One of the things that annoys me most about so many sustainable ag/homestead/whatever people is how out of touch a lot of their solutions are. Someone from a local natural landscaping company just posted something about buckthorn control that was like "Why would anyone ever resort to chemical control? Just continuously defoliate it for 2 years, then pull it up!" I've also seen people seriously advocate that farms should switch to hand-weeding rather than tillage.

Like, the sheer amount of labor? And who? From where? At what cost?

TCW Rewatch: “Defenders of the Peace” (S1, E14)

Yes, it's been over a year since I last did one of these. It's been a hell of a time, people, but I'm coming back round the mountain on Star Wars.

So, when we last left our intrepid heroes, they were stranded on Mygeeto and Anakin came close to pulling a Kanan Jarrus. Alright, then.

While recovering, Anakin, Ahsoka, Aayla, Rex, and co. catch sight of a Separatist warship entering the Lurmen colony, headed up by the comically evil Lok Durd (who may as well have been twirling his non-existent mustache as he bloviated to the Lurmen leader).

This isn't what's really interesting about this episode, however. What's fascinating is the talk about neutrality in the war and pacifism, in regards to the Lurmen.

First of all, I love Anakin's assertion that if the Lurmen want to remain neutral, that's their business. Fast-forward three years and he's already graduated to training terrorist cells on Onderon.

And that's what really struck me in this episode - is that if you compare the Jedi and the war then with how they ended up...you can see how the Order itself entered a downward trajectory they partially got dragged into through Sidious's manipulations, partially because of their adherence to older Codes and politics (more on this in a moment).

I think that Aayla's comment that if the Separatists spot the Jedi, the Lurmens will be slaughtered awful because the Lurmens were going to be slaughtered anyway. And I'm not sure if this a comment on the futility of not taking sides in a war or if Jedi non-intervention was literally doing no one but the politicians on Coruscant any good, but it's certainly striking.

Speaking of the Separatists - I had to cackle during this exchange.

You can't tell from the screen grab, but the battledroid meets Lok Durd's proclamation that Dooku is going to majorly promote him with the most sarcastic response, and you know what - that battledroid knew Dooku better than Durd.

And this fascinates me because Dooku was in on Sidious's plan. They needed a long, protracted war to erode trust in the Jedi and Sidious needed time to groom Anakin. The defoliator weapon, while powerful, was clumsy and unwieldy in its deployment, and rather easily sabotaged, as Anakin shows us later on.

This makes me wonder about the Separatist weapons development program, which Dooku had a not-insignificant hand in funding, and if Dooku ever had to handicap his own projects so they wouldn't be too successful too quickly (and if he ever stowed away some research for himself and his own causes, should he eventually usurp Sidious). Now Lok Durd doesn't seem like to type of being to check every contingency, and unfortunately for Dooku, he's forced to work with the likes of Lok Durd (no wonder he wants to get Kenobi on his side) and just - I really want to know more about what was going behind the scenes with the Separatists during the war. Both the systems and beings who whole-heartedly wanted change and the machinations and politics from that side of things.

Anyway, Dooku rant aside, Anakin gives this extremely telling order:

Foreshadowing, much? In that Anakin is using the droid order and, uh...well, we know what he becomes later.

Speaking of foreshadowing, the Lurmen leader is quite reticent to give any aid to the Jedi, and I think it's fascinating to compare these two scenes:

Again, it really speaks to how the war has dragged everyone down. The same line, spoken to Jedi - once by a peaceful species trying to avoid conflict (who were saved by the Jedi). And then later, by a drug and crime lord who helped kill Syfo-Dyas and whose favor two Jedi were attempting to curry.

After witnessing the defoliator in action, the Jedi switch from leaving the Lurmen to the tender mercies of the Separatists to direct involvement. Anakin states, "there is a difference between pulling innocents into a war and leaving them to extinction."

And isn't that quandry of the years? When can the Jedi intervene? They don't on Mandalore as it's a civil issue, not a galactic issue. They don't on Felucia because it's a Hondo issue, not a Separatist issue. They do on Onderon because it's a Separatist issue, albeit grudgingly.

And before Anakin and co. witnessed the defoliator in action, they were ready to leave the Lurmen, possibly to be slaughtered even without the weapon. So yes, a slaughter, but also - they needed to deal with a major military weapon.

Along interesting foreshadowing in this episode is this, which is a LITTLE ON THE NOSE, FILONI:

I mean, this is essentially a stand-in for the Order. The father being Yoda, which is strong-willed and set in tradition. The Lurmen being raised in a strict code, not always agreeing with it, and still adhering to it anyway. And what happens when they break that Code? The Lurmen survive. What happens to the Jedi in the analogous situation?

