Finally putting down my Milgram fantasy au thoughts!
Haruka: Son of nobility, his parents were too busy with their own business and self-image to care for him. The family used to have hunting dogs and a beautiful decorative fish pond on the grounds, but the animals have gone missing (along with the Duchess’ prized necklace). Haruka’s little sister is the darling of the household/town, and he grows more strung tight and jealous. (I was really tempted to make him aquatic but it defeated the drowning metaphor lol).
Yuno: So my original idea was a sorceress offering potions that help to fall in love, find wealth, make dates go perfectly, (and ones to handle some consequences of said dates.) She’s got the classic aesthetic of lives in an isolated icy tower in lavish clothing, seemingly helpful and social but it’s clear there’s far more to her than she’s letting on. However, now I'm super biased by @dearmahiru's vampire Yuno thoughts and I may be running with that in the future...
Fuuta: I mean this all started from the knight au in his mv. Specifically he joins/leads a band of knights who haven’t sworn loyalty to a single lord, believing their own sense of justice will prevail. While he can’t use magic himself, he can still wield his fire sword with ease. He catches word of a witch in a nearby village and charges in.
Muu: A princess, way higher ranked than Haruka but knows his family. She’s studying in a foreign kingdom to gain more knowledge of the world as she’s next in line for the throne, but her treatment there isn’t quite what she expected. There’s nature magic in her bloodline though she hasn’t quite mastered it. Violent and animal/insect tendencies can arise in moments of strong emotion.
Shidou: A healer who’s known for his helpful magic and beautiful garden of medicinal plants. After the death of his family, he secretly seeks out dark tomes and spells to begin learning necromancy. The craft isn’t exact, and a few lives must be sacrificed to the cause. Only the really observant notice that his usually carefully-tended garden has started to wilt.
Mahiru: She’s a faerie in the woods near a major city. She’s heard all about human society, and became so captivated by stories of true love and fairy tale romance that she left her forest for the first time in her long life to try and live with them. Her knack with nature allowed her to pick up a florist job easily, but there are plenty of things she still doesn’t quite understand – different human culture and boundaries she misses in her focus on love.
Kazui: Bard who travels the kingdom with his performances. He left his wife at home for extended periods of time during these trips, and accidentally falls for someone new on the road. It also allows danger to move closer to his wife while he's far and unable to protect her.
Amane: Aspiring priestess who rarely leaves the temple in her childhood. She's some kind of chosen one/holy vessel being trained to channel or communicate with her deity. She feels immense pressure from the monks and priests around her. Mirroring her t2 change, she ends up channeling a demon instead of the god she was hoping for.
Mikoto: A witch who has a pretty normal job in the city, but he also advertises his clairvoyance and spirit medium talents. With the strange happenings in his house (things not where he left them, blacking out, concerning bloodstains), he assumes he’s just being haunted by the ghosts he reaches out to, and doesn’t know the truth about his other alter(s)
Kotoko: An ex-knight druid. She calls herself an assassin, though she’s not associated with any kind of guild or group. She's in tune with animals, speaking with wolves and other beasts to rally them to her cause. (There’s nice aesthetic contrast between her animal wildness/raw power compared to the civilized justice systems she left behind.)

Under the moonlight the beast would change. It slithered out of the warmth of it's prisoner's hovel. It's scales flaked off in its trail. The white sand behind it was splattered in blood and rotten viscera as the skin it wore sloughed off.
It hid itself everytime this change happened, everytime it's body felt more a choking shell than it's own flesh. It hid deep in the jungle where only it and it's prisoner had ever stepped. The small pond of fresh water soothing the bare skin that slowly emerged. The legs with muscles it only used these rare clear skied nights.
Two arms that still bore the scars of a life lived working, a chest that moved with breath and life while it's new found truth didn't even have a heart beat.
Beneath the moonlight a monster took the face of the man it hadn't been in so many years. It avoided catching sight of itself, tipped it's head to the stars above and relished in the satisfying in and out of its breaths. This body was so very very frail, so very different from anything it was now, but it still had it's charms. It's blood was warm, it's breathing easy, it's heart a steady war drum of life that lulled and invigorated at the same time.
It heard the footsteps, later than it felt like it should. Even and cutting through the still night one after the other until it's prisoner's shadow was cast accross it. Like this it was vulnerable to the prisoner's rage. It could be killed. The prisoner hadn't made an attempt against it in many months despite that.
"Why are you out here?" Marion's voice felt booming in the quiet despite the near whisper he always spoke at.
"Thought I'd save you having to see such an ugly thing," the monster responded, still looking to the stars. Its voice vibrated low in his chest. Deep and rumbling. It liked how it felt.
"Should have just squirmed off into the sea if that was your concern. Your other face is even worse," Marion sat beside it in the shallow pool. His fingers playing with the edge of the bandage wrapped around his thigh.
"Prefer this one then? Wouldn't have guessed with how kissy you get with the other one."
"At least this one has some good memories attached to it."
the monster huffed with good natured mirth, his lips curling in the slightest smirk. "Oh yeah? Like that time you pushed me overboard so you didn't have to share?"
"Yeah. Or the time you were so sick from doing a shot off that one fox you forgot how to blink for like ten minutes."
"That was your idea."
"So? You still went through with it."
"Yeah and you got a boner over it so bad we had to leave early so you could hump my leg like a dog."
"Shut up, that was unrelated."
"Oh sure it was Mary," the monster finally tore it's gaze from the stars above to the man beside him. His hair was a mess and his beard grew patchy and uneven. His eyes were ringed with bags and bruises decorated much of him. Still, he managed to be even more a treat to look at than a sky unsullied by any light.
"It was!"
"I already agreed with you."
"No you didn't, you were being sarcastic."
"Bitch. So what if I was? What are you going to do about it?" the monster offered the challenge without knowing what he hoped to achieve. Maybe a fight, maybe a fuck, these days there was no real difference between the two for them.
"I can ignore you until you apologize."
"Because that worked Great for you last time. Go silent treatment on me again and I'll leave you here alone for a full week instead of just a few days. See how pissy you're feeling after having to take care of yourself for once in your pathetic life."
"Cunt."
"Ass."
Silence fell between them again, the monster turning it's attention back to the stars. There were constellations it knew. It could find north most of the time, but much of the map that hung heavy above them alluded it even when it had spent months trying to learn it. Old routes it had wished to know as innately as it now knew the sea floor.
"How do we get home from here?" it asks after a long moment.
Marion sighs and points to something in the sky that has meaning to him but not to his monster, "Follow that until you can see the tops of the Boars," he moves to point to another cluster, "From there go to where the Mare's hoof points and you'll be within spitting distance of our port."
The monster nods, it didn't need help navigating the seas, but it could marvel at Marion's skill all the same.
"Will we ever go there again?" Marion asked the air around them.
"Maybe. If you behave and I can trust you to not run off."
"Are you serious or just making more promises you don't intend to keep?"
"Remember that tavern we called ours? I want to dance with you there again."
"Fucking why?"
"Last time we were there was the last time you smiled at me. Remember it clear as day and will do what it takes to see it again."
"You're an idiot."
"No shit?"
"Do something worth smiling about and then maybe you'll get one."
"Like what?"
"Like letting me go? Scrounging up some pants for me? Even just finding a bar of soap so I don't have to smell as bad as you?"
"I like the dancing plan better."
Marion huffed and flopped back into the shallow water. "I fucking hate you," he said with a sigh, his tone even and devoid of malice.
"Feelings mutual."

Why Your Ponds and Fountains Needs Regular Maintenance
Ponds and fountains can transform any outdoor space into a peaceful oasis. Their soothing sounds, the sparkling water, and the life they attract make them a cherished feature for homes and businesses. But like any investment, they need regular care to stay at their best. Without proper maintenance, that serene pond or elegant fountain can quickly lose its charm and even become a source of frustration. Let’s dive into why regular upkeep is essential and how First State Ponds & Fountains in Delaware can help you keep your water features looking and functioning beautifully.
Why Maintenance Matters
1. Keeps Water Clean and Healthy
Still water, as in ponds and fountains, can quickly become a breeding ground for algae, debris, and even harmful bacteria if left unchecked. Regular cleaning and treatment ensure the water stays clear, preventing unpleasant odors or murkiness that can ruin the aesthetic. If your pond has fish or plants, maintaining water quality is critical for their health and longevity.
2. Prolongs the Life of Your Water Feature
Pumps, filters, and other mechanical components work hard to keep your water feature running smoothly. Over time, dirt, algae, and mineral buildup can clog these systems, leading to wear and tear or even expensive repairs. Routine maintenance helps spot small issues before they become costly problems, extending the life of your equipment.
3. Enhances Aesthetic Appeal
The beauty of a pond or fountain is in its pristine appearance. Leaves, twigs, and dirt can accumulate, detracting from its visual appeal. Regular cleaning keeps your water feature looking fresh and inviting, ensuring it remains a centerpiece of your landscape.
4. Prevents Pest Infestations
Standing water can attract mosquitoes and other pests. By maintaining proper water circulation and cleanliness, you reduce the likelihood of your pond or fountain becoming a haven for unwanted critters.
5. Saves Money in the Long Run
Neglecting your pond or fountain may lead to expensive repairs or even the need for a complete replacement. Regular maintenance is an investment that prevents costly breakdowns and keeps your water feature functioning efficiently.
Why Choose Professional Maintenance?
While basic upkeep like skimming leaves or checking water levels can be done on your own, professional maintenance ensures a thorough and expert approach. A trained professional can handle deep cleaning, system checks, and water treatment with precision. They also bring the tools and experience needed to address more complex issues, saving you time and effort.
That’s where First State Ponds & Fountains in Delaware comes in.

Can a Pond Hurt Your Home Value?
Ponds can be a charming addition to any property, offering tranquility and a touch of nature's beauty. However, when it comes to home value, the impact of a pond isn't always crystal clear. Homeowners often wonder whether having a pond on their property could potentially hurt their home's value. In this article, we'll delve into the factors that influence how a pond might affect your property's worth.
Understanding the Impact
1. Aesthetic Appeal
Ponds can significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of a property. A well-maintained pond with lush vegetation and perhaps some decorative features like water fountains or ornamental fish can create a picturesque setting that appeals to many homebuyers. However, if the pond is poorly maintained or overly dominating the landscape, it could have the opposite effect, detracting from the property's overall appeal.
