I promised myself I wouldn't talk about this 🤪 because it's enough to be part of the Sejanus defense squad but I'm curious to hear from my mutuals. Small caveat because I think the knowledge and analysis I have of THG is quite minor compared to what I have on TBOSAS.
But I saw a very good post that motivated me to talk about this because I've hardly seen many posts but on one hand it makes sense Katniss blames Gale in one way but that doesn't necessarily mean that's what happened? Let me explain.
Katniss loses Prim and becomes quite suicidal. One of the people she loved and trusted the most in a roundabout way was involved in creating the weapon that killed her sister. I think it makes sense from her grief, mourning, suicidal desires to blame and push Gale away but that's Katniss perspective from a very personal point of view.
While Gale bears some responsibility I don't think this as what many fans and Katniss herself point to him as the direct cause of Prim not being alive. No no no. Gale has responsibility in that of course if you help develop weapons, there is the possibility that they will take lives but even that can be questioned because how much choice was there? Is there such a thing as a percentage of guilty?
Because people seem to ignore his trauma, oh yes he was older than Katniss by a few years. Very few actually. And he's been living in survival mode and suffering trauma after trauma. He lost his best friend then his home.
Gale is also fragile and d13 decides to support him as they helped everyone in d12 under the condition of having soldiers to do free labor.
They are well clothed and fed now but d13 have them doing schedules where they do.... Guess what? Work! They are refugees who pay for their stay with hard labor ah.
And Gale didn't go around talking about making weapons and murder children. He demonstrates a couple of times his agility and that's what that military regime decides he should empower. They push him to it. They cheer him up to it. (Moment to side eye Beete).
Too I must said. Gale is no fool (is soooo fucking smart actually) but we really have to wonder how much he participated with those weapons if you consider the ineffective education he received. He have some experience hunting and creativity but for sure specialized people was actually making those weapons.
It don't stop there because more than that. I repeat are percentages of blame? Because he give some ideas, suggestions that powerful people ask him to give and they chose to made a reality. Personally I don't believe percentages of blame is a thing in this case.
His hability to choose was very limited. There were no options and the few he was offered on how to deal with his grief and need for justice were choices that other people made for him.
(And then people could talk how d13 and the rebellion did what it need do to take down a dictatorship and stop a war and all the conflicts).
