(January 27, 1989, The New York Times)
(CW: racism, capitalism)
When I visited Thailand for the first time a few years before this article was published, "Darkie"-brand toothpaste was everywhere. And that example of racist branding was not unique in SE and East Asia at the time.
I was reminded of this in reading the opening of Burgers in Blackface - Anti-Black Restaurants Then and Now by Naa Oyo A. Kwate "'Slaves were auctioned off the week of February 21, during noon. The student body bid . . . with the highest bidder getting the person for their slave on the assigned day . . . This was the 2nd year the student council held this money raiser, which made over 1,000 dollars this year.' So read the 1978 yearbook feature describing 'Sambo Service Day' at St. John’s High School, Delphos, Ohio. Photo captions identified images of grinning White students who had 'won' one of their peers, and others who were consigned to servitude. One of the latter group had adorned his shirt with masking tape that read, ‘Ain’t I Cute?' The story text noted that 'wearing signs is one way masters let people know who their slave is.' Making a mockery of slavery was apparently a new annual event at the parochial school, one in which the word 'Sambo' stood for African Americans.
On the opposite end of the country, in Modesto, California, another all-White student body engaged in the same ritual. Fall at Modesto High School meant the 'traditional Slave Day.' In 1979, 'each Rally Exec was assigned to a varsity football player, and served as his slave for the day.' Where the Modesto celebration of slavery differed from that in Ohio was in an external connection to Sambo. The teens at St. John’s merely named their event 'Sambo Service Day,' but in Modesto, each 'slave' took her 'master' to breakfast at Sambo’s Restaurant, a West Coast pancake chain. Had these students deliberately chosen Sambo’s as the setting for breakfast because the name and the chain’s branding was ideally matched to an enactment of enslaved Black persons? As will be shown in the pages that follow, Sambo’s Restaurant, which initially launched in California in 1957, was but one of several establishments where racism was integral to the dining concept."
The Wikipedia article on Sambo's yields this quote, which has a familiar ring, as it discusses why the owners of the Sambo's chain decided to revert from "The Jolly Tiger," its alternative to "Sambo's" in certain communities:
"The company cited poor financial performance of these restaurants; the company's 'constitutional, legal, and moral right to operate (those restaurants) under its corporate name'; and the assertion that Black people did not object to the name, citing studies that showed that 'three times as many blacks (sic) ate at Sambo's as at any other full service restaurant.'
Shades of the NFL team's "Native Americans totes do not find 'Redskins' offensive as a team name—look, we found a couple, and they're cool with it!"
In sum, racism and business are the most congenial of bedfellows. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

random facts i know about ohio (that may or may not be inaccurate) because i’ve done research for glee fanfiction:
the closest city to lima is delphos and it is approximately 25 minutes away, the others are like anywhere from 35 minutes to over an hour
the easton town center, a mall in columbus, has been named the #1 retail experience several times in recent years (it’s also beautiful and definitely work looking at photos of because holy crap)
lima has one main high school and westerville has three main ones
ohio state university has a well praised hospital (which makes sense, but good to know)
there is nothing even remotely close to a gay bar in west lima
there are however a few coffee shops there and they’re a pretty short drive from lima’s main high school
there is also one coffee shop called our town roast about three minutes (ten by foot) away from the high school
westerville and lima actually have pretty similar population sizes (though obviously different incomes)
as of 2021, westerville’s median household income is over 2.5x lima’s ($96,279 vs $37,668)

Convenience One-Room Schoolhouse
US 35 and Camp Grove Rd
Good Hope, OH
Convenience is a community on US 35 at the intersection of Camp Grove Rd. in Wayne Township, Fayette County, Ohio. Convenience was on the Toledo, Delphos, & Burlington Railroad (later the Cincinnati, Hamilton, & Dayton Railroad). Its original proprietors were Noah Hukill (1805 – 1887) from Ohio County, West Virginia (formerly in Virginia) and Susan (Smith) Hukill (1801 – 1877) from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They got married in Fayette County in 1831, had 5 children, and ran a stagecoach stop tavern and inn prior to the arrival of the railroad in the area. The school land was donated by War of 1812 veteran James Bryant (1787 – 1848) from Virginia and Catharine (Eyeman) Bryant (1792 – 1869) around 1844. German Baptist church services were held in the school until a wood frame church was constructed in the southwest corner of the intersection in 1853 – 1854. The church has since been lost to time, but the town’s last one-room schoolhouse in the northwest corner of the intersection appears to be in decent preserved condition for its age.
A son of Noah and Susan, William R. Hukill (1834 – 1904) and his wife Mary (Kelso) Hukill 1836 – 1909), took on proprietorship of the town in the mid to late 1800s. They got married in 1858 and had 3 children. War of 1812 veteran and county pioneer John H. DeWitt (1785 – 1855) from Clark County, Kentucky was the first postmaster. William was appointed to the postmaster position after John passed away. He also served as justice of the peace and the train station attendant. The post office was discontinued from the late 1860s to mid-1880s, and William again held the postmaster position until the office was discontinued. The train tracks ran through the northern side of town and its former bed is now part of the Paint Creek Recreational Trail, a 35-mile paved path running from Washington Court House to Chillicothe in Ross County.

1946
For decades after the 1866 eruption, T CrB was observed to glow at around 10th magnitude, yet with chaotic variability of around 0.5 magnitude or so. The most persistent of the star's observers was Leslie Peltier. He started monitoring T CrB in 1920 from his home in Delphos, Ohio, convinced that the star would erupt again. This was insightful, as the concept of a recurrent nova was unknown at the time. In his book Starlight Nights, Peltier says, "For more than twenty- five years I looked in on it from night to night as it tossed and turned in fitful slumber." In 1945, Peltier observed that the star was suddenly fading fast (what we now call the pre-eruption dip) and had the insight that this activity marked an imminent outburst. "Then, one night in February 1946 it stirred, slowly opened its eyes, then quickly threw aside the draperies of its couch and rose! And where was I, its self-appointed guardian on that once-in-a-lifetime night when it awoke? I was asleep! Self-pity comes easy at 2:30 on a cold February morning so I went back to my warm bed with the comforting thought that I owed it to my family, at least, to take care of my health." The pride of discovery instead went to N. F. H. Knight, a veteran English variable-star observer. Peltier continued, "I still have the feeling that T could have shown me more consideration. We had been friends for many years; on thousands of nights l had watched over it as it slept and then, it arose in my hour of weakness as l nodded at my post. I am still watching it up to 1973] but now it is with a wary eye. There is no warmth between us anymore."