2. Property Size and Location
The impact of a pond on home value can vary depending on the size of the property and its location. In rural or suburban areas where large lots are common, a pond might be seen as a desirable feature, especially if it adds to the property's privacy and natural charm. In contrast, in urban or densely populated areas where space is at a premium, a pond might be viewed as taking up valuable real estate that could be used for other purposes.
3. Maintenance Requirements
One crucial factor that can influence how a pond affects home value is its maintenance requirements. A well-maintained pond that adds to the property's appeal without requiring excessive upkeep is likely to have a positive impact on home value. However, if the pond requires frequent cleaning, repairs, or chemical treatments, it could be seen as a burden by potential buyers, potentially lowering the property's value.
4. Liability and Safety Concerns
Ponds can also raise liability and safety concerns for homeowners. If not adequately fenced or secured, a pond could pose a drowning risk, especially for families with young children. Additionally, ponds that attract pests like mosquitoes or become breeding grounds for algae can create health hazards and further diminish the property's value.
Whether a pond enhances or hurts your home's value depends on various factors such as its aesthetic appeal, maintenance requirements, property size, and location. While a well-maintained pond can add to the property's charm and appeal, an unkempt or poorly situated pond could detract from its value. Ultimately, homeowners should carefully weigh the pros and cons of having a pond and consider factors such as maintenance, safety, and market trends before making a decision.

FOOD OF EBOTT CONTINUED!
Crops
Scrumpties: a magical variant of a plum, these fruits have a pretty pastel yellow skin and a dark red soft flesh. They taste like if strawberries had the texture of a fig. The fruit are extremely aromatic with a fruity and floral scent, so much so that they change the scent of those who eat them to match the trees. They’re used as a base in many perfumes exported out of ebott. Many monsters dislike the fruit because while tasty, it smells just too strong. But they’re a huge hit with the humans
Lady Luck: related to the clover, this close to the ground cluster of leaves is a bright spring green with a faint line of gold on the leaf tops. It has cute Star shaped leaves with four on each stem. It tastes like bitter celery and is a wonderful source of vitamin c! The name comes from its home au, birdswap, where people would carry a sprig of it in their shirt pockets for good luck
Chewmelon: this melon is massive, often the size of a standard chair. It has a white skin/shell and a gummy lime green flesh inside. Like the name suggests, the fruit is extremely chewy. It tastes like a slightly sour watermelon according to humans but monsters insist it’s its own unique flavor. The magic melon has healing properties making it extremely valuable for treating burns, scarring and other skin wounds. Besides foods, it’s commonly used in skin treatments and medicines
Mahogany reeds: a common pond reed found in every au with an underground waterfall area. This magical reed is one of the most durable woods known to monsterkind. The reeds are extremely tough, load bearing, fireproof and waterproof. The only way to really slice them is through magical attacks. Because of this, and their elegant mahogany color, they’re cultivated and prized as a building material. The roots of the reeds are much softer and edible as well! It tastes like a gritty parsnip and can be cooked like any other tuber. Many athletes claim it raises their DF but that’s yet to be proven.
Giant amanita: like the name suggests, this mushroom resembles the red and white spotted amanita mushroom. However this shroom can be differentiated by a dark brown stem, and the fact that it grows to be like the size of a bear when mature. Also it growls like a bear when sliced into to scare off would be predators lol. The giant amanita is poisonous to humans unless cooked completely through, but monsters can safely eat it raw. It tastes like a basic portobello mushroom but is high in fat, so it’s recommended not to eat too much at a time.
Ornamental brass beans: this beanstalk is both a popular yard decoration and a healthy snack! The stalks and leaves are a dark handsome forest green with matching bean pods. When the beans mature and are dried, the bean pods turn a metallic brass color and begin making clinking noises like metal keys being gently jingled. The beans are buttery and taste slightly coppery.
Slime fruit: the tree these fruits grow on has long drooping leaves and a grey ish pale bark. It requires lots of water and often grows along rivers ponds and lakes. To deter predators, the fruits are covered in a thick layer of foul tasting mucus. The fruits inside are brown, about the size of cherries and have a peachy taste to them. Slime fruit is like crack to slime monsters for some reason. They just really love the stuff
Sun lotus: grown on lily pads only found in Underwest originally, the sun lily produces a gorgeous large yellow and orange lotus flower. The magic flower opens during the day, slowly charging, and stays open at night glowing brightly using the sunlight it absorbed. The petals are edible and often candied due to their citrusy taste. It was customary for Underwest monsters and humans to propose with a bouquet of sun lotus flowers, but the human tradition of wedding rings are becoming more popular these days
Chickweed: this herb grows about 2 feet tall and has beige circular leaves. Its magical properties seem to target birds mostly. When it’s ready to spread its seeds, the herb makes chirping noises attracting any nearby birds urging them to pluck and eat the leaves where the seeds are attached. Chickweed is completely edible from the leaves to the roots. It’s mild tasting and a tiny bit salty. It’s delicious in stir fry’s
Maple staples: this pepper from the farm AUs grows during the fall and comes in a beautiful variety of reds oranges and golds. It has a curly tip and spiked top resembling a maple leaf shape. The seeds of the pepper are incredibly spicy and can induce fevers, however they’re incredibly useful in fighting off viruses so are used in medicine. The flesh of the pepper is has a savory almost beefy taste. For some reason they can only grow around maple trees.
Shiftberries: a Grimm monster crop, these berries are white during the daytime, and glow various colors at night in a set timed pattern. They provide night vision to anyone who eats them for a few hours, making the berries a staple to Grimm humans and monsters who don’t see completely in the dark. They taste like blueberries but with the texture of blackberries. It wasn’t until the crash that the Grimm monsters realized the berries changed colors with the moon cycle
Spicy-ice fruit: this long banana like fruit is crimson red and has shifting flickering colors in the skin resembling fire. However it’s cold to the touch, so much so it even lowers the temperature of other foods it’s paired with. It makes cooking with heat impossible, but is delicious in chilled desserts. It tastes like milk and cashews with a touch of honey.
Stormelon: a cantaloupe sized melon from the outer AUs. This fruit has a translucent shell showing the purple liquid inside. The juice of the fruit has a sparkly swirling pattern and occasionally, lightning shaped sparks appear inside. It was created crossing gauzeberries with an ancient melon crop the monsters took with them before being banished to space. For some reason it gives the drinker their own small gravitational pull, making little objects float around them. The juice of the melon is sour and very strong tasting.
Jelly chilies: a purple circular pepper that seems to taste sweeter with every chew. Despite the sweet sugary taste, one seems to feet hot and sweaty as you eat. The pepper naturally makes one sweat, making it helpful for colds, or loosing weight!
Livestock
Burrowing sloth: this animal is a working animal of the grims. With the body of an anteater and the furless pink skin of a mole rat, the ugly animal is about the size of a donkey. It has huge front claws and can burrow through dirt and even stone with ease. It’s trained to mix up the dirt to reveal bugs and get it ready for planting. The hides of the burrowing sloth also make a fine durable leather, although not the prettiest.
Diary roach: the dairy roach is a breed of giant cockroach, the size of a small sheep, that can be milked every morning. You can credit this monstrosity to a rather morbid gorgon from horrorfarm. The milk of these bugs is low calorie and quite sweet making it a lovely drink
Honeypot: a breed of large working ant, developed in the bird AUs. The people there needed an animal that can safely travel along the cliffsides. Bugs seemed to climb well, and careful breeding made this large dog sized ant. They’re intelligent and loyal and can be trained to carry small loads and fetch or sniff out items. Their abdomens too act as a nectar storage. The ants are over fed in surplus years, and “milked” during harder times for the sugary syrup in their storage gland.
Honeybarrels: after the crash, an entrepreneur from the farm AUs took the honeypot ant and created a new breed, the honey barrel. This ant was bred to have a bigger and bigger storage gland, to the point here the ant when fully fed can no longer move. Many consider the breed to be unethical yet the animals are being spread around the farmlands of ebott as an easy way to harvest the sugary nectar uses as sweeteners from the ants.
Battle buns: from horrorfarm and drakefell, these rabbits are the size of a standard hog and trained to carry small monster passengers. They’re speedy, going up to 40 mph when sprinting. And they’re bold as heck, bravely fighting against any threats for their masters. The rabbits are still used today for smaller soldiers in the royal guard!
Dragons beard: a parasitic worm that resides in mushrooms, this bug is a native to the Drake AUs. It’s delicious with a Smokey meaty flavor, but raising them can be tricky. It wasn’t until giant amanita were found after the crash that a good way to farm the worms was created. They reproduce asexually depending on the size or the mushroom. A skilled farmer can have hundreds of these worms in one giant amanita
Pygmy mammoth: this small fluffy elephant is about the size of a standard turkey. They’re adorable, and slowly growing into a popular pet breed. On the farm, the elephants are sheared every winter and the whool spun into yard and thread. They also can be milked, and produce an extremely dense fatty milk.
What kind of meals/food can you only find in Ebbott? (And be specific! Don't just say "magic" Ratsoh)
lets start with a list of all old (and some new) ebott only crops and animals:
Powder shrooms: these are gears favorite mushrooms. It’s a small honey colored mushroom with a black circle on the head. They have a very nice buttery taste and can be eaten raw but are best as stuffing for savory dishes. They get the name because they dry fast and the powder was used as flour for the nomads. They also grow like weeds and are easy to maintain
Snap root: it was showcased in the 1k event. It’s a spiny purple skinned root with a brown flesh. It gets its name from the way the vines “snap” up when sunlight hits it. The root has a lovely taste like a cross between pumpkin, sweet potato, and nutmeg and is mostly used in pies and sweet dishes
Crab “apples”: a fruit shaped like a crab. It’s technically not an apple despite the similar taste. It’s the most common fruit of the underground and the farmtale valley. The fruits are slightly sour and rarely larger than the palm of a small hand. The most common shape is the crab shape, but they also come in ducks, pyramids and spirals.
Flossy sticks: it’s a celery like vegetable. The plant looks like a normal leafy bush with very long stems, but as soon as you cut one stem off, it explodes into thousands of tiny floss like strands. They can be boiled into pasta, dried and powdered to be used as flour, or eaten raw. They have a crisp lemon and basil like taste.
