If you're assuming that a group of 50-100 people can just intuitively know how to keep the exact same tempo and expressions with every other player in the room for a full performance, which can often last HOURS, you're talking out of your ass.

As someone who used to play in an orchestra and has fucked it up before because I didn't listen to the conductor, I can assure you that the role of a conductor is necessary. It just takes one person who didn't count enough rests or started at a different tempo to fuck up a whole piece.

And additionally, you CAN feel the vibrations in an orchestra hall when you play. Most notably through your feet. Standing in front of 50+ different instruments is fucking loud, of course it's gonna make vibrations. And considering how the bass is most common to follow the standard downbeats and is also the frequency that travels best through vibrations, it's reasonable to assume that that those vibrations can be used to determine tempo.

Today I cried a little bit because I remembered that when Beethoven conducted his ninth symphony for the first time he got a standing ovation and one of the sopranos had to turn him around to see the audience.
