upset about arnheid vinlandsaga again today so i reread some of her scenes and i'm still marveling at how well her storyline was executed. i have literally no complaints about how the author handles her situation; even her death doesn't feel like she was done wrong by the narrative (though i would be more invested if she was still alive). she has real interiority and complex motivations and she's written with such delicasy and sympathy that you can tell that the author understands her. basically every other character in this arc can be judged by how they treat arnheid - thorfinn and einar's ride-or-die solidarity for a fellow slave who has treated them both with kindness, snake clearly seeing her as a person despite his respect for the status quo and anger over the deaths of his men, the petty cruelty of ketil's wife (which could never escalate to the level of what ketil is capable of), ketil treating her relatively well as long as she dedicates herself entirely to his pleasure and then beating her to death in a rage when she tries to escape with another man
lots of characters judge her harshly for her actions (to ketil's wife she's ungrateful, to snake's men she's spoiled and selfish, to ketil she's a traitor) but the protagonists never do. thorfinn respects her resilience and pragmatism in the face of suffering, understands on some level the violence she's endured. einar values her friendship, he asks her what she wants and does everything he can to help her with whatever she chooses to do. they refuse to leave her behind in a war zone when she might be dying. they steal her from a man who will surely hurt her again if she lives. she's an ordinary woman, suffering a very brutal but mundane kind of violence, and for a little while she's the most important character in this story.
#also the extent to which she feels like a character designed for me to love is almost absurd#every step of her story just works. it all feels like the natural progression of events even as things spiral out of control#obsessed with einar's attitude towards gardar turning on a dime depending on what arnheid wants#at first he's like 'we gotta help her husband rescue her!'#but as soon as she tells him she wants to stay because it will be safer he worries that gardar will take her anyway#and when she decides to hide gardar he asks her if she's sure and when she says yes he's all in#i really do intend to keep reading but i feel like what comes next cannot possibly top this arc in appealing to me personally#vinland saga#arnheid

Okay okay
But like this has also been going around my head like:
There is absolutely no chance every borrower eats crackers and just bread so an idea sparked in me:
Borrower cousine!
Like borrowers having specific recipes with ingredients humans don't usually try to eat. Like: flipping dandelion jelly! Or grasshopper soup or something or drying out grass and making tea from it (I used to eat grass as a kid lol)
Thanka to my extensive 2021 cottagecore 9hase I can confirm this would 100% be it.
In my mind borrowers arent just 'humans but little', they have their own culture and customs and foods and delicasies. Of course there's a difference between borrowers in smaller vs larger groups, but the premise is the same.
Did you know that you can make paint out of flower petals? Because imagine traveling through the woods with your friends, a white rock catching your eye. Overturning the stone, theres a teeny tiny piece of tree bark (The thin, paper-like part iykwim) and there's a little painting on it, depicting what seems to be a story
Imagine the culture and myths surriunding humans, shit would be absolutely insane! It's either they're 'if you're seen, you're dead. they are animals, they kill like animals.' or they're 'if you're seen, you're dead. humans are too intelligent to be empathetic, they will not listen to your pleading.' and it creates an absolutely horrifying picture of humans either being driven by the animalistic need to kill, or being basically god level smart HDOSKSK
Ough and the FOODDD
Dandelion jam is brilliant btw!! Ough putting it on little itty bitty breads that they baked.. EHEUZBAKAJ
They'd find ways to scavenge and recycle as much material as they can, using leftover dandelion stems to make whats basically cellery, putting it in little stews (generally with I'd like to think meat from rodents or other small things?)
If they manage to get a strawberry, it's a wonderful day. Depending on the size of the borrower colony they'd be able to get ALOT out of it, making jams and jellies and outright munching on it. And bigger fruit like lemons or oranges? They'd get as much juice as they could into containers, and use the dried out flesh as decoration or spices!:D They use the peels for a multitude of things ofc (including spices and maybe even insulation?)
Imagine them hunting beetles and using the non-edible parts as armor
..I really rambled here I apologize BDKSK
#KJ yaps 🐦#screamer answers 🎆#g/t#borrowers#IM SO SORRY FOR GOING OFF ON A TANGENT I JUST REALLY ENJOY THE INTRICACIES OF THESE LITTLE LOSERS