Twigs: nobody knows why the vegetable is called this because it looks nothing like a twig. It’s a large orange long cucumber like vegetable. Normally about 3 feet long and 6 inches wide. It has a woodsy tea leaf taste to it. Also puréeing the flesh and mixing it with alcohol is what makes drinks that can temporarily change hair and eye color.
Lion lily: the fruit is named after the striking maned flowers that come before it. The flowers look like lilies but at the base of the flower is a fluffy golden “mane” of cotton strands. The fruit is the size of a tangerine and is golden and perfectly round with a large pit in the middle. It has an extremely sweet taste and soft juicy flesh. It’s so sweet it often doesn’t need sugar added when used in cakes and pies.
Golems salad: a massive fkn head of kale. Like this thing is freaking the size of a car. It’s a magical variety that grows when eight heads of kale are planted in a circle, and carefully nurtured by a golem monster each day. The result is that monstrosity. Overnight the kale comes together, morphing into one plant and will grow to monstrous sizes. It’s said the bigger the salad the stronger the golem
Tumblers: it’s identical to a normal cabbage and tastes like a normal cabbage, but if you wait too long to harvest it, it will literally jump out of the ground and run away at the vibrations of footsteps. It also hisses.
Sweet salt: a spice from the underground that is ground from the seeds of the fir trees that grow in snowdin. It’s very sweet and is described to taste like a blend of brown sugar, cinnamon and black pepper. Tastes like gyftmas
Gyftmas ornaments: the same seeds you can get from snowdins fir trees can also be peeled and pickled. They make a lovely sweet sour treat and are usually dyed to match gyftmas colors.
Tarotile: a flat leaf from a magical plant related to poison ivy. The plant is toxic to humans but delicious to monsters. It’s banned outside of ebotts shores, and has to be labelled very clearly before being sold. Monsters describe it as tasting like a delicious wild berry blend but with a leafy texture. Makes a delicious tea and is wonderful in sweet salads
Sea eggs: an ebott only variety of seaweed will grow these pockets of soft cucumber like fruit in the stalks. Reportedly all the sea monsters have seen and harvested this plant before the crash. It tastes a bit more sour and citrusy than a normal cucumber but has all the texture and water content of one. Weirdly enough there’s nothing magic about this plant. It just likes ebott
Cattails: not to be confused with the non magical reeds that grow near water, cattails is a popular vegetable grown in ebott. It prefers dryer land, only wanting water every few days. It resembles a golden long grass, and when it’s ready to harvest, the grass ends open up to reveal a fluffy thick fiber inside. The result is a pretty feathery plant resembling a cats tail, hence the name. Pull the fibers and on the ends are little grains that are boiled to use a porridge, a flour substitute, or the binding agent of ebotts famous lion jello.
Heartyheads: a thick leafy bush, what makes it classed as magic is that it literally turns into rose quarts when exposed to fire. But it’s not reliable as a source of quarts since it slowly turns back when cooled down. The young leaves can only be eaten raw but are an amazing source of iron and are said to help with inflammation. This plant can only be killed by being dug out of the ground and left to dry out.
Fizzlers: a tomato like plant that grows small baby tomato sized pink, purple and blue fruits (ornamental ones only for blue) the fruit is a key ingredient in fizzy drinks in place of carbonation. The fruit produces lots of bubbles when exposed to water. They’re delicious and taste just like that fake grape flavor humans love
Gauzeberries: a berry that came from the outer-AUs. They all say they found the mysterious bush growing on the asteroids of the asteroid belt they orbited. The bush has silver white leaves, is very small, rarely growing higher than 2 feet, and produces small white berries encased in a gauzelike silk pouch. The plant only grows in cold temperatures and must be kept in fridge rooms with natural sunlight any month except winter. The berries have a crisp grape like taste and when eaten, causes one to float a few inches off the ground for an hour
Rougish grapes: this is a grape variety developed by two monsters from birdfell, and the rights bought by harpy. It’s a very large crimson red grape, each individual fruit nearly the size of an apricot, and is able to be harvested from summer to fall. The grapes have a sweet but peppery taste and are best fermented into wine. They are also proven to be amazing with hair loss.
Baited breath: a small thistle-like herb that grows beautiful thorny blue flowers. The flowers when they open in the mornings make a sighing noise, like someone exhaling. The seeds of this plant are sweet and aromatic, so are often added to a wide variety of dishes. They were also historically chewed on to clean teeth and are known to help humans and monsters alike recover from cavities
Dragons breath: the larger cousin to bated breath, this large thistle like herb grows to five feet and can make thorny black flowers the size of a humans head. The dragons breath flowers let out a brief puff of flame when they open in the morning, and their seeds are large and spicy in flavor. A very popular snack through all of ebott. They are also ground into a spice called dragons hoard.
Whimselites: this is a small bundle of leaves on a whimsot plant, a low growing vine. It was found in every underground au, and continues to be grown and harvested in the underground. If new leaf growths aren’t harvested, eventually the little bundles open up and pop off the mother plant to start a new one. They go great in salads and taste a lot like rocket leaves.
Snails Bane: the plant looks like a rock, but if you step on it, it’ll squish down secreting a snail like slime. It’s also very toxic to snails and should never be kept near them. The plant when cooked, is cut open and left to dry in the sun, before being sliced and put into stews as a flavoring agent. It tastes like chicken and is a favorite among ebotts vegetarians.
Loomy runners: a small magical radish that has two large roots at the end of its bulb. When exposed to fire, the radish will stand up on its roots and run away like a wobbly baby learning to walk. It must be cut up in pieces before being eaten, and sometimes the radish pieces will still flip around in the oven so covered baking dishes are recommended
Garwins Gourd: a large twisted gourd native to farmswap, garwins gourd is an attractive flamingo pink color when ripe and has a sweet taste not unlike a sweet potato. It can be cut up and puréed for pies or stews, boiled and mashed, or sautéed, but it cannot be eaten raw as heat is needed to bread down the thick fibers of the raw vegetable. The gourd also can be dried and is used as a cute storage container by many farm monsters. In recent years, fans of the plant have been able to grow yellow and orange varieties
Bloodroot: edible by monsters, but must be strained several times to be safe for human consumption, bloodroot is a thick large carrot like root that “bleeds” a crimson liquid when cut. The root eaten on its own tastes like a woody earthy grape mixed with a parsnip. It strangely smells like beef until cooked. The reasons for this is that the plant uses an animals digestive tract to strip the thick outer coat on its seeds. And when they come out the “other end” they can safely sprout when freed from their confines. Carnivorous animals are drawn to the root
Claymore mushroom: if directly stepped on by something heavy, this large blue grey mushroom will explode into large chunks catapulted into the air at speeds of up to 15 mph. It’s native to the factory monsters and farm AUs. The farmtale monsters made a winter sport of catapulting the mushrooms before the crash. The mushroom can be safely harvested by cutting it at the base of the stem, rendering it non-exploding.
Triangle of the coast: a magical cousin to broccoli and cauliflower, the triangle is a triangle shaped broccoli like growth that grows directly in the sand of beaches, and is farmed along a section of ebotts coastline in the winter months. The vegetable is a yellowish green color and tastes just like young broccoli. And for some reason, when picked, it secretes a pheromone that attracts crustacean sea creatures. so it’s also used as fish bait and a vegetable
Ferris-weeds: a cousin to the yarrow herb, Ferris weeds are a magical variety native to the farm and Drake AUs. It’s a tall growing herb, reaching up to 10 feet in height, and has a beautiful pale pink flower in the spring and summer. It’s mainly used to line fences as decor, but the flowers can also be eaten raw, pickled, or sautéed. What makes it magical is that it’s known to provide a full days worth of vitamin D in one meal, no matter the amount of flowers eaten. No one knows how the plant accomplished this
Pygmy pomegranates: this trees only been an official breed in the last five years. Developed by a monster from farmtale, Pygmy pomegranates are a cross breed between crab apples and standard pomegranates. They are perfectly dome shaped with a circle top and a completely flat bottom. The fruit is small, onky the size of a child’s fist, and full of orange pomegranate seeds with a purple skin. They taste just like a normal pomegranate
Deaths pearl: a small bundle of leaves, found deep in the ocean. The roots and lower halves of the leaves are pitch black, while the tips are a transparent blue. The vegetable gets its name from seafell, where a fraction of monsters fought to the death with a sea creature for a patch of the plants. This vegetable is completely edible from its roots, leaves, stems and seeds. It tastes very similar to celery mixed with cucumber. Nowadays it’s cultivated by sea monsters all along ebotts coast and is considered a staple vegetable due to being able to grow year round.
Star seeds: contrary to the name, this is not from the outer AUs but was an underground crop. The seeds of an echo flower are the plants only edible part, and are ground into a fine iron filled flour. They’re rather bitter though, so bread made from them nowadays is often paired with cheese to flavor it.
Spiderbloom: pollinated only by spiders, this plant flowers in the fall and produces fruits in the winter. It creates an eerie black and purple blossom who’s pollen only sticks to spider silk in order to pollenate. The fruits have a soft flesh and taste a bit like figs and blueberries.
Golden flowers: a favorite of the royals, and ebotts national flower and crop. Golden flowers are a beautiful gold magic buttercup that can be dried and turned into tea. They have a lovely effect of softening the hair and skin, and humans claim the tea helps with acne. It’s delicious, sweet and has small hints of lemon in the taste. The flowers are mostly indoor plants as they burn up in direct sunlight.
Mandrakes: a four point magical root that screams when unearthed, the mandrake root is extremely popular for its soft potato like flesh, and the large lineup of nutrients it holds. It’s often mashed, used as a potato substitute, or thrown into stews and soups. It’s a popular baby food as well as its mild taste is comforting for kids, and the quality of it helps parents ensure picky eaters get what they need in a meal
Frog stool mushroom: a large aquatic mushroom resembling a lily pad. It’s found in shallow freshwater areas like lakes and larger parts of streams. This large mushroom is nutty in flavor and is often planted in ponds by farmers for not only its flavor, but also to filter the water on their property to make it safe for the animals to drink. It’s recommended to only eat the small young ones as the large ones after so many years of filtering are more waste than nutrients.
