This should've been the villain song in Wish
youtube
I just saw the movie and I was not impressed. The songs could've been better though. Especially the VILLAIN SONG.
The movie isn't the worst, but it's not the best either. It's just mediocre. It's fine.
Compared to the movies it references though (oh boy do they reference em'), it's just shows how vague and muddled the movie is.
I think it needed another rewrite or two, because it has the pieces there, they just need to be better connected.
I'll make a separate post about my thoughts on the movie.
Anyway, I think that with the context of the scene before Magnifico starts his villain song that " All That I've Done For You", would've fit much better. Especially with how Magnifico feels about the kingdom, his subjects questioning him, and could've given, us the audience, a little more understanding of how his backstory has influenced his behaviors.
This would have also been a nod to how in Encanto, where Alma held on too tight in fear of losing her home again. Except, instead of realizing he's gone too far or that his actions are hurting the people he swore to protect, he doubles down, he gets angry, he doesn't understand why no one else understands the threat to the kingdom. He then sees everyone questioning him as a betrayal to all he's ever done for them. They're traitors and will be treated as such.
If the story was better written then everything Magnifico chooses to do would be direct responses to trauma. He can still be the villain, but we should watch it happen. Like a fall arc.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
He's probably very paranoid of another threat that could destroy his home again. So what did he do when he lost everything? He researched, studied and practiced magic so he could become strong. So he would never lose again.
Then he founded Rosas. Why? So anyone in need of a home would be safe, protected and provided for.
Then he starts granting wishes for the people and this is what he becomes known for. But... Why? Idk. The movie isn't really good at giving a answer that isn't vague.
Why does he not grant all of them? Fear.
He's afraid, he's paranoid of the butterfly effect. He looks for every possible outcome for the wishes he considers granting and begins thinking of every worse case scenario, unable to see the good.
I feel like there should be a magic system of some kind, rules to how his magic works, maybe there are limits or consequences of wish magic.
Like equivalent exchange or his powers draw energy from his life force and uses the wishes energy? Magic? To keep himself alive?
Or if Disney wanted him to be evil from the start and really have him ham it up. Maybe use this song from Elena of Avalor.
youtube
Just replace the lyrics, he stole everything he wanted, even took my two pet mice, with
He stole everything he wanted, even took my parents' lives

This gives me "Out There" vibes from Quazimodo in Hunchback of Notre Dame 🥹🥹🥹
I think this would've been a very interesting addition to the series if they'd found a way to recycle it! (Also I'm definitely looking up these deleted Disney songs on Youtube!)
youtube
It would’ve been kinda cool if they recycled this for the show.

All right, so there was a post a while back about someone realizing the Deleted Scene featuring Starboy and Asha actually had parallels to "At All Costs", so I decided to make an edit to see how it panned out, and here's the result:
I AM NOT OKAY. DAMN IT, DISNEY.😭
I'M CRYING AGAIN—