I dont and never will drink alchohol but I am abseloutly inlove with the fact that wine wine gets better the older it is and people will drink it decades later and its considered a delicasy when it is Very Old. Do me a favour and imagine you are being gifted with the odlest wine in the world. How did you get it? Maybe you saved someone and they gave it to you as a thanks or paiment, maybe you were gifted it by an ancient god. Most foods are higher quality the fresher they are, but New can forever be made again and again be New. Old cant. You can never again have wine be that old ever again. It is do so rare and so so specail and is likley worth more than any currency in the world on acount of its Ancientness (like you technically can name a price for it but will it be worth it?) and so youre stuck with the dillema of what to do with it because on one hand it is So Rare. Ther eis nothing in the world as rare as that wine is. So will you drink it? It will be gone faster than a blink compare to how long it was fermenting. Its a gift from a god; a shadow cast by a now long dead world and you are standing in its ashes. Or perhaps do you save it. Wait for the right opportunity you keep telling yourself will one day come and you will be abke to drink that older than civilizations wine. But deep in your heart you know you cant. Not that wine. Its too precious. The time of it being drunk was gone a long time ago; before it was as precious as it was. So will you save it? Will you never drink it will you leave it forever sitting there until future scholars future foolish inconsequential mortals such as you will find it. You will be Condamning them to the same fate. Or worse! Someone could find it and not know of its value - not know of its history not know what a gift it is not know they need to savour it. Which, yes, they will be avoiding your cruel fate but then your wine will be gone unappriciated. Your divine gift. A joke. You begin to wonder if it were not all a cruel prank by a mind older than you can comprehend with intentions far beyound your imagination. What are you to them? Barely a speck of dust. Yet they gave you this wine. This ancient gift. A gift like no other. Do you leave it in your basement for years to come? Till it is part of the earth it's grapes grew out of? Youre only mortal after all. You dont deserve a gift as divine as that ancient wine.

Baldurian Delicasies [Valentine's Fluff]
Alright. It is Valentine's Day and this year I decided to go with the theme: "The way to a person's heart is through their stomach." Three fics for this, though one has five chapters.
The first one is Baldurian Delicasies - which also is for the @polyamships Polyam Shipping Day this month. Because I am going with the full polyam Ship I have here: Astarion/Tav/Kantei/Themberchaud/Halsin.
Each chapter featuring someone else cooking!
Baldurian Delicasies
Fandom: Baldur's Gate 3 Shipping: Astarion/Tav/Kantei/Themberchaud/Halsin Genre: Fluff
The way to a person's heart is through their stomach. Or: The different partners cook for each other. To varying results.

I much prefer that british food poll that actually describes them deliciously because like. The other one was like "I'm gonna make a poll making fun of bad british food (specifies that several of the dishes are unseasoned)."
And then the cherry on top with the "wow british people are actually defending their local delicasies like jellied eel in the notes, how disgusting!"
Which is effectively like roasting a French person for liking snails. Like yeah man congrats, you've successfully noticed that a food that seems weird to you is actually enjoyed by many people. You're really on the cutting edge of food based comedy.