Fishweed: a seaweed that grows along the seaside cliffs of ebott. It’s named after its strong fishy smell. It’s dried and cut into strips and eaten as a snack like jerky or chips
Pearwood tree: this tree has a beautiful bark pattern in the shape of sliced pears. When dry, the bark begins to chip and is easy to peel off. The bark can be infused into drinks giving a crisp grape and lettuce flavor, and has the magical effect of making harmless sparks come out of one’s mouth when they speak. Because of the attractiveness of the trees bark, and the pretty pale green fir spines as leaves, it’s also a popular garden ornament plant as well as a crop
Cinderpetals: a small magic herb with red tipped star shaped leaves. This plant as a defense mechanism will burst into flame when the leaves are picked off. Don’t be alarmed though, the fire is harmless and even adds to the flavor as many monsters say. The leaves have a crisp almost citrusy flavor and are put into potions, drinks and energy tonics due to their natural caffeine content.
Boarberry: it was only seen in horrorfarm and drakefell before the crash. It’s a wild berry bush that parasites off of trees, growing on the sides of the trunks. The berries are a creamy pale green and taste like a bitter plum. They were traditionally used to flavor meads, and were made into jams, pie fillings and baked into breads.
Honeybeans: a climbing magic bean plant that only grows near beehives. It will grow around the hive protecting the bees by secreting pheromones that deter would-be predators, and in return it feeds off the honey as well as the soil near the hive and sunlight. Because of this, the beans are deliciously sweet, tasting like caramel but with the buttery texture of a Lima bean. What makes this plant magic is that when seeds are planted, it seems to summon bees to it. Bees will abandon hives to start building around the bean, or if that’s not convenient enough, the bugs actually uproot the plant itself and Carries it to the hive in an amazing show of teamwork
Silver bells: a droopy vine with silver tipped leaves. It grows a berry like vegetable that resembles a tomato, but with a blue grey skin and a deep purple flesh. The magic fruit entices one to eat it by “calling” its harvester with a tinkling bell noise. The vegetables when hitting each other sound like the light clinking of metal. The vegetable is rather tasteless save for a faint cabbage flavor. It’s very beneficial to bone growth though and is highly recommended that young growing children and the elderly eat some every week.
Ground cherries: a strange magical fruit tree that grows its fruit beneath the soil. The very tip of the small cherry sized fruits are visible peeking through the dirt when they’re ready for harvest. They taste like blue. Some college human students say it’s the closest they’ve ever gotten to the taste of blue Gatorade in ebott
Ebott-only livestock:
Greater turkey: like the name suggests, this is just a massive variety of turkey. The birds can reach the size of cows. Naturally they’re a breed made by the farm AUs. They’re slowly becoming more popular as a holiday food for larger families. Last gyftmas broke the record of greater turkeys slaughtered and sold in one season. Thankfully for the farmers, these birds were bred for temperament as well and are quite gentle and docile
Jimmy crickets: they were previously called roasting crickets, but one witty monster renamed his after Disney started streaming in ebott, and the rest copied him as the bugs became a popular food for kids. It’s a magical variety of cricket that was cultivated underground. They eat moss, and are high in iron, copper, and folate. They’re brightly colored, most normally a bright red. They taste a bit like bacon bits.
Struggle grubs: like the name suggests, this bug was cultivated to be cheap, year round and plentiful. It’s a comfort food for many underground monsters who lived through poverty before the crash. The grubs will eat anything hence why they were labelled as “poor food” as underground they were fed mainly trash. Nowadays farmers feed them much healthier foods and the grubs are much better quality.
Riding/battle boars: funny enough, this type of domesticated hog was only found in horrorfell and drakefell before the crash. Many think that there’s a special connection between the two AUs cause this isn’t the only thing they share. In drakefell they were known as riding boars and were used to pull carts and plows, for eating and dairy, and battle of course. In horrorfarm they were only war animals, used to sniff out enemies and ram through enemy lines. The boar is intelligent like a dog, easily trained, and has an amazing sense of smell. They’re still used as farm hand animals to help plow and de-bug fields. The females can be milked and the cheese made from that milk is very heavy and fatty. They taste like pork, but because of their sacredness to the drakefell monsters and humans, it’s considered a big dishonor to eat one that didn’t die of natural causes.
Lesser deer: a small goat sized deer only found in ebott, they were originally found in the nomads forest. They’re very passive creatures and easily domesticated. Many farms are beginning to add them to livestock because of the delicious soft meat on the animals, and their varied diets.
Rolland’s horned snail: a large cow sized snail bred by the Rolland family from farmswap. The snails on average are the size of draft horses and can weigh nearly a ton. They’re bred purely for their meat and the shells are also sold as decoration, or ground as a binding agent mixed into cement. The snails are fed mainly sawdust, dried grass, and weeds. It takes nearly 20 years for one to reach full size though.
Pearled salmon: a freshwater salmon native to ebott, it can be caught wild or bought from a hatchery. The scales look like pale pink and white pearls underwater, but turn grey when dry. The salmon has a white flesh and the taste is subtler than normal salmon.
Ice pips: this is a thin needle like magic fish that loves cold temperatures so much it creates its own chill. Any room the fish is kept in stays just cold enough to freeze the top of the water in its tank, but not so cold to freeze the whole tank. It is a farmers essential for any farmers who want a proper freezer basement or shed. Almost every farm monster owns a tank of them as it’s much cheaper to feed a few fish crickets every couple days than it is to pay electric for a large shed/room. Rancher and peaches have a tank of pips in their basement, and harpy has a whole massive storage shed cooled by her own tank.
Gremlins: small quail sized ugly little creatures that resemble a cross between a toad, gopher and pug, with wrinkled faces, round bodies and bumpy hairless skin. These little creatures are extremely easy to train and are used on farms to control bug pest levels. They are also slowly gaining popularity as a household pet because of their friendly natures. What makes this animal magic is its tongue which can stretch and shoot out nearly 12 feet at a time in pursuit of a big. Which is clearly magic as the tongue is only a few inches long when resting in the body, and when (gently) pulled by an outside force, it barely gets out of the mouth. A gremlin is edible as well, tasting like chicken by most reports, but farmers who raise them dislike eating the critters as they often can’t help but start viewing them as family.
Land shrimp: it’s literally a shrimp that survives on land. They’re fast breeders and must be kept indoors to prevent an outbreak. They’re fed a mixture of grain, oats, bone, and unwanted meat cuts. The magic shrimp will resort to cannibalism if not fed on time, so require dedication to raise. And yes, they taste like normal shrimp
Smithers basilisk: a long bodied lizard that’s roughly the size of a basset hound, the Smithers basilisk’s true origins are unknown, but have been a common livestock animal for generations among the Drake monsters and humans. The large lizards have a poison sack behind the eyes that are removed after they hatch for safety purposes. They’re raised for a number of reasons: their scaled hides make great leather, the eggs are large and females can lay year round if there’s a male in the pack, and they’re great ratters. So many farmers keep a few to help control the pests on their farm.
Jeweled scarabs: both an animal raised as livestock and a popular pet, these palm sized beetles have stunning shells in a beautiful glossy array of colors looking just like crystal. They’re raised primary for the shells which are harvested when the beetles die of old age. The shells are broken and polished to be used as jewelry, decoration, tile and even used in pottery and glazes. They have a short lifespan of just 2 years sadly, hence why they don’t beat out snails as the most popular pet. The bodies of the beetles are also ground and used as feed for other animals needing protein in their diets.
Roc birds: a poultry bird native to the bird AUs, this was a fat flightless bird that is accustomed to living on rocky cliffs. It has very strong talons and legs in order to climb and move around safely. And a huge oversized beak strong enough to break rocks. The birds are about the size of a duck and have grey speckled feathers. They were bred for their eggs and meat, the hens laying several a day. But they’re difficult to raise as they’re aggressive.
Wooly snails: these snails are about the size of a standard goose when fully grown, and the shells grow a thick fur that needs to be peeled off every few weeks to keep the snail comfortable and mobile. The pelts are then throughly washed and used for clothing, pillow filler, and all other kinds of things. The snails come in a variety of colors with white being the most common, but also a powder blue and lilac. They’re raised mostky by monsters at the top of ebotts mountain range as the snails need cool temperatures to be healthy
Dwarf rock bees: ebott’s special bee variety, the only bee known to be underground. The dwarf rock bee resembles a black fluffy bumblebee, but is so small it can barely cover Abraham Lincoln’s face on a penny. The bees will only create hives in stone structures (or around a honey bean plant) and hives can host millions of bees at a time. The tiny fluff balls are stingless and extremely prone to predators as they had very few underground. When alarmed, they make a shrill buzzing noise together, and copy a frequency that they know scares animals away. For most hives, that means turning their buzzing into a car alarm. Some enthusiasts of the bee keep them indoors in smaller controlled hives and have even trained the bees to copy songs that are repeated often around them. And of course they make honey
Alrighty! There are three ways one can make magical food!
1: it’s a learned magic to add intent to food. Every monster learns it as children. It’s just one of those things your parents are supposed to teach you, like driving or how to clean.
Intent affects the foods taste and sometimes even gives it mild healing properties. So someone making a batch of cookies with a lot of love and passion can make some hecking fine cookies. However there’s a limit. Pour too much passion (or any type of intent really) and you’ll burn the food. Even if you’re not using heat to cook.
This is why undyne regularly nukes her kitchen
2: plants can become magical after several generations of being exposed to magic. That’s why the underground was able to host so many plant varieties despite the lack of sunlight. This can’t really be controlled since it happens randomly. Any food cooked with the plants has magical properties as well
3: the farmtale monsters have perfected earth magic over the centuries. Any native born farmtale monster has the ability to bond to the land they own and produce much higher quality, quantity, and magical produce. This includes animals too. They become more docile, intelligent, and produce more. The magical skill of bonding to your land is seen as familial magic and can only be passed down through blood
And finally, some famous drinks and dishes only found in ebott!!!
