This volume is thicc! Dungeon Meshi Thursday!!!!!!

Ok there is a lot of tension between Chilchuck and Izutsumi, I am hoping in the future they will get along better but for now I can see them butting heads more. But during the fight with the Ice Golem, they do know how to put their differences aside and work together to get the job done.

At first, I felt sorry for Izutsumi, they wanted to be change back to their normal form. Also, I was reading more in The Adventurer’s Bible, understanding their back story a bit more, and I was shocked on what I found out on the part of who placed the curse on Izutsumi. (I will do a separate post on The Adventurer’s Bible; I highly recommend the book.)

Izutsumi seems to have a hard life that leads to major trust issues and will only help if it benefits her and her goals. But she has the pallet of a child that refuses to try new things and will throw a fit if she doesn’t get what she wants.

It also makes me wonder what her life was when she was with Shuro’s group, I mean we do see Izutsumi and the other ladies interact and it does seem that Izutsumi pushes stuff she doesn’t want to do/want on too Tade (even though when Tade fell off the roof, no one asked her to go up and do that chore, she just wanted to be useful.)

Now some of the middle chapters, I am now greatly worried about the group The Canaries. This group seems to have an impressive resume that even Kabru knows and has deeply affected him.

This whole group is elves, and from previous volumes they are looking for the secret of eternal life. That it seems that elves take over dungeons when they get out of hand, and from what Tansu has said that the elves want this dungeon back.

When I got the village part of the volume, I was surprised to see how a village managed to survive in this dungeon for so long. (I know that it’s Sissel magic that is keeping them alive.) But I pity them when they just farm to farm and do not really enjoy the product of their work. Like their sense of taste is so dull and with magic they have no reason to eat.

(Good lord if I couldn’t taste food I would be devastated, I love food and seeing something that you love like sushi or pizza and not being able to taste the cheese sauce and crust and spices, I would be beyond depressed.)

With that aside, these chapters we got a lot of information about Sissel, how he came to Degal kingdom, how he got into magic. How dedicated he is to try to find King Degal.

When Laois’s group got into the village, we meet Yaad, the grandson of King Degal and he is ruling the village they are in currently. Ever since Degal left for the surface, there has been a rift between the surviving Degal family and Sissel.

Yaad explains a prophecy about a person with a winged sword who would come and stop the mad mage and become the ruler of the dungeon. However, they need the help of a winged lion (that is their god that Degal’s people worshipped). But, Sissel has it locked away in the lower levels of the dungeon.

So, Laois has a choice to make.

At end of this chapter after Yaad helps the group leave, we see Sissel asking in a very scary way who was Yaad talking too.

This part makes me worried for Yaad.

The last chapters of the book…. *cue hysterical crying* POOOR SENSHI!!!!!!!!!!!! *uncontrollable sobbing* Oh lord his back story!!! His fear!!!! My god this must have tortured him for so long!!!!

You never see Senshi cry!!!!

Now (*Dries tears*) I do have some conflicted feelings with Laois in this chapter.

I can see where he is coming from, (and maybe its just me being overprotective of Senshi) but when discussing the death of Senshi’s old group, I do wish both Chilchuck and Laois exercised some tact, like talking in private out of ear shot of Senshi.

Laois is thinking is hard to follow sometimes, let’s eat the griffin and see if it tasted like the one from your past, if does yay you didn’t eat your teammates or oh no this doesn’t taste like that meal so that means I ate a team-mate.

However, I did like what Chilchuck said to Laois, that he really needs to stop. This was what I was talking about in my last post with Shuro and communication skills.

Chilchuck has good communication skills, he will not hesitate to call Laois on things that are delicate.

Though when re-reading the chapter again, I am glad that Senshi had such a great teammate to put Senshi who was at the time the youngest in the group. 

DON’T MAKE SENSHI CRY!!!!!!! My poor heart can’t take it!!!!!!!!

something something abt the comparison of the violence and power of a family unit inflicted on the children and the institutional violence the elves inflict on short lived races. both words used loosely, and i also am on the fence abt like. Whether the power the elves hold over the setting is intended to be institutional. It seems more rooted in the interpersonal well we are older so we just know better. And theres something to be said abt how common infantilization is in colonial rhetoric but i dont think thats what kui was going for. Maybe she was referencing it but i dont think thats the intention of execution if that makes sense. Clearly i lean towards no.

