India and Independence- Part 1

Tomorrow, 15th of August, is when India celebrates her 77th Independence day and I'd like to rant on everything that should be brought in spotlight. Here we go:

Religion and its role in today's India: I expect we all know what's the current state of religion is in India. It has became no more than a political tool to gain votes. Nothing more. People kill, torture, rape, exploit in the name of religion. The united front this country once presented in the face of the colonisers has long been collapsed. People of different faith find themselves questioning their safety and rights in our country. Have we all forgotten? That in the struggle of independence, we didn't see eachother as hindu, muslims or Sikh, we were just Indians. That during the Jallian wala bagh shootings, the Britishers didn't discriminate between Hindus and muslims, they open fired at all. So why today we point fingers at eachother? Why does extremist parties still thrive in this country who spread religious hatred and entice communal violence? They put on a facade that 'blah blah religion is under threat' and naively everyone agrees. The higher ups plays with the religious beliefs so that they can remain in that position of power. We must remind ourselves this independence day that as long as we foster religious hate, we are never going to develop.

Deep rooted patriarchy and it's cruel effects on the women of this country: Oh I can never run out of words when speaking on this topic. Whether you're a man who has been told since childhood that "boys don't cry" or a woman who has experienced all the atrocities committed by people around you just because you're a woman. We all have experienced the toxic effects of Patriarchy in our daily lives. The mindset that men are superior, more logical, more capable, owner of the house, women are emotional, weak, should stay at home, lower their voices while talking to men, each and every one of this point mixes the poison of Patriarchy deeper into the rivers of this country. It is so deeply engraved that people don't even bat an eyelash when a husband treats his wife like shit. Domestic abuse is common in India. Violence against women is justified. "Husbands have a right to beat their wives", I heard this from the mouth of my own grandmother 2 days ago. This country got independence 77 years ago, but women don't have any in this country. From the second we step out of their homes, men eye us lecherously, we step into our workplace, the manager gives us a creepy smile, we go to schools and colleges, the principal teaches us "don't dress provocatively." Where are the morals? Rape has became so common that we don't understand how horrific it is. And how do the rapists get punished? Bilkis bano's rapists were bailed out and were felicitated with garlands and bouquets as if they did some great thing for the country. THEY GANG RAPED HER. Nirbhaya's case (Delhi 2012), changed nothing! The convicts were hanged yes, but what did the government do to lessen the chances of another nirbhaya? What did they do to protect the women of our country? Nothing. Prajjwal Revanna, a renowned politician, whose rally our honourable pm😍 himself attended, had raped women and had recorded sex tapes of him doing the act. What was the action taken against him? Nothing. The recent news that cut deeply through the medical community, The kolkata doctor's horrific rape and brutal murder. She had completed her 36 HOUR shift and had dinner with her juniors at 2 am. Then went to rest in the seminar hall. What are they doing to bring justice? Nothing, just false assurances. All this country does is sits back and wait for another Bilkis bano, another nirbhaya, another female doctor. When is this going to change?

On 13th August 1907 Scottish architect, Sir Basil Spence, was born.

Spence was born in Bombay, India, his education began at the John Connon School, operated by the Bombay Scottish Education Society, he was then sent back to Scotland to attend George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1919–1925. He enrolled at Edinburgh College of Art in 1925, studying architecture.

In 1929–1930 Spence spent a year as an assistant, along with William Kininmonth, in the London office of Sir Edwin Lutyens, whose work was to have a profound influence on his style, where he worked on designs for the Viceroy's House in New Delhi, India.

While in London he attended evening classes at the Bartlett School of Architecture under A. E. Richardson. Returning to Edinburgh College of Art in 1930 for his final year of studies, he was appointed a junior lecturer, despite the fact that he was still a student. He continued to teach there until 1939.

Basil Spence is arguably the most internationally renowned 20th-century architects, known principally for his breath-taking work rebuilding Coventry Cathedral. Spence was an eclectic architect whose work ranged from vernacular-styled fisherman’s dwellings in Dunbar to opulent traditional country houses to ultra-modern pieces like the Edinburgh University library. He has been compared to Robert Adam by some for his detailed attention to interiors. Some of his work might have been criticized but my favourite of his in Edinburgh has stood the test of time as other buildings of the 60’s and 70’s have been pulled down. The Scottish Widows Building at Dalkeith Roads on the south side of Edinburgh is in my opinion beautiful, it’s hexagonal bronze-tinted glassy exterior with the water reflecting the sun onto it at times and of course the backdrop of Arthur’s seat helps. The views out to Arthur’s seat and Edinburgh on the upper floors must be a joy for those that work there.

Although known for his modern work, which isn’t to everyone's liking some of his designs are more classical, like Glenwood at Glenlockhart Road, Edinburgh as seen in pic three, and Murrayfield Golf Clubhouse in the next photo. The other photos are of the man himself and Coventry Cathedral.

2023 CM press on for early Forest approvals

SHIMLA 27th February, 2023       Discusses State's issues with Union E&F Minister Chief Minister, Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in a meeting with Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi today advocated for early forest clearances for escalating various ongoing development projects in Himachal Pradesh. Sh. Sukhu urged the Union Minister to ensure early forest approvals in a time bound manner for construction of heliports, green corridors as mandated by the State Government for making Himachal as 'Green Energy State' by the year 2025 and other major ongoing projects. The tough geological conditions of Himachal Pradesh, necessitate to construct heliports, not only to facilitate the tourists visiting the State, but also cater to the emergency needs during natural calamities or otherwise. A decision should be taken without delay regarding the necessary forest clearances pending for the construction of the heliports, he urged the Union Minister. The state government is promoting e-vehicles in Himachal Pradesh and developing necessary infrastructure for the same by constructing adequate number of e-charging stations for electrical vehicles. Besides, green corridors would also be constructed on both sides of all National and state highways in the state. In order to speed up the process, various approvals regarding forest land should be accorded in time to achieve the target, said the Chief Minister. Delay in forest clearances creates unnecessary delay in the construction of development projects, especially educational institutions, roads and bridges and ropeways etc. He urged that these approvals should be given as soon as possible. The Chief Minister advocated that the State forest officers of the state should work in unison with the central level forest officers and should take up the cases pending with the Ministry so that approvals can be received in time. Detailed discussions were also held regarding the state's water reservoirs, wild life sanctuaries and eco-tourism guidelines and other important topics including Parivesh Portal, National Transit Pass System, School Nursery Scheme, City Forest Scheme, Davanal (Forest fires) during the summer season in the state. The Chief Minister invited Union Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav to visit Himachal. The Union Minister assured all possible help to the state.
