NEW DELHI: The capital reported 1,254 fresh cases on Covid-19 on Wednesday — the highest in over three months, while six more people succumbed to the disease, the health department said. This is the highest number of single-day cases since December 18 when 1,418 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The city had recorded 1,101 Covid cases on Tuesday. It was the first time since December 24 that the number of cases had crossed the 1,000 mark. The active cases on Wednesday rose to 4,890 from 4,411 a day ago. The positivity rate rose to 1.52%, the health bulletin stated. The Covid positivity rate in Delhi had been 1.31% on Tuesday. The new infections pushed the total tally to 6,51,227, of which over 6.35 lakh patients have recovered from the virus. Six more people died from the viral infection on Wednesday, taking the number of fatalities to 10,973. A total of 82,331 tests, including 52,224 RT-PCR tests, were conducted in the past twenty-four hours, the bulletin said. The number of people under home isolation rose to 2,560 from 2,316 a day ago. Man injured after being attacked with knife NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old sweeper was injured when a man attacked him with a knife after an argument broke out between them in southeast Delhi's Jamia Nagar area, police said on Thursday. The victim, Sonpal, a resident of Nehru Nagar, works as a sweeper in the municipal corporation on contract basis in Jamia Nagar. Following the incident, which took place on Wednesday morning, the accused was arrested, they said. "Around 7 am, when Sonpal was on duty, a man named Mohammad Shiraz (28), also a resident of Jamia Nagar, attacked him with a knife after an argument broke out between them over cleaning," deputy commissioner of police (southeast) RP Meena said. Police said the accused told the victim that he was not cleaning properly, after which the argument escalated. Sonpal sustained injuries on his neck and right arm. He was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital for treatment, the DCP said. Representative imageNEW DELHI: A teen who targeted ATMs in Karol Bagh, Prasad Nagar and Patel Nagar areas was arrested in central Delhi. He had decided to break into ATMs for money to buy liquor. The accused, Kunal Ridla (19), was found to be involved in at least half a dozen cases of breaking into ATMs in central Delhi in the past four months. DCP (central) Sanjay Bhatia said that following a spurt in the number of break-ins at ATMs, a team led by SHO Karol Bagh Maninder Singh was formed to track down the burglars. The cops scanned through all the CCTV cameras within a radius of 1km near the ATMs during which they saw the youth in some of them. "We laid a trap for the youth near Karol Bagh and arrested him. NEW DELHI: Following a pause of over five months due to Covid-19 pandemic, Delhi Metro is all set to resume its services in three stages from September 7-12. According to the guidelines by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the stations in containment zones would remain closed. Only asymptomatic people will gain entry, and then they will be under a hawk-eyed vigil on wearing masks and keeping distance. No tokens will be issued and only smart cards will work.
