Watching Netflix’s Kaos so you don’t have to
Episode One review:
Ok so everyone pointed out how Americanized this show looked but it’s also hella British not just with the actors but with the tone, also I’m pretty sure Crete doesn’t look like that.
Anyway one thing that’s really confusing me is if the original mythology actually happened in the past of this universe. Like are Orpheus and Eurydice (Argh why do they call her Riddy that’s such a stupid nickname) reincarnations of their original selves? Is president Minos the same as King Minos? The most confusing thing of all is Dionysus’s arc, it’s all about him wanting to prove himself to his father as powerful god and expand his domain… but if he’s already an Olympian hasn’t he already done that? In mythology he literally had a whole journey going around Greece and beyond to make mortals worship him and earn a place among the Olympians, wouldn’t the show version already do that? This is all very confusing.
Anyway… why do the temples of the gods look like Christian churches? How do you westernize an already western culture? (With an eastern religion no less) And why does that priestess of Hera (who is Eurydice’s mother btw) have her tongue cut off??? And how does that make Hera able to hear her worshippers prayers? This is such a bizarre attempt to make the gods seem cruel and uncaring but Hera doesn’t do anything close to that in mythology, she’s does other cruel shit but the show doesn’t lean on that for some reason.
Sighhhhhhhhh I could complain about more stuff but I’m willing to hear this show out maybe it will ease my concerns idk
Let’s start with positives now:
First of all KITTTEEEEEEEEHHHHH
I like Zeus’s relationship with Hera and Prometheus so far
The arc with Eurydice falling out of love with Orpheus has the potential to be interesting
Dionysus is fun, idk about his characterization tho

PJO: we need to recognize the value of the minor gods. The Olympians are important, sure, but the minor gods do a lot of work in maintaining and assisting the pantheon, have their own kids and deserve to be seen and valued just as much
HoO: Back at it again with Olympian-only nonsense!

Devotional poem to Lord Prometheus
Amateur poem by an amateur poet
Flames withheld,
Snuck out by thee through fennel,
A hollow stalked plant.
Against the rules of the King,
Thy gifted us this light.
Our creator,
Of clay which thy sculpted us,
Brought us to light,
And presented us with flickering flame.
Ye who willingly took punishment for us,
Chained to that rock,
Feasted on by that eagle,
Our great provider.
Our Father Prometheus.

The Creation of Humanity
(the creation of humans, the Day of Fire, Prometheus' punishment)
The Gods were bored and needed something to do, something to provide them with entertainment. So Zeus set the Gods to work - having them each mold the creatures to populate the Earth with. They quickly busied themselves with their jobs, and soon all of the Earth's creatures were formed.
Next the creatures needed abilities - something to set them apart from others and give them a fighting chance of survival, after all, it wouldn't be very entertaining if they all died of within a couple hundred years. For this job, Prometheus was chosen. Prometheus is the Titan God of forethought, making him very suited for the job of ensuring species' survival. However, Prometheus' brother, Epimetheus (Titan God of afterthought), wanted a chance to prove himself and asked to do Prometheus' job, promising that he would let him inspect his work before they presented it to the rest of the Gods.
Prometheus begrudgingly agreed and Epimetheus began his work, taking great care with the abilities he gives to the creatures. Once he had finished his job he proudly showed his handiwork to his brother. Prometheus was pleasantly surprised, until he noticed a neglected figure that hadn't been given any abilities. He turned to his brother, asking him about the creature. Distraught at his mistake, Epimetheus admitted that he didn't have any abilities left to give to the creature - the 'human being'. There was no time to make amends and the creatures were presented to the rest of the Gods, who - delighted with their creations - populated the Earth with the various species.
It was immediately clear that humanity would not survive very long, their lack of abilities put their species at a huge disadvantage. Despite them being doomed to extinction, Prometheus felt a strong affinity towards human beings and realised that they needed a unique ability to survive as a species. And so he gave them one.
It came down like a lightning bolt, and suddenly the previously helpless humans were gifted Promethean intelligence.
Their newfound intelligence allowed humans to develop speech and spread survival techniques amongst themselves. The rest of the Gods naturally assumed that intelligence was humanity's ability. The Gods realised that due to their intelligence, human beings could fear the future.
And of course, the Gods were doing this for entertainment, so they made it so humans had to offer sacrifices to the Gods and ask them for the future to turn out the way they wanted. In order to give sacrifices they needed to have fire. Prometheus realised this quickly and convinced Zeus to allow humans to have fire in exchange for a portion of the human's sacrifices. Zeus declared that 'this is the Day of Fire,' adding that 'What is done today is final.'
Prometheus is given the task of separating the portions of the sacrifice for the Gods to decide which sections would be offered to the Gods. Prometheus wraps all of the best bits of meat in the cow's stomach, giving it the appearance of haggis. Next he covered the skeleton with fat and put the hide back on it. Zeus picks the skeleton.
When he realised he had been tricked Zeus was enraged. As punishment for Prometheus' deception, he took the fire away from the humans, wanting Prometheus to have to watch the humans he loves so dearly die out. Prometheus still wanted to help humanity to survive, so he broke into Hephaestus' workshop in a last ditch effort. He stole fire from the workshop, hiding it in the stalk of a fennel plant. Once he gave human beings fire, they celebrated and danced all night, overjoyed at the gift of fire. No matter what the Gods wanted to do, what was done that day was final.
Safe to say, Zeus is pissed. Prometheus is bound with chains forged by Hephaestus. He's dragged down from Mount Olympus and the chains binding him are driven into a rock. Everyday an eagle ate his liver. Overnight his liver regenerated and his body healed only for the eagle to come back again the next day.
And so he was stuck in his cruel punishment until 30,000 years later when Heracles is tasked with killing the eagle that has been tormenting Prometheus. He succeeds and Prometheus is left bound and naked, but at least the worst part of his punishment was over.
Years later, Prometheus negotiated with Zeus, offering him information on his and Thetis' future son in exchange for his freedom. At Mount Olympus Prometheus is made to wear a garland around his head, as a constant reminder of his chains.
His job was done - humanity was well and truly alive.

