“Buck—”

“Can I ask you something?” Buck says at the same time and Eddie huffs but gives him a smile and a nod to continue. Buck steers them over to the kitchen table and holds one of Eddie’s hands when they sit down. “What happened last night? What made you panic? Can you tell me?”

Eddie opens his mouth but isn’t sure he has words to say. He should explain. He should say something. Buck’s request is so gentle and he deserves to know. Eddie just… doesn’t know how to say it. Maybe he doesn’t want to? He doesn’t really want to because it’s complicated and confusing and painful. But. He can. He can say something? “I…”

What happened. Why did he panic. It’s not that difficult. 

Why is it so difficult? Why is there nothing in his head and nothing in his mouth and why can’t he make it work? It’s Buck. He can tell Buck anything. “I don’t know what to say. How to say. Or explain. I don’t—” He makes a vague gesture with one hand like it can help him manufacture speech, but ends up with nothing.

“Okay. Um,” Buck says, still gentle, still patient. “I think I know what happened. I have a guess. And— and I might be wrong. But I keep thinking about what you said. I kept replaying it in my head.”

Fuck. If anyone could figure it out from nothing, it would have to be Buck. And he’s not sure he likes the idea that Buck has been stewing over this and analyzing it. He’s probably worried. And maybe blaming himself. And the last thing Eddie wants is to make Buck think that he’s hurt him somehow. “What do you think happened?”

Buck doesn’t quite look at him. “Well. I— I know the things that make you panic. I know what you’ve been working on and struggling with. I know what I’ve needed and asked you for recently. So. I think—” He takes time to take a long breath and seems like he wants to turn and look, but keeps himself from doing so. “I think you were trying to tell me you would have sex with me if I needed it.”

i do NOT condone cheating but i feel like some people are failing to acknowledge that eddie was completely in love and head over heels for shannon, that was his wife. they got married early on, they had a kid together, and she kept showing up off and on in his life then died. he is still obviously mourning, he never really closed that chapter and then saw her literal carbon copy in front of him and absolutely unraveled. that man is continuing to go through grief

from chapter 13 (does this count as thirsty!Eddie? probably as close as it gets lol) Context-- Buck gave Eddie very normal not at all sexy massage because they’re just Roommates, and Eddie offered to return the favor. Buck turned him down and rushed to go take a shower. 🫢

When Buck returns to their room, freshly showered, soggy and steamy and flushed pink, and with a relaxed smile on his face as he sinks into the bed and closes his eyes. Eddie’s pretty sure he jerked off. At least 98% of the way sure. 

Buck usually likes to shower at night before bed and when they all quarantined together, there were nights he came to bed with a gooey, dopey smile and nights where he didn’t. Nights where he didn’t typically meant he was too exhausted to shower or his shower was super quick and perfunctory. 

Eddie doesn’t know for sure, but that was always his guess. 

And it’s fine. It doesn’t bother him. It’s normal. A lot of people would argue healthy as well. 

But there’s something unsettled in Eddie’s stomach, something aching in his chest. It kind of feels like rejection? Or maybe disappointment that he missed out? 

He doesn’t even know if or how he can participate in sex ever again, but what if he could have when Buck wanted that tonight? What if he could have been allowed to touch him and kiss him and bring him relief and relaxation and a flood of blissful feelings like what Buck did for him? What if Eddie could have wrapped around him and made him feel loved and cared for? 

He would have. 

God. Maybe he wants to. Maybe he really wants to and since when does that ever happen? 

But it’s just a fantasy, right? Sex has never been peaceful and blissful and more about love than anything else. Not really. Not for him. There were parts of it that were okay, that he enjoyed, but he’d probably panic or start feeling uncomfortable and pressured and he’d have to check out to Pluto or something if they actually tried anything. 

Besides. Could he really have sex with Buck knowing that Buck is everything and that Eddie needs him so badly he doesn’t even know how to handle those feelings, if all of it is just sex to Buck? Maybe Buck could want him for sex because he wants sex and loves it, needs it, but it doesn’t mean that he’d actually want Eddie for more than that. 

Buck reaches across the bed where Eddie is still sitting up against the headboard and brushes Eddie’s arm. “You okay, Eds? You still sore?”

“I’m okay.” He gets out of bed to find a shirt to sleep in but changes his mind and grabs a whole fresh set of clothes. “I’m going to shower, too.” There likely isn’t much hot water left, at least not for twenty to thirty minutes, but he can take a fast, two minute cold shower if he has to.

Buck nods sleepily and closes his eyes. And he’s falling asleep in Eddie’s bed. Not even Eddie’s anymore. It’s theirs. He’s warm and soft and his hair is damp, untamed curls and he smells like the jojoba and coconut body wash he found and brought home and raves about and he’s in their bed, and he’s all happy and relaxed from an orgasm, and Eddie could have done that for him. With him. He would have. 

