Thursday Feb 27th 6:30-8:30pm @wordupbooks JACQUES VIAU RENAUD "one central reason why Viau and his poetry matter is that he offers a viable alternative narrative to these entrenched ideas about "fatal conflict, "... His poetry, his activism, and the literary circles he moved in—all of these point to the possibility for imagining a different Haitian-Dominican relationship." Roll up your sleeves. Just because you identify as black does not mean you do not have work to do to undo your internalized oppression. We all have biases that have been created because of this racialized society. We have work to do to decolonize, we have work to do to heal from the trauma of racism, we have to undo what has been done and liberate ourselves and all of those around us. Liberation Monologue by Jesika Gonzalez talking about some Dominicans (Dominican Nationalist) who are in denial about history. Basically they are escaping to whiteness because they don’t know who they are. This is especially important for those who insist in the rhetoric created by Trujillo suppressing our African ancestry and changing the narratives round our Arawak Taino history. The Taino committed suicide rather than being enslaved by Spaniards. You have to question the desperation of someone choosing death instead of being brutalized through various violent acts and high levels of subjugation. So no, do not call yourself “Indio” if you don’t understand the fighting spirit of our Taino ancestors. And there are those who would use Enriquillo to say that Native ppl accepted Spanish rule and embrace Spanish domination. Which we would deny is the case. You can not romanticize Native ppl’s continuous uprising in order to justify Spanish brutalization and enslavement of Native and subsequently African ppl.
