Alena Kostornaia – my 3As are the result of wounded pride
A interview from tass.ru’s Veronika Sovetova with Alena Kostornaia after her FS. Translated with Google Translate, edited by @birdie02.
The third stage of the figure skating Grand Prix series ended with another triumph of the coaching school of Eteri Tutberidze - this time, the winner of the tournament was her 16-year-old pupil Alena Kostornaia. She performed three 3As in two programs all together. More recently, these jumps could be found only in men's skating [t/n: 3A is a jump rarely found in ladies’ skating]. Kostornaia told TASS how a 3A appeared in her programs, what wounded pride means for an athlete, about the secrets of the expressiveness of her skating, and the subtleties of make-up.
Alena, firstly, congratulations on the victory. Three 3As – this is truly impressive. That’s not something that is trained easily, how is this possible? Even at the Russian team test skates you denied even the possibility of this jump.
I was not ready for test rentals, and I do not know why. I was so unprepared that I could not even cleanly skate my normal content; it did not work out. And then I decided to change something.
You were risky at the very beginning of the season. When exactly did this decision of jumping the 3A come?
Literally a day after the control rentals, I went to training and decided to try the 4S. True, the coaches told me to leave it for now and try the 3A.
And your coaches suggested to you to try the 3A right away?
[Initially, I] rejected [trying the 3A] - "I do not want [to do it],” "I will not [do it].” They suggested trying on a jumping rod (a device that allows skaters to try new jumps with a minimal risk of damage).
Did you agree to jumping the 3A with the jumping rod?
Well, I did not. I decided it was better for me [to jump without the jumping rod] than jumping with a fishing rod. Of course, I fell, fell, fell, and then once, I successfully jumped the 3A. Then the 3A worked out twice at training. At some point I already can jump the 3A three or four times, and then I realized that there was a chance of jumping it in competition.
But this is only a chance. What happened next?
Then came Daniil Markovich (Gleichengauz, choreographer) and he said to me, “The other coaches told me that you are jumping 3As. Are you jumping it? Show me." But I have not yet jumped a 3A in a program before. In general, I was falling on this jump when I attempted it in a program run-through, and on the third day [of attempting the 3A within her free program] I began to exit this jump better.
But there are two 3As in your free program.
Then the coaches told me – okay, let's plan for two 3As within the free skate. You skate the first 3A, and keep the second 3A as a backup for now. So I started to skate with one backup 3A. Only then did the coaches tell me – well, since you are already doing the free program with two 3As, what’s the point with just one? As a result, I did it, it’s my fault (laughs) [t/n: ?].
Alena, such trust and such confidence of trainers is just priceless for an athlete.
Yes, [that’s the] truth. And another effective moment of motivation – a lot of people told me before that: "Alena, you have such good jumps, you should jump them [t/n: possibly talking about the 3A].”
How did you assess your chances for the season before its start?
Even before the September [Russian] test skates, when discussing plans, I was very hurt internally when I heard from different people: "Well, yes, you have done well, but if only you could have jumped a more difficult jump.” These "if only" piss me off! Does that mean that in the second half of the season I will again skate in the juniors [ranks]?
It turns out that wounded pride works wonders?
That's for sure.
Skipping over jumps, where does your beautiful expression and movements come from? Only the lazy does not talk about it in the world of figure skating. How does this happen at your young age?
I don’t know. When I was still very young, I went to acting classes. Maybe it helped. But this is what I know for sure – if I like something, I will go all the way. If I like some music, then I will push myself to perform it to the maximum. Pushing myself so that others will talk about it – that’s really good.
Favorite music, favorite composers?
I like any music whenever I feel it enter my heart, and that’s it. And I know for sure that if I like the music for the program, I’ll prefer to perform that than music choices done without consulting.
And when did it last like that?
Literally yesterday. I watched the American pair skaters’ performances at IDF 2019, the bronze medalists (Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier). Somewhere in the middle of the program, there was music that I liked a lot.
I will ask a very feminine question. Despite your young age, you always have very good makeup during your performances, almost perfect eyeliner and lipstick shade. Do you do your own makeup by yourself?
Yes.
Did you learn it by yourself?
I had to. Before performances, many young skaters have their makeup done by their parents, including me. But once there was a situation where my mother could not come to my competition, and she could not style my hair and do my makeup before I performed.
I can imagine that she often could not come to competitions, and as a mother, that’s just a tragedy.
That one competition in particular, by the way, was my first Moscow Championships. Back then, I was 12 – 13 years old. In general, I had to do all of the hair and makeup by myself.
And the line of your lip contour didn't creep up to behind your ears [t/n: ?]?
Not a bit. I observed how my mother painted my face, I saw how she styled my hair. She did all of this by herself. And you know what? I really enjoyed it.

Ah, Haven and Brandon... that is such a magical program when it’s on, but that... was not it. She doubled their side-by-side jumps, fell on the throw. Those mistakes are going to cost them, but the end of that program is just amazing beyond words.
124.92, 186.25 and into first place.