While this arc in and of itself is pretty forgettable, the sheer amount of foreshadowing and mirroring makes it worth the rewatch.

Also, even though the Jedi saved the Lurmens from immediate destruction, in the end, the Republic warships do arrive on the horizon and the Lurmen are likely absorbed under Republic protection. Which...

For an arc that in and of itself is pretty forgettable, the sheer amount of foreshadowing and mirroring makes it worth the rewatch, not to mention the subtle ways it casts some doubt on Jedi and Republic intervention, as shown above.

But mostly this episode is worth it due to Dooku's hilarious look of Utter Disgust:

Okay I don’t want to toot my own horn or anything but I gotta pat myself on the back for foreshadowing Hopper’s past in the Army during Vietnam (Chapter 11 of my fic Stand By Me, ch published in Feb 2021!)...

“The world’s changing so fast,” Joyce observed in a moment of clarity one evening in early August. She sat cross-legged on the couch, anxious over a bowl of cereal and the news with Walter Cronkite.

A riot had broken out in Los Angeles, and one of the CBS reporters was there on location, right in the thick of it. Protests and looting and screams of righteous anger filled the living room, blasting through the speakers.

Hopper walked over to the television with a scowl on his face, dropped to his knees, and turned the dial to more real-life nightmares: newsreel of Vietnam, the USAF dropping defoliant on unsuspecting villages, while the newscaster discussed the use of Rainbow Herbicides with a General in the studio.

“So, you’re saying there’s no chance of toxicity in a human population with overuse of these chemicals?”

“We can assure the public here at home that there is no cause for concern. The chemicals used are intended to kill plants, making it easier for our soldiers to spot their targets in heavy foliage and avoid killing civilians…"

Hopper quickly switched the channel again, this time to the Andy Griffith’s show instead. In one click, he had saved them, shutting all the chaos of the world out of their happy little home. If only it could be that easy.

NASA Finds Amazon Drought Leaves Long Legacy of Damage

NASA - ICESat-2 Mission patch. August 10, 2018 A single season of drought in the Amazon rainforest can reduce the forest's carbon dioxide absorption for years after the rains return, according to a new study published in the journal Nature. This is the first study to quantify the long-term legacy of an Amazon drought. A research team from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, and other institutions used satellite lidar data to map tree damage and mortality caused by a severe drought in 2005. In years of normal weather, the undisturbed forest can be a natural carbon "sink," absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it puts back into it. But starting with the drought year of 2005 and running through 2008 -- the last year of available lidar data -- the Amazon basin lost an average of 0.27 petagrams of carbon (270 million metric tons) per year, with no sign of regaining its function as a carbon sink.

Scientists estimate that it absorbs as much as one-tenth of human fossil fuel emissions during photosynthesis. "The old paradigm was that whatever carbon dioxide we put up in [human-caused] emissions, the Amazon would help absorb a major part of it," said Sassan Saatchi of NASA's JPL, who led the study. But serious episodes of drought in 2005, 2010 and 2015 are causing researchers to rethink that idea. "The ecosystem has become so vulnerable to these warming and episodic drought events that it can switch from sink to source depending on the severity and the extent," Saatchi said. "This is our new paradigm." Drought from the Ground For scientists on the ground in the Amazon, "The first thing we see during a drought is that the trees may lose their leaves," Saatchi said. "These are rainforests; the trees almost always have leaves. So the loss of leaves is a strong indication the forest is stressed." Even if trees eventually survive defoliation, this damages their capacity to absorb carbon while under stress. Observers on the ground also notice that droughts tend to disproportionately kill tall trees first. Without adequate rainfall, these giants can't pump water more than 100 feet up from their roots to their leaves. They die from dehydration and eventually fall to the ground, leaving gaps in the forest canopy far overhead.

But any observer on the ground can monitor only a tiny part of the forest. There are only about hundred plots used for research and a few tower sites for long-term monitoring of the Amazon forests. "The detailed measurements in these sites are extremely important for understanding forest function, but we can never use them to say what this giant ecosystem is doing in a timely fashion," Saatchi said. To do that, he and his colleagues turned to satellite data. Drought from Space The research team used high-resolution lidar maps derived from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System aboard the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat). These data reveal changes in canopy structure, including leaf damage and gaps. The researchers developed a new method of analysis to convert these structural changes into changes in aboveground biomass and carbon. TITLE

A “next of kin” (NOK) is a person’s closest living blood relative or relatives. It is a legal definition in the United States (where Conor lives). According to legal systems, in cases of medical emergency, the next of kin may participate in medical decisions when their relative is incapable of such. This term is not used anywhere in the song itself, except for the title. Its nature, related to legal issues (jargon), may indicate that the author wants to separate himself from the issues presented in the song (death, loss, hopelessness) by using a term which doesn’t necessarily have any emotional connotations in order not to feel sadness himself. He may also use it ironically to point out that people, when in difficult, life-challenging situations (such as death of a beloved person), are limited to the system and its bureaucratic procedures, having no room left for sentiment, nostalgia and pain.

