!!! [repost of old information that were in my banned account. But in this post, I brought more] !!! + more info + a short opinion article by me
Victims of Charleston Shooting
- Background information on the victims
Reverend Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, 45, was a pastor at the church and also an athletic coach at a high school.
Reverend Daniel Simmons Sr., 74, was the only victim to die in the hospital. He was a retired pastor of another Charleston church, according to ABC News.
Reverend Clementa Pinckney, 41, was a South Carolina state senator and pastor of Emanuel Church.
Cynthia Hurd, 54, was manager of the St. Andrews Regional Library, a library near the church.
Susie Jackson, 87, was Ethel Lance's cousin and had attended Emanuel Church for decades.
Ethel Lance, 70, had worked at the church for 30 years, according to a relative who spoke to the Post and Courier.
Myra Thompson, 59, was an active member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority at Howard University, according to the Greenville News. She was the wife of Reverend Anthony Thompson of Holy Trinity REC Church in Charleston.
Tywanza Sanders, the youngest victim, was 26 and a 2014 graduate of Charleston's Allen University.
Depayne Middleton Doctor was 49, a counselor at Southern Wesleyan University's Charleston campus and sang in the church choir
- A Report in Honor of the Victims
- Mural in honor of the nine victims of the shooting
Wednesday, Charleston Mayor Joe Riley was joined by Sen. Marlon Kimpson and Rep. Wendell Gilliard, painting the mural's first batch, followed by the release of nine live doves, one in honor of each victim killed in the shooting.
"The city has been through so much lately," Silverman said. "This wall has been crying out for transformation."
The mural project is also part of The Citadel's Leadership Day 2015, which includes 1,200 cadets offering volunteer service to more than 30 community agencies, and dozens of schools.

- An excerpt from the speech given by the then president, Obama, about the incident
“We do not know whether the killer of Rev. Pinckney and eight others knew all of this history,” the president said. “But he surely sensed the meaning of his violent act. It was an act that drew on a long history of bombs and arsons and shots fired at churches; not random, but as a means of control, a way to terrorize and oppress.”

- Funeral of the victims

- Memory of the victims

- "The Charleston Nine"

- extensive content material about the victims' life stories
- Social demonstrations in response to the massacre

- an opinion piece written by me about Charleston Victims
The massacre that took place at Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015 is a more than contemporary milestone in raising awareness not only among the American population, but worldwide, about the struggle of black people.
An attack clearly motivated by racism, the Charleston massacre resulted in the loss of 9 innocent victims, most of them elderly, who were simply worshipping God in harmony and peace.
The cowardice and inhumanity of Dylann Roof, the man responsible for the massacre, in taking the lives of people who behaved well in society and posed no threat is remarkable. With the statement that “black people are raping white women”, the shooter decided to massacre people who were against this kind of disgusting action, good Christian people, instead of black people who were really criminals. 9 defenseless people were unable to fight for their lives that night. 9 people died because they simply had too much melanin in their bodies, making them black.
Such a brutal and cowardly attack deserves to be a topic of discussion and debate about racism and racially motivated crimes, which take the victim out of so many innocent people. It's up to us to remember the victims, to remember their names. It is up to us, who have the discernment to understand that black people are no different from us, to teach those whose minds are numbed by misconceptions.
Dylann Roof's hatred was not as great as all the love and mass mobilization in homage to the dead of Charleston. We will remember them forever. We will remember their legacies. We will remember that they were innocent. We will remember their names

Reference Reviews - #1
Chopsticks in the Land of Cotton: Lives of Mississippi Delta Chinese Grocers by John Jung

[ID: a photograph of the book on a blue blanket. More details in alt. End ID.]
I really love buying and reading non-fiction books to learn about the world. Recently, I've been buying a lot of books I think can teach me things I can use in fics. In one part to encourage me to read them faster, and in another part to share these books with others who may be interested in the same topics, I've decided to write reviews of each one once I finish them.
My overall rating: 5/5 stars. An engaging and informative read that is easy to understand.
This book covers a piece of American history I never knew about and was fascinated to experience through the words of those who lived it. Covering from the 1870s to the early 2000s, it follows the lives of Chinese immigrants from Guangdong, China, who settled in the Mississippi Delta. The Delta is an area of Mississippi and Arkansas that stretches over 150 miles south of Memphis, and 70 miles east-west from Greenwood to Greenville. Factual narration is intercut with interviews of the descendants of those initial immigrant workers, both those who still live in the Delta and those who have moved away from it. I enjoyed this structure: it really let me feel the struggles and victories they went through, and the economic, social, and emotional challenges they faced. Comparing the pre- and post-Jim Crow law days, as well as putting other world events into the context of this one area, showed off the nuance of each aspect it focused on. I really appreciated all the old documents and photographs displayed throughout the book.
The tales of these Chinese grocers is entirely unique to their time and area, yet they resonate with other histories around the country.

