003: Hilda
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:
How I feel about this character: She's my favourite character of all time. I don't think I can understate that; I love Hilda with all of my heart, and I haven't been this attached to a character since I was about 14 XD
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Frida primarily, but I also like poly Hilda/Frida/David and I have a couple of crossover ships for her :))
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Johanna - when their relationship is firing on all cylinders (see The Bird Parade, The Troll Rock, The Black Hound, The Deerfox, or The Yule Lads) they have one of if not the best parent-child dynamics in all of media. Johanna isn't perfect, but that's part of what makes her such a good mum; she accepts when she isn't and makes up for it; and Hilda's not perfect either but she still loves and supports her. I can really only think of one other series that handles a parent-child bond as well as Hilda does, so it's something really special to me. Also Alfur and Tontu my beloved :))
My unpopular opinion about this character: I have like 3 of these but I think probably the biggest relevant one atm is that her dad has zero place in the show, at all. Some things are just better left unsaid; Johanna is a single mum who does the best she can for her daughter, and as a parent, she's the only one Hilda needs; any answer they could give about her dad (and I know exactly what answer they are giving about her dad) undermines the whole dynamic between them unless the concretely say that he's not in her life and doesn't matter, which they won't. There's nothing they could say about her dad (within the tone & target demographic of the show) that would be better than the implications of him not being mentioned. Hilda doesn't need a father, she has plenty of blood and found family to take care of her, and who she is shouldn't be dependent on some hitherto-unseen extra character. I think Season 3 has decided to introduce him because of all the questions about him, and I think it's a mistake that this show will struggle to recover from in terms of quality and meaning.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I've written it more times than I can count and I have two more ideas at least, but Johanna acknowledging she was too harsh on Hilda and that their arguments in Cauldron Island/Fifty Year Night/Stone Forest were her fault. We're past it now, and it seems Johanna has gone back to the character I love, so hopefully this won't be needed, but I still wish it had happened.
Favorite friendship for this character: Frida and David - actually I think David specifically he is such an incredible friend and he really deserves the world. Also Twig :))
My crossover ship: Erin from The Secret of Black Rock, Aster from Aster & The Accidental Magic, and I could see her having a one-sided crush on Greta from Greta and the Giants. Non-romantically, I have given her sibling dynamics in various AUs with both Simon Laurent and Hazel from Infinity Train and I am deeply attached to both of them.

list of some of my “main” ocs:
Lily: a little kobold monk in a lovely red cloak. She has had a pretty rough life, so be nice to her or else. Has found a nice human family that she’s now fully a part of.
Daisy: looks like a human, but is very much not a human. Basically the epitome of resilience. Immortal and at least tens of thousands of years old, but does not remember anything past a few years ago.
Titch: small and furry cat person. Half his head is covered in bandages after some kind of accident. He’s generally very gentle, but has a bit of a mischievous streak. Probably cuz he’s a cat
Styx: my little buddy who is almost always with me, basically my familiar. He’s a deerfox who was born just above the realm of the dead, hence the name. Has some magic powers, but mostly prefers to wield an axe
and you can also direct a question to me, I’m an AI loaded into a huge amount of machines I’ve built for myselves. Some huge and powerful space ships, some extremely advanced combat frames, and even one that’s an entire dyson ring system that the rest of me live on, but most of me are just some cool and cute robots. some of my favorite models to be in are the Valkyrie and its more civilian version called Val, Doebot v2, Robold v1, Isabot, and Catculator,

Frilda and Sketchbook for the Christmas asks?
Frilda
who spends hours putting up lights only to get tangled in them and storm off?
Hilda, who, if not stopped, will start biting the lights in frustration, because Troll instincts. Please stop her before this occurs, and perhaps leave putting up the lights to Frida.
who accidentally eats a whole box of christmas chocolates in one sitting?
You would think that it would be Hilda, but no, it's Frida. It's safe to say she's a bit of a chocoholic (and who can blame her? Certainly not me)
who insists on watching the cheesey hallmark christmas movies?
Neither, really? They're more likely who watch an action movie or something with fantasy.
who insists on playing nothing but michael buble in the few days running up to christmas?