VERSE 1

The speaker admits to seeing a (supposedly) car crash on the interstate highway which moved him deeply to the point he couldn’t get rid of the feeling. The crash must’ve been fatal, with certain person(s) dead as a result, since he ironically points out that the dead person’s relative (next of kin?) must be notified, as restricted in a database. The speaker now reveals that he is, in fact, to notify the relative. He again admits that he feels uneasy as he doesn’t want to call that person nor inform them. Did he know the deceased? Does he know the relative? Or is he just as empathetic? He tells the relative that he has bad news and asks them to sit down to not fall unconscious (possibly). It’s worth to notice that the mentioned “interstate” sounds similar when pronounced to “intestate” which refers to the condition of the estate of a person who dies without having made a will or other declaration.

VERSE 2

We now switch to a different scenery. We’re presented with an image of a bathrobe hanging on somebody’s bedroom door. It belonged to a woman who’s clearly a year gone by the time. Her closest one, possibly a relative, a man (a husband? partner? father? brother? A partner more than anyone else, given the image of a shared bedroom) buried her body by a sycamore, a tree which in Catholicism symbolizes clarity (Zacchaeus climbing it to see Jesus clearly among a crowd of people). The tree is a symbol of place in the lives of Catholics where they’re able to have a clear vision of Jesus, their savior. In Egyptian Texts, two sycamore trees stood at the eastern gate of Heaven. Between the trees the Sun God, Ra, showed himself each morning. It is believed that a sycamore tree and its valuable wood (often used to carve sarcophagi, or coffins) was a symbol of protection for the Egyptians during the journey from life to death. I think it’s safe to say that the author could’ve had both symbolic connotations in mind. He tells us that the man, grieving his wife’s death, buried her under the sycamore. By “the” & the following line we know it’s not a random one, but possibly a tree growing in their garden or somewhere near home, since the man wants to “keep his wife/partner close”, aka wants to have “the best view” to visit her grave often and to have it protected, near. We’re later told that “it”, the man’s partner’s death was devastating to him both emotionally and physically. It “made him old” which may refer to him changing physically (people’s hair, for example, can turn gray within seconds of a traumatic experience) or/and mentally (loss of a loved one is a life-changing experience which provides people with both trauma and knowledge). The man tries to “rebuild” something. His heart? His body? His life? His faith? but he can’t do it, because it deteriorates instead. He’s told by people that that’s the routine of life, that’s what happens - death is real and will affect you, everyone experiences loss, you can’t do anything about it, but he doesn’t want to deal with it that way, he’s unable to come to terms with it.

VERSE 3

Now the speaker addresses the listener/reader. He tells us - “you” - that you can’t perform onstage when you drink too much. When a “star” is born something needs to die - he paraphrases the issue presented e.g. in Andersen’s tale “The Little Match Girl” where the protagonist is told by her grandmother that when somebody dies - a star falls from the sky. The speaker, possibly the author himself, knows the difficulty of being a known artist - drinking problems, the possible loss of one’s true identity which needs to “die” in order for their new image - “a star” to emerge, to please the audience. It doesn’t only need to refer to a musician/artist’s fate though, because one doesn’t need to be a singer to “perform” aka present, carry out, fulfill or accomplish anything. This verb may refer to any actions one can take, including the most basic ones. “Get too drunk” = make yourself unstable so you can’t do anything right. One thing also has to end in order for something else (sometimes better) to start. For us, for the speaker, for the author. For everyone. Later, the speaker clearly shows us his own perspective on the issues as he admits to having “spread his anger like Agent Orange”. Now, Agent Orange is a defoliant, most notably used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War which caused major health problems for anybody who was exposed to it. By “spreading his anger” like a chemical the speaker confesses that he was open with his negative emotion in a toxic, contaminating and damaging way, to himself and other people, probably. He then admits that he did randomly, against the better judgment, as being “indiscriminate”, just like Agent Orange affecting the lives of Vietnamese people. He talks about how he met Lou Reed and Patti Smith (both valid counter-culture icons of the 70s, musicians and poets, self-taught and independent, charismatic) which didn’t have any crucial impact on him anyway. He thinks that yet another loss - of innocence, made him indifferent already. Also, you should never meet your heroes.

