#Repost @deeplyrootedkitchen ・・・ Ground Cherries!! I always try to grow something new in my garden- maybe something I’ve never grown before or maybe something I’ve never tasted before. This summer I’m trying ground cherries (which I picked up from @plantfoundry in Sacramento). They grow on a plant similar to a tomatillo plant, only much shorter (maybe 2 1/2-3ft). High in beta carotene, vitamin A and Vitamin C. They grow inside a papery husk and you harvest them once they have dropped to the ground. They have a very sweet, tropical, almost pineapple taste with the savory finish of a tomato. They are good right out of the husk or they can be used sweet or savory. Recently I made a salsa out of them that I put on top of some grilled halibut (any white flakey fish or grilled chicken would work). It looks like your typical salsa verde, but with a totally different, tropical taste. Check your local farmer’s market out and give these ground cherries a try. Ground Cherry Salsa: I pint ground cherries, husks removed 1 small tomato, roughly chopped 1/2 bunch cilantro 1/2 small sweet onion, roughly chopped 1-2 tsp lime juice Salt to taste In your blender, blend together your tomato, cilantro, onion and lime juice. Purée well. Add in ground cherries, blending until just blended. Salt to taste. If you don’t like the seeds, you can strain salsa through a fine mesh strainer and strain out seeds. PS- I used a entire bunch of cilantro in the photo pictured. It was a little much so I would downgrade to just half a bunch. #deeplyrootedkitchen #groundcherries #groundcherrysalsa #organicgardening #organic #gardentotable #farmtofork #farmtotable #squarefootgardening #theplantfoundry #summerrecipes #salsa #itswhatsfordinner #norcal #sacramentofarmtofork #farmtoforkcapital
