i think a lot about the fact that no matter how much donnie heals, grows, gets comfortable bickering and presenting things and asking for things and being competitive again, there is one thing that they will never see from him again and that is earnest, innocent excitement. anything outside of his more utilitarian interests will be buried so deep and even when he expresses interest in something, how much he enjoys it will always be muted and embarrassed, no matter how much they tell him its okay to be proudly cringe about something. this was already a deeply fragile trait of his and it was always on the verge of shattering, and they didnt simply tip it over, they broke it into unrecognizable pieces.

hell, i could see them realizing far in the future realizing really small things too, like,,, when was the last time donnie sang or danced around them? gave the idea to go to the movies? talked about what he was reading or watching? expressed interest in cosplay? gloated after beating them in video games? asked for them to pick his favorites during movie nights without being prompted first? went out of his way to look for merch of the things he loves? was all of that permanently destroyed by the family meeting? will they ever see him euphoric about something again?

i think sometimes the grief is overwhelming, and its not only them that grieve for him. when donnie recognizes how instinctual it is i could see it upsetting him to the point of tears, sometimes just out of nowhere-- he's doing something else and it just hits him and he cant take it, because he just wants to be happy. after a while he'll start to find it unfair how he just cant, how he is stopped up by terror he cant even name anymore and how deeply he's internalized this idea that he was childish and selfish and how that's utterly destroyed his joy. something that was already so delicate in the first place.