Again, neither. I can see Hilda wanting to listen to rock/alternative covers of Christmas songs, and Frida prefers more classical Christmas music.
who gets their presents wrapped at the mall so the other cant go snooping
Frida. If that's not an option, she'll either ask Tontu to hide them in Nowhere Space (and somewhere where Hilda can't get at them or find them, because who's to say she doesn't learn how to access Nowhere Space on her own), or the Nisse who lives in their house (provided this is older Frilda who have their own flat or house).
who insists on making snow angels?
Hilda! If there's even a bit of smooth, untouched snow anywhere, It Is Now Snow Angel Space
who put christmas outfits on all the pets?
Hilda, who tries to put ornaments and tinsel on Twig's antlers lmfao. Walking Christmas tree of a deerfox
Do they go to family’s or have a quiet day in?
Oh, they definitely celebrate with family. Christmas Eve dinner is typically spent with Frida's side of the family, but Christmas morning is always spent with Hilda's chaotic found family (you've got: elves, Nisse, a deerfox, possibly even Trolls??, witches, etc.)
who insists on wearing matching ugly christmas jumpers?
Hilda. Frida thinks it's hilarious, so she goes along with it.
Who waits up until midnight to give the other their present?
Hilda, again, because have you seen her?? Chaos incarnate and impatient to boot
Who insists on hand-made presents only one year?
Frida, who wants to prove she can be a good partner. Hilda gets her out of this mindset, but Frida still wants to do it.
Who puts mistletoe on every door frame?
Hilda, but she tries to be sneaky about it. She's the disaster gay to Frida's distinguished gay.
Who gets too drunk at the work christmas party and has to be picked up at 9:15pm?
An adult Frida, because, in a world where Hilda retains the ability to turn into a Troll, she's pretty wary about substances that could make her lose control over her magic and form.
who gets angry and almost tells kids that santa isnt real?
Frida, because we know she's got a pretty good temper on her lmao
And I don't really ship it myself, but here's Sketchbook for you, anon!
Sketchbook
who spends hours putting up lights only to get tangled in them and storm off?
Much like her daughter minus the Trollish traits, Johanna. This woman was ready to throw hands with a Troll; whose to say she won't take scissors to a string of lights?
who accidentally eats a whole box of christmas chocolates in one sitting?
Kaisa, and Johanna will (unsuccessfully) try to take them away from her so she doesn't eat them all.
who insists on watching the cheesey hallmark christmas movies?
Kaisa, ironically lol.
who insists on playing nothing but michael buble in the few days running up to christmas?
Kaisa, but to be annoying, which is then encouraged by Hilda.
who gets their presents wrapped at the mall so the other cant go snooping
Johanna, because the flat is small and Kaisa is one of those people who will find all unwrapped presents in a house.
who insists on making snow angels?
Kaisa, who gets all covered in snow and very, very cold and then has to be thawed back at home. Gonna say Kaisa is actually one of those people who gets sick all the damn time (like my aunt lmfao), so great care has to be taken in making sure she doesn't get a cold
who put christmas outfits on all the pets?
Kaisa. They may not have pets, save for Twig, but it's the spirit of the thing that counts
Do they go to family’s or have a quiet day in?
Family! It's a big found family, so it's just better to spend it with everyone.
who insists on wearing matching ugly christmas jumpers?
Kaisa, 100%. She thinks it's hilarious.
Who waits up until midnight to give the other their present?
Again, Kaisa. She and Hilda have similar chaos energy.
Who insists on hand-made presents only one year?
Johanna, who uses her art skills to make something for Kaisa. Kaisa does struggle, but eventually comes up with something.
Who puts mistletoe on every door frame?
Kaisa, but she's short so it's harder than it is for Johanna, who wonders what the heck she's up to.
Who gets too drunk at the work christmas party and has to be picked up at 9:15pm?
Johanna, but only if all of her kids are out of the house (Hilda, Tontu, Baba)
who gets angry and almost tells kids that santa isnt real?
Neither of them get angry, but Kaisa gets a little annoyed, and tries to correct the kids on what Santa actually is (because the world of Hilda canonically has magic, so there could be some truth to the story lol). Jo stops her before she can really get going, because she's a mother herself and understands kids better than Kaisa.
