a few words...

sigh…I think it needs to be clarified that everyone who watches degrassi watches for a different reason. over the past week, I have seen some of my posts being screenshot and mocked on twitter by a group of girls on here who I will refrain from mentioning who also have no idea who I am and I have seen one of those girls post on tumblr that hetero females who support triles, were likely also the ones who referred to her as a “dyke” in highschool. so…I completely understand if you relate to miles and adore him more than any other character on the show. I am fully aware that tristan is biphobic towards miles and no amount of insecurity justifies it and it needs to be fixed as soon as possible. what I don’t understand, is mocking, belittling or assuming that everyone who likes a character that you don’t for whatever reason, is a bad person or that assuming that liking a character is equivalent to supporting everything they do or say, on a show like degrassi. 

there are parts of tristan that I like and there are parts of tristan that I don’t like. there are parts of tristan that I can relate to and there are parts of tristan that I would never relate to. I have struggled with body issues like tristan did. I still feel that insecurity of wanting to be loved and feeling like it was pointless to even try to find someone to like me for me. I was and still am partially the hopeless romantic that tristan is. there are plenty of parts of myself that I share with him and I won’t be shamed for liking those parts of him because those are parts of who make me, me. regarding miles, I love miles. I don’t relate to him very much but he is an amazing character. he is a troubled soul and he has grown into someone with amazing potential. of course this is the first time that I have revealed anything this personal on here, but I don’t think it is unfair to want to be respected by others even if I didn’t. it is not my intention to place my struggles/insecurities above yours. 

as I mentioned before, everyone has their valid reasons to like/care for this show and these characters. I ask to be respected and not harassed for having an opinion or feeling that you may not agree with. I ask that we take into consideration everyone on here. I apologize if me liking triles, is indicative of disrespect towards you because it was not my intention, especially if it is taken personally. however, I do feel hurt by what those girls did and they know who they are. I find it very ironic that they are being malicious when they have had their share of being ridiculed in the past. it makes me sad that you were taunted and treated poorly over your sexuality, however it does not justify you treating me poorly at all because I was not that person who did that to you and I wouldn’t be that person, despite what you think. I am very much tired, as you are. I am just as much annoyed as you are. I am just as pissed off as you are. I don’t know what else to add to this other than that I want the judgement to stop. I don’t want to feel like I am a bad person over liking a character that I, at times, relate to.

Lola and Miles's height difference is killing me

meet RASHA ZUABI, the SIXTEEN year old junior at degrassi. she’s a member of THE OUTCASTS, and sometimes gets mistaken for DALIA YEGAVIAN.

about RASHA:

When Rasha first came to Degrassi, she had no interest in being part of the groups. It was thanks to Imogen, however, that she realized the outcasts were like one big family. It didn’t take much convincing for Rasha to announce that she would join the outcasts.

Wanting to make a name for herself, Rasha not only joined drama club, but Degrassi TV. She has interest in covering the story behind Tristan and Fiona battling to have their plays be approved by Simpson. On top of that, Rasha is constantly looking for the next story to tell. She loves getting in front of the camera and speaking her mind.

Unfortunately due to her honest approach, Rasha has made enemies with several legacies in the process. They feel that she has somewhat of a skewed and biased opinion. Goldi in particular is so convinced that she can change Rasha’s mind, that it’s one of the only things she talks about when the two are together.

connections:

imogen moreno- crush: Rasha is one of the few people who have managed to make Imogen smile since the crash. The two girls worked together in drama club, and Imogen fell for her instantly. They spent every day after school together, share snacks and sing musicals backstage. Rasha has a mutual crush on Imogen, but both girls are oblivious that the other has any feelings.

goldi nahir- housemate/secret friend: Goldi and Rasha live together, since Goldi’s parents agreed to welcome in Syrian refugees. Unfortunately for Rasha, Goldi seems to have an agenda. She is convinced she can get Rasha to ditch the outcasts and join the legacies. Rasha knows that Goldi has good intentions, but she is growing tired of Goldi trying to convince her. Neither girl have told others they live together, due to their different social groups.

jack jones- enemies: Rasha isn’t the type to like having enemies, but things with Jack have been sour since day one. Rasha initially flirted with Jack, but Jack quickly brushed the other girl off, due to seeing her talk badly about some of her friends on Degrassi TV. When Rasha asked what was wrong, Jack made a scene in the hallway, claiming that Rasha was a liar. They stopped being friends immediately and fight every time they come in contact.

fiona coyne- ex fling: When Fiona first came to the outcasts, she hooked up with Rasha. The two shared several kisses, before Rasha ended things. Fiona wanted to keep their hook up a secret, still dealing with her new reputation, but Rasha wasn’t willing to oblige. Tensions are now high between the two.

Degrassi S3 Reactions Part 2b - Eps 1-5

I’m super wordy. I don’t apologize for it though.

This post will cover Maya, Shay, Goldi, Frankie, Rasha, and all of HugeIfTrue

Maya

The lack of Maya in Ep 1 is probably the strongest part of her plot in 1-5? Like, her being on screen sells her numbness, but the absence when she doesn’t have a plot makes it clear she really is drowning in her own darkness through all of S3. That ‘if you stare into the abyss the abyss stares back’ idea is there when she’s on screen, and terrifying when she’s off.

Notes: - Maya’s lack of affect is pretty clear, but I wish someone picked up on it during the first five eps. She interacts with everyone that should see her nose diving, but nobody catches it. - Maya’s phone is the best visual for her, given the thing is clearly broken but she hasn’t stopped using it. She’s also the only one from the crash with a phone like it. Setting her apart. - I wish they had the time, when she mentioned Cam and Adam, to mention Katie’s OD. It just adds another layer to ‘maybe this is me’ mindset. Still, mentioning Cam and Adam had to wait until she was so far gone she couldn’t fight for herself. It was, to me, the first sign she’d given up.

