December 2022 Reading Wrap Up
I read 8 books in December and 1 DNF. This was also a really good reading month, and I feel like 2022 in general was one of the best reading years for me since 2019 maybe. I'm looking forward to 2023, because I think I have even better books on my tbr!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1.Return of the Thief (Queen's Thief 6) by Meghan Whalen Turner, 5/5 stars. This is the last book of the qt series, and I was very satisfied with this conclusion and this book was everything I wanted it to be. I'm very glad I read this series, and it has been a defining series of 2022 for me. YA fantasy.
2.Moon Witch, Spider King (Dark Star Trilogy 2) by Marlon James 3/5 stars. This is the second book to MJ's African high fantasy series. This was enjoyable, but these books are tough to rate. I enjoyed the more female centered perspective on this one. Adult, African inspired fantasy.
3.Forging Silver into Stars by Brigid Kemmerer 5/5 stars. This is the first book in a spin-off series by Kemmerer from her ACSDAL series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and the romance (mlm) was super adorable and had more good disability rep. young adult high fantasy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Magicians by Lev Grossman (DNF). I had a physical copy of this, and decided to see what it was about. I dnf'd at about 20%
4.One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig 3/5 stars. I was a tad bit disappointed in this one. I was hoping for more of Margaret Rogerson's Vespertine but got more of Hannah Whitten's For the Wolf instead. This would have been a better spooky season read. I doubt I will read the sequel. adult high fantasy
5.The Pillars of the Earth (Kingsbridge 1) by Ken Follett 4.5/5 stars. This is a sweeping historical fiction surrounding the fictional English town of Kingsbridge trying to build a cathedral in the 12th century. I deeply enjoyed this one. Warning for a strong male-gaze/perspective and graphic r*pe scenes. Historical Fiction
6.Moira's Pen (Queen's Thief Collection) by Meghan Whalen Turner 3/5 stars. This is a collection of short stories, drabbles, illustrations, and even a recipe. It was enjoyable to read some behind the scenes stuff, and to get glimpses into the future after the 6th book, but I found several things frustrating and disappointing. It raised more questions than it answered. ya fantasy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7.Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children 3) by Seanan McGuire, 4/5 stars. Wayward Children is a series I desperately need to catch up on, and I just discovered my one library card has them all on audio. I really enjoyed the audiobook narrator. I thought this one was a fun quest/adventure story with our main cast of characters. Fantasy
8.What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher 3.5/5 stars. The Fall of the House of Usher is my favorite Poe short story, and I was excited for this one. I enjoyed this queer novella, with an even creepier twist to the classic story. Horror.
January reading goals:
Keep listening to the Wayward Children series on audio
Reread (on audio) the Folk of the Air in anticipation for The Lost Heir
Reread Ninth House and read Hell Bent
Emily Wildes Encyclopedia of Faeries
Sofi and the Bone Song
The Shadow of the Wind
Next Kingsbridge novel?

Books of 2022 - November and December
Tumblr media
Oops posted this the wrong way around as my year at a glance. Ahh well! I read more digitally than I did physically due to travelling a lot to and from school, but here's what I read.
November:
First Love by Ivan Turgenev - most first Turgenev, I enjoyed it. It was a bit predictable but I liked the realism and surprising relatability of this one. I'm intrigued to read more by him.
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman - I was a little bit disappointed by this one, I think the hype around this one set it up for a fall. It's an interesting look into a woman's severe mental illness and the way everyone around her, especially her husband, belittles and exacerbates her condition. I read it as a sincere attempt to help that went wrong due to a lack of knowledge about postnatal depression (and possibly another condition, I'm not going to try diagnosis!), but the early feminist message was a interesting. I just didn't connect with this one as much as others have.
Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay - I loved this book! I took it slowly because I was enthralled by the setting and characters, so much so that I didn't want to leave! I can't say too much as it's the second book in a duology but it was fabulous. One of Kay's best works that I've read (I like Tigana a bit more) and it enhanced Sailing to Sarantium which I struggled with a bit last year.
December:
Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare - I was feeling down at the start of December, so I reread one of my favourite Shakespearean comedies. I had a great time and I still say Beatrice and Benedick are Shakespeare's best couple (and Beatrice is my favourite heroine!)
Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott - I had so much fun with this one, and I was pleasantly surprised. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about Ivanhoe, and I completely understand why, but I personally loved it. I'm a sucker for 19th century medievalism - I like their version of chivalrous knights and merry England, I have an inner romantic deep down. However, I won't say I recommend it for everyone - there's an attempt at sympathetic Jewish characters but it's clumsy and in places as negatively stereotyped as you would expect from the 19th c., and it's very verbose. I loved it but I can see a lot of people struggling with it.
My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell - I still don't know why I read this... I don't want to go into what it's about due to the content being so dark (check trigger warnings!) but I found it only half successful. A lot of my problems came from the language - it's SO American. There is a reason I rarely read American contemporary works - I struggle with immersion but to a linguistic gap, and yes there IS a difference. There's certain phrases that feel wrong to me, references that pull me out of the book, and life experiences I don't share. It makes it difficult for me to relate to the story and that's what happened here. I ended up criticising the writing more than the content. I do think Russell handled the subject matter relatively well, it's one of the more sensitive examinations that I've seen. However, that last chapter was a mistake. Firstly, it wasn't long enough to show Vanessa on the first steps to "recovery", everything happened too fast and it was unbelievable. Secondly, the authorial moralising voice came on too strong. Vanessa stopped being Vanessa, instead she was a mouthpiece for Russell to tell us about the Me Too movement, and I hated it! We're intelligent enough to get the point of the book for ourselves, stop! Otherwise, it was alright. Again, I can't recommend this one and do check trigger warnings if you're interested.
I am still reading The Red and the Black by Stendhal and Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson, which is well over an additional 1000 pages between them but neither is finished. Guess they'll be the first books of 2023 then!

