’ without sounding insane. asking for a friend.

general tw for parental and peer abuse

• vicky’s parents used to be really abusive toward her because of her attitude issues and they had her at an “inconvenient” time. they softened up a lot toward tootie which caused a lot of feelings of jealousy and lashing out.

• in her teen years her family was very scared of her because of her defense mechanisms against the abuse she faced, growing the mentality that nobody could hurt her if she hurt them first.

• tootie still loves her despite the bad blood, and they do get along sometimes. it’s a very rocky dynamic.

• vicky used to be best friends with dale for many years, both of them bonding over mutual interests and shitty parents.

• her obsession with money came about because she wanted to move away from her parents as soon as possible, so she’d do any odd job that would pay. dale didn’t like to be associated with his family in his younger years so he kept it a secret even from vicky, so she had no idea about the kind of money he had access to.

• doug was very neglectful of dale and usually felt like he was in the way of his work, so eventually dale was allowed to just stay with vicky for as long as he wanted. he felt like he’d be happier with a friend, and vicky felt like she’d be safer and have help getting the money she needed.

• for a while their working dynamic was mostly healthy, but it devolved into vicky demanding work out of him and forcing him to do jobs, mostly for her lemonade stand! she’d have it up for all the hot months, then switch to cocoa in the winter and fall.

• she had him work especially hard the time she wanted tickets on top of her moving fund, and grabbed two random boys she was acquainted with to speed up the process. she let THEM go after she got what she wanted, and swung back to other jobs once dale had gone and couldn’t do work for her anymore.

• she never physically hurt him, but was still very demanding and would threaten or guilt trip him when she needed to. most of his teeth rotted out from a lack of care which needed a lot of dental work when he eventually went home.

• they haven’t spoken to each other in decades, but they think of each other a lot. dale is still terrified of her, but misses her and the good times they had together. vicky holds a lot of regret for all of the terrible things she’s done and continues to do, but she doesn’t know how to apologize and process trauma so she doubles down on her bad choices.

• they COULD amend their relationship if they really tried. they probably won’t.

• the other girls she knew as a teenager were incredibly toxic toward her. they pushed her to be worse and would emotionally and mentally abuse her if she went against them. if she hadn’t met them, she’d still have been pretty awful, but she would have been kinder to timmy and dale.

• mark is all here for vicky being a vicious beast but he IS trying to encourage her to heal and be less violent, he knows it’s hurting her in the long run.

• and they’re married, because i always thought they were cute! i hope we get to see mark again in ANW

• she does get along somewhat with timmy in current years. they still argue plenty, and there’s a good amount of resentment held, but they can laugh with each other now.