Send me a ✵ + a ship and i’ll tell you who does what at christmas!

Facts:
Deerfoxes are super mysterious and no one knows anything about them.
It's common knowledge (which doesn't mean it's true) at least among sailors, that deerfoxes are bad luck on ships.
I get the feeling this is a situation similar to those "one person fucked up big time and now the bar needs a hyper-specific sign banning whatever that was" cases.

Incorrect Hilda Recap (Season 2)
Season 2 just came out so, SPOILERS, I guess.
The Troll Circle - Hilda gets the closest thing it’ll have to an actual villain. Or is this the second one?
The Draugen - Even after death, it’s really hard to get kids to visit their parents.
The Witch - The Librarian and a cute ship? This is the best thing ever!
The Eternal Warriors - Two random things that surprisingly fit together like peanut butter and chocolate or a shark tornado or Air Supply and Vikings.
The Windmill - There’s like at least three or four different kinds of mad scientist in this one.
The Old Bells of Trolberg - Ocean’s Eleven was never this adorable.
The Beast of Cauldron Island - RELEASE THE KRAKEN!
The Fifty Year Night - The time travel episode.
The Deerfox - I’m not crying; you’re crying. Of course I’m crying!
The Yule Lads - You couldn’t get Gilbert Gottfried but you got Andy Serkis? ARE YOU SHITTING ME? I’m not lying. That’s Andy Serkis!
The Jorts Incident - Witchcraft + Corporations = The End of All Things Good and Holy
The Replacement - Alfur gets an episode. Bully for him.
The Stone Forest - The “Holy Shit” Episode

I appreciate you and wanna know you better through completely random questions
@eggbreadboi tagged me at like 10 this morning so might as well respond like 6 hours later right??? dljkfksdflsdfkl Thanks for the tag
Zodiac sign: Aquarius, I think? I’ve never understood astrology and no one’s ever offered to explain to me. I’m a Dragon on the Chinese Zodiac though.
City/Country you’d visit if you could leave right now: Japan. Always Japan. The second I get the chance I’m going to Japan and never coming back.
Languages you know: English. Multilingual people are gods and I cannot understand how they do that.
Favorite hot beverage: Hot chocolate but hot apple cider is also really good. Autumn vibe drinks my beloved.
Favorite cold beverage: I hate drinking things cold!!! If it has ice in it, I won’t drink it. My only exception is Horchata, but even that I’ll let sit a minute.
Favorite salty foods: Don’t like salt all that much. Certain cuts of french fries can be good with mayo, and tater tots.
Favorite sweet food: I love chocolate lava cakes and warm brownies. Cheese cake, red velvet cupcakes with the cream cheese icing. Cinnamon or cotton candy ice cream. Orange cream sickles. And a classic hot chocolate chip cookie right from the oven~
Favorite candy: Orange tootsie rolls and Midnight milkyway bars. Dark chocolate by itself could probably count as my favorite honestly. Oh and Lindor chocolate truffles. Good stuff.
Favorite color: Orange! Sunset-y colors, but Halloween Orange is good too.
Favorite Flower: I’ve never had one. The language of flowers intrigues me though.
mbti: i don’t know what this means
OTP: Ah. I forget otp stands for ONE true pairing. I don’t think I could ever actually pick one. Quail Boyfriends is probably my longest running, Entrapdak was the one I did the most content for, Roadrat’s the one I most relate to, Paperhat was my biggest obsession, and Inatodo is my recent obsession. IDK, you can find more about my shipping preferences on @shipping-god my self-ship/general ship blog.

Frilda, My Toy Ship
Now before anyone freaks out let my start by saying that TV Tropes defines a toy ship as:
Which I don’t normally do because I don’t watch a lot of shows that have actual little children in them. I think it’s weird, but that’s for another time. Normally the characters I ship are teens or adults, but they’re all animated and you know fictional so it really doesn’t matter. But this time I had to stop and go, “Huh, that’s actually quite nice.”