Gauzeberry freeze: the expensive but delicious drink consists of milk, shaved ice, honey, blueberries, coconut and of course gauzeberries. It’s sold only in special occasions like national holidays. Otherwise the only way to get it is to make it at home, which is quite difficult due to the nature of gauzeberries. It does make one float a few inches off the ground for an hour after drinking
Fries and bits: mixed bugs, most commonly crickets, are cleaned and fried with potato wedges, and in fancier dishes, onion rings and fried artichoke hearts are added. It’s a greasy but delicious meal and many fried fast food places sell this dish
Boars honor stew: a dish coming from drakefell. When a drakes boar dies, whether from old age, an injury, or sickness, never intentionally slaughtered for food, their burial ritual for the animal is to stew it in a massive pot filled with potatoes, other root vegetables, blood root, boar berries, dragons breath and a load of mushrooms. The boar is carefully cleaned, and the blood used to fertilize the drakes, or communities crops. Then the animal is put in the pot whole and stewed for around four days before being passed around and eaten. It’s a dish meant to be shared, not bought. So to be offered some is a great honor
Roc on rocks: it requires a roc bird for the traditional version of the dish, but chicken will do too for a close substitute. The breast meat of a roc bird is thinly sliced and marinated in an orange citrus sauce for a few hours. Then traditionally a flat rock is heated up, and the thin slices are cooked on top, then laid on a bed of cabbage and thinly sliced carrots before being served. However pan frying is a safe at home substitute if one doesn’t have a big rock and outdoor campfire
Golden pearwood tea cake: goldenflowers and pearwood bark are dried and made into tea. The tea must be strained and left in the fridge to chill while the cake base is created. It’s preferred to use a nut flour like almond or hazelnut. The cake flour is then moistened with the tea, and a light honey glaze is added on top when it comes out of the oven
Cinder-spark: a popular energy drink brand made in ebott from cinderpetals. It comes in three flavors: jalapeño, spicy strawberry and electric orange. All flavors are spicy with electric orange being the mildest. Never drink more than two a day
Treasure chests: a shiny beautiful salad dish of heartyheads, leafy greens, beets, sea eggs, deaths pearl, and topped with cooked pearled salmon. It’s a beautiful colorful dish and a favorite at seafood restaurants along seashore. And it’s extremely nutritious
Snaproot pockets: like the name suggests, it’s a little baked pouch filled with puréed snaproot. It’s created with either mochi flour or cattail flour, the little flour pouch is filled with mashed or puréed snap root, and is topped with seeds like sesame after being baked. This dish can also be made with pumpkin and garwins gourds instead of snaproot.
Lions jello: made from boiled cattails, and infused with goldenflower tea, this is ebotts national desert. The cattails make an attractive milk white jello with a light airy taste, and the goldenflower adds flavor and speckles of gold inside. It’s a beautiful dessert and is a favorite of many of the royals
Snail pie: ebotts national dish: this is a pie filled with cubed snail meat, pearled onions, garlic, many spices to taste, and spinach. The pie is baked like a normal pot pie and is usually topped with seeds for better looks. Mini versions are sold at festivals and food trucks, and kids in public school get mini snail pies on Fridays for lunches.
Silver broth: made from boiled silver bells and bones, this broth is a popular soup base because of its mild taste, and is highly recommended that parents use it when cooking for their children as it promotes healthy bone, teeth and ecto growth. In winter months too, it’s sold alone as a savory drink with sliced dried mushrooms and spring onions as an alternative to sugary hot drinks
Wailing baby mash: it’s a terrible name but parents seem to think it’s funny. Mandrakes are mashed with other veggies (and often a bit of silver broth is added) to make a soft baby food safe for monsters and human babies old enough for solid food. It has a mild taste which is pleasant for kids. Many parents used mashed mandrakes in place of mashed potatoes well into their kids childhood as a healthier and cheaper alternative
Goths on toast: another terrible name, Asgore really sucks at naming things, and he’s to blame for this one as the creator asked him to endorse the dish. A delicious spread is made from the fruit of a spiderbloom, blackberries and dark or ground cherries. The fruit spread is spiced with a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg and spread on bread as a sweet morning breakfast. It’s often paired with fancy cheeses and is served as a dish to show off your class. No charcuterie board in ebott is complete without this spread
Pigment potion: twigs mixed with alcohol creates a magic drink that can change the color of one’s ecto, hair/fur and eyes. The more diluted the drink, the shorter the effect. And to control what color the drink becomes, it needs to be hand made with a certain color in mind. A drink of magic, intent and booze. Any sort of alcohol does fine so usually cheap wine is used. And in festivals, watered down versions are allowed to be sold to children as long as a parent is present
Gyftmas cookies: of course they have to be baked with sweet salt. These brown cookies are made with the sweet salt spice, molasses, plain flour and honey. They’re decorated of course and are part of a popular gyftmas tradition called the cookie trade. At parties, each family shows up with a plate of cookies, and they go around having to swap one of their cookies on the plate for one from another’s family. By the end of the party, they go home with a plate from multiple families.
Crabby patties: this name was popular way before SpongeBob was introduced to ebott. There was a fierce legal battle between Marcelo and Nickelodeon for him to keep the name of the popular dish sold at his grocery stores. He just barely won, and the name is only allowed to be used with free reign in ebott lol. Crabby patties are smoked crab apple thinly sliced and pickled, then placed on a slab of either cooked snail or cooked hamburger patty. The bun is traditionally wrapped cabbage leaves, but bread buns are more popular on the surface these days. Every hamburger place has a crabby patty burger on their menu.
Fae floss: pasta from boiled flossy sticks is topped with a thick brown sauce made from goats cheese, powder shrooms, and finely chopped herbs. Other mushrooms are added to the pasta and often bugs like grubs, chopped beetles or worms are added. If bugs aren’t your cup of tea, shredded chicken is fine instead
Mead of lady magic: this mead is flavored with pomegranate seeds and honey beans to make a rich mild drink. It was also used in rituals by the temple monsters before the crash, and is still considered a holy drink by them. Only made and drank on sacred days.
Sun therapy: this light sandwich is made with pickled Ferris weed flowers, salami and mozerella cheese. The sandwich is toasted and topped with more cheese. A delicious meal full of vitamin D
Tarotile cheesecake. A plain slice of cheesecake, colored a deep forest green by adding Tarotile to the cooking process. The cake tastes like a wonderful wild berry blend according to monsters, but is highly toxic to humans and mages. Any one who dares sell it to a human without signed consent can be arrested and held for trial on attempted bodily harm.

Tangled Salt Marathon - The Lost Treasure of Herz Der Sonne
So now we get to what is, in my opinion, the best episode in season three. However, it’s still season three, so that’s damning with faint praise.
Summary: Rapunzel tasks the kingdom with refurbishing the throne room. While breaking down a wall, they find a map to the Lost Treasure of Herz Der Sonne and Rapunzel decides to set up a race to the location. The teams, which consist of twos, are only allowed to look at the map briefly before the start of the race. However, Rapunzel's partner, Feldspar, brings a copy of the map with him and he warns her that the treasure is cursed.
Why Are You Just Getting to This Now?
It’s literally been months since you defeated the Saporians. Edmund had to have time to travel all this way to Corona and you’ve rebuilt an entire village since then. We’re talking at bare minimum three months or more.
Who just leaves a gapping hole inside their home for three months? Where did you conduct the government’s important business during that time? Is there any other structural damage to the castle or the town outside from previous battles that you’ve just left unattended? I understand that rebuilding Old Corona is important but those villagers have been evacuated and living elsewhere for a year and a half now since Queen for a Day. It wasn’t a priority, but this is.
Also this episode has to come after The Return of the King and Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf because Red, Angry, and Hamuel exist. It can’t just be slotted in somewhere else in order for it to make more sense. The writers genuinely planned for Rapunzel to be this disorganized and didn’t think to give a logical reason as to why.
Also Why Are You Conscripting Regular Citizens Instead of Hiring Professional Contractors?
Unlike Old Corona, which is a full on community that would require multiple building projects going on simultaneously and therefore could use volunteers, this is a single government building. It’s Rapunzel’s job as leader to make sure that that building is kept maintained and up to code. It’s her responsibility not the regular average citizen’s who has their own jobs to do and zero experience with construction.
Rapunzel is literally forcing these people to be slave labor for her under the pretense of ‘community’. She’s taking their time away from their own busy lives, forcing them to work a dangerous job, and not compensating them for that time, effort, and risk. And no, they’re not just volunteers at this point; because as acting queen, no one can safely say no to her nor can they just leave even when they’re clearly annoyed and fed up at having to do the work.
Lastly they’re untrained. They lack the skills and tools to this job. You need an architect, you need a safety inspector, you need actual carpenters and masonries ... maybe even an interior decorator... The point is you need trained professionals and part of being an administrator is using government funding to hire these people in order to make sure the work gets done safely and efficiently and create jobs and keep money circulating through the economy.
Rapunzel may not mean any harm. She might just be oblivious and untrained herself. But this is terrible leadership and the show never points that out. It never has her learn how to be a better a ruler so by the end of the series you don't feel she’s earned that title of Queen and you fear for the kingdom’s continued existence.
So Why Is This Here?
Why would there be a Saporian map to a king of Corona’s tomb hidden in the wall? What’s the story behind this?
Yes we know his wife was Saporian, but that doesn’t explain anything. Why would she need a map on the wall to her own husband’s resting place; assuming he didn’t out live her himself. Why would said map be carved into the wall of Corona’s castle and not written on a scroll? Why is it in Saporian when they don't speak that language in Corona?
Like I could come up with explanations and create this whole backstory for Herz Der Sonne and the first Saporian/Coronian War, but at this point I’d just be doing the work of the writers for them. They’re the ones who introduced this lore and had it inform plot points and character motivation; and then failed to explain any of it to the audience and adequately have it all connect back together in a way that makes sense.
The Moment When You Realize This Whole Episode Exists Because Zachary Levi Enjoys Doing an Ed Wynn Impersonation
Ok time to explain some behind the scenes Info.
This is Ed Wynn.
As you can tell from the gif above, he’s famous for voicing the Mad Hatter in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. He’s also done a whole bunch of other stuff and was well known even before working with Disney, but the Mad Hatter is his most well remembered role today.
Many actors, particularly voice actors, like to do impressions of him because he has such a distinctive voice. Including Eugene’s VA, Zachery Levi.
