what was your first computer?
Oh I love this question - thank you for asking!! I hope that I see more questions like this around our beautiful old-techie tumblr corner!! Just for reference - I'm 24 so my computers aren't too "vintage!"
The first computer I remember looks a little like this one: I remember the huge chunky monitor and the way the button pushed in on it, and the stackable IBM pc underneath. I remember the speakers' feel and how they were always just a little dusty. And y'all KNOW I was taking out that mouse ball and gently touching and playing with it!
In fact, just another aside - sitting at this computer and playing a Blue's Clues game was my very first memory. I must have been 3 or 4.
Tumblr media
The next guy shown is what looks like the tower of my first pc - one that my dad built for me on the dining room table (which might be one of my biggest regrets - to not have had him teach and show me what he was doing at the time!). It got put into my room at the age of... 10-12? Pretty young! And boy, did I see many things on the Internet I shouldn't have lol.
Sorry I don't have too much more information about these!
Tumblr media
The next guy shown is the Lenovo g780 and it was my first laptop! I got it in the 8th grade. It was a weird brown color and it never left my bedroom, or my lap for that matter lol. It was the machine that I started obsessively using tumblr on as well!! It was almost 18 inches, so it was hard to lug around lol. I got to help revive it a couple times - replacing the fan and the screen at one point or another.
Tumblr media
Just for funzies! This is my current battlestation: the Dell G15. I personally think that Dell is super underrated in the computer market - they're known more for officeware of course, but they own Alienware! My laptop has the same hardware as the newest gaming rigs (Don't wanna brag, but I've got a G3800! in this baby!) and it wasn't nearly as expensive thankfully. I use it to program and play lots of games on the daily (although I've been using my PS5 a lot lately!!). I haven't seen seen a game that runs poorly on it... yet.
Tumblr media
And also!! Under my desk currently lies a 2002 iMac G4 - known colloquially as the Sunflower computer! It's my BFF's childhood computer - she and her family lovingly gave it to me to revive! It's one of those many ongoing projects in my life that I wish I had more time for... I need to replace the hard drive and give it a super full cleanout. The neck on the monitor is also broken and could use a repair. One interesting thing about this computer is that Apple was getting real creative with their designs around this time (which... I wish desktop design was still super innovative :'( ) and the hardware is all jammed in this weird semi-globe container? So it's unlike any other computer interior and... how exciting is that to dig around in and restore?!
Tumblr media
Thank you to anyone that's read through all of this!

Words Written: 2,082 words Projects:
Commission - Slow going. Moved it back into GDocs so I can write at work. I think the format is what's throwing me the most - it's not a style I usually work in and I am in a touch over my head. It's fully planned and otherwise moving along well.
REDO-REPEAT - Wrote this AFTG fic on a whim, chasing motivation-inspiration to get the gears oiled up. It's not everything the idea could be, but I'm happy with what it is given why I wrote it. Not everything needs to be perfect lol. You can read it here, but do mind the tags.
Original Work - Haven't spent much time on my original work, although I do have an idea percolating in the back of my head that I should probably rough out soon. I have a couple other shorts that need to be re-drafted, but I think I need more space from them before I get going again.
Notes:
Wasn't feeling great this week for a variety of reasons. I'm trying to catch back up on life after my second ever kidney infection (caught it early enough this time that my suffering was significantly easier to deal with), not to mention worrying and checking in on Winnie daily now that she's due to foal any day now. (Most likely she has a week or two left. However, sometimes they progress very quickly, so it's prudent to be watchful.) There are other things going on beyond that, of course, but suffice it to say I've been overwhelmed and that is not conducive to writing for me.
Have been consistently frustrated that I don't have a good "writing nook", which has been doubly frustrating because I have several places from which to work, but none of them have been facilitating Getting Things Done. This is a problem for writing but it's equally troubling on my WFH days. Lately I've been most productive in bed. I do not like this, as my bed is supposed to be for sleeping only. Have been looking into purchasing a used chair/ottoman for writing purposes, but there are a lot of logistics to consider there.