CRUCIFIED ON THE BLUE CROSS: THE STORY OF DRALVES GENE EDWARDS, DO.; PRACTICING MEDICINE WHILE BLACK AND THE RACIAL PROFILING OF PHYSICIANS OF COLOR IN AMERICA
LINDA CHEEKS MD VICTIM OF MASSIVE GOVERNMENTAL OVERREACH: A CHRONIC PAIN PATIENT Nancy Wilson writes; Thank you for exposing the lies, and greed that is killing chronic pain patients. I pray the FDA, and AMA can help save the rest of us, chronic pain patients, by getting the CDC guidelines, and laws changed. The 2016 guidelines need to be abolished, and new guidelines need to be made, with the input of chronic pain patients. REV. RONALD MYERS MD., “THE FATHER OF UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’S NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF JUNETEENTH,” PAIN PATIENT ADVOCACY WEEK Doc Myers led his last Pain Patient Advocacy Week in Washington, DC on April 23-30, 2018. He wasn’t feeling up to par when he came to Washington, but he used all the energy he had to lead the movement. Possibly because of that self-sacrifice, he did not have the reserves when he returned home, and his health deteriorated over the next few months. He is truly a martyr to the cause, and Chronic Pain Patients should lift him up forever for the support he gave. HERE: A 1985 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School and residency in Family Practice at L.S.U. Medical Center, Doc Myers was a leading national advocate for health care to the poor and disenfranchised. In 1990 he became the first ordained and commissioned medical missionary to serve in America’s poorest region, the Mississippi Delta, in the history of the African American church. Dr. Myers provided health care to the poorest Americans through clinics in Tchula, Belzoni, Yazoo City, Indianola, Greenville, and Tupelo, Mississippi. He went on missions outreach to Kenya and Israel.

Francine threatens flooding as its remnants move into the Tennessee Valley
Francine made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane south of Morgan City, Louisiana, on Wednesday afternoon and began to weaken after reaching shore.
A weakening Francine still has the potential to bring widespread rainfall, gusty winds, and even a slight tornado threat as far north as the mid-Mississippi Valley. The storm’s moisture will gradually move northward across the South through the end of the week.
Francine made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane south of Morgan City, Louisiana, on Wednesday afternoon and began to weaken afterward.
Weather Forecast For 77064-Houston-TX:
https://www.behance.net/gallery/201999131/Weather-Forecast-For-77064-Houston-TX
While the storm's center of circulation is expected to move well inland, its impacts could extend hundreds of miles outward.
Weather alerts related to Francine, including wind advisories, flood watches, and other hazardous weather warnings, have been issued as far north as southern Missouri and as far east as Tennessee as the remnants of the tropical cyclone progress through the South.
The primary concern is that heavy rainfall could weaken tree roots and lead to fallen trees, even though the tropical cyclone has significantly weakened.
Jamie Rhome, deputy director of the National Hurricane Center, said, "What worries me about this situation is that saturated soils can make trees more susceptible to falling from wind when the hurricane’s core moves ashore, increasing the risk of power outages."
Millions of people from the Gulf Coast to the mid-Mississippi Valley are under wind advisories, with gusts potentially reaching at least 40 mph over the next 48 hours.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in 29617 - Greenville SC:
How much rain is expected?
As the tropical cyclone moves generally northward, widespread rainfall of 2-5 inches is expected through early the weekend.
Communities in the heavy rainfall zone include Greenwood, Mississippi; Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Memphis, Tennessee; and Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Although the intrusion of dry air and already dry soil reduce the likelihood of widespread flooding, localized flooding may occur where rain bands stall or repeatedly move over the same area, particularly in poorly-drained regions.
The combination of wind shear, increasing dry air, and rain bands moving through the Southeast could lead to the formation of funnel clouds and brief tornadoes through at least Friday.
Several Louisiana parishes were under Tornado Warnings on Wednesday before Francine made landfall, but no tornadoes have been reported so far.
While some tropical storms and hurricanes that make landfall along the Gulf Coast are known for generating tornadoes, Francine has not yet shown signs of producing such activity.