I think it works fantastic w the themes of the work and ties in marcilles conflict w the wider world really well. But w actual critique of systems of power it falls flat. And i think its intended as that w kabrus conflict n i think it does his perspective a disservice that its ultimately framed as more of an interpersonal conflict. Maybe my mind will change on reread tho im struggling to articulate my thoughts here. Like sometimes u gotta respect the scope the work sets out to cover. But im also like idk idk like if ur gonna talk about it i feel u should address the institutional aspect of it more u know.

Tho i dont think dungeon meshi is out there questioning the status quo and is more like. W a new generation of ppl who can listen n learn together, within this system, we can do better. Which is fair if naive, u know. But its a fictional work we can believe…. We can pretend… just like we can pretend feudalism was fine* (complicated opinion im not getting into ). Price of entry. I do think its kinda tragic that the best we had in our imagination was laios becoming king after the interpersonal mess between the royal family led to an entire continent of ppl not involved in this nonsense being immortalized for 1000 years. Like idk i dont think we should have a monarchy after that….. but i get what laios arc was abt leadership n stepping up w being the son of a village chief etc etc was abt and the narrative parallels between laios n falin as siblings n degal and thistle. But im just not sold. This got off topic. Its an interesting comparison that i find really clever in some ways and in others im like …? Abt.

Thistle as- Joyce-Armstrong!

Joyce-Armstrong was clearly good friends with Lieutenant Myrtle, and he was not satisfied with the explanation of Myrtle's death. Like our intrepid protag, Thistle is rich, capable, determined, and off-putting! He wants to know what really happened to Degal in this au, taking him to the air.

King Degal as(please let these aviators not be based on real people)- Lieutenant Myrtle!

Thistle in cannon is searching for Degal alive, in this story, Degal probably learned to fly with thistle and they became like brothers. When Degal fell from his plane without a head after a series of similar accidents with other aviators, Thistle was not satisfied with the explanation given, they are convinced something more sinister is afoot, past the point of reason, obsessed with the circumstances of Degal's death.

Falin as- Perkins, the mechanic!

Thistle saw how good Falin was with machinery and planes in a situation having to do with whatever the main gang is doing in early 1920s aviator/investigative reporter land. He employed her under much duress to be his mechanic cuz he needs only the best of the best quality plane and plane service to make his journey to the upper atmosphere. Her friends and family are a bit concerned, but glad she has such a cushy job now!

The Island Lord as- The farmer, Mathew Dodd

Island lord owns island where dungeon is. Farmer owns farm where mystery is found. Nuff said.

Kabru as- The Narrator!

A tale requiring a deep understanding of all those involved and some good ole fashioned investigating/ snooping? I admit I was tempted to make Laois the narrator as it's about monsters being discovered, but come on! A dramatic tale of adventure and woe designed to earn the people of a new threat most would disregard? Kabru literally made one in cannon.

Laois as- James Flynn, agricultural laborer!

idk man. Back then farmer was kinda a basic job and we all know Laois is kinda a loser. (No flack to farmers). I was originally gonna give this to Kabru since he's the mystery investigating guy and James Flynn is the one who finds the site but like, idk. He made a better narrator.

Marcelle as- Dr. T. H Antherthon!

She probably has a phd. Only problem is why she gave that book to eh Canaries. Perhaps they took it from her? Like some of the chapters where she meets them (avoiding saying spoilers)

The Canaries as- The London Aero Club!

Idk man. Fancy organization that oversees the aviators of this land. Canary core.

I only put characters in roles I thought would suit them. Mabye somewhere along the way drifting Laois ended up employed at a farm, maybe he's saving up enough money to hire a new mechanic after his sister got poached by Thistle, who knows. There ain't a lot of main characters cuz there ain't a lot of roles and I ain't about to put someone somewhere they ain't suited to. Anyways the demon is those giant purple things. Hehe.

Anyways go read horror of the heights it's a great short horror story. Also does this imply Senshi is just chilling in the clouds? Yes. Yes it does. Don't ask how he's busy drying out air jellies.