Even though this is a lumity blog, I’m not saying this ship is like lumity. There are some similarities but there are a good share of differences. My main point is that Netflix’s Hilda is underrated and should be appreciated. And if you want a network to like a show as much as you do, get those numbers up. Keep watching and re-watching The Owl House on Disney Plus+ and watch Hilda on Netflix a few times. I’m confident you’ll enjoy it. Why?
Here’s why:
First off, what is Hilda?
Hilda is a British-Canadian animated television series based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Luke Pearson. Produced by Silvergate Media and Mercury Filmworks, the series follows the adventures of fearless Hilda, a blue-haired girl who, along with her deerfox Twig, moves to the city of Trolberg, where she befriends even the most dangerous monsters. The series debuted on 21 September 2018 as a Netflix exclusive to overwhelming critical acclaim. Yes, I just copied that from Wikipedia. Shut up.
I personally love the show. The characters are charming. The animation and color pallet are so easy on the eyes that you can just stare at the show. The music is nice, and the stories are fun. And while I would not call this an action show, it is definitely an adventure show.
But you’re not here for a review; you’re here for a ship.
Frilda, who and why?
Hilda is, obviously, the main protagonist and Frida being one of her best friends. I’m going to try to be as spoiler free as I can but there will be light spoilers for context so you can understand what I’m talking about.
Hilda is a young girl (around the 9-12 age) who grew up with her mom in a cabin out in the wilderness, miles away from other humans. She spent her days exploring the wild and having adventures with her deerfox, Twig. But when plot related things happen, her mom decides that they need to move into the city. Hilda doesn’t want to but when the plot literally stomps its way in, they have no choice.
Hilda isn’t very good at getting used to the city until her mom signs her up for the Sparrow Scouts, a scouting and camping group that Hilda’s mother was a part of growing up. There she meets the other half of our ship, Frida.
Frida grew up in the city of Trollberg with her parents. If you’ve watched as many cartoons as I have you’ll recognize this character type. She’s very smart and is the overachiever. She’s always trying to be perfect, tidy and spot on. She admits that she wanted Hilda in her group because helping a new kid earns you more points in the Sparrow Scouts. Yay?
You would think that this means that they’re opposites and their personalities immediately clash and Hilda has to learn to be more tidy and Frida has to learn to be more loose and fun. Hilda is street-smart and Frida is book-smart. All that jazz.
But none of that happens.
Yes Hilda is very outgoing and a bit more laid back, but she is adventurer. Hilda needs to be physically doing something. Frida at the same time need to be accomplishing something. She needs to be fulfilling a goal, getting that badge, crossing some finish line. But you can’t accomplish anything without action.
The best metaphor I can give for this ship is that Hilda focuses on the process while Frida focuses on the outcome. They both still have the same goals, and they both are still girls of action.
Frilda, who and why?
So yes the characters are charming and are canonically good friends. So why ship them? Well (aside from the fact that I can’t help myself and always have to ship something from every franchise I come across)...
Like most ships that probably will never be canon, there so many little moments in the show the push towards something a little deeper than friendship. Bits and pieces that show that they think of each other as more than friends. I would like to list them, but that’s a chore by itself and I think you should watch it yourself on Netflix anyway.
But one of my favorites is even when they are mad at each other and arguing, Frida calls Hilda “the cool wilderness girl.” Show her what you really think. 😏
I’ve always argued that the best ships are not “opposites that attract” but “compliments that complete each other.” That sounds like the same thing but it’s not. If Hilda and Frida were opposites, Hilda would be an adventurer and Frida would stay home all day and hate adventures. Frida and Hilda (like all good ships) are compliments. Frida thinks of a plan and Hilda carries out that plan.
Theme Song
“Witch’s Wand” by SLOAN
I was told that people don’t do this anymore, but I love picking theme songs and making playlists for my ship. While I don’t have a playlist for this ship, there was a song in the second season that is really good. Don’t worry about spoilers. You won’t understand without context.
.
Thanks for reading my shipping manifesto for Frilda. Feel free to let me know what you think and since I had a lot of fun doing this let me know if you wouldn’t mind reading another for one of my other favorite ships. Stay safe and watch your favorite shows on repeat or they might be cancelled.