In a similar note to the above, I'm irritated by the size of my MacBook. It's a 13", which I ordered during the pandemic and decided it was "good enough" upon realizing it was smaller than expected. I no longer think this, as the keyboard is cramped and the screen doesn't have as much space as I'd like. I've considered going back to my old 17" Dell, which I wrote on prior to purchasing this laptop, but that laptop has fallen victim to planned obsolescence and is unable to receive the updates it needs to function at the level I require. I've looked into larger MacBooks (for budgeting purposes, mostly, although I wonder if I could trade-in my old laptops and have enough store credit for a used one?) but so far as I can tell the keyboard does NOT scale, which is irritating, as I'd prefer one with slightly larger keys so I stop stumbling over how close everything is. The other option is go back to Windows, but this is problematic as I very much prefer the iCloud files syncing to access my WIPs from my phone. Basically: no good solutions. I'll have to keep looking, which is fine, because I don't have the budget to get anything yet.
Not sure how to tie this in, as I suspect it's related to most, if not all, of my whining, but I've been noticing yet again that I have more "luck" writing analog than I do when I'm working on my phone or laptop. That makes it harder to track what I've written, but it's functional, and has gotten me through several sticking points.
Not sure what I'm going to work on after this commission is complete. I think, tentatively, that I might finish a JereJean PWP that has been on the backburner for a while, then finish roughing out my ex-mixtape fic (I got sick and ran out of time, so dropped the event) before polishing it for posting. After that, I want to revisit Vestigial, which has been shelved for a while. I'm hoping that if I get back in the groove of finishing stories, I'll be in a better headspace to get back to my original work, but we'll see. Nothing's set in stone just yet, and my writing stamina isn't high enough yet that I can just bust through any of these without long term repercussions. Slow and steady is key for a bit.

Hey, this is a longshot—but d’you have a link to that “how to remove bloatware on Windows/what bloatware to remove” post?
I’m asking because a friend sent me a link to that one about pc specs you reblogged a while back, and I could’ve sworn I saw the bloatware one in the recommended posts for that one, but I forgot to like the post and now I can’t find it. I finally picked up a windows laptop and need to know what to disable.
So it sounds like you're referring to a post I reblogged from @ms-demeanor but I cannot seem to find it. But tumblr search and even the option of using duckduckgo to search tumblr for me is letting me down. Though the PC Specs post might be this one? https://ms-demeanor.tumblr.com/post/726025900027789312/so-the-counter-to-this-is-that-ssds-are-static
I may poke around a bit more later to see if I can find the post but for now... I can list off some of what I did based on my own recent experiences of setting up a new laptop after my old one decided to start blue screening if I moved it five inches in any direction. (That old laptop is now doing perfectly fine when left completely stationary, so I've been using it to experiment with creating a local file sync for back ups using some old hard drives i had lying around.)
Bloatware Social Media/Video Media Apps:
These are probably pretty obvious bloatware since this is a computer and all these services are therefor going to a.) work on the browser and b.) work better on the browser than the app anyway. Also there are a few cases like Facebook where there's a c.) why would I touch <insert application> with a ten foot pole anyway? reason for removing the App
Instagram
Facebook
Netflix
Prime Video
News - Microsoft news aggregation App (there are better options out there than this for news aggregation)
TikTok
Spotify - depends on your spotify usage tbh, but I don't use it since I just dumped all my music onto my local plex server and use that to play music all over the house
Twitter - Or X, whatever
Additionally:
Any preloaded game you don't find interesting. Depending on the vendor there could be a lot of games or no games.
X-Box gaming apps - while there are some reasons to keep the x-box gaming stuff, most people are gonna find it useless
WildTangent Games
Omen gaming - if you've got an HP laptop specifically, you will probably want to give Omen related game apps the boot too
Vendor specific applications - YMMV, I do keep some of these for diagnostic purposes, but you definitely want to at least give any HP this or Dell that or whatever type programs a harder look. Any program starting with the name of the vendor that created your laptop? At the very least look it up to see how important it really is/isn't
Adobe programs - there are free versions of everything adobe does that do it better than adobe does
3D Viewer - it's a 3D modeling program, but odds are you won't need/want this
Microsoft 365/Office/etc - Unless you need these programs specifically for professional reasons, LibreOffice is free and reliable and has multiple UI modes for the toolbars depending on your preferences
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft ToDo
Microsoft Family
Microsoft Maps
Mixed Reality Portal - Unless you're doing VR dev/VR gaming using this computer, there's no real reason to keep this one
Microsoft Whiteboard
Microsoft People
Sound Recorder - YMMV, this is useful for recording lectures and the like, but I prefer freeware like Audacity which is more reliable/just works better
Sticky Notes
Weather
Cortana
Amazon Alexa
I'll usually keep Edge around as a backup browser, but Firefox is definitely the best browser out there right now.

