Man, Listen.

I keep seeing timelines of the dynamics that led to this moment that read “over the last 4 years” OR “Over the last ten years”  OR “Since Reagan” OR “Over the last 2 hundred years.” All of these timelines neatly leapfrog over the relevant recent history that set this table. So I’ll just say it: Any analysis of 21st century racism/white supremacy/nationalism/abusive government/racist police violence that doesn’t include the so-called “war on terror” is fucking bullshit.

The radical expansion of the powers of law enforcement started post 9/11 with the USA Patriot Act and we are all living through the end result right now. (Yes, of course the cops/military/Feds were more than capable of violent, racist fuckery before that moment and there’s a long history of examples we all know-- but post 9/11* was when their powers to arrest without cause, surveil without warrants and torture with impunity were LEGALIZED.) Post 9/11 US police budgets soared into the billions (with a B) and they got military grade weapons and equipment along with their expanded powers. Ex-soldiers (and/or wannabe soldiers) who’d gobbled up anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia swelled the ranks of US police departments and embraced their power to enact violence with impunity at a scale that is literally unprecedented in US history. What did yall think would happen next? That they’d confine their abusive policing to Arab boogeymen? Heh.

The direct line between that moment and this one is made plain by the flat refusal of both parties to employ the term “terrorism” to describe violent mass sedition activities by white people. Even after a group of armed white men motivated by anti-state ideology stormed the Capitol building Joe Biden described their actions as “BORDERING on sedition.” I am not advocating for the use of this dubious term, I’m saying that the refusal to employ it consistently is about preserving its political utility to demonize Arabs and Muslims. Creating special terms that “legally” only apply to people of color enshrines the two-tiered system we see everywhere, but that they don’t acknowledge exists.The “war on terror” -- not to mention the literal war in Iraq-- were both based on racist conspiracy theories and used to expand powers and enshrine policies designed to preserve, protect and expand white supremacy. Sound familiar?

It shouldn’t be a surprise that post 9-11 expanded law enforcement powers have also devastated other communities of color. Legalized warrantless searches, expanded surveillance and increased leeway for violent policing turbo-charged the “wars” on drugs and illegal immigration that disproportionately targeted Black and Brown people. We’ve seen the endgame of these powers and policies enacted on protestors of color, including Native and Black Lives Matter activists-- who have both seen leaders and community members murdered in numbers too big to be coincidence. And of course everyday Black Americans-- already vulnerable to police abuses-- have been targeted by police with escalating violence in cases that defy description-- walking down the street, playing in the park, sleeping at home in bed... murdered, murdered, murdered. It is against the backdrop of these police killings that a mob of white people stormed the Capitol with minimal police interference (and growing evidence of complicity).

The refusal-- even among the self-described ”left”-- to own the abuses heaped upon Arabs and Muslims in the United States and around the world with US support and/or tacit approval, means that there is no possibility to actually stop the cascading wave of white nationalism that threatens to drown all of us.

(*Post 9-11 was also the moment when the Executive branch radically expanded its powers, pulling  the three branches of government way out of balance. So anyone clutching pearls over Trump’s assertions that he can whatever he wants because he’s President needs to wake the fuck up. The US Presidency has been imperial in its powers since W... and yes, habibi that includes Obama.)
