hey so fun fact this guy?
Tumblr media
yeah he might actually be a mainline-ified demikids demon
not joking
Tumblr media
glasya labolas only appeared in demikids light and dark versions as a boss and is, from what i can tell, unable to be fused. the recent demon showcase seems to display fusion as a possibility which if so yippee! here’s to another fucked up dog.
but what’s especially striking is in terms of design
Tumblr media
i’d say 5v’s relatively more accurate than demikids but definitely isn’t 100% based on mythological depictions. glasya is a gryphon with the head of a dog (and apparently baby goat horns as shown in this illustration in the infernal dictionary). this seems to be the depiction 5v drew from because of the uh very suspicious smile but i appreciate the overall change in tone.
a lot of the more metallic(?) designs actually take a ton from ancient mesopotamian art and jewelry—fitting as the creature is of goetic origin. overall super interesting but the design might not jive with others. definitely a standout when it comes to the designs of other goetic demons depicted within megaten :)

actually speaking of SMT let’s talk about the demikids (devil children) spin-offs. for starters demikids has always been interesting as a concept because it’s a mon taming game geared towards children released in 2000 (so it’s inspirations are pretty obvious) but what makes it interesting is that SMT as a series is literally the predecessor to the modern mon taming genre (with megami tensei for the famicom being regarded as the first game to include the mechanic of recruiting enemy monsters into the player’s party (i word it like that because for all i know there’s a secret game with that mechanic that came out before megami tensei but that probably didn’t happen)) BUT they still decided they wanted to make a more marketable one anyways.
anyways the only DemiKids titles to release internationally were the Light and Dark versions for GBA (2002). these ones are the kinds of split-versions where instead of being the same game twice but slightly different, they have completely different plots (that intertwine) and so forth. the two games also have completely different difficulties, with Dark being (very) significantly harder that Light. which is an interesting idea in a vacuum, but i imagine that the games’ marketing probably did not reflect this at all so i keep imagining tragic scenarios in which, like, a poor grandmother of the world gives some kids one of each version thinking it’s the same and the one with dark just cannot get past the games first area at all (<- happened to me). although thinking about it, at least in the US i can’t really imagine a grandma in 2002 seeing a game called “demikids” that’s all about demons jumping at the chance to buy it. anyways that’s just my demikids hypothetical scenario. also the tie-in anime for light & dark is partially lost media

Megamigender
when one’s gender is connected to one or more of the Megami Tensei games
Megamigender Flag:
Tumblr media
Also known as megatengender. I noticed that I become more female-aligned when playing Persona 3 Portable, so I decided to coin a new term for it. There are terms for each game that released outside of Japan as well. You can find them on the wiki page.
Megamigender is a gamegender in which one’s gender is strongly connected to one or more of the Megami Tensei games. This can include the Persona series, the Shin Megami Tensei series, the Devil Summoner series, etc. Someone who’s megamigender might feel that the games help explain their gender experience. Alternatively, they might find that playing said games has an impact on their gender in some way. For example, one might primarily identify as agender, but become trigender when playing Persona 5. This can potentially be a neurogender; however, the term isn’t exclusive.

Demikids Light/Dark were actually pretty good games tbh and pretty different depending on which version you got. Dark was the “hard mode” of the two and followed a “typical” Chaos route while Light was easier and is the Law path.