Shay

I kinda really hope for Shay’s theme is going all the way into body dismorphia of some kind? Her every plot has been about finding her body weird, disgusting, or embarrassing. She’s incredibly insecure but we haven’t been given much reason she thinks that outside of the period plot.

Notes: - Frankie is super unhelpful but also means well. She basically reinforces everything Shay is feeling at each turn without meaning to. - Wow is Esme evil, but given Tiny’s treatment of Esme, I still don’t fully blame her.

Goldi

So S1-S2 Goldi didn’t have an obvious clash between her views and her beliefs, which I was expecting having our lead feminist be a Muslim. But S3 did reinforce something I missed... Goldi doesn’t know how to compromise. With the gamers it went under the radar because Hunter was HILARIOUSLY unsympathetic, but Goldi didn’t offer any middle ground to him. And here we know why she’s so bad at that.

Goldi views every hesitation, every battle unfought, as giving up a part of herself. As she views her religion as just that ‘her religion.’ So she can’t see why her views on homosexuality are wrong, without viewing it as a betrayal to herself. Which sucks, and we’ve seen it before with Becky. And it was a perfect first hint to Rasha’s sexuality when they had this debate.

Note: - I love the reveal Goldi is sorta... friendless. Not that it’s a good thing, just sad. And says as much about her unrelenting nature as it does about the school’s general anti-Muslim air. She’s strong, but she uses that strength poorly and it’s made her alone. - Oh look, she and Baaz do know each other existed. I for one was worried the two’s parents had lied to each other and said they were an only child.

Frankie

The other half of the ‘immature girl duo.’ Where Shay doesn’t get the desires, Frankie does but has a boy who is basically using her as a security blanket. And their relationship is a mess. I mean ‘end of Eclare’ mess or ‘end of Matlingsworth’ mess. Frankie doesn’t trust Jonah, Jonah certainly doesn’t trust Frankie. We get an answer to this in the second half but all the set-up for this mess is here and it is... great, but hard to watch.

Notes: - Lola and Shay being at odds with each other was great. It really defined where all three girls were emotionally (Lola being, furthest along, Shay being in last, and Frankie being... somewhere in the middle.) - I love the sibling moments between the twins. Even if that is more of a later in the season thing.

Rasha

Rasha is wonderful. Full stop. She’s given a ton to work with making her both unique, fun, and very involved in the season as a whole. Even if she’s low key in 1-5. I enjoyed her putting Zig in his place in class, then turning around and putting Goldi in her place when she was being just as unbending about the shades of gray in an issue. And that wasn’t even her plot!

Her own plot she is our second play at the ‘what is gender’ topic, after Yael’s issue with ‘girly youtube’ with the Gamers. Rasha’s plot is all about the fact that some things are universal, and it plays up Miles’s nature that he accepts her statement and enjoys her read (even if the play has to be him and Lola because Tristan). Also the fact that she wasn’t slighted by Miles’s obvious choice just adds to her greatness.

Notes: - Zoe being around, but not all in, was a good mid-point before what we know has to happen in 6-10. - The culture clash moments are cute, and a good tool to remind people she’s a refugee without actively having her carry a banner on it.

HugeIfTrue

Hey what gives, why does this ep get its own topic while every other ep was broad character strokes? Because this plot is a complicated tangled mess of interwoven threads that can’t just be untangled. And it is, honestly to me, the strongest ep in the whole season writing wise (emotion wise you know what ep is the strongest). They manage to weave several errant plots so they all clash at once and every character has an agenda and it is PERFECT.

Lola wants time with her friends, she needs it. She has been pushed to the side by pretty much everyone (but ‘too cute to be evil’ Miles) and it shows. And the fact that she doesn’t even get warned before Jonah, Tiny, and the Rest come over is clearly hurting her.

I like that Tiny is the one that builds her back up from her insecurities, I also hate it. Because it means Frankie and Shay didn’t. And really that should have been their doing. Instead Shay’s insecurity makes everything worse.

Shay of course is not ready for sex, she’s weird about her body and about doing things with Tiny and the fact that Frankie wants to bone Jonah just... Shay doesn’t know how to deal. She also doesn’t know how to deal with the fact that Tiny was with Lola.

...and we don’t really get that resolved, she just, is clearly not into the sex. We also haven’t resolved the other thing which was why we didn’t get Shiny in season 1. Shay is embarrassed by Tiny’s past, which was in full effect tonight.

Frankie is all ready to do the thing, she wants to. She’s not there yet, but she doesn’t understand why she isn’t there yet. Jonah also doesn’t accurately explain the issue with her, or really take her feelings into account.

But Frankie can bond with Miles over setting stuff on fire. Now Hunter just needs to join the party...

Esme is there to start trouble, probably because she seems fairly unfond of all of Zig’s friends and their respective girls. She does her job well.

Grace didn’t ask for any of this. Honestly she didn’t deserve it either.

And we got to find out Hunter has a huge dong. Enjoy that revelation.

Miles meanwhile was just there, but his entire scene with Lola (before and after sex) was gold. His fears were dissuaded by how... on top of her emotions Lola is. She made a choice, which had consequences, but she didn’t put more weight on it than it needed (Frankie) or ignore his feelings and his individuality (Shay). It was messy, and sweet, and Lola is a low speed collision of bluntness, and probably the most emotionally stable first time in Degrassi history.

Just think on that for a moment.

And that wraps up the easy half of the season. Next things get really interesting.