Honestly ty for the recs, I also wanna stay within the Samsung family and apple products are waayyyy out of my budget rn.
The aesthetic of it is also a plus. Hopefully I'll be able to get it before school starts for me. Tryna be all kinds of prepared for this year. Mind you I'm just able to find a decently priced laptop sleeve cuz all the ones I've seen in store start at like 30 bucks
- 📝 (notes anon since we're talking abt school n stationary I think its appropriate lol)
yww love ! nothing on apple products but i just like samsung better and plus i dont feel like switching over all my info from google to icould ! i don't think im gonna get mine until my birthday in sep 😞 i like it bc it's really nice and small so it's easier to stuff into a bag but it also does split screen and you can take pictures off of google and paste them into your notes or even trace them in ! AS A NURSING MAJOR!!?!?!? IMMA NEED THAT !
speaking of laptop sleeves and stuff, i wanna start looking for my accessories for my own laptop (maybe amazon or even temu 💀) ! i personally really like hp and dell bc their touch screen and they're compatible with microsoft's app (for school) ! i would take notes on my laptop but it's super uncomfortable and the notes app isn't compatible with it
sidenote: need a new bag for school 🤧 sick of crossbodies and backpacks, need me a cute lil shoulder bag !

I’m sorry if someone already asked this, but which laptop do you have?? I’m browsing around for a decent 2-in-1
Hi, don't be sorry! This is the first ask I've ever gotten, so it's kinda exciting loll. My laptop is the 14-inch 2021 Macbook Pro, and I also use the iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) and Apple Pencil (2nd generation) for note-taking. They're good, but they're not actually 2-in-1s. Depending on your intended use, though, the iPad might be able to act as a 2-in-1 laptop for you. They can do almost everything that a laptop can if you buy a keyboard to go along with it. The only tricky thing is if you need to run special software for your classes because they might not be available on the iPad.
The laptop that I almost bought instead of my Macbook and spent a lot of time researching is the Dell XPS 13. You can buy a touch-screen version of it. The reviews I've seen are fantastic, so I'd recommend looking into it. They do actually have a 2-in-1 version of the Dell XPS 13, and they have the Dell XPS 13 Plus.
Anyway, thanks for asking and good luck in picking a laptop :)

Dell Revamps XPS 15 And Brings Again XPS 17
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The XPS lineup from Dell has been a resounding success and was the first laptop to feature the ultra-thin bezels that have defined the modern laptop. For 2020, Dell is refreshing the XPS 15 with an all-new design and bringing back the XPS 17 after almost ten years. Both look to set the bar that other manufacturers will try to attain. And thanks to the thin display bezels, both laptops are much smaller than their names would imply. Dell XPS Models Model XPS 15 XPS 17 CPU Intel Core i5-10300H 4C/8T 4.5 GHz Intel Core i7-10750H 6C/12T 5.0 GHz Intel Core i7-10875H 8C/16T 5.1 GHz Intel Core i9-10885H 8C/16T 5.3 GHz GPU NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti 4GB NVIDIA GTX 1650Ti 4GB NVIDIA RTX 2060 6GB RAM 8-64 GB DDR4-2933 (2 SO-DIMM) Storage 256 GB to 2 TB PCIe SSD Display 15.6-inch 1920x1200 60 Hz 500 nits 1650:1 contrast sRGB 3840x2400 60 Hz Touch 500 nits 1600:1 contrast HDR 400 100% Adobe RBG 94% P3 17.3-inch 1920x1200 60 Hz 500 nits 1650:1 contrast sRGB 3840x2400 60 Hz Touch 500 nits 1600:1 contrast HDR 400 100% Adobe RBG 94% P3 Audio Waves Maxx Audio Waves Nx 3D Audio Quad-Speaker 1.5W x 2 Tweeter 2.5W x 2 Woofer Ports 2 x USB-C Thunderbolt 3 1 x USB Type-C 3.1 SD Card Reader 4 x Thunderbolt 3 SD Card Slot Networking Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 Battery 56 Wh / 86 Wh USB Type-C 90W to 130W charger 56 Wh / 97 Wh USB Type-C 90W to 130W charger Dimensions 345 x 230 x 18 mm 13.57 x 9.06 x 0.71 inches 374 x 248 x 19.5 mm 14.74 x 9.76 x 0.77 inches Weight 1.83 to 2.05 kg 4 to 4.5 lbs 2.11 to 2.51 kg 4.65 to 5.53 lbs Starting Price USD $1,299.99 $1,499.99 XPS 15
