“Can you walk?”

“Ideally, yes but just….not right now. Right now I stay down here,” Seth grunted, expression blank as he stared dreamily up at the sky. He’d been on the floor for a good half hour, at least that was his estimation before Karla found him. There’d been water on the floor and before he knew it, he’d been three feet off on the ground and on his back in the blink of an eye.

The pain had long since faded but his will to get back up was still aching. Or, in Seth’s perspective, he hadn’t found a reason to stand back up.

     THE   BOY   HAD   JUST   TURNED   TWELVE   ,   an   important   age   for   any   magickal   child   ,   and   was   spending   his   birthday   on   the   top   of   a   hill   under   a   shady   tree   with   some   old   book   in   his   lap   . 

     He   was   distracted   from   his   book   though   by   the   spark   of   flame   dancing   above   his   fingertips   ,   hypnotized   by   the   wisps   of   fire   . 

     He   doesn’t   notice   someone   approaching   until   it’s   too   late   to   hide   what   he   was   doing   .   He   jumps   up   with   a   sharp   gasp   ,   book   clattering   into   the   grass   ,   and   hands   hidden   behind   his   back   ,   staring   at   her   like   a   deer   in   headlights   .

     “   I   ---   I   can   explain   !!   ”   the   boy   says   anxiously   .