Actually, no, I’m just going to talk about Sabino.
Tumblr media
I was going to talk about the deleted song “A Wish Worth Keeping,” but suffice to say: that song would not have made the movie better because that song had the same terrible point as the movie: “The power to make your wishes come true is in you, so keep wishing.”
No. Bad. Bad point, therefore bad movie.
The deleted song wouldn’t have saved it. Stop saying “Why This Song Matters” and “The Deleted Song That Could’ve Fixed Wish.” Figure out what was wrong with the movie first. Then you can properly figure out what should and shouldn’t have been cut from the movie.
Now let’s talk about Sabino.
I already said several times that the character is terrible in the actual movie. The idea of him could’ve been good, especially when you’re trying to say something about the concept of wishing, though.
In Wish, he’s an old man who’s tangible wish-trapped-in-a-bubble has never been granted. You’re supposed to feel bad for him; his life has been so long and he’s never gotten what he really wanted. But, even if you accept what the movie is telling you (the main point I referenced up there) he doesn’t do a good job supporting it.
Sabino can’t remember his wish. (Stupid.) So you don’t feel that bad for him. He gave it up when he was eighteen. He’s lived more of his life with no wish to miss than he did with one that didn’t come true. So what if it never comes true? He’ll just keep living as a vaguely cheerful guy with people who love him. He’s never that sad. We don’t care.
Tumblr media
Also, when the idea that his wish will never come true is presented to him, he just… accepts it. On the one hand, that’s logical because of what I just said. But on the other hand, what a wasted opportunity to say something about your lousy “keep on wishing” main theme.
He’s 100 Years Old. He could have been the character that watches and waits, no matter how much time passes, and genuinely has faith like Cinderella or Geppetto or Snow White or Ray the Firefly or Ariel, and hangs on to his wish.
But they couldn’t do that. They couldn’t have an old character who is an example to a young woman. Because they had to have Asha be the one to “teach” everyone the “you have the power, so keep on wishing” message. You have to have her be the spirited child who proves the naysayers wrong—and therefore, you have to have Sabino be the naysayer. He doesn’t get to be the wise old man who teaches her something. He has to be the guy who says “you’re young, sit down and give up.”
Of course, they can’t even really commit to that either, because they’re still halfway-trying to make Sabino sympathetic, they’re trying to convince you that Asha really loves him and everybody does because he’s a sweet old man with a dream. But they half-do everything, and the base is rotten for all of it, so we don’t care.
Tumblr media
Here’s what they should’ve done:
If you’re sticking with that terrible main theme: Give Sabino a wish that he never gives up on. Don’t let him give it to Magnifico. Let him keep it for himself and spend a hundred years working toward it, and he comes close several times, and it keeps blowing up in his face, and everyone (including Asha) thinks he’s crazy for keeping it, but he gets up and tries again over and over. That would’ve at least been interesting and had a shot at being impactful.
Get RID of that terrible main theme. Switch it to “have faith” and then make Sabino the one with the faith. And again, his age highlights that it is hard. It takes a long time. He spends most of his life yearning and wishing, but he never gives up or stops acting on faith. He becomes a source of inspiration for the people around him—except Asha, who loves him but needs to find her own faith before she can understand him—and then eventually joins him in faith. Like Jane from Return to Neverland. (Yes I said it.)

"Defiance" (Deleted Song from my "Wish" rewrite)
Tumblr media
Surprise! I was originally gonna delete this post, but I thought it'd be fun to release this as "deleted content" like a real movie! I hope you enjoy it. I'm not done writing Act I, but this would be in the final act of the story between our star named Anselm and the villain named...well, I can't spoil that, yet. I'm also doing a story overhaul, so that was another reason I deleted this. If this seems half-baked, that's because it's incomplete! Hopefully I'll come up with something MUCH better.
Color Key:
Anselm (singing)
Anselm (talking)
Villain (singing)
Villain (talking)
Can't you see I'm suffocating when you force me in a cage?
Can't you start a new beginning without tearing out a page?
Can't you tell your heart is twisted, gonna snuff out all my light?
Can't you understand when I ask you to tell me wrong from right?
"I...I can't do this anymore. I can't LIVE like this anymore! It is not in my nature to do the things you have asked me to do, to do them how you've told me to do. I'm sorry, but I'll help you no further."
"Get the lights."
Huh, you used to be quiet, diligent, always so innocent,
Now you're rubbing sticks, making my fire grow.
Is there something wrong with me? I do everything for free
And my blood runs hot, don't you know?
Love you, leave you, never can I please you.
I don't have telepathy; I can't read your mind.
But you owe me a boon, the sun for the moon
You'll see sooner or later that our interests align.
Bouncing off the walls, you're frazzled
I understand that you've been bedazzled.
But Talia can't fight your battles
And now you can't run 'cause I've got you in shackles!
Master or Mistress, whatever you want
Remember my dear, I don't rise to taunts.
But you've bitten my hand after all we've been through
So open yours eyes, look what you've made me do!
Lemme know what you think and if you have any questions! I may delete this post later since it's scrapped material.