DECEMBER 2022 BOOK WRAP-UP
I finished 2 novels, 1 novella, 1 picture book, 2 non-fiction books and 1 volume of a manga. ✨️
This was likely my best reading month in 2022 which I'm very happy about. 👌🏻
The books will be in the order that I finished them. My favorite book¹ of the month will be marked with a 🌟.
Tumblr media
Understanding Chinese Fantasy Genres by Jeremy Bai
Tumblr media
◇ Non-Fiction
◇ Finished on December 1
◇ First Read
◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌘🌑
◆ What I Disliked: It wasn't nearly as comprehensive as I was hoping it would be, which I guess I should have seen coming given the number of pages, but it was still disappointing. The author did warn in the introduction of this book that it is there to give a brief overview over certain topics, but of course I didn't know that until I had it in my hands already. As a fanfic writer for C-drama characters with very limited research resources in English about the wuxia, xianxia and xuanhuan genres, I was very hopeful this might give me a much better understanding of how the genres, tropes, and cultivation techniques (specifically for xianxia) work, but unfortunately I didn't get as much out of it as I would have liked.
◆ What I Liked: Despite my initial disappointment, the author did touch on some things I didn't know yet, so it still held educative value for me and was worth the purchase. Especially explanations in regards to qi deviation and the like were quite helpful for my understanding of it. The author has a YT channel where he still makes videos about China and Chinese culture, so perhaps he'll release a sequel with more information in the future.
◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇
The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare, in collaboration with Maureen Johnson and Sarah Rees Brennan (feat. illustrations by Cassandra Jean)
Tumblr media
◇ Considered chronologically Book 0 in the Shadowhunter Chronicles
◇ Finished on December 5
◇ Re-Read
◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
◆ What I Disliked: The writing style felt a little bit clumsy at times in the beginning and it took me one or two stories to get used to it.
◆ What I Liked: Magnus is one of my favorite characters in the Shadowhunter world and I loved reading about all of his adventures before and during the existence of the characters we already know from the different series. Cassandra Jean's art was, as always, a beautiful bonus. Magnus has lived for a long time, so seeing the world and our mortality truly through his perspective offered a much better understanding about some of the choices he made throughout the differents book series set in the shadow world. This was the start of my re-read of the Shadowhunter Chronicles and I'm excited to revisit all the books in it I've already read before and the ones I have yet to read for the first time.
◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇
The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton
Tumblr media
◇ Finished on December 7
◇ Re-Read
◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
◆ What I Disliked: That it's so short, perhaps.
◆ What I Liked: From the whimsical rhymes to Tim Burton's enchanting art style, this was once again a delightful short read and a great bridge between Halloween and Christmas.
◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇
🌟 The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking) by Katie Mack
Tumblr media
◇ Non-Fiction
◇ Finished on December 23
◇ First Read
◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
◆ What I Disliked: This is not really the author's fault at all and instead due to my very science-incompatible brain, but it was very hard for me to grasp the science a lot of the time. What probably also didn't help that was the fact that I decided to listen to the audiobook of this instead of reading it with my own two eyes; if I had, that might have made it a little easier for me to understand some of the things the author talked about in scientific terms.
◆ What I Liked: Despite my struggle to comprehend some of the things discussed in the book, the different ways the universe might end one day is a very fascinating topic and I had a lot of fun listening to the audiobook. The way she described things was very engaging with a touch of humor here and there (I guess I'll never know whether that one fire and that one explosion during her college days really weren't her fault 🤣) which made the experience quite enjoyable.
I learned a lot and found that Vacuum Decay (Possibility #4) was likely the most interesting way to me for the universe to end. The fifth possibility (I forgot what she called it) I've heard about before in a documentary and it was fun to hear about something I recognized and had a little bit of information about beforehand.
One of the coolest things I learned about was that it's possible with one of those million-dollar telescopes to look so far away (thus so far into the past since the light we see is billions of years old) into space that we can actually see evidence of the Big Bang, that kinda blew my mind and now I wish I could go somewhere with one of those telescopes where someone can show me that.
For those with a fondness for all things space and who enjoy hearing about the ways everything might end one day, I highly recommend it; I really enjoyed it.
◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Tumblr media
◇ Finished on December 26
◇ Re-Read
◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
◆ What I Disliked: Some of Dickens's expressions and wordings of the time that wouldn't fly today, obviously, but aside from that, nothing much.
◆ What I Liked: What I love most about this story is the notion that it's never too late to change yourself to the better, to right at least some of the wrongs you've committed in your life, to leave the dark path you've been walking on for so long and find one that lights you a better way.
What's also interesting is that even though Scrooge was very adamant and firm in his lack of sympathy in the beginning, he cracked and showed compassion almost immediately once the ghosts took him on his journey, which tells me that the uncaring grump is not just a mask for the people around Scrooge, but also for Scrooge himself, so much so that he seems to have forgotten that it's only a mask and has become convinced it's his true nature. In the end he was so scared of dying alone with no one to mourn him, especially after seeing all the love and grief expressed after Tiny Tim's passing in the potential future, that it made him realize how much he really longs to be loved. It's a great, nearly timeless story that still holds value today.
◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇
Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare
Tumblr media
◇ Book 1 in The Infernal Devices trilogy
◇ Finished on December 29
◇ Re-Read
◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
◆ What I Disliked: The pacing and atmosphere felt a little bit off sometimes, but other than that, not much.
◆ What I Liked: The Infernal Devices is my favorite series in the Shadowhunter Chronicles, so I was really excited to start reading it again. Jem, my favorite character, was even more lovable than I remembered, as was Charlotte. I love the setting and the characters and the tension between them, as well as the mystery and the plot twist, they were very fun to rediscover. I look forward to continuing my re-read of the trilogy in January.
◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇
Nana (Vol. 1) by Ai Yazawa
Tumblr media
◇ Finished on December 31
◇ Re-Read
◇ Rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
◆ What I Disliked: Asano, obviously, and Shouji, even though that's not very relevant in this volume, yet. xD
◆ What I Liked: The complexity of the characters (*sigh* yes, yes, even Shouji in a way, though I am still not his biggest fan), the art style, pretty much almost everything. NANA has been one of my favorite manga series since I was a teenager. I also loved the live-action movies (especially the first one). I've been in the mood to re-read them, so it's fun to rediscover the story, even though I know it was never finished (which still makes me sad 🥲).
Tumblr media
And that's it! It was a pretty good reading month, I enjoyed pretty much everything I read to varying degrees, so I'd say it went well. 😋
I haven't decided yet whether I want to make a post about my favorite books of the year, but maybe, we'll see.
Anyway, Happy New Year, everybody! 🎆✨️💖