3. 💍 JEWELRY: What are considered luxury items in the world of your WIP?
Does a little dance.
In the world of Albea, luxury items are fairly varied. So let's break it down a bit:
Clothing: Spider-silk clothing. Spiders have been semi-domesticated in Albea in the same way we irl have done to silkworms. Their silk is gathered en-masse after the long, warm summers cause them to create giant communal webs to catch prey, then it is washed and spun and THEN it's very carefully woven into clothing. And the clothing made from this silk is very, very flexible and a bit waterproof.
As you can imagine, this is a very long and exact process, thus the resulting products cost a small fortune.
Jewelry: Gemstones and fossils. But not for the same reason as Earth.
Genstones on Earth are pricy because of a bunch of different reasons. On Albea, they're pricy because Albean mining operations are MUCH different from Earth to deal with how easy it is to set off the environment - which means no strip mining, no explosives, nothing majorly destructive. Thus, certain gemstones are a much more difficult find.
As for fossils, Albea has a very robust paleontology circle - it's fairly common to see a person wearing some fossilized shells or even a tooth placed in a bottle as a necklace.
And finally, food: skyren meat. Is that animal name permanent? No clue. Anyways.
There is a giant, heavily specialized kind of bird that I am (for now) calling skyrens. Now, these giant creatures can cause effectively a land-based whalefall - often falling in the middle of prairies and deserts, bringing food to the ecosystem for possibly years.
Wamashi, being carnivores, also like to participate in this. The issue is it's very difficult to find a dying skyren before they're already decaying and/or have been eaten by scavengers. So when they DO get the meat (and feathers! They're useful for many things) it's an absolute delicasy.

Dearest frost demons. Among all mortal kin scattered among endless cosmos, your kin has proven to be the most fascinating and beautiful in its own, unknown to me, ways, with you two being main examples. I am glad to knoa you two and seeing you two in such coundition aches my heart...
So... I decided to maybe sweeten these hard days for these two beloved icejins i became fond of. Hoping to see you two on feet, thriving and shining brighter than ever before.
P.s. You can test it if suspicious, but i assure you, they are not poisoned.
*delicasies were delivered through portals by green hands*
Frieza: My goodness, this is unexpected. Especially from a Kai. Nonetheless, your gift is rather generous. We thank you for it. Hopefully Frost enjoys his dessert as well.
*meanwhile in the other room*
Frost: What a surprising little treat! This is rather kind of you. This whole ordeal has proven to be quite difficult, so we full heartedly appreciate this.

When I laid my eyes on the two, I knew that one before one unwillingly I had to come clean. I drew water from a well that welcomed me by the rhythm of the splatter and the pitter patter doesn't damper the musky aroma. No shave, November? are the makings of me, and the pieces I’ve placed intricately result in the interstellar commentary that Venus versus Mars isn’t, it is in fact Saturn with no retrograde because the mercury doesn’t exist in the rain, so to shovel a ditch is not grounded- it is a delicasy just like Thelma and Louise.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE DUDE! The way you incorporated the original mushroom into his design is just wonderful! Saffron despite being such a delicasy for lizards looks like he has a fairly good camouflage for the enviroment he is living in, wich is really cool. His color pallet and patterns are also just gorgeus! I also really like his lore, Saffron is such a fun character! You did a grate job with him!
Okay, I'm joining your trend, guys, it's too cool)
Lactarius Deliciosus or Saffron Milkcup - my most favourite mushroom🧡
Beautiful, tasty, crunchy - this is what lizards think about when they see Saffron. No one knows exactly what kind of slugcat he is, but for some reason he attracts more predators than any other ones. Bad for him on one hand, but good for everyone else on the other. That’s why he is always ready to take the hit and lead the danger as far away from colony as possible. Even if it means he might need to be saved afterwards😅
He didn’t have any sort of special abilities or poisons like many other slugshrooms. So he can only rely on his strength and agility. And after years of training, he really became a good guard, although his work still sometimes leaves scars on his body
Saffron also loves to cook and even has his own secret recipes. With secret ingredient… Very special ingredient…
Yeah, he uses his milk sweat for cooking. It gives dishes a richer, sweet and spicy flavor and, as he believes, makes the dishes much tastier. But, for some reason, other slugcats didn't really appreciate his idea, and now he is not allowed to cook for everyone
However, Saffron continues to cook for himself and create new recipes. In a portable pot made from a snail shell, he always carries some of his signature soup, which he is ready to share with tired and lost travelers)))

Baldurian Delicasies Pt. 3 [Valentine's Fluff]
Chapter 3 is online. This one features Themberchaud trying to fish. The emphasis is on trying, because Tav and Kantei being childish does not make it easy.
