In a country where dorm beds can be scored for as low as 400 Indian rupees (approximately £4), cheap street eats are abundant and long-distance sleeper trains can cost as little as 600 rupees (approximately £6), you can live comfortably on a daily budget of around 2,500 rupees (approximately £25). Shoestring travellers can, however, cut costs even more.’

Vietnam

‘Vietnam is a budget backpacker’s paradise, with some of the cheapest beer in the world (bia hoi), low-priced dorms and private rooms, inexpensive and efficient long-distance transportation, and dining bills that will barely make a dent in your bank account. Rather unusually, the capital, Hanoi, is one of the cheapest Vietnamese cities to explore, though other popular destinations, such as Ho Chi Minh City, Sapa, Hoi An and Hue, won’t cost a fortune either. A basic meal, such as a bowl of pho (noodles), costs around 40,000 Vietnamese dong (approximately £1.24), and freshly baked breads and pastries make for a pocket-friendly breakfast. If you can stretch to 1.4m dong (approximately £43) per day, you’ll be able to do a lot more on your trip and enjoy meals in nice restaurants every so often, but you can have a great time with around 930,000 dong (approximately £29) each day.’

Sri Lanka

‘The headline attractions and activities in Sri Lanka are somewhat known for high costs. For example, climbing the impressive rock of Sigiriya will set you back 6,000 Sri Lankan rupees (approximately £22) and a half-day safari in Yala National Park costs around 6,950 rupees (approximately £25.30) per person. Cheap accommodation, meals and transportation go some way towards offsetting the higher travel costs; cheap-yet-filling meals cost around 250 rupees (approximately £0.91). Enjoying the beaches and roaming around cultural cities can be done for free, meaning you can enjoy Sri Lanka with a daily budget of around 6,000 rupees (approximately £22).’

Coronavirus: Delhi has shut all markets and sealed its borders (File)New Delhi: Eighty cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru are going into complete lockdown this month as India fights to contain the spread of coronavirus.The states going into lockdown till March 31 include those where coronavirus cases have been reported - Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Telangana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, West Bengal, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Puducherry and Uttarakhand.Trains, metros and inter-state buses have been suspended across the country. Markets, malls, cinemas, schools, colleges and gyms are already shut in most of the states. Many have also imposed Section 144, a law that bans more than five people from gathering.A list of cities on lockdown was released after the Cabinet Secretary had a meeting with Chief Secretaries of all states this morning.Delhi has shut all markets and sealed its borders, said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, announcing a lockdown from 6 am on Monday to March 31. Three deaths were reported today.Worldwide , as many as 13,049 people have died and the deadly virus has infected 3.7 lakh people.A group of scholars and data scientists from Johns Hopkins University, Michigan University and DSE, called the COV-IND-19 Study Group, has said in a report that without such intervention by state governments, India could have an explosion of cases by mid-May. However, the cases will drastically reduce with the most severe form of intervention, which includes social distancing, travel bans and lockdown.The report says "the epidemiologic and mathematical calculations make a convincing case for enforcing severe interventions, they come at a tremendous price to the social and economic health of the people of India.The experts also express concern that there is a "critical missing or unknown component" that depends on the extent and frequency of testing."We conclude that it is highly appropriate to adopt draconian measures for the largest democracy in the world, acting early, before the growth of COVID-19 infections in India starts to accelerate," says the group. Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is located on the Chorao islands.It Covers an area of approx 1.8 sq km.The park is located on a beautiful island which has not dropped any of its old Portuguese charm complete with villas and Churches which are white-washed.

The park is covered by exquisite greenery which includes mangrove vegetation and washed by a network of mini river streams and tributaries the sanctuary plays host to a variety of birds such Apart from the Bird Kingdom, the Sanctuary also plays host to animals like crocodiles, jackals and otters.

It is home to many species of birds. Including the migratory birds there are about 400 species of birds seen at the Dr.Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.Some of the birds are Eagles, kites, kingfishers, egrets, parrots, cormorants, herons etc. Coots and Pintails visit during the winter season.

Wildlife

Dr.Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary lies in a small area of 1.8 square kilometres, it is home to many species of birds and some wild animals as well.

Crocodiles

One can sometimes catch a glimpse of wild jackals, foxes, crocodiles and flying foxes. Some of the rare sightings have been of panthers feasting on its prey and tigers drinking water from a water hole. All these animals are seen here due to the dense forest and the Mandovi river water, which acts as the chief source of drinking water for these animals.

Flora

The Dr.Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary has been named after the renowned ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, and it is unique in its own way. The flora here consists of the rare mangrove shrub is found only along the banks of the Mandovi and Mapusa rivers and along the Cumbarjua canal. The unique feature of the mangrove is that it supports some varieties of fish and insects which fall at the bottom of the ecosystem. Here it deserves a mention that mangrove vegetation is one of the most productive vegetations.

Open throughtout the year, entry to the sanctuary is prior to the permission of the Chief Wild Life Warden, Forest Department, Junta House, Panaji. Boats and canoes are the best means to explore the sanctuary. Boats cannot navigate in low tide but the narrow canoes fare marvelously at all times.

Watch tower

The Dr.Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary has a watch tower to see the birds and some interesting and rare winter migratory birds here include coots and pintails. The mangrove ecosystem supports the growth of many small insects and fish which act as prey for the birds, thus attracting many birds here. This just shows us how nature works symbiotically and simply, thus establishing a relationship between the birds and the mangrove shrubs. All in all, it’s a great experience for ornithologists as well as commoners due to the number of birds, the dense mangroves, and the small canoes, which are used to move about in the sanctuary.