Francine might actually bring some relief to areas grappling with increasing drought conditions from the Gulf Coast to the southern Ohio Valley. The expected 2 to 5 inches of rainfall could help alleviate drought levels that have ranged from "abnormally dry" to even "extreme," according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor.
Similar to how heavy rains can bring relief to drought-stricken parts of central Vietnam, the much-needed precipitation from Francine could reduce water shortages in the region. Drought has also contributed to low water levels along portions of the Mississippi River, a key route for transporting goods by barge.
Although water levels remain within the acceptable range, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has noted that if the low levels persist, the weight of products transported could be limited, much like how drought conditions in the Mekong Delta affect transport along the river's channels.
youtube
A river gauge north of St. Louis recorded a water level of just 3 feet, a decrease of 6 feet over the past month and more than 10 feet below the typical level for this time of year.
Despite the impacts of the remnants of Beryl and early-summer flooding on the valley, water levels have generally remained below their average stage.

Lights, Camera, Bones by Carolyn Haines
Lights, Camera, Bones
Sarah Booth Delaney Mystery Book 27
Carolyn Haines Minotaur Pub
May 21st, 2024
Lights, Camera, Bones by Carolyn Haines is another installment in the Sarah Booth Delaney Mysteries. Murder, kidnappings, a shark named Betty, and downright rotten people keep this book moving along at a good clip.
“I have always been fascinated by the story of the 1927 Greenville Mississippi flood. My grandmother was the County Historian and she had talked about and painted visit pictures of the flood, about people stuck and having to be rescued. This captured my imagination. I have been going to the Delta area for a long time, doing book signings. The history of Greenville has been interesting, a real boom town for a long time. People might think that having a shark in the story is unrealistic, but I read a true story about this bull shark that swam up the Mississippi River. This was the inspiration for the book. I set my books in the South because that is the area I know and love.”
The main character is Sarah Booth who owns the Delaney Detective Agency. She is ably assisted in her investigations by her partner Tinkie, Coleman Peters who is her love interest and the sheriff of Sunflower County, a ghost named Jitty, and her animal companions. Sarah is very nonsense, and she was very adept at solving mysteries. Her partner, Tinkie, was a Southern Belle who is a bit sassy. There are two protagonists who become people of interest.
“Mary Doyle is sharp, funny, high-handed, and sarcastic with a sense of humor. She feels guilty over once losing her assistant to a shark when she was a former marine biologist but has redeeming qualities because she is now a book seller. The other person, Bilbo is manipulative, arrogant, a political animal, and a narcissist.”
Delaney Detective Agency gets a taste of the spotlight when they are called to a case on a movie set in Greenville, MS, right on the Mississippi River. Marlon Brandon, heir to a wealthy and influential political family, has brought a film crew to town to film a drama about the 1927 flood that submerged a great deal of Greenville. He is a local man that is starring in the movie and has written the screenplay. Marlon wants the world to know the story of the flood―and the heroic role the Brandon ancestors played in rescuing dozens of residents from drowning.
But from the start there are a lot of people who don’t want this story told. And his own grandfather seems to be on the fence about it. Their protest was allegedly tied to people be stranded intentionally to keep workers from leaving during the flood.
“I based Marlon Brandon on Marlon Brando, the actor. I am always interested in movies and stories that entertain and educate. Because Greenville has been in such an economic slump, I thought how a movie would bring income to town. I wish someone would film a movie there.” When one of the casts ends up dead in the river, they also find a shark swimming around in there. And when Marlon goes missing as well, Sarah and Tinkie are going to go all in to find him and remove the shark to another location. Unfortunately, this could get them in a lot of trouble and possibly could get them dead!
“I called sharks killing machines. They always must swim forward. Bull sharks are an aggressive species. They eat what they can bite.”
The plot is very interesting. It delves into old money and the power that goes with it, murky family histories, and issues of racism as the plot progresses, readers learn bits of history, as well as how someone’s relationship with their family impacts current life. There are also bits of information regarding sharks.