I think another thing that goes against Kaos as a show isn’t the writing itself but Netflix being Hellbent on making tv shows shorter and like “really long movies” where the story isn’t episodic even tho it’s cut into episodes therefore the pacing is so confusing to the point that an entire side plot isn’t brought up for a whole episode or two.
Not to mention that it makes the character interactions bare bones and bland, if you want to write relationships that aren’t canon in mythology, fine, whatever, just give me good reason to care about this couple. Supergiant’s Hades (for all its flaws) succeeds at this.
We are supposed to be sad about Prometheus and Charon separating but we literally see them as a couple for like what? Five minutes? The show doesn’t give us enough time to gaf about their relationship other than it’s “good representation” to have two old men in a relationship.
Eurydice and Caeneus have known each other for what couldn’t be more than a couple of days then see the Nothing and have their entire world view shattered then they fall in love and have sex? Only for Orpheus to be going through hell and back trying to get his wife back so how tf are we supposed to be invested in Eurydice cheating? Again the show doesn’t give us good reason to care for this couple other than its good representation.
Bruh don’t even get me started on Theseus and Astyanax, that’s the most bare bones of them all, I didn’t even catch that they were a couple until they had sex. Theseus has more screen time and chemistry with Ariadne than his supposed lover. Also stop trying to make good guy Theseus happen, it’s not going to happen.
The only fanon relationship that makes logical sense (as in within the story but as an adaptation it’s dog shit and I hate it) is Hera and Poseidon, they actually get multiple scenes and dialogue together so even if you are like me and hate to see them as a couple, it still makes logical sense for them as characters to like each other, but only if you don’t think of them as an adaptation.

Prayer for Confidence
Lord Ares Obrimos kai Lady Athene Pronoia, I pray to you, asking for your aid in my confidence and my ability to debate my opinions. I also pray to thee, Father Prometheus, for the foresight to not say what I will regret.

recently i got a tattoo that i’ve been wanting for two years and it’s made me realize how many tattoos i rly want . i was looking online for a nice design for prometheus and couldn’t find one i thought looked good enough for me . so for the first time in years , i picked up pen and paper ( apple pencil and screen xD ) and made this . after having had such an awful morning , this really brought me a lot of serenity and happiness . drawing used to be a source of stress just because i could never get things just as i wanted , but i’m lucky enough that my roommate let me borrow their ipad . honestly i’m so so happy with the outcome .
( the hands are from a reference picture that i traced . the rest is relatively freehand with some visual references ) .