VERSE 4

Who’s a “she” mentioned at the beginning of the first line? That’s possibly the trickiest line of them all. A partner? A girlfriend? A mother? The aforementioned Innocence? She’s definitely known to the speaker and has the edge over him by “winning the fight”, possibly an argument or a game (like poker) by “calling his bluff” i.e. challenging the speaker to reveal his real intentions (like a card) to unmask him and show his weakness. “She” is smart and skilled. The speaker, as a result, runs away and notices the night has already begun. It is hot, too which can be unusual to some of the listeners since there’s no more sun at night thus the heat decreases. He points out that he has a lighter which doesn’t seem to work and admits that he shouldn’t smoke anyway. The lighter may symbolize the urge or possibility to do nasty things which never seem to work thus it’s better for the speaker to not continue on this path. He says he’s already on his way, “free to leave” as though he can go away already, not restrained nor limited anymore. He walks down the Bowery, fast. The Bowery is a street and neighborhood in New York City. The area was infamous for the number of low-brow concert halls, brothels, pawn shops and flophouses, welcoming all those considered outcasts or degenerates. This line can make the “she”-problem clearer then by adding more possible interpretations . A “she” can be a prostitute, an opponent in illegal poker game, maybe. The speaker cries and through his tears, yet another obstacle, he can’t see the road/path/way before him but he admits and assures us that he managed to get back home; to what’s familiar, close, near, comfortable and considered safe, known.

SUMMARY:

Conor Oberst’s “Next of Kin” tells a story of loss and acknowledgement of it. A story of feeling lost and inadequate, nervous and anxious. A story of failing at living with pain. A story of losing innocence, purity and dignity. A story of understanding loss, facing up to it and finding a way to what is always there, sometimes abandoned and neglected - home. Our own sensible selves.

What Star Wars: Visions Has in Common With Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli

The beauty of the natural world and its spiritual elements have long been popular subjects for anime, and in the new short film anthology Star Wars: Visions that translates to rich forests and bringing life to once barren ground. With its emphasis on how characters affect the environments around them, Visions touches on both the history of anime and an idea that has been present but muted in most Star Wars stories: that the evil of the Empire goes hand-in-hand with resource exploitation and greed.

Naturally, anime is an art style — developed in Japan and with a wide range of inspirations behind it — not a single genre. You can find anime films and TV shows espousing and glorifying a wide range of philosophies, from the green of the trees to the virtues of guns. But some of the most successful examples have included the former.

Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, the director and studio behind perhaps the most well-known anime films in the west, make the association between the style and environmental messages clear. Princess Mononoke directly depicts a fight between the denizens of the forest and the humans who have been clearcutting it. My Neighbor Totoro romanticizes a countryside and forest filled with Shinto-inspired creatures as well as real-world shrines and practices. Other popular anime, like the Moribito series (based on the novels of the same name) or Mushishi, also focus on nature as a source of spirituality, if not always safety.

Star Wars, itself inspired in part by Japanese films, addresses this indirectly but thoroughly. While the heroes tend to be visually associated with earth tones, sacred places, and magical trees, the villains wear metal and stark colors. The heroes are the underdogs, after all: the villains have the technological upper hand, even if a well-placed missile can destroy a whole battle station.

This is especially obvious in Return of the Jedi, which un-subtly pits the ultra-sterile trappings of the Empire against the raucous Ewoks. While the Empire destroys planets, the Ewoks live in trees and forage from the land. In The Clone Wars, destroying the environment is associated with disaster, like when the Separatists turn their Defoliator on their enemies’ planets or when a mixed Republic and Dug project disturbs the Zillo Beast from its underground lair. The Mandalorian makes this clear in the season two episode “The Jedi,” itself heavily inspired by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa; the Empire’s presence seems to be draining the planet, leaving churned-up mud and dying trees around the town.

The Visions episode that does the most with this theme is “The Village Bride,” which presents a planet where people have a home-grown understanding of the Force. “Magina,” or the Force, is connected directly to the planet: “You can’t change the river’s flow by casting a stone, but live in harmony with nature, and you’ll change together,” one Jedi says. The visuals focus on the forest, on how it can be both beautiful and inhospitable to humans. “We are the sky, we are the forest, we are the river,” goes the chant the titular bride and groom perform.

The actual destruction of the world is mostly hidden — an explosion here, a flashback there. Unlike many of the other shorts in the series, the villains are not even reminiscent of the Empire. Instead, they’re bandits using reprogrammed Separatist droids.

