Mark Farina Halloween 2015 Live Set

This is a 3-hour audio recording of Mark Farina Halloween 2015 live set recorded in Orange County, California, on October 31, 2015.

Mark F'ing Farina. Easily in the top 5 deep house dj's. Probably in the top three. Maybe in the top 2?

Come on. I've never heard someone deliver such deep funk so consistently. Every. Single. Time.

So this is an interesting recording. It's not from my archive of classic rave recordings, nor something recorded recently. This is the audio counterpart to a live video stream I did all the way back in 2015.

Today, post Covid, the mention of live streaming elicits not even a yawn, we are so desensitized to it by now. For obvious reasons, the real streaming revolution happened 2019-2021. So I consider it a little feather in my cap that Rave Tapes was running good-sounding, multi-cam streams long before the trend took off.

The event? A cozy Halloween party hosted by Swerve Underground, the monthly event hosted by producer/dj Wally Callerio of Dufflebag Recordings and partner/dj 1st Nature. Wally has been a respected producer for years and had the right connections to pull some amazing names down to their Orange County venue, an hour south of Los Angeles. Names like Dereck Carter, Doc Martin, and other titans of the deep house movement.

So when the opportunity came up to do a live video stream of their Halloween party, taking place in a cool bohemian art space, with special guest Mark Farina? Pfft. It was the chance I had been waiting for, lol!

So, miraculously, the whole thing went off almost without a hitch. I say almost because I believe power was cut to the decks at one point. But considering it was a 2+ hour set, we forgot about it almost instantly after power was restored. Otherwise, the internet connection was good, my gear held up. It happened. In fact, here's the video evidence:

So this is the audio to that. While the audio in the YouTube version sounds unbelievably clean, this sounds even better. I finally went back and properly mixed the four audio channels, left-right stereo pair from the dj decks, then left-right stereo pair from the room mic.

It sounds absolutely pristine, if I do say so myself. I had to decide how loud to keep the mic levels vs the feed from the dj mixer. I think I am happy with these levels but I might change my mind and update the file at some point.

The content? Well, it's good ol' reliable Mark Farina. Of course every dj has a "look" and Farina certainly has his trademark glasses and scruffy chin. But man, when you see that familiar visage behind the decks and hear the funky bass line over the system, you know you have nothing to worry about. You know you're in for a good time.

Last time I saw Farina was EDC 2022 Bionic Jungle stage. It was very late Sat night. Actually very early morning Sunday about 4 am. Still dark and trippy.

Saturday. Hump day. People are grinding in more ways than one. And Mark is closing out little Bionic Jungle. I don't mean little in a condescending way. Actually, the inconspicuousness of the stage is what made it so great. It was def an intimate space and you could get right up close to your favorite deep house dj's. My only issue that night was that it wasn't going to yield a complete Rave Tapes recording. Yes, I recorded while I danced there. But knew I was arriving late because of another set, and I knew I was leaving early because I don't like getting stuck in parking. While there may have been an hour of material, the other issue was there was a nasty buzzing coming from some vibrating stage rigging.

So that's probably why I'm mentioning EDC here, because it's a good opportunity to discuss it since there will never be a Rave Tapes recording from that night to link it to.

I guess my point is, be it at Swerve Halloween 2015, EDC 2022, or the other times I've heard Farina play, Farina always, ALWAYS, delivers a top shelf performance.

While I'm always eager to bring these live sets to you for the sake of your listening pleasure, truth be told, I get excited when posting these because in most cases it's the first time I get to have easy SoundCloud access to the mixes, too.

And with this one, I'm over-the-moon thrilled for completely selfish reasons ;)

Entry - IFDB Note: this seems to be the author's first game

Break the cycle This last-submitted parser for the jam is a bit of an intricate puzzle, requiring the player to read the prompts very carefully to find the solution... or they will be yoinked back to the start. The game is built in one room, where the player can do different action in hopes to reach the end - a sort of Aisle meets escape room, where there is only one true action to solve the puzzle. And so, you are an investigator (maybe?) stuck in some sort of loop (if you could remember why you are here, it would be greeeaaat), in a subway station, next to a vending machine, surrounded by some critters... and plagued by very strange and prophetic dreams (you really should take note of those). The twist/explanation of the ending is kind of nonsensical and very trippy, very on point from the rest of the game. It is both confusing and hilarious. I'm glad I played this last.