Tumblr media
Dell’s XPS 15 has been the workhorse of their lineup, offering significantly more CPU and GPU performance than the XPS 13 thanks to 45-Watt CPUs and powerful discrete GPUs. Dell’s redesign adds new options for the CPU and GPU, and updates the design to their new take on the XPS, featuring the same InfinityEdge display, but now in a taller 16:10 aspect ratio which matches the already updated XPS 13. Powering the new XPS is Intel’s new Comet Lake H-Series, with a 45 Watt TDP. Dell is offering Core i5, i7, and i9 models. On the GPU side, Dell is now offering the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti 4BG model, which is in-line with how NVIDIA has revamped their mobile GPU lineup for the year. Customers will be able to add up to 64 GB of DDR4-2933 RAM as well, thanks to the two SO-DIMM slots, and storage options are all PCIe SSDs from 256 GB to 2 TB. Dell is also adding a brand-new cooling system, with a vapor-chamber cooling system and increased airflow. Any additional cooling will be welcome in a system that is as thin and light as the XPS line is. One of the hallmarks of the XPS lineup is the InfinityEdge display, and for 2020’s redesign Dell has created a laptop with a 92.9% screen-to-body ratio, while still managing to fit a 720p webcam and dual microphones in the top bezel. Display options on the XPS 15 are familiar, but thanks to the 16:10 aspect ratio, should be more usable for creating and working. The base display option is a 1920x1200 100% sRGB IPS panel with a 1650:1 contrast ratio and 500 nits of brightness. If you need more, Dell also offers a 3840x2400 touch display with HDR 400, 100% Adobe RGB gamut coverage, and 94% P3 Gamut.
Tumblr media
Battery life estimates from Dell are somewhat insane. The optional 86 Wh battery can provide up to 25 hours of battery life with the lower resolution display, which should mean even the UHD display option should offer all-day battery life. Dell has also added 3D sound with Waves Nx 3D Audio, with tuned speakers, or Waves NX headphone tracking to adjust the direction of sound to suit your head movement. Dell has moved entirely to USB-C for this generation, with two Thunderbolt 3 ports and one USB only, and Dell includes several USB-C adapters. The new XPS 15 starts at $1299.99 and availability will be this week. XPS 17
Tumblr media
After almost ten years away, Dell is bringing back the XPS 17, thanks to customer demand for larger displays. But thanks to the InfinityEdge display, the new XPS 17 is very compact, with Dell stating it is smaller than 48% of the 15-inch notebooks on the market today. Thin bezel designs look amazing, but the ability to pack a large screen into a much smaller chassis is one of the best reasons to opt for a notebook like this. The new XPS 17 is also Dell’s most powerful XPS ever, with the same CPU choices as the XPS 15, being Intel Comet Lake H Core i5, i7, and i9 models, but with an even larger GPU option. The XPS 17 ships with the same NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti as the XPS 15 in its base trim, but customers can also opt for the much more powerful NVIDIA RTX 2060 if they need even more compute. There are two SO-DIMM slots for up to 64 GB of RAM, and customers can purchase up to 2 TB of PCIe storage when configuring the device. On the display side, the new XPS 17 features the same 16:10 aspect ratio as the rest of the XPS lineup, with base trim offering a 1920x1200 60 Hz display with 500 nits of brightness and 1650:1 contrast for it’s sRGB gamut. Or, like the XPS 15, you can opt for a high DPI panel, with a 3840x2400 resolution and touch. The higher pixel count also includes HDR 400 certification and wide-color gamut support with 100% Adobe RGB and 94% P3.