Perhaps the most subtle expression of this theme in the episode is the opening scene, where the wanderer Valco activates what appears to be a lightsaber, then proves to be a sensor of some kind. While he’s capable of fighting, he’s also fighting in his own way with research and science.

“T0-B1” also shows that being a hero can mean tending the planet, not necessarily swinging a lightsaber — although the hero certainly does also swing a lightsaber. Inspired by his mentor’s death, the little droid T0-B1 tries to grow plants on the inhospitable desert world. (T0-B1 is a visual echo of Astro Boy, the hero from the 1952 manga, which was later adapted into one of the most successful and familiar anime franchises of all time.) The science is presented as wondrous and soft, and learning how to make the planet green again is the triumph that leads him to gain his lightsaber and become a Jedi Knight.

Of course, the episode also presents him with a convenient villain — he needs to have a martial victory as well as a life-bringing one. Getting to what Yoda said — war not making a person great — is still not quite possible on screen in a franchise built in part on the spectacle of lightsaber battles. But “bringing life back to this planet” is T0-B1’s mission, and his resolution at the end of the episode is that “helping planets…that’s what Jedi do.”

“The Ninth Jedi” evokes some of the industrialization presented as the enemy in other episodes, but doesn’t do as much with it. Throughout the series, we see that kyber crystals, the power source of a lightsaber, are nearly as prized, valuable, and flashy as the laser swords themselves. The process of mining kyber from asteroids in “The Ninth Jedi” is visually arresting, with cords shot into space from machines resembling oil rigs and dragged down to the planet in violent crashes.

The episode doesn’t have much to say about this: the kyber crystals are as noble in good hands as they are sinister in evil ones, with lightsaber colors switching to match each person’s ethical standing. Even so, it’s a cool look at one way to get ahold of this essential piece of Star Wars technology.

One of the best episodes in the series, “Lop and Ochō,” also works the pro-environment theme, both visually and in dialogue. It presents a marked contrast between the industrial Imperial base and the verdant planet around it. Even the hero Lop, a bunny-like alien, is more animalistic than the people around her. But the real insight in this episode comes from the story of why her adopted sister Ochō decides to join the Empire. She explains in a straightforward manner that she’s doing it to help her family: the “Imperial industry” that has “stripped and exploited” the planet will bring “growth and prosperity,” she says.

Ochō’s arguments for how the benefits of the alliance will help the family — money, presumably, and an ever-increasing flow of it — make sense. That’s what’s so honest (and frightening) about them. She wants the same thing Lop does — to keep the family safe — but wants to go about it in a different way. To her — and to the Imperial officer who has been conspiring with her — the family’s “idealism” is just getting in the way. “How are feelings supposed to save our family?” Ochō asks.

I won’t spoil the ending of this one, so suffice it to say the sisters’ clashing opinions are both tested. By the end of the episode, the visuals show primarily the stark metal of the Imperial base, with decorative trees reminding the viewer that the natural world is also part of the conversation. By combining the visual tropes of Star Wars and anime, Visions creates a strong message from both.

Star Wars: Visions executive producer James Waugh and producer Kanako Shirasaki spoke to Den of Geek about this connection in an interview, saying the “unique cultural perspective” lends itself to this theme.

“It comes down to the point of the anthology really, which was a unique cultural perspective and a unique art form expressing Star Wars,” Waugh says. “So much of that type of storytelling [about nature] feels so at home with anime because it permeates a lot of the fiction that comes out of Japanese culture in general.”

But the focus on the environments of Star Wars came naturally, according to Waugh. It wasn’t a mandate.

“There was never a conscious moment where we said we were really leaning into the idea of should we do these stories or not. It was these creators had a vision, each one had a point of view and a story they wanted to tell, and those were the themes they were gravitating towards. And that resonated with Star Wars in the sense that they were powerful, resonant themes that felt a little mythic, and then it was really a matter of getting characters rendered in a way that they had to react to the situation and we had to care for them. But it was totally the byproduct of working with creators who have a very specific point of view and something to say.”

Shirasaki adds, “The creators are heavily influenced from Star Wars at the same time as the rich history of Japanese animation, and Miyazaki and other Japanese storytelling talking about nature and development and all the conflict between these two. So maybe these topics might feel closer to them to tell, and also in a Star Wars setting.”

Miyazaki is often quoted as one of the medium’s most powerful voices on environmentalism. In a 2009 interview, the legendary animator said that this idea needs to go beyond storytelling as well: “Whether we should do something about it or not is something that we need to think about in real life, rather than depicting it in a particular way in the stories on screen.”