Maybe he couldn’t have, but he would have tried? He wants to try and wants to have that and share that and this fucking never happens, and now he’s, what, jealous? That Buck touched himself when Eddie wanted to touch him?

because this is a prime example of “non-english speaker who writes a work that blows your mind” phenomenon. i will be now using it as a future reference, thank you.

because WHAT THE HELL?? this is so good.

let’s be real, 9-1-1 is not a fandom abundant with unusual aus, so this is a treasure. i was fed, hydrated, given a good night’s sleep and a firm beautiful hug, thank you.

the characterization, the buddie relationship- all of it is chef’s kiss. i also really liked the way emotional states were portrayed and narrated here, literal fucking gold. there are a lot of very intense extreme emotions in there and the fact that they stayed so consistent and true to the characterizations and fit into a logical progressive arc makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. also, autistic eddie diaz, my beloved. but ALSO, demisexual eddie diaz, even more beloved and very well-explored at that.

i also LOVED shannon in this one and their relationship with eddie. and also, just in general, i loved the way all the little details tied together in one deep and full picture in this fic - christopher meeting buck before eddie did, buck researching other people’s coma experiences. i just love how many thought was put in the creation of this fic and it really paid off.

and the anticipation built before the real-life buddie meeting had me squirming and flailing my hands, i was so SO happy with how it had me on the edge of my seat. and the meeting itself - fucking beautiful. all of the work is, really.

but, above all, the premise and the way it was brought to life in this work had me absolutely hooked. i wish all the fic writers a very having mad interesting dreams that inspire you to write mad interesting stories.

also, eddie smelling like pomegranates was an absolute delight and one of my favorite details in this fic, i did not blink on this reference.

anyway, 9736362414167384926151316839/10, am HIGHLY recommending. i am hereby prohibiting the author from talking themselves down and downplaying their brilliance and skill, because this is amazing. eternally grateful to the author for having the courage to post the first story in their non-native language and leaving absolutely no crumbs, am eagerly awaiting the second part.

Y’know, there’s one thing I don’t get about Arkham Rids. And it’s the whole bit about him being aro or ace or both. Lots of people say he’s aro/ace because ‘the base nature of (Catwoman’s attachment to Batman) disgusts’ him. And that’s fine. Honestly, I’m disgusted by it too sometimes. And so are some people who aren’t into BatCat in general. The thing that gets me is that people use this one line as evidence or something, and then leave no room for discussion, which I think is a bit stubborn. Yes, their overtly sexual relationship grossed me out too. Yes, I myself am arospec and aspec. But that’s the thing, it’s a spectrum. So while I understand that people get frustrated that he may very well be one of the few characters in media who is aro/ace, people have to understand that 1. It’s a spectrum. Attraction is a very complicated thing. 2. One line, does not a confirmed aro/ace make. And 3. I’m sure lots of allo peeps can be disgusted by a ‘base nature attachment’ as well. Lots of people, regardless of orientation don’t like hearing about what I can only assume Riddler interprets as an extremely sexual relationship that somehow breeded feelings. Which, to me at least, sound more like a demisexual sentiment that a flat out asexual one. It’s fine either way in my opinion. It’s just frustrating to me how some people aren’t open for discussion or nuance. Especially when I myself fall into said nuance.

but as for the eddie, i think it's probably coming from two places:

wally wingert said in a cameo i saw once that he can't see the riddler flirting, he doesn't see him being romantic or anything like that. i think he might also have mentioned it in a behind the scenes interview or something? that plus i guess some people think that if he had a woman captive and didn't shoot his shot, then he's not into that? but that's a stretch and a little bit weird lmao

here's the thing though, there's so much eddie does say and doesn't say, and it's all down to how you interpret a character or their tone. some people go MAD for arkham!verse riddlecat, they see sexual tension between them and the way they talk. some people see eddie as canonically bisexual because he's depicted as such in other canon sources. some people see him being repulsed by catwoman or batman or sex in general. which brings me to the second point:

canon doesn't matter a tiny bit when people have their favourites. you can do what you want, you can think what you want. i headcanon arkham!eddie as bisexual, monogamous and autistic, because i can. and because the source material doesn't say that he isn't. and even if it did, it wouldn't stop me lmao which i think is where the big thing with eddie (and a lot of riddlers actually!) comes from. there's that little bit of a suggestion, a lil bit of hope and like you said, people cling to it, because the representation isn't anywhere else for them!

but ultimately people can do whatever they want for whatever reason forever and ever 💚 i know it's maybe annoying when some people won't hear you out about it, but also, they don't have to. which sucks for you, but they're entitled to be stubborn bub!

all that matters is that he's fictional and that people can do what they want with him u-u 💚