Now I don’t know if the character of Feldspar was created specifically because the creators were inspired by Zachery Levi’s impression, or if they had this character already planned out and just casted him in the role since he could do it and it’d save them money. Either scenario is plausible and not unheard of in animation. But the long and short of it is, as a shoemaker, Feldspar is intended to be a parody of the Mad Hatter. That is why the character exists.
Now as I said, this isn’t unusual for animated tv shows. Quite often you get main cast members to voice secondary and/or one off characters because it’s convenient, efficient, and doable when working with audio recordings. Also quite often voice actors will do impressions of other famous people to flesh out these background characters. It’s also not out of left field for these secondary characters to get an episode of focus if they’ve been around for awhile and keep popping up in the story.
What is unusual, however, is to focus on said character in the final season when there are a bunch of other more important characters with unresolved arcs that need the screen time more. It’s an incredibly odd decision to highlight Feldspar here when we still got Varian readjusting back into society, Red and Angry settling into their new home, and Edmund running around off screen. And while some of these character feature in the episode, they’re just there for the jokes not for any development.
What’s a “Sap Pond” and How Does That Even Work?
Ok its a fantasy world, I get it. But the franchise does try to have a distinction between the magical and the mundane. Or at least pretends to try and have a distinction. There’s to my knowledge no such thing as a ‘sap pond’, and if such a thing does exist I doubt it’s an actual deep pit full of tree sap as shown here.
If you want characters to still be surprised by out of the ordinary occurrences and have the supernatural world be separate from the regular world; then you need to have the mundane world grounded in our known reality. Nature needs to function as real world nature would. If something exists in your world that doesn't in ours, then you need to either explain it or have the characters responded appropriately to it.
But You’re a Prince Now?
Look, I’ll buy that season one Eugene didn’t have unlimited access to the royal treasury as he and Rapunzel were still new to their roles and their relationship. But it’s been over two years since the movie ended.
Since then Eugene and Rapunzel have lived together, shared finances together, and currently are co-acting rulers of the kingdom. He’s also a bonified prince in of itself on top of being practically married to princess/queen.
Yeah I said it. Part of what makes season three so frustrating is that Rapunzel and Eugene are functionally married at this point, they just haven’t gone through the ceremony yet, and there’s no stated reason for why they keep dragging things out.
This is why we get out of place jokes like this that no longer reflect who Eugene is now as a person and feel like they belong back in season one or the even the movie itself.
I can understand if he wanted to join in the competition because it’s fun, but he’s not poor. Neither he nor Rapunzel needs the treasure. I’m not sure even Lance needs it because as Eugene’s best friend/adopted brother he’s piratically nobility at this point as well.
Royalty and the rich are not and never will be underdogs show. Stop trying to make them such.
So Why Feldspar Again?
This is such a half assed plot point.
Remember Rapunzel literally pulled out a book earlier to translate the map. Xavier not only knows the legends about the Saporians, but also keeps a book of magic lying around, and the Saporians are the only human people who have functioning magic in the show as part of their culture. Varian spent a year living and working with the Saporian leader, and knows how to decipher ancient scrolls written in dead languages. And said Saporians, are being currently held in the dungeons of the castle.
But you’re telling me that only a random cobbler can read the warning clearly written on the map?
They give some bullshit reason as to why Feldspar knows Sapoprian but it doesn’t matter. It’s a forced and contrived excuse to get the character involved in a plot he has no business being in. The story fails to justify the use him over the other more prominent characters who have closer ties to this particular subplot.
And We’re Suppose to Believe That Herz Der Sonne Was a Good Guy?
Why would a benevolent king who supposedly brought peace to a warring land have a doomsday curse involving zombies? Why would said king be enshrined a tomb that’s not native to his culture? What even is the treasure and why be buried with it?
There’s clearly more going on here regarding Corona’s past and the treatment of the Saporians as a people in their own right, but the show never does anything with it. Why introduce these complexities and world building if you’re not going to tell a story with them? Why have the Saporian subplot at all in a series already over stuffed with villains if you aren’t going to have them challenge your protagonist and have her grow into a more mature person?
I’m not dunking on the series for being ambitious nor for having flavor text to help flesh out the world, but it so aggravating that there’s no follow through on the show’s set ups and narrative promises. If you’re not going to give the needed focus to something then just don’t put it in. Cause once it’s aired you’re committed to it and the audience is going to hold you to account.
I haven’t seen plot mismanagement this bad since the 80s; back when cartoons had to battle network syndication, episode commissions instead of contracted seasons, and could be canceled at any time without prior notice. Now there’s still plenty of bad practices going on in the industry, especially as the move to streaming messes with things, but Tangled does not have the same excuses as say Johnny Quest, Dungeons and Dragons, or even Gargoyles did.
How Do You Even Know That Would Work, Rapunzel?
No seriously, how does Rapunzel know that putting the treasure chest back on the pedestal will stop the cruse? That hasn’t been established yet by any known source of information. Heck no one knew what the curse actually entailed until it was activated. Except for Xavier who oh so conveniently didn’t say anything until the last moment. If anyone should have the knowledge to on how to end the curse it’s him. But nope we gotta make the Rapunzel the infallible hero who is always right for no logical reason.
I don’t know how to explain this to you show, but perfect is boring. No one wants a flawless protagonist who can do it all 24/7 without any help whatsoever. And it becomes down right annoying to watch a hero who is clearly flawed still put upon a narrative pedestal as if they weren’t.
So Why is Varian Suddenly Useless In This Fight?
This entire climax is about showcasing the ‘power of teamwork’ by having the characters use their various skills sets and work together to defeat the enemy.
Except for Varian.
He’s treated at best as a spectator to the unfolding events and at worst as a damsel in distress.
Varian. You know the guy who is the series most competent and threating antagonist. Who brought an entire kingdom to it’s knees, twice. The only other character besides Rapunzel herself who could and does hold his own against other major antagonists, including super powered ones.
If this was just a one off incident, I’d just shrug it away as him being a glass cannon; insanely overpowered when well prepared but easily out of his depth when not. But that’s not what’s happening here.
Season three constantly nerfs Varian’s abilities, same as they did back in The Alchemist Returns, and there’s three reasons for this.
The first is to try and stop him from overshadowing Rapunzel and Cassandra. The writers don’t want to give him any more story focus for fear of him being more popular the the two girls. Which is a ridiculous and petty reason to write a character OOC but there you go.
The second is the on going issue of making Rapunzel needlessly the center of any and all solutions to every problem regardless of her level of involvement in the initial conflict. Yes, it’s her show, but she’s still not the whole world. Other people exist outside of her and it’s not fair to anybody when the writers ignore that simple fact.
Last is the writers sacrificing established character for a joke. And as already pointed out, even in this very review, Varian’s not the only character to fall victim to this. It’s just bad writing. Yeah the joke might be funny in the moment but you run the risk of jarring you’re audience’s immersion. In a series like Tangled where you’re constantly asking the audience to suspend their disbelief, humor needs to be firmly rooted in the characters natural behaviors and must evolve to match any character development.
Why not just have Varian throw a chimball or two, run out cause he wasn’t planning on fighting anybody that day, and then have the other characters rescue him? It’s not that hard to work in a joke while still being respectful of the characters.
So What Does Anybody Learn From This Episode?
Yeah the other characters learn some vague lesson on teamwork and getting along or something, but they’re not the focus of the episode. What do Rapunzel and Feldspar learn?
Unlike some people I don’t mind Feldspar’s existence. When’s he’s kept as a background character he works. In fact he’s one of the few townspeople who do work as intended, because he’s representative of the everyday citizen who’s often on the outside looking in on these fantastical events and therefore gives insight into what’s going on and the populous’ opinions on things without being a major player in anything.
That's fine, needed even, and I don’t mind him getting a single focus episode to gain a greater insight into how this world works or even flesh out his character more, but that’s not what we got. Feldspar doesn’t grow as a character because of this episode. I, as the viewer watching, learn nothing about him nor his life that I didn’t already know. This resolution with him resolves nothing cause it’s a ending for a conflict that was never established beforehand.
In fact what even was the main conflict of the story? Rapunzel being annoyed by Feldspar? Ok and..? Did she need to learn not to be annoyed by him? Was that a thing that needed to be addressed? Hasn’t Rapunzel already put up with annoying people before now? Was was this deficiency of character actually solved by this one interaction? Has she learned to be more appreciative, attentive, or open minded of others?
If you tell me it’s Rapunzel’s show then I expect Rapunzel to actually learn shit!
I expect the external conflicts to tie back into her interpersonal conflicts. If the external conflict does not do that than there better well be a another character who gets that focus instead without her hogging the limelight.
This Dynamic Adds Nothing
They set up this friendship with Varian and Xavier and it doesn't go anywhere. It never comes back into play and we never see them interacting on screen together again. It also undermines a future plot point that’s coming up later.
More over it doesn’t further either of their characters.
Xavier is still an extraneous exposition fairy. Turning his flat characterization into a one note joke does not erase that fact. Giving him a kid to tell stories to doesn’t explain his place in the narrative or give him purpose to the story. We still don’t know why he has these connections to magic nor how he knows all the this lore, and he doesn’t push the plot forward.
Meanwhile Varian maybe lonely but that doesn’t mean he needs yet another mentor figure in his life. We already have his father, who we barely see him interact with since coming back, and all his other ‘friends’ are way older then him already as well. Rapunzel’s the closest in age to him and she is constantly condescending to, well everybody, as she pretends to be more mature than she actually is. There’s no one in the story who Varian is on equal footing with, and no Angry and Red don't count as they’re far younger than him.
I don’t know what this series has against teenagers but it showcases some very unhealthy depictions of them; ether by constantly infantilizing them, traumatizing them while subjecting them to parentification, or just flat out ignoring their existence all together.
Teenagers exist and they need to be treated as teenagers. I don’t know how to put it more simply than that. Teens aren’t children. Teens aren’t adults. They’re teens. And when writing for them you need to understand that difference and acknowledge that they have a completely different phycological development and placement within society to anybody else. That’s why the category of adolescence exists separately from childhood and adulthood in the first place.
So to tie things back to the first point. The concept of Xavier and Varian having a friendship is not a problem. But as with so many things on this show, it’s the surrounding context and lack of follow through where the issues arises.