I think it could do with a little walkthrough or maybe hints :P I def needed help to get to the end, though I had been thiiiiis close with one of the command...

up until he was eight, chasen was cj king. the only people that were ever allowed to call him that were his parents: marian and waylon king. his mom was a physics teacher at the high school two blocks away from their cute, little two-story house in the suburbs. his father owned a landscaping company and planted the azalea bushes underneath the tree house he built with chasen the summer he turned six. it was pretty close to perfect—and then his parents died in a car crash.

when he was fifteen, a strange lady showed up at the home with an even stranger man. apparently, his father wasn't his father. trippy. looking back, it was kind of obvious. people always asked the white couple where they adopted their brown son from. but his dad was his dad, and mr. reyes was just a rich guy who his uncle tried to extort. for a long time, chasen wished that mr. reyes would've just payed his uncle off and left him alone, but things got better slowly. his siblings were...weird, but his dad ended up being kind of cool.

chasen did very well in school, despite transferring so often as a kid. his only friends were books, and he liked it that way. he got a full-ride to liberty after graduating first in his class, and he never looked back.

thanks to his mom, chasen had an early relationship with science. he liked working with his hands and figuring out how to take things apart and put them back together again. it was only natural that he went into mechanical engineering. he started fixing bikes at the local garage for spare change while he worked on getting his masters.

he’s used to people having a certain perception about him, so he usually keeps the smart thing to himself. bc. no one expects anything from an idiot with anger management issues.

When we were doing sprints the other day, we were talking about Fantasy Drugs, and I've been curious ever since about what kinds you've made for the world of ASMLP+ (and any of your other worlds)!! What does it feel like with the mind link drug?? Are there any weird side effects to it?? How much of the mind is linked - like can you feel the same sensations? Is it just the surface level thoughts? If one of you thinks in images and the other in words, does the drug "translate" the thoughts?? And are there other drugs you've thought up??

Hey Pax! Happy WBW! I'm excited to talk about this.

So the drug taking center stage is called Serenity. It is a viscous slime that can be dried and mixed into things or drunk outright--but it's not the most pleasant substance to consume. Nadia often mixes it into tea or pudding (chia seed pudding is a similar texture) to make it tolerable.

In legal circumstances, it is a drug used in psychiatric spaces that is prescribed by therapists to help their patients SAFELY explore memories. Best results happen when all parties have consumed Serenity, but it can work if someone takes a high enough dose and gets close enough proximity to the person whose mind they want to answer. This can be difficult, however, especially if the person whose mind they want to explore knows how to shield their own thoughts--magically or otherwise. The dosages either way are closely monitored. There aren't many effects aside from the ability to... blend thoughts, as it were. Serenity dulls the senses some, there is some research to suggest it can be a very mild antidepressant as well as a mild pain reliever.

In illegal circumstances, however, things get more interesting. People in these circumstances tend to take it at unregulated dosages, so the effects are more enhanced. Going back to Nadia, she takes it because at higher levels, all the effects get enhanced... including the whole "mind melding" thing. Because it is, effectively, melding minds. For until Serenity wears off, you and the people with you can... essentially enter each other's bodies. I actually just finished writing a super trippy sex scene with this in mind. It's mostly uncontrollable--in said scene, Nadia blinks in and out of being within herself, being within Simone, and some odd middle ground. They also pass each other thoughts like classroom notes lol all together it's... well, it's a trip.

I based a lot of it off the one time I did LSD to be honest. It was an absolutely bizarre experience. Severe dissociation, a sensory nightmare, felt like I was understanding something about the universe that I can no longer recall and that if I just pushed a little farther, I could leave myself for a while.

(also, a secret no one wants to know, Serenity is derived from the same miasma that makes monsters.)

I haven't yet thought of other substances--I'm kinda attached to this one tbh--but I def want to think of some more especially in religious settings. Something something trance work to get closer to the Gods.