Tumblr media
The larger laptop gets an even larger battery, with either 56 Wh or 97 Wh options. Dell has also added more Thunderbolt 3, with four Thunderbolt 3 ports. The new XPS 17 looks to be a worthy addition to the lineup. It will be available this summer, with prices starting at $1499.99. Source: Dell Tweet PRINT THIS ARTICLE Read the full article

AND I'M SICK
tested negative for covid. but it was a shitty at-home rapid test, so who truly knows. also negative rapid strep test, but i don't have the culture samples back for the strep test.
headaches, joint aches, heart pounding, fever, and throat is in the worst pain i have EVER felt in my life. like, i have been sick with the flu and cold a few times throughout my life, but this is by far the worst sore throat i have ever felt. i didn't even know it could get this bad. didn't even know it was an option.
mom has stocked me up: orange jay, MANY soups (so much soup, omg), throat coat tea, chloraseptic spray, and throat numbing lozenges. i sincerely regret not asking for flonase, because all i have on-hand is afrin, and i know that will only make things worse in the end by creating a rebound effect.
she also... got me a laptop? i was chatting the other day about how the new replacement charger for my laptop has grounding issues that cause feedback interference when using the trackpad and touch screen, and dell doesn't currently have any of their branded charges in stock. so she helped me try to find a non-knock off for awhile, which didn't work since the knock-offs look exactly like the actual charger. so she just ended with "well, i bought... something. let me know if it works."
and i was like "pls don't waste your money, i'm like 99% most of these chargers are knock-offs."
and then a whole ass laptop shows up the next day.
BRUH
i felt so bad, but i had to ask her to send it back, since my processor and graphics card are better in my laptop. i just- don't have a use for a new laptop that's not even better than my current.
so instead... she bought me a PHONE.
BRO???
genuinely don't know where/when to expect stuff like this. i mean, just last month i asked if my mom could buy me a package of pads (like $8) when she was going out to the store. she said no and told me to wear my period underwear (i only have 2). but i didn't press any further than that. i don't like to beg or ask for stuff or cause problems. i feel like i cause enough problems.
but then she'll randomly buy me stuff that i don't want/ask for? and now that i'm sick, she's buying me an overabundance of care products.
no idea. i get uncomfortable asking for stuff, but i get uncomfortable saying no to random gifts. i just don't get these weird...gift surges.

How to Fix a Cracked Dell Laptop Screen: A Comprehensive Guide
How to Fix a Cracked Dell Laptop Screen: A Comprehensive Guide
A cracked laptop screen is a common issue that can disrupt your workflow and make your laptop less enjoyable to use. If you have a Dell laptop with a cracked screen, you might be considering professional repair services or even thinking about replacing the entire laptop. However, with the right tools and a bit of patience, you can fix the screen yourself. This detailed guide will walk you through the process of repairing a cracked Dell laptop screen, covering everything from diagnosing the problem to replacing the screen and troubleshooting any issues.
Understanding the Problem
Identifying the Crack
Before you start the repair process, it's crucial to assess the extent of the damage. A cracked screen can range from minor surface cracks that don’t affect the display to severe damage where the screen is completely shattered. Here are some common types of screen damage:
Hairline Cracks: Thin, small cracks that might not affect the functionality of the screen but can spread over time.
Spiderweb Cracks: Cracks that spread out in a web-like pattern, often affecting the display and touch functionality.
Shattered Screen: A screen with multiple cracks or broken glass that makes it difficult to view or use the laptop.
Determining If Replacement is Necessary
If your screen is only slightly cracked and still functional, you might consider using it until it worsens or until a more convenient time to repair it. However, if the crack is severe or the screen is unusable, replacing the screen is necessary.
Tools and Materials Needed
Essential Tools
Replacement Screen: Ensure you purchase a screen compatible with your Dell laptop model. Verify the part number and model specifications to avoid compatibility issues.