Varian needs a friend his age, who is his equal, more so than a mentor; if indeed Xavier is even intended to serve that function as he doesn’t do any real mentoring. This should have been an opportunity to bring Faith in and establish her better. In fact it’s reasons like this why she should have been a bigger character all along but we’ll get more into that as we get to her only ‘focus’ episode.
Conclusion
It’s fun seeing all the various character interactions and unique team ups. Also the humor does work. The jokes do land even if they do bulldoze through established canon. Plus seeing Rapunzel actually annoyed by shit going on around her is always entertaining as it humanizes her. If watched in isolation from the rest of season three, this is an enjoyable episode. But that’s it’s core problem. I shouldn’t have to find filler to keep me going in the last leg of the show.
This was pretty short comparatively speaking with the rest of the ones I have to write for S3, but longer ones are going to come out more slowly just due to real life and time. As always though you’re support is helpful in keeping going, and if you feel like you can donate to my Ko-fi and leave a tip there.

So, as some of you may know, I’ve recently gotten back onto discord with a ghost group, and, well, I’ve been dumping headcanons on there left and right. So, for posperity, I feel this calls for a Discord headcanon dump:
CHARACTER HEADCANONS
To sum up, the difference between Papa II and Papa I in one sentence. Papa I is sour, while Papa II is bitter.
To elaborate a bit on this, Papa I is sour, not by nature, but because of the role he was given. Ever since he filled the role as Papa and undid a lot of changes, Nihil had done under his reign - he was branded as a monster, an asshole, the works. For a time, he tried to fight this, but eventually, he became what they described him as. Nowadays, he's a reclusive man, withdrawn and cold, with acidic wit and a sharper tongue.
Meanwhile, Papa II is, well, I don't know how to describe him briefly. He's hurt, really hurt, he was robbed of a lot of what he was supposed to have, a childhood, adolescence, a loving family, etc. and he's become embittered because of it. Furthermore, he doesn't really let go of his pain, he holds on to it and his grudges... He's just a hot mess is what I'm saying.
A lot of Papa II's ridiculous and 'embarrassing' behaviour during infesstissumam was being driven by spite - I mean, the Ghost project was Nihil's - what greater revenge would it be to make it a complete joke, especially when you consider the Clergy gave him the shortest period possible as an 'opening act' for III.
This backfired, of course, and it helped the Ghost project immensely, casting a shadow III would never be able to overcome regardless of his efforts.
Papa I struggles a lot with his identity because of the labels thrust upon him and his sense of duty to his family and the Church
Papa I is the one who takes himself way too seriously, and this is canon. He's also super competitive.
Papa, I is one of those people that relate heavily to birds, and it's valid! He has a little, not perfect, pop-up aviary on the balcony of his papal apartment where he takes the time to rehabilitate abandoned or mistreated birds, before letting them be adopted out again.
I don't think Papa I had any kids, why? Because having a bloodline of his own would be considered a 'threat' against (Nihil) his brother's own. So, he was never allowed to. He does resent this quite a bit; not that he ever really wanted a family; it's just that he never had a choice either way.
In general, Papa I grinned and bared a lot of unfair treatment for the sake of keeping the peace between him and Nihil.
I agree that Papa II was bitter and envious over the treatment III was given (III was a spoiled, golden child, he had a loving mom, was a favourite in the Church, even as a child, etc.). Still, I don't think it's over money and fame, or so to say, that stuff is inconsequential to him. On a fundamental level, II's secret resentment of III all comes down to being treated as lesser when compared to him. Secondo would never show this to his face, however, because he loves his brother, but that bitter envy is there and always will be.
Papa II is the type to write his s/o love letters but not the kind to send them. He keeps them in a box in his office,
Ghoul's can't be killed on the mortal plane, not really. Yes, their vessels (or bodies) may be destroyed, but the Ghoul or demon itself is stored in the mask. So long as the mask is intact, that Ghoul is alive and ready to be bound to another host vessel. When a ghoul is 'killed', they are either banished back into the mask or into hell, based on where the specific damage occured. (vessel vs. mask)
There are two ways of summoning a ghoul: the first is by summoning them in spirit and binding them to their respective mask, which is then bound via a death ritual to a vessel. The other is by summoning and manifesting the Ghoul in body and spirit via a series of tedious and taxing rituals.
CHURCH HEADCANONS
The Church practises Flanderization when it comes to their ghouls. You see, there are many classifications of ghouls with differing temperaments, appearances, etc. Such as Magma, Ash and Spark. However, for the sake of convenience- or perhaps further dehumanization - the ghouls are grouped and given broad labels like Fire, Earth, Water, Air and Aether.
There's a bunch of geese and other waterfowl that make their home in a decorative pond in the Church's unholy-see. Everyone jokes that they're the real evil in the Church. --The geese cause troubles on purpose. They will chase siblings down the walkways and stand at the door, waiting for their next victim to exit. Unless you're Papa I, in which case they become full babies, much to everyone's horror and reverence
The unholy-see has one central basilica, with adjoining monasteries segregated based on gender and species (the ghouls have their own pad for safety concerns) and other facilities related to being independent of the outside world, like farming and husbandry. Recreation and tourism (they thrive on folks wanting to come to see the quirky satan Vatican)
The monasteries are named after the three Prime-mover's who birthed the Emeritus, Infinitus and Ambrosios line of cambions, although, in the present day, only the Emeritus and Ambrosios have living members. (the Infinitus line were wiped out in the Catholicism-based attacks that drove them from Italy to Sweden in the first place)
While the main basilica bears the name of the archdemon father who sired them.
All buildings present in the unholy-see, from monastary to the farm land and the like, are all connected by the mass of labyrinthian catacombs which hold all of the Church's dead.
the public or first level of the catacombs are internationally recognized because of how well the bodies are preserved, and many see it as a macabre must-have for their bucket list
I think Sister's and sibling's, in general, have the opportunity to rename themselves after they take their vows Some make titles out of it and some choose names from the doctrine or church history, for instance, Meridiana (my oc) chose her name as a tongue in cheek reference to her job.
The thing with the church catacombs is that they're dry and cold, leading to sort of mummies being formed of the corpses interred there, but well-preserved mummies given much of the ancient church architecture is untouched and old traditions for burial are continued!
For instance, the Church doesn't do coffins, when a body is put into their catacombs, it is given it's cubby, or so to speak and is wrapped with several layers of textiles and plant-based fabric, such as cotton.
There numerous notable individuals in the catacombs. Such as the last members of the Infinitus line, the mother's and non-papal serving family of the Papa's and descendants of the demon lines. As well as entirely unrelated celebrity and royal individuals who were followers of the Church and wanted their remains interred in the unholy-see's catacombs
An iconic corpse from the catacombs is:
- Adalgisa Emeritus, Nihil's grand aunt who died as a young girl (~8) from complications related to an infection from a broken bone. Who, despite being laid to rest over 450 years ago, maintains many of her features from life. Including her nose, which has shrivelled up but is still there, her eyelids + lashes, brows and her hair. And provided an excellent window to understand how the deaths of papal-family members were treated at the time.
Although the treatment of her corpse and funerary items has led to much debate in the Church, given she was displayed not as a result of her immediate family's wishes, but from Nihil and One's, who believed her remarkable condition and life should be showcased to those who wanted to learn about the papal family history.
Adalgisa was a catalyst for significant changes in the way the catacombs and dead were laid to rest in the Church.
You see, previously, they were organized by status and ranking with the Church. With the demonic families having their own lavish wing, as did upper Clergy, etc. however, after her death, her father, Cernunnos IV, couldn't palette the idea of his daughter being put away in an empty wing, waiting for her family. He couldn't stand it, and so committed to having a children's wing created so his daughter and other children wouldn't be abandoned in the cold dank waiting for the families they were stolen from, and so they could reunite in the depths, play and be merry. Just like in life
It's actually said in church texts that the Fourth was haunted by nightmares of his daughter's cries echoing in the hallowed walls. But this is 'hear-say' according to the Fourth's second prime-mover.

Saving Christmas
I knew something was up. That wasn't a social visit from the Hood at all. He managed to disrupt everything in the workshop.
Sabotaged the conveyor belt. Argued with Dave, the Head Elf.
And managed to steal my sleigh, crashing it into the park, narrowly missing the fish pond.
He has really put things behind. With the conveyor belt out of action, the elves are stuck. The letters pile up ... Mrs Claus is sick with flu.
I need a hot cocoa with marshmallows on the top.
But then, a cheery voice appears ... one that gave me some hope.
"Hi," he said, his bright shirt almost clashing with my own festive decor, "my name is Gordon Tracy. I'm from International Rescue. You look as if you are in need of some help."
I look bewildered.
"Aren't there supposed to be five of you?"
He shrugs.
"They're all out on rescues themselves," he explains, "but I'm here now. What do you need?"
He whips out his notepad and pencil. I'm impressed, as I haven't seen those for years since everything went digital.
"Okay," I respond stroking my beard, "I need to sort out the conveyor belt so production can restart."
"No problem sir," he whips out a multi tool and a couple of tweaks later, the belt starts moving.
He pauses, seeing the large pile of letters and frowns.
"Um ... I'm better off fixing your sleigh," he backs away, "I might mix them up and send good kids coal."
I had to agree with him there. After all, it's a specialist job and is only suitable for those 'in the know'.
"You can take Rudolph back to the park," I suggest.
He doesn't look convinced.
"Let's say ... he knows the route ... and is faster than Thunderbird One."
I didn't need to tell Gordon Tracy twice. He was already carefully climbing onto the red nosed reindeer.
"Oh, and make sure you are facing forward!"
I get a thumbs up as well as a little wobble as this young man wraps his arms around the neck of my very patient reindeer.
Who gave a rather smelly fart, causing Gordon to let go and waft his hand around.
"That'll be the sprouts," I tell him with a kindly smile, "old Rudy can't get enough of them."
My pocket watch tings, I check it then turn to my newest 'elf'.
"Time's moving forward now. Hold on tight!"
I give the reindeer a slap on his rump and the graceful beast shoots up in the air and vanishes out into the twilight above.
Whilst I corral the rest of the elves to help with the mail, I hear Gordon's voice over my Santa comm. Only had that installed recently, after much nagging from my missus.
He has found my sleigh, told me it's in pieces and managed to get a few people from the town to help gather all the bits together.