SO very obvious from the title to references in the dialogue, i drew a lot of inspiration from twilight BUT i craved a darker supernatural aspect like the upside down and the emotions of eddie being "left behind". i struggled a lot writing chapter two (hence why it came out like two months after the first one lmao) bc i wanted eddie to be hesitant around steve but still have this intimidating supernatural presence about him. that's why i wrote steve begging encouraging eddie to kiss him anyway even if he thinks he'll hurt steve. steve is def not one to victimize himself or be the vulnerable one in a group but he is a fighter so this is the little dance that they do:

“Do you like being my prey, little lamb?” Eddie whispers huskily. Steve whines. 

Eddie drags his thumb down so he’s gripping Steve’s chin, forcing him to look up. Eddie takes a deep breath and smiles like a shark. “That’s new. Oh, Stevie, I can smell you. I can smell how turned on you are, if the pressure up against my thigh wasn't enough.” Eddie’s other hand trails down to rest on Steve’s bare chest, right over his heart. It’s beating like it wants to come out of Steve’s ribs and into Eddie’s hand. 

Eddie hums, contemplative. “Steve Harrington, unafraid of the big, bad wolf.”

“You’re not bad,” Steve weakly manages to get out. 

“Keep telling yourself that,” Eddie huffs through a laugh. 

“Can’t…can’t be bad if I want you to…” Steve stammers, pushing his face up to try and kiss Eddie again. 

“If you want me to do what?” 

“Touch me. Hurt me. Take me,” Steve admits, a blush warming his face. 

Eddie sucks his teeth, his fangs , and tilts his head. “Let’s get you to bed.”

it's one: yes, he's in love with eddie but also two: he wants to prove that he's strong enough to handle eddie like this so eddie feels better about himself and won't run away from his newfound safety.

if we go with the twilight analogy here, it's like steve is bella saying "i'm not scared of you" in his bedroom and eddie (edward, isn't that trippy?) being like "well you really shouldn't have said that"

The Fifth Season

When a book has so many good things going for it, where do you even start?

I’m still reeling from the ending. Fuck, I knew it’d be a bit bitter but it got me, oh, it’s got me wrapped right around it’s finger. The Fifth Season is definitely my favorite book now and I have a feeling that Jemisin is going to be one of my favorite authors along with Le Guin.

1. Style

First thing’s first, I love mythology styled stories. The Stillness operates around these stone tablets called “Stone Lore” that aid people in surviving a world regularly wrecked by earth quakes and tremors.

It starts out with this almost story book field then blooms into a very harsh fantasy setting but even that does it a diservice.

It’s like trying to grasp sand with your hands. Nothing feels adequate to describe just how vividly Jemisin describes Stillness with a combination of direct description, how people interact, the vocabulary, and the unique conventions like the view of orogenes as inherently bad.

2. Storytelling

Non-linear story telling but you don’t even know it. I must’ve gotten to 3/4s the way through the book before the Damaya is Syen discover hit and FUCK! That was made cool, on top of that, revealing where the obelisks came from???? Very radical. Loved it!

Then just how all the storylines converge just— it is so satisfying. If someone is reading this— go read the book (research tws first) but - i can’t sing the praises loud enough of how amazing Jemisin did with this.

It’s not because it felt like a surprise but just how Jemisin took the time threading together these three perspectives in such a careful intricate manner that you feel it so hard. It’s one of those books best taken 50-70 pages at a time because anymore and it’s overwelming.

You just can always feeling the weight that is hanging on this characters, even in those happy moments and damn do those moments hit so well.

3. Racism

Like I said, I’m white so I don’t feel like I can comment on this except to say that fantasy/scifi dealings with it are interesting and I hope to read more about it cuz like wow, in a different context it really highlights a lot of things I never considered. Like how ingrained it would be to the point of regularly picking out the “desired” traits of a person cuz I’m sure I do that subconsciously but seeing the subconscious conscious is trippy.

That’s all I feel like I can say without putting my foot in my mouth.

4. QUEER STUFF! FUCK YEAH!

Not sure what Innon, Syen or Alabaster’s sexualities are but it is certainly fun seeing strong charismatic folks like Innon being interested in both men and women. I feel like there’s not much of that in media with stereotypically masculine folks. I bet it’s even less for POCs.

On top of that, we have some polyamory! And they raise a kid! TvT and it’s like a situation where the whole village helps and it’s cute and adorable.

Some of my favorite chapters since its such a ray of sunshine in a pretty intense book.