Precision Screwdrivers: You’ll need a set of small screwdrivers to remove the screws holding the screen and bezel in place.
Plastic Pry Tools: These tools are used to carefully open the bezel without causing damage to the laptop.
Anti-Static Wrist Strap: This prevents static electricity from damaging sensitive electronic components.
Small Container: To keep screws and small parts organized.
Optional Tools
Tweezers: For handling small connectors and screws.
Cleaning Cloth: For cleaning the screen and laptop components before reassembly.
Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing a Cracked Dell Laptop Screen
1. Power Down and Unplug Your Laptop
Shut Down Your Laptop: Make sure your laptop is completely powered off.
Disconnect All Cables: Unplug any external devices or cables connected to the laptop.
Remove the Battery: If your Dell laptop allows for battery removal, take it out to prevent accidental power-on during the repair process.
2. Remove the Bezel
Locate Screws: Check the bezel for any screws. These may be hidden under rubber pads or stickers. Use a precision screwdriver to remove these screws.
Use Plastic Pry Tools: Gently insert a plastic pry tool between the bezel and the laptop’s screen frame. Work your way around the bezel to detach it from the screen. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as this could damage the bezel or the screen.
3. Remove the Cracked Screen
Unfasten Screen Mounting Screws: With the bezel removed, you’ll see the screen mounted to the laptop with screws. Carefully remove these screws using your precision screwdriver.
Disconnect the Video Cable: Tilt the screen forward to access the video cable attached to the back of the screen. Gently disconnect this cable by pulling it out or lifting a small tab, depending on the connector type.
4. Install the New Screen
Connect the New Screen: Attach the video cable to the new replacement screen. Ensure that the connection is secure to avoid display issues.
Secure the New Screen: Position the new screen in the laptop’s frame and align it with the mounting holes. Use the screws you removed earlier to secure the screen in place.
5. Reattach the Bezel
Position the Bezel: Carefully align the bezel with the screen and snap it back into place. Make sure it fits snugly and evenly around the screen.
Replace Screws: Reinsert any screws that were previously removed and cover any rubber pads or stickers.
6. Test the New Screen
Power On the Laptop: Turn on your laptop to test the new screen. Check for display clarity, color accuracy, and functionality.
Check Touch Functionality: If your laptop screen is a touch screen, test the touch functionality to ensure it is working correctly.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Screen Not Turning On
If the new screen doesn’t turn on, it could be due to a loose video cable connection or an issue with the screen itself. Double-check that the video cable is securely connected to both the screen and the laptop’s motherboard.
Flickering or Distorted Display
If you experience flickering or distortion, ensure that the screen is properly seated and that all connections are secure. Sometimes, adjusting the screen's resolution or updating graphics drivers can help resolve display issues.
Dead Pixels or Color Issues
Dead pixels or color issues can occur if the replacement screen is defective. If the screen has persistent dead pixels or color problems, consider testing another replacement screen to confirm if the issue is with the screen or another component.
When to Seek Professional Help
While replacing a cracked screen yourself can be cost-effective, it’s not always the best option for everyone. Consider seeking professional help if:
You’re Uncomfortable with the Process: If you’re not confident in your technical skills, professional repair services can ensure the job is done correctly.
You Encounter Complications: If you experience issues that you cannot resolve, such as difficulties with connections or other hardware problems, a professional technician can provide expert assistance.
Your Laptop is Under Warranty: Replacing the screen yourself may void your laptop’s warranty. Check your warranty terms before proceeding with a DIY repair.
Conclusion
Repairing a cracked Dell laptop screen yourself is a feasible project for those with the right tools and a bit of technical know-how. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can replace a damaged screen and restore your laptop to its full functionality. Remember to assess the extent of the damage, use compatible replacement parts, and follow the steps carefully to avoid causing additional issues.
While a DIY screen replacement can save you money, it’s important to consider your comfort level with electronics and the potential risks involved. If you encounter any difficulties or if the repair process seems too complex, seeking professional help might be the best option. Whether you choose to tackle the repair yourself or enlist the help of a professional, addressing a cracked screen promptly will ensure that your laptop continues to serve you well.