Since Virgil still wasn't available - that rescue was taking a lot longer. Heavy storms always do hold things up. Trust me, I should know. I've travelled centuries all over the world and faced many hurricanes, cyclones, volcanic explosions etc.
Gordon said he would put it all back together.
And even assured me that he has the blueprints ... courtesy of his brother John.
The eye in the sky.
So repairing an ancient sleigh would be fairly easy.
A couple of nervous hours later. And many many questions about springs and sprockets. My sleigh was ready to go.
It just needed a little frosty magic to give it a kickstart.
However, nature wasn't playing nicely today and the snow had decided not to make an appearance.
There's plenty here at my workshop. I just needed to get my sleigh back here.
Cue the big green 'Bird and her pilot. Who happily ... and carefully ... put my sleigh into one of his pods and brought her back home.
I insisted that they stay for the celebratory feast, I could see the hunger in their eyes. But they had to refuse. Too much to do.
Besides, they'd have to put up with their grandmother's cooking.
Know how they feel. I tasted her cookies ... and almost needed expensive dental treatment.
So ... I left a note to my beloved wife, to make up a special meal package and send it to Tracy Island as a thank you for helping to save Christmas.

all this before coffee
Dedicated to my black sheep family, who will always be golden.
Barbed wire, blank walls and an empty sky. Cocoa Beach. Brevard County, FL. Jail. Also known as SHARPS. Tammy walked into the classroom with an air of bravado coupled with the eyes of a child. I never met a teacher before she said shyly, glancing at her handcuffs on the uncomfortable chair. Even … I hesitated, even in school, I asked gently. I adjusted my own hips to adjust for the cold hard beneath me. I mean, a teacher for real. Her eyes looked down, and I implored with my eyes this time to the corrections officer to remove the handcuffs. Her shoulder length hair was marred by black roots and mustard colored ends. There were scars on her arm from cutting. Her teeth were perfect when she decided to smile. Opening the GRE materials, I joked that I am useless at math but fairly good at grammar. Tammy looked beautiful.
Some of us take many things too far. That has seemed to be my pattern. Even healthy habits turned into obsessions. Jogging turned into running which became marathons and a cruel treatment of my body. Some can run into their seventies without injury as some people live to a hundred while smoking and drinking whiskey to the end. Mindful eating became anorexia and bulimia. Going organic made me broke with the kombucha and hemp that flowed through my veins. Being tidy led me to compulsive house cleaning, often with bleach scouring my hands and my eyes colored in pink tears. Personal grooming turned to hours and dollars of hair coloring, clothes I could not afford, Botox, and breast augmentation. Wanting affirmation led to dangerous and toxic sexual situations.
Jaylen, I was warned, was “special.” I would normally groan inward, used to so many parents highlighting their children as such, usually to explain poor grades. The volunteer walked all twelve years of Jaylen, his mannerisms large and chaotic, into the room in which all toys and colors were removed. I hate reading, he said, standing with his arms crossed in front of him like a knight. Why? It’s stupid. Can you read, I asked, opening the second-grade reader I was given. I don’t need to read, I can dance.
I met The Peruvian on a last minute, pathetic online date. I was at a job expo to acquire my first teaching job after finishing my master’s degree at a world-famous university. I almost flunked out. I could not focus. I cried over social histories in German, a language I lacked grammatical skill in, dreading the meetings with just my professor and another grad student. Black tea, discussions of Marx I got lost in, his approval nodding at the stout Russian girl I already had difficulty understanding in English, never mind in German. In college, I was stellar. On time to each class, writing papers late into the night with a gusto of my fingers and a smile on my face. The world looked bright. On a sweltering day with an incompressible and unimportant commencement speaker, we burnt in the sun and passed around a flask of vodka under our graduation gowns. Life is beginning. I held the parchment color graduation schedule. My name had a star next to it.
I saw that Tammy was no longer shackled when she entered the gray room. Since the week I met with her, she had elevated herself to the trusted inmates who could clean, deliver meals, and hand out the dog-eared pages of books on a squeaky cart. So, you scored extremely high on many levels, Tammy. Let’s take a look at the reading comprehension packet I assigned on The Scarlet Letter. She smiled more brightly. I pressed her for intrigue. Ma’am, she said glowing, my commissary is so lit now I don’t have to eat the garbage they give us. They try to pass off expired food when I deliver it. I wanted to call them out on those pistachios. I don’t have time to answer these packets you give me. But I read the book. What did you read, according to you? We clasped hands. Of course, the minster got off and Hester had to wear the giant A over her pilgrim costume. I dipped my head. Of course. She could read Hawthorne.
I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.
I will look at cliffs and clouds
With quiet eyes,
Watch the wind bow down the grass,
And the grass rise.
And when the lights begin to show
Up from the town,
I will mark which much be mine,
And then start down.
- Edna St. Vincent Millay
Jaylen came running into the room from the play center and basketball court which I assumed was a courtesy to me. He needed to get the wiggles out.
Nassau Point in the summer at Aunt Tillie’s, driving the Long Island Expressway until it ended to countless grey and white mottled roads. Passing vineyards that used to be potato fields, cramming my mouth with the last bit of contraband Doritos which were called a Special Treat to nullify us on the vast expanse from New Jersey to the tiny white house. Decorated in “Early American” with a front glass porch smelling oddly pleasant of moth balls and sunlight. The huge lawn rolling into the bay with a dock that appeared and disappeared with the tide. Kids took showers in the dank basement, carved out of a space teeming of a hoarder. A crusted bottle of prell shampoo and a withered sliver of ivory soap. I met Man-Boy With Very Hairy Legs for the first and last time. Stroking my legs up and down, he asked if I had a boyfriend. I was ten, and smug that I could run through poison ivy and never get a rash. Do you want to fool around, like do stuff? He whispered into my ear everything I did not know yet. That’s what married people do! With his laughter, I leapt my long legs and ran, up the hill, to the driveway where my father was shucking corn. I got away. This time.
I was so excited to see Tammy. But she was not in attendance. I left the CO the beat-up copy of Antigone for her. I never saw Tammy again. “All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when his course is wrong and repairs the evil. The only evil is pride.” This quote was for my betterment, not for Tammy’s.
A time of reckoning, and a time of complete growth. A time of a schedule not placed by us. A journey into us through the connection of others, who became best friends. Vitamin fusions, lining up for medication in ribbed short paper cups, and Group. Totally released from responsibility, my linens and clothes were washed, returned the same afternoon in compact squares surrounded by plastic wrap. Jokes of communal constipation. So, this is my brain mapped. Here is what displays depression, here anxiety, this is insomnia, that part shows a lack of memory and concentration. What is that big blue of the Pacific Ocean? She looked at me, clicked her keyboard. PTSD.
I want to draw a Parrot! P-A-R-R-O-T and speak like one! Wordless, I handed him the blue and black expo markers for the old white board. With precision, he drew the bird. I need more colors, he explained in one breath can I talk like a parrot. I smiled at him at led him to his desk. Let’s try to pay attention today, and I will get you more colors and you can show me how a parrot talks. I began my lesson, and his eyes drifted into imagination. I needed to get him more colors.
I told The Peruvian I was pregnant. Now I can never afford to divorce you he muttered, enraged. Married two months earlier, I realized our honeymoon baby was not welcome. The protesters were angry, and I felt sick. Him on his laptop, me crying to a social worker. Do not sedate me, I plead, I need to feel this sin. Sliding my shoes off in the car, my trunk grinding with mountain rolls of cramps and uncontrollable sobbing coming from a divine place, I declined lunch in West Palm. I never want to do anything fun. Changing my pad alone in a car beneath the ceiling of the parking garage in City Place, I then tilted my head and fell asleep again. My birthday came and went. You didn’t remember my birthday. With that evil glint in his eyes, he turned his head and told me that was because he did not love me.
I purchased a ream of paper and a new box of 42 colors Crayola, legit, sharpener in the box, for Jaylen. He immediately sat down and drew and drew. Can we put some words to these if we use the colors you want? He looked up at me shyly and wrote down five words from the fifth-grade reader. How did you know that? Easy, my Grammy teaches me.
I did not smoke to fit in. I smoked because it felt good out in the parking lot, vying for shade, with the Tech supplying communal cigarettes and a light. The wave went through me and my lips burned with the dirt and smoky taste. You look like Strawberry Shortcake trying to smoke a cigarette! My mother was a sophisticated Virginia Slims smoker, sitting on the brick steps in her tennis skirt, so beautiful, watching my brother play in the backyard waiting for my father to return from work. I sat next to her in awe, breathing in the sprinkler water and counting its pattern, hum hum-hum-hum, hum hum-hum-hum.
I took a cigarette break on my Uber ride home. I knew I would not smoke much when I got home. However, I did not consume much except cigarettes and black coffee. I felt Parisian. The house got messy, and my thighs grew softer. Investing only in ponds cold cream and drugstore mascara, I laughed deeper and threw myself into work more than ever, with determined concentration, forgetting my posture, hunched over in zeal working sixty hours a week. Anxiety attacks did not make my head and hands shake while driving. I binged watched Law and Order. Being unhealthy never felt so healthy.
I called the jail to let them know I am available for other inmates if they needed me. I went the next day to help a young man learn English as a second language. All went well until he stood up screaming asking for a guard then switching to Spanish.
Here is your key, you can find your mailbox in the teacher lounge. Here is the form to join the union, Mr. Pescatelli will most certainly find you about that. Do you know what a block schedule is? In the morning you will be teaching Advanced Placement European History to our magnet students. After lunch, you have sophomore World History in the fourth wing. The afternoon will have different challenges. If you ever need assistance, security is just down the hall. Welcome to Ft. Lauderdale High School. Welcome to my first year of teaching.
…
I met the Sophisticated Scandinavian Man in Boston in the Spring. A PhD candidate from a social democracy intrigued me. I was twenty-two and he was twenty-eight. I felt like a puppy taken in from the cold. There is a long story for this, maybe later. The times in which he devoured me, lavished upon me, he loved a short story I wrote, “All this before coffee.”
Sonya met me in the prison classroom. In anticipation of a new student, I posted Jaylen’s parrots, travel posters, pictures of presidents listing their failures before they took office. Hello, she said, reaching her cuffed wrists out to me. I am Jaylen’s mother.
All this before coffee. All this after a DUI.