2024-04-23: Greenville (Town)
The port city of Greenville is located in Washington county and is its county seat. It was ravaged by the levee breaks in the flood of 1927 and is mostly back on solid footing but there are still signs of rebuilding in the area. As of the 1930 census, there were almost 15,000 people living there.
Point of Interest
Little Italy
In the southern portion of Greenville is an enclave with a thriving Italian population. Many Italians came to the Delta to work on farms, and would unfortunately arrive in debt because the plantation owners would pay for the transportation costs of relocating immigrants to the Delta. Despite this unfair and exploitative system, many Italians managed to save up enough money to repay their debt and buy their own land and establish businesses. Restaurants and grocery stores are a major fixture of Little Italy.
Radio Station WKFI
This is a AM radio station that was originally licensed under the Federal Radio Commission and stopped officially broadcasting in 1934. Little is known about this radio station, but broadcasts are still going out at irregular intervals. The station is presumably locked up and unoccupied, but people are continuing to report hearing the station's call sign and unexplained sounds when tuned into the old station's band. The Federal Radio Commission has been investigating, but no findings have been released. Men in suits from Washington say that there's nothing to be alarmed about.
Weekly Democrat-Times Newspaper Building
Greenville's current newspaper has been in its current incarnation since 1917, though it's existed in slightly different names and publishing cadences all the way back to 1868 with the Democrat Times. It's the largest newspaper in the area and has the most resources for journalism, but it's effectively a whites-only newspaper. The Newshawks at the Mound Bayou Demonstrator are often in the area getting news from the Pullman Porters to bring news from up North to the Blacks still living in the Jim Crow south.

The February 9th to 11th 1994 Ice Storm: 30 Year Anniversary
Image from: https://www.actionnews5.com/2019/02/11/breakdown-looking-back-ice-storm-feb/
Here is the surprise I have been working on for the last several weeks. This might be coming out a little late, but that has never hurt anything anyways. February 9th to February 11th marked the 30 year anniversary of the infamous 1994 Ice Storm that hit the region. I hope that everyone enjoys the blog and learns a little something about this event.
Introduction
The February 9th to 11th, 1994 Ice Storm will be always be consider one of the worst storms to ever impact North Mississippi, Arkansas, southwestern Tennessee and portions of Louisiana and northwestern Alabama. Widespread freezing rain accumulations of 2 to 6 inches had stretched from southern Arkansas and northern Louisiana into North Mississippi and eventually into Tennessee and northwestern Alabama. Due to the historic nature of this storm, I wanted to dive into the meteorological data from this event.
Synoptic Overview of the Event
Before the storm, there was a stationary front stretching from southern Plains in Texas, into the Lower Ohio River Valley. Just to the south of that boundary, temperatures across the region were in the low to mid 70s across a large portion of Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and even into northwestern Alabama. Towards Canada, there is an arctic High that was pushing the colder temperatures into the Central Plains and the upper Ohio River Valley, which eventually made its way into the Southeast.
By 12z on February 10th, 1994, temperatures across the entire region had dropped to the mid 20s to the lower 30s within a 24 hour period as the stationary boundary had transition into a cold front causing the drastic drop in temperatures. By this time, the damage had been done as several places across Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Northwest Alabama had seen several inches of freezing rain. For those who did not see freezing rain, had to deal with flooding across the area where 5 to 7 inches of rain were reported.
Sounding Analysis for Little Rock and Memphis
The first set of soundings show the drastic the temperature drop as the cold front had moved through the region on February 9th. The red line is the freezing mark for water at 32 F or 0 C. This was common across a large portion of the area.
By 00z on February 10th, temperatures had fallen to below freezing and at this time. several places had ethier started or have been seeing freezing rain across the area. The freezing rain accumulation had continued for several hours after the fact at this point.
Image provided by the NOAA/ESRL Physical Sciences Laboratory, Boulder Colorado from their Web site at https://psl.noaa.gov/.
For comparison, this is the reanalysis sounding over Memphis, TN at 06z on February 10th, 1994 with the red line representing the freezing mark. Memphis, TN does not have an upper site like Little Rock or Jackson, MS, so a reanalysis can be use to provide what the atmosphere would have looked like given the meteorological conditions.
Estimated Precipitation Totals
As for the freezing rain totals, I was unable to get exact storm reports from this event. However, I was able to find estimated precipitation totals from the event. Given that freezing rain is measured very similar to rain, a 1:1 ration can be applied. This means for 1 inch of freezing rain, it is equal to 1 inch of rain. The black line is approximately where the separation of rain and freezing rain had occurred at between February 9th 12z to February 12th at 12z in 1994. Places north of the black line experienced freezing rain whereas places south of the line experienced heavy rainfall and possible flooding.

Several places in the Arkansas/Mississippi Delta had saw 3 to 5 inches of freezing rain, with some spots seeing closer to 6 inches. Across southern Tennessee, including the Memphis area, freezing rain accumulations of 2 to 3 inches were commonly seen or even reported for this event. Even in Alabama, several places in northwestern portion of the state saw 3 to 5 inches of freezing rain, if not more. For those who did not experience the Ice Storm of 1994, they did have to contend with flooding and heavy rainfall of upwards to 5 to 7 inches. Images, like the one above, were very common across the region.