Total Books Read: 59
Favorite Book(s): Lady Wallflower; Haikyu!!; Shortcake Cake; Demon Slayer; Blue Flag; Dengeki Daisy; Cells at Work; Star Crossed; Noragami; Anonymous Noise; Kimi Ni Todoke; Cosplay Animal; Can I Kiss You Every Day?
Book That Surprised Me: Lady Wallflower- I put this down so many times ‘cause I thought it was gonna get overly dramatic, but it stayed pretty drama free! Star Crossed- I mean, I already liked Kiss Him, Not Me, but I wasn’t sure if I would like this one or not but it really had me cracking me up.
Book That Didn’t Meet Expectations: Wild Ones still isn’t really pulling me in, but it’s only 10 volumes...so
Thoughts For This Month: I feel like I nose-dived, but I was only a few less than last month...

Finally last month of 2022
How was your last month of the year? What are your plans for January? #Monthlywrapup #Decemnerinreading #Monthinreading #BookTwitter #Bookteacupandreviews
Hello readers! I hope you are well and had an amazing December. For me, I’m just glad finally last month of 2022 is over. Surprisingly I could read more than I did in the last couple of months but in terms of life, it wasn’t as good as I would have liked. It made me rethink how I go forward in 2023 and made me think about some changes in myself, to be specific the way I react to certain things.…

