Not ā€œOnly my reading of canon is correctā€ or ā€œInterpretations are subjective and all validā€ but a secret third thing, ā€œMore than one interpretation can be valid but thereā€™s a reason your English teacher had you cite quotes and examples in your papers, you have to have a strong argument that your interpretation is actually supported by the text or it is just wrong and Iā€™m fine with telling you itā€™s wrong, actually.ā€

People need to stop blaming 'parasocial relationships' when it's revealed to the public that a famous person has done something controversial (or even a crime) and the public is upset. 'I can't believe xxx did that!' doesn't always mean that the person who said it has a parasocial relationship with xxx. Usually it's just our faith in humanity, we want to believe that everyone has some basic human decency (especially someone we might admire) and it's only natural to be disappointed when we learn they're a bad person.

As cameras becomes more normalized (Sarah Bernhardt encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use cameras because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by manufacturing companies. I paint not because I want a painting but because I love the process of painting. So even in a future where everyoneā€™s accepted it, Iā€™m never gonna sway on this.
if i have to explain to you that using a camera to take a picture is not the same as using generative ai to generate an image then you are a fucking moron.
#ask me#anon#no more patience for this#i've heard this for the past 2 years#ā€œan object created and controlled by companiesā€ anon the company cannot barge into your home and take your camera away#or randomly change how it works on a whim. you OWN the camera that's the whole POINT#the entire point of a camera is that i can control it and my body to produce art. photography is one of the most PHYSICAL forms of artmakin#you have to communicate with your space and subjects and be conscious of your position in a physical world.#that's what makes a camera a tool. generative ai (if used wholesale) is not a tool because it's not an implement that helps you#do a task. it just does the task for you. you wouldn't call a microwave a ā€œtoolā€#but most importantly a camera captures a REPRESENTATION of reality. it captures a specific irreproducible moment and all its data#read Roland Barthes: Studium & Punctum#generative ai creates an algorithmic IMITATION of reality. it isn't truth. it's the average of truths.#while conceptually that's interesting (if we wanna get into media theory) but that alone should tell you why a camera and ai aren't the sam#ai is incomparable to all previous mediums of art because no medium has ever solely relied on generative automation for its creation#no medium of art has also been so thoroughly constructed to be merged into online digital surveillance capitalism#so reliant on the collection and commodification of personal information for production#if you think using a camera is ā€œautomationā€ you have worms in your brain and you need to see a doctor#if you continue to deny that ai is an apparatus of tech capitalism and is being weaponized against you the consumer you're delusional#the fact that SO many tumblr lefists are ready to defend ai while talking about smashing the surveillance state is baffling to me#and their defense is always ā€œwell i don't engage in systems that would make me vulnerable to ai so if you own an apple phone that's on youā€#you aren't a communist you're just self-centered

wild how people refer to tmi as the incest books when the entire thing was a master plan created by their evil supremasist father to make his children feel like theyā€™re monsters in order to maniplate them into thinking they donā€™t deserve to he happy (ā€œto love is to destroyā€) and should totally stay with him instead and caused everyone involved suffering and pain like babe. i dont think the narrative wants you to like it

Iā€™ll never forget when I was arguing with a person in favor of total prison abolition and I asked them ā€œwhat about violent offenders?ā€ And they said ā€œWell, in a world where prisons have been abolished, weā€™ll have leveled the playing field and everyone will have their basic needs met, and crime wonā€™t be as much of an issue.ā€ And then I was like ā€œokay. Butā€¦no. Because rich people also rape and murder, so it isnā€™t just a poor person thing. So what will we do about that?ā€ And I donā€™t think they answered me after that. Iā€™m ashamed to say I continued to think that the problem was that I simply didnā€™t understand prison abolitionists enough and that their point was right in front of me, and it would click once I finally let myself understand it. It took me a long time to realize that if something is going to make sense, it needs to make sense. If you want to turn theory into Praxis (Iā€™m using that word right donā€™t correct me Iā€™ll vomit) everyone needs to be on board, which mean it all needs to click and it needs to click fast and fucking clear. You need to turn a complex idea into something both digestible and flexible enough to be expanded upon. Every time I ask a prison abolitionist what they actually intend to do about violent crime, I get directed to a summer reading list and a BreadTuber. Itā€™s like a sleight-of-hand trick. Whereā€™s the answer to my question. There it is. No wait, there it is. Itā€™s under this cup. No it isnā€™t. ā€œThereā€™s theory that can explain this better than I can.ā€ As if most theory isnā€™t just a collection of essays meant to be absorbed and discussed by academics, not the average skeptic. ā€œRead this book.ā€ And the book wonā€™t even answer the question. The book tells you to go ask someone else. ā€œOh, watch this so-and-so, she totally explains it better than me.ā€ Why canā€™t you explain it at all? Why did you even bring it up if you were going to point me to someone else to give me the basics that you should probably already know? Maybe Iā€™m just one of those crazy people who thinks that some people need to be kept away from the public for everyoneā€™s good. Maybe that just makes me insane. Maybe not believing that pervasive systemic misogyny could be solved with a UBI and a prayer circle makes me a bad guy. But itā€™s not like womenā€™s safety is a priority anyway. Itā€™s not like there is an objective claim to be made that re-releasing violent offenders or simply not locking them up is deadly.
