MARIA KOCHETKOVA: CATCH HER IF YOU CAN

Like many of her ballerina colleagues, Maria Kochetkova – the miniature Terpsichorean dynamo, who had been doing two full-time jobs, dancing with San Francisco Ballet and American Ballet Theater – has struck out on her own to dance more contemporary works, as have Sylvie Gillaume and Wendy Whelan of recent note and several others including Sarah Mearns, who’s keeping her day job with NY City Ballet for now.

Kochetkova dances with four of her pals in solos and duets; the program provides a showcase for their remarkable dancing skills. Her Joyce Theater program, July 16-21, titled “Catch Her If You Can,” opens with Kochetkova and Sebastian Kloborg in “Bach Duet” from “New Suite” by William Forsythe. It aptly sets the tone for the evening of contemporary ballet that follows, although not all of the choreography matches the caliber of Forsythe’s masterful deconstruction of ballet style for a new era.

The evening comprises eight short pieces by ballet choreographers, including Myles Thatcher of SFB; Marco Geocke, whose work is largely seen in Europe; Marcos Morau, a Spaniard, who also designed costume and lighting for his dance; David Dawson, a contemporary-classical choreographer; and French-born, international experimentalist Jerome Bel; as well as a dance by company member Drew Jacoby, who is now based in Antwerp.

The tiny Russian ballerina is – as my mother used to say – “as big as a minute,” but the extension of her lines into space and her stage presence are enormous. In the duet with Jacoby, “Rachel, Nevada” – a world premiere by Jacoby – their height disparity is the salient a feature.

The two wear unitards in different shades of pink, ringed with strategic hoops at waist, ribs, and neckline (costumes by Anja Mlakar). The video, op art animation by TOYKYO that backs the dance is obtrusive but not distracting; conical forms in broad, black and white bands, which swirl slowly, kaleidoscopically are fascinating and create a unique visual element that buoys the rather underdeveloped choreography. The ending of the video is more definitive than the end of the dance, which just stops.

The dances are all done with the same dynamic attack, so they become stylistically  indistinguishable from one another; they all share breakneck speed, contortionism, and non-stop, virtually unmodulated, continuous motion. They are the choreographic counterpart of the internet, where information bombards you a steady stream without modulation. There is no stillness, no energetic nuance, no pauses to appreciate the value of what you’re seeing.

David Dawson’s “White Swan Pas De Deux,” is set to the familiar Tchaikovsky music, and the divine Sofiane Sylvie does occasionally reference avian arms, with her reliable, partner Carlo Di Lanno. In his earlier solo “Painting Greys” by his SFB company mate Myles Thatcher, Di Lanno shows silky, fluent dancing. But here, the choreography substitutes intricate entwining and leg splitting lifts for romantic passion, and they’re too busy with physical manipulation even to visually acknowledge one another. Sylvie’s white leotard by Yumiko Takeshima is delicately embroidered with a feathery, swan-like design, but her tiny briefs expose what a tutu softens. He wears a pedestrian blue-gray jersey and leg-hugging trousers.

Dawson’s duet for lanky Sebastian Kloborg and petite Kochetkova, “At the End of the Day,” set to modern classical music by Szymon Brzòska, is a daring display of wafting his partner overhead and swooping her around him like a toreador’s cape in a series of lifts and carries that reinforce her magical weightlessness and his surprising muscular power, considering his slim physique. 

“Tué” is the solo Marco Goecke made and costumed to a selection of vocal and instrumental songs. Tall, limber Jacoby begins with her hands fluttering overhead then becoming like weapons wielded by lightning fast arms, sprouting from her muscularly articulated back. The costume is black pantaloons and a strapless, backless corset on top that binds her like armor, exposing her alabaster neck, arms, and spine, and brunette hair pulled back, austerely. The relentless persistence of her speed and precision, like a voguer on speed, make her a captivating creature.

In “Degunino” by Spanish artist Marcos Morau – set to the song “Oh Heavenly King” by Alexander Kneifel – Kochetkova in a transparent mesh body suit, designed by Morau with strategic patches to cover breasts and crotch, shows off her astonishing flexibility and unwavering control in a mysterious solo in shadowy lighting also designed by Morau. Her body bends and twists into poses that sometimes suggest comic characters – a model, a chorus girl – she hops on her toes and struts archly. In an extended passage on the floor, she splits, arches, and contorts like some alien insect, then finally, she transforms into a lost soul in search of an elusive solace. 

The evening closes with the world premiere of “Masha Machine” by Jerome Bel, whose “dance” liberates the dancer from her classical roots by inserting brief video clips of her dancing the Sugar Plum Fairy and Giselle, into the animated projection of a long text message conversation with him, talking about everything from her new career plans to her Christmas celebrations to a potential collaboration with him to the rigors of ballet academy training in Russia to how alternately painful and joyful dancing can be from day to day to how every ballet is hard on a different body part – “Swan Lake,” the left leg (those 32 fouétte turns), “Sleeping Beauty,” the right (the long Rose Adagio balance), Don Quixote, all that jumping – to a discussion  of whether dancing the roles of people who are dead has mitigated her fear of dying. It hasn’t. 

The scrolling messages pause periodically to let us read the relevant parts and laugh at the incongruity of the juxtapositions. When the projection ends, Kochetkova appears onstage in a follow spot, dressed in practice clothes and bulky foot warmers, to give us a sample of her exquisite port de bras that ends in a quintessentially balletic pose, arms reaching out in fourth position, as the lights fade into blackness.

"Я ❤️ Дегунино" - вот такую штуку установили в московском спальном микрорайоне Бусиново около пешеходного моста к метро "Ховрино". Сейчас там вовсю благоустраивают территорию, лавочки поставили, фонари, асфальт положили.