For Fun: Here's My Favorite Disney Songs That Were Deleted/Changed In The Final Film (Part 4)
Tumblr media
"Someday" was meant to be Esmeralda's song in Hunchback of Notre Dame, but was replaced by "God Help the Outcasts" in the final version. It was sung over the credits, however, and both would be sung in the stage adaptation.
youtube
"Shooting Star" was the original "I Want" song from Hercules, but was cut for being "too soft". I could take either or, but "Go the Distance" is still a classic.
youtube
"I Can't Believe My Heart" was Meg's original song. It was cut for similar reasons as "Shooting Star". I definitely prefer the version we got.
youtube
Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the lyrics for Pocahontas and Hunchback with Alan Menken as well as all the music for Wicked, was originally tapped to write the music for Mulan. He left early in production to work on the music for "The Prince of Egypt" at DreamWorks. "Written In Stone" is the only song of his version available to listen to. It would've been in the spot where "Reflection" exists in the final film.
youtube
Speaking of "Reflection", when composers Matthew Wilder and David Zippel joined the film after Schwartz left, they wrote a much longer version of the song. The fact that this version is not in the film is a crime.
youtube
"Keep 'Em Guessin'" would've been Mushu's song as he introduces himself to Mulan, but Eddie Murphy's dialogue worked much better, and made things much more succinct. The song is enjoyable imo, tho.
youtube
Famously, Disney was working on a film set to release in late 2000 called Kingdom of the Sun. It was a sort of an Incan retelling of The Prince and the Pauper, with some magic and gods thrown in for good measure. It was supposed to be another grand musical on the scale of The Lion King, even sharing its co-director, Roger Allers. To match that scale, they brought in musician Sting to write the songs, thinking he'd bring the same energy that Elton John brought to Lion King's songs. Sting and co-composer David Hartley wrote three songs for this version. The first, "Walk the Llama Llama", would've been the opening song. It was to be sung by the main character, Pacha (here played by Owen Wilson), a teenage llama herder who coincidentally looks exactly like the spoiled teenaged Emperor Manco (played by David Spade). The song is Pacha expressing his love for the llama as he herded them. Pacha's singing voice would've been Sting himself in the final film. There also would've been a reprise halfway through the film and at the end, though nothing from these reprises has appeared online. Unfortunately, the only clean version of the song is this country-fied version by Rascal Flats on the Emperor's New Groove soundtrack.
youtube
The second song, "Snuff Out the Light", would have been sung by the villain of the film, Yzma (as played by Eartha Kitt). In this version, Yzma would have been an aging sorceress who hated the sun for causing her wrinkles. She would've discovered that Manco and Pacha swapped, and turned the real Pacha into a non-speaking llama. She would've manipulated Pacha into doing what she wanted. She planned to summon the Dark God, Supai to block out the sun so she wouldn't grow old. This song was fully recorded, and the sequence had quite a bit of animation finished on it before the story changed.
youtube
youtube
The third song, "One Day She'll Love Me" would have been the love song of the film, and been sung by Pacha and the emperor's betrothed, Nina. Pacha has fallen in love with Nina, but feels guilty for living a lie. Nina is starting to fall in love with him, but still believes he's Manco, and doesn't know why he's changing.

So I went to see Aladdin Jr. (Duel Language edition) at the local high school with the girls yesterday, and they got to watch me nerd out in real time because Jafar and Iago sang the song "Why Me."
The reason I was nerding out was because
youtube
I remember there being a live video of Jonathan Freeman singing it in preparation for his role as Jafar on Broadway, and I'm pissed off that I can't find it. Even more pissed off that the song wasn't performed on Broadway or included in the cast album.