December 2022 Monthly Reading Wrap-Up
Well, we did it everybody, made it through another year. It wasn’t always easy, and school remains as much of a slog as ever, but here we are. I did come out of it with a Master’s degree, but I’ve definitely also been feeling tired lately. I love spending time with my family and friends during the holidays, and I’ve definitely been neglecting my work but it’s amazing how even the good stuff can wear you out.
But! My reading this month went pretty well! 12 books, about 4,300 pages--a strong finish for 2022. Here they are:
Leisure Reading:
The Book of Gothel by Mary McMyne- 2/5 stars
The Merciful Crow (The Merciful Crow #1) by Margaret Owen- 3.5/5 stars
Sisters of the Snake (Ria & Rani #1) by Sasha and Sarena Nanua- 2/5 stars
The Library of the Unwritten (Hell’s Library #1) by A.J. Hackwith- 3.75/5 stars
The Silence of the Girls (Women of Troy #1)* by Pat Barker- 3.5/5 stars
The Women of Troy (Women of Troy #2) by Pat Barker- 3.5/5 stars
A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes- 3/5 stars
The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes- 3.75/5 stars
The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games #2) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes- 3/5 stars *reread
Academic Reading:
The Arena of Satire: Juvenal’s Search for Rome by David Larmour
Images of Myths in Classical Antiquity by Susan Woodford
Persius: A Study in Food, Philosophy, and the Figural by Shadi Bartsch
No 5 star reads this month, unfortunately, but I’d say my favorite was The Library of the Unwritten. I haven’t thought too much about my goal for next year yet, but I hope everyone’s 2023 is full of whatever brings you joy--be it reading or anything else!
Currently Reading: Classic Ghost Stories and Akata Warrior (The Nsibidi Scripts #2) by Nnedi Okorafor

★ JUST MY TYPE | LN4
Scenario: in which lando norris’ history with his new teammate leads people to believe they don’t like one another, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. (requested)
Pairing: lando norris x male!reader
A/N: we need more rep for male readers 🙌🏻 had so much fun making this one and as per usual, shout-out to @renarots for fueling this

Anyone who’s an up-to-date F1 fan knows all about this rivalry, but just in case you don’t, here’s a quick rundown.
It all started in their karting days. Every race they would go wheel to wheel, and often finish right behind the other. They pushed each other, both metaphorically and physically. In one race, a desperate attempt to overtake YN saw Lando Norris taking himself out of the race.
A few years later, the two would be promoted to Formula One, in which Lando signed to Mclaren, and Yn signed to Alpine - a mistake, if you ask me…or any other fan of his. That being said, it wasn’t Yn’s first choice. Mclaren was openly considering Lando Norris AND Yn Ln, but ultimately chose to sign Norris, with Daniel Ricciardo occupying the second seat. This only fed into their rivalry.
During their rookie year, they fought at the back of the pack as they learned the reigns of F1, but as Norris improved throughout the seasons, Yn was left behind. There’s a lot to unpack in regards to that, but in the simplest of terms, his team has constantly prioritized Pierre Gasly, their second driver, despite him being the inferior talent between the two. We’ve seen this happen with other teams, and that never ends well.
All of that leads to this shocking revelation: Yn Ln is joining the Mclaren Formula One Team. While we can’t say for sure how this will play out, we can speculate. Will they move past their differences and become the ultimate team? Or, will they become the next brocedes?

racing.news lando norris has addressed the rumors regarding his relationship with his teammate. norris, 24, said “at the end of the day, i like who i like. i don’t want to put a label on it. it being my sexuality and my relationship with my teammate - those are private matters and have nothing to do with formula one.”
what are your thoughts?

norrisnation i just hate that they’re wrapped up in this. even if they are dating, i wish they could just be left alone.
rizzciardo we do not give a fuck about them dating. let people love people without questioning their shit 24/7
landomania FORGET WHAT LANDO SAID LOOK AT HOW HE’S LOOKING AT YN IN THE FIRST PICTURE
maxfewtrell my thoughts are that people should mind their business, politely

yn_ln super fun day. thank you guys 🧡
ynsworld anyone else noticing that yn seems less happy lately?
⤷ norrisyn YES BRO 😭 it hurts bc he was so happy at the beginning of the season after alpine fucked him over
⤷ ynlandolover honestly i think it’s bc of the rumors. imagine being there to race and all anyone can do is ask about your sexuality and relationship AND most of the questions are clearly judgemental
⤷ papayabull yeah, i feel for yn :( i hope the rumors and shit chill down bc he doesn’t deserve it
rizzciardo they’re so in love it makes me sick
⤷ norrisnation literally 😭 even if they’re just friends, they have so much love for each other and it’s obvious
verstappensboy was 100% certain they were gonna kiss
⤷ formulanorris ain’t even gonna lie, i feel like they considered it for a second. maybe i’m teaching but between their posts, rumors, landos statement, etc, i feel like they are dating
⤷ formulayn honestly same, but i’d avoid speculation online just in case they see it. they both want to keep the details private and we should respect it yk?