Though, if I could tell my past self anything before reading I’d warn about

1. Non-Con Breeding: it isn’t violent in the stereotypical sense but it gets under your skin. First time it happens especially since it looks consensual even though it’s coerced by the Fulcrum.

2. Child abu*se: you kinda see it coming with Damaya and Scaffa but not to the extent, plus with how eerily realistic it feels, it hits hard. Had to stop for a bit.

3. Child loss: self explanatory.

Normally I can read a book of this size (480~ pages) in 3-4 days. This took me over a week because I had to pace myself, especially in the beginning 200 pages.

I’m super glad I read it. First book I figured out to pace myself too which helped. I definitely plan to co-read books like this with something lighter (def can’t fall asleep reading The Fifth Season).

Overall, like I said, loved it. The writing, characters, storytelling style to the little quotes from the verses and other in-universe scripts made it feel so alive.

She says she doesn’t know why he dipped (she offers a lot of theories up) and then she says when he finally tells her in fifty years time she’ll answer good riddance because it wasn’t sexy once it wasn’t forbidden. Pretty straightforward lyric dude. Also why would it be forbidden for Matty lmao like he was single/fucking around. He could fuck or talk to whoever tf he wanted to. SHE was the one who wasn’t supposed to be with him.

hoax is a very complicated songs about multiple situations all interwoven together and she’s said this verbatim. It’s a pretty song and it was her trying to do something different and just write lyrically and beautifully about many different things to that track so idk that I’d take any of it literally. It’s giving that one anon who keeps saying she “confesses” to being a functional alcoholic in Fortnight (she does probably drink too much but she absolutely confessed no such thing - the whole song is very very very metaphorical and set in a fantasy tbh).

The Great War quite clearly says she accused him of shit he didn’t do (which she’s said lyrically repeatedly - that’s also the premise of Afterglow). Now, maybe he’s the best most ninja cheater ever and very good at gaslighting but I struggle to believe that she spent YEARS trying to catch him and never did and no one ever stepped forward to be like “yeah I at minimum talked to him here are the screenshots” either while they were together or after the breakup. We KNOW who Taylor cheated with. Joe cheated with… figments of people’s imagination. (And I HAVE SAID many, many times that evidently there’s something he was doing wrong because she wasn’t able to get over her insecurities and jealousies for sooo many years so clearly he either has poor boundaries with female friends, or he’s just got a very flirtatious manner, or something but that shit’s def on him - doesn’t mean he ever did anything but it’s fucked that she spent that many years worried about it).

In SLL she talks about how he’s with her in HIS DREAMS dude loooool like idk man. She was emotionally cheating on him and had been worried about many girls since the beginning. It sounds more like projection than something she figured out. (And she acknowledges that because it’s “you’ll find someone” not “you’ve found someone” whereas SHE HAD found someone). Also what’s so trippy about emotional cheating (which is what she accuses him of there) is you can’t possibly know unless they get together with the other person or they tell you (and there’s no way Joe told her). So like… how could she know who is with him in his dreams? 😩 It’s probably like young Marion Cotillard lmao but that doesn’t mean he’s a time traveler fucking young Marion Cotillard 😩😩😭😭

We won’t ever know exactly what happened but here’s what we do know with zero assumptions: Taylor at least emotionally cheated and dumped Joe to be with Matty. Joe is willing to go on record to say from his end it was a fully committed relationship for six and a half years (sure, he could be lying but like why lol?) Taylor previously accused him of things he didn’t do and was irrationally jealous (per her lyrics - or as I said earlier he’s the best gaslighter in the world lol). Some assumption but really minimal: something about how Joe behaves made her super insecure and act a bit psycho and yes that’s also on him.

Also humor me - why would it be better from Taylor’s end if he was also cheating? Let’s say he was and she could prove it. Why didn’t she just… leave lol. Why did she get her own side piece? How are you defending her by being like “well maybe he was cheating too because the voices in her walls told her so” - maybe he was lol idk, why didn’t she just leave then? I’m reminded of that anon who tried to defend Joe by saying “maybe he never even proposed” like okay maybe so that makes him a worse person. Maybe Joe did cheat first but Taylor’s cheating still makes her a shitty person and if she stayed while he was cheating and got her own side piece it makes her kinda stupid to boot and also idk why she wouldn’t just flat out say it and tell us what he did and how she caught him.
